Determination of the time of occurrence of gamma flares at different points in space

The problem of determining the time of occurrence of gamma flares at different points in space is considered. This problem arises in the localization of sources of gamma flares by the triangulation method using several spacecraft. A study is made of different methods for determining the time at which the flare reaches the spacecraft and algorithms are given for estimating their accuracy. Results of processing the model information are also given.

Interpretation of laser/multi-sensor data for short range terrain modeling and hazard detection

A terrain modeling algorithm that would reconstruct the sensed ground images formed by the triangulation scheme, and classify as unsafe any terrain feature that would pose a hazard to a roving vehicle is described. This modeler greatly reduces quantization errors inherent in a laser/sensing system through the use of a thinning algorithm. Dual filters are employed to separate terrain steps from the general landscape, simplifying the analysis of terrain features. A crosspath analysis is utilized to detect and avoid obstacles that would adversely affect the roll of the vehicle. Computer simulations of the rover on various terrains examine the performance of the modeler.

Control electronics for a multi-laser/multi-detector scanning system

The Mars Rover Laser Scanning system uses a precision laser pointing mechanism, a photodetector array, and the concept of triangulation to perform three dimensional scene analysis. The system is used for real time terrain sensing and vision. The Multi-Laser/Multi-Detector laser scanning system is controlled by a digital device called the ML/MD controller. A next generation laser scanning system, based on the Level 2 controller, is microprocessor based. The new controller capabilities far exceed those of the ML/MD device. The first draft circuit details and general software structure are presented.

Coordinates of features on the Galilean satellites

The coordinate systems of each of the Galilean satellites are defined and coordinates of features seen in the Voyager pictures of these satellites are presented. The control nets of the satellites were computed by means of single block analytical triangulations. The normal equations were solved by the conjugate iterative method which is convenient and which converges rapidly as the initial estimates of the parameters are very good.

International solar polar mission

The key configurations and characteristics of the two International Solar Polar Mission (ISPM) spacecraft are described. The primary mission objectives of the ISPM are to investigate, as a function of solar latitude, the properties of the solar corona, the solar wind, the sun/wind interface, the heliospheric magnetic field, solar and nonsolar cosmic rays, and the interstellar/interplanetary neutral gas and dust. In addition, instrumentation is included to detect the gamma ray bursts; it is hoped to pinpoint the sources of these bursts by using triangulation from each spacecraft and the Earth.

The Pioneer Venus Orbiter Gamma Burst Detector

The Orbiter Gamma Burst Detector was designed to record the temporal and spectral characteristics of cosmic gamma-ray bursts. The primary mission of the experiment is the accurate determination of the directions to the sources of such bursts through a technique of triangulation as a member of a widely spaced array of similar instruments. The system consists of a pair of scintillation spectrometers sensitive in the range of energies between 100 and 2000 keV, together with logic and data storage to provide a capability for recording these events. Nineteen events which have been verified as cosmic gamma-ray bursts were recorded within the first year's operation.

Hectometer and kilometer solar observations

Three dimensional 'snapshots' of the large scale solar magnetic field topology as well as the solar wind electron density distribution from about 0.1 to 1 AU are obtained by tracking traveling solar radio bursts at the hectometer and kilometer wavelengths with instruments aboard the ISEE-3 satellite and the HELIOS-2 solar probe. Both instruments observe in the frequency range from 30 kHz to a 1 MHz and both are equipped with dipole antennas located in the vehicle spin plane. ISEE-3 also has a dipole along the spin axis and the signals from the two ISEE-3 antennas are combined to give the aximuth and elevation angles of the radio source. Triangulation between HELIOS-2 and ISEE-3 provides the additional observation necessary to determine uniquely the position of the radio source in space at each observing frequency.

High-precision source location of the 1978 November 19 gamma-ray burst

The celestial source location of the November 19, 1978, intense gamma ray burst has been determined from data obtained with the interplanetary gamma-ray sensor network by means of long-baseline wave front timing instruments. Each of the instruments was designed for studying events with observable spectra of approximately greater than 100 keV, and each provides accurate event profile timing in the several millisecond range. The data analysis includes the following: the triangulated region is centered at (gamma, delta) 1950 = (1h16m32s, -28 deg 53 arcmin), at -84 deg galactic latitude, where the star density is very low and the obscuration negligible. The gamma-ray burst source region, consistent with that of a highly polarized radio source described by Hjellming and Ewald (1981), may assist in the source modeling and may facilitate the understanding of the source process. A marginally identifiable X-ray source was also found by an Einstein Observatory investigation. It is concluded that the burst contains redshifted positron annihilation and nuclear first-excited iron lines, which is consistent with a neutron star origin.

Video Target Tracking and Ranging System

Proposed target tracking and ranging system uses two automatic video target trackers to keep two TV cameras trained on object being tracked. Microcomputer calculates range and range-rate information by triangulation. Input data for calculation are position coordinates of two cameras and pan and tilt aiming angles of two cameras. System is useful for target ranging at distances up to about 1,000 feet (300 m) in such applications as vehicle collision avoidance, traffic monitoring and surveillance. Also substitutes for short-range radar in situations where radar signal can not be tolerated.

Design, development and mechanization of a precision deployable truss with optimized structural efficiency for spaceborne applications

A deployable mast concept which meets the weight, size and stability requirements for a feed support structure for offset antennas up to 100 meters in diameter is discussed. A triangulated truss configuration, the use of tapered tubes which exhibit a high strength-to-weight ratio, and low CTE graphite-epoxy material are seen to provide an efficient, lightweight and stable truss suitable for an antenna feed support. A low stowage ratio of 30:1 is achieved through a unique preloaded hinge located at the center of each longeron and an autonomous deployment cage with a drive mechanism. Initial analysis and proof of concept hardware validated the basic mechanism and design assumptions and provided a basis for further investigation. The concept can readily accept variations in member size and thus lends itself to optimization for other potential uses where a stiff, lightweight deployable truss is needed.

The 1982 control network of Mars

Attention is given to a planet-wide control network of Mars that was computed in September 1982 using a large single-block analytical triangulation with 47,524 measurements of 6853 control points on 1054 Mariner 9 and 757 Viking pictures. In all, 19,139 normal equations were solved, with a resulting standard error of measurement of 18.06 microns. The control points identified by name and letter designation are given, as are the aerographic coordinates of the control points. In addition, the coordinates of the Viking I lander site are given: latitude, 22.480 deg; longitude, 47.962 deg (radius, 3389.32 km). This study expands and updates the previously published network (1978). It is noted that the computation differs in many respects from standard aerial mapping photogrammetric practice. In comparison with aerial mapping photography, the television formats are small and the focal lengths are long; stereo coverage is rare, the scale of the pictures varies greatly, and the residual camera distortions are large.

A comparison of two photogrammetric algorithms for the measurement of model deformation in the National Transonic Facility

A comparison was made of two photogrammetric measurement techniques which can be used for the determination of the spatial loctions of targets. One technique is known as the Direct Linear Transformation (DLT), and the other is referred to as the Bundle method. Each technique utilizes triangulation of image data from two or more cameras, but they differ in their method of determining camera parameters. While the study was performed with simulated data, the geometries, image data accuracies and other parameters were set to simulate conditions for a two-camera, photogrammetric system which will be used at the National Transonic Facility at the NASA's Langley Research Center. For the conditions studied the Bundle technique was found to have smaller errors. Both methods were sensitive to the spatial distribution of control-point targets, but this effected the accuracy of the Bundle algorithm less than that of the DLT algorithm.

Investigation of several aspects of LANDSAT 4/5 data quality

A technique under development uses a zoom transfer scope to register the photograph of the target with digitally enlarged photographic hardcopy of the TM data using a visual fit to the area surrounding the target. The first attempt using the Sacramento Scene (44/33) of February 1, 1983 indicated that relief displacement in the aerial photography would cause large errors. A second attempt is in progress using the aero-triangulated scene centers which have no relief displacement. Being calculated points, the scene centers have somewhat larger absolute errors in geolocation, approximately 3 meters instead of 1.5 meters. The average TM effective instantaneous field of view (EIFOV) calculated from modulation transfer functions (MTFs) is 52.7 m. This is smaller than the 55 and 65 m EIFOVs reported earlier using noisy MTFs but larger than the EIFOVs from the San Mateo Bridge analysis which ranged from 44.5 to 50.9 m and averaged 47.6 m for the same TM scene.

The Control Network of Mars: October 1984

Strips of Viking mapping pictures are being added to the planetwide control networks of Mars. These high resolution strips run from the Viking 1 lander site east to Airy-O, north along the 0 deg meridian to 60 deg latitude, southwest through the Viking 1 lander site to the equator, and along the equator encircling the planet. Everywhere along these strips, old points are incorporated in the measurements, thus assuring that the strips and planetwide net make a single large data set. The control points are much denser in the areas covered by the strips than in those regions not covered by strips and their coordinates of the control points is estimated to be less than 3 km and the error in longitude of a few points near Airy-O is less than 40 m. The horizontal coordinates of the control points on Mars have been updated with a single-block planetwide analytical triangulation. The standard error of measurement was 18.06 micron m. The longitude of the Viking 1 lander site was 47 deg.962 and the latitude 22 deg. 480. The latitude of Airy-O was -5 deg. 152.

The Control Networks of the Satellites of Jupiter and Saturn

Geodetic control networks are being computed photogrammetrically for the large satellites of Jupiter and many of the satellites of Saturn using pictures from the Voyager 1 and 2 encounters. Control points have been identified on the satellites and their coordinates computed by single-block analytical triangulations. Contents of data sets for Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, and Rhea are summarized.

The Helios radio astronomy experiment

Radio bursts traveling between the Sun and the Earth were tracked by radio astronomy experiments on Helios 1 and 2. A relatively short dipole antenna with a well-defined toroidal reception pattern was flown. The antenna spins in the ecliptic at 60.3 rpm and 2 frequencies are measured in each revolution. The signal analysis determines the strength of the signal, the direction of the source in the ecliptic, and the degree of modulation, and estimates source size. The experiments provide three-dimensional direction finding in space. They extend the radio frequency window beyond what is observable on Earth, and offer a long triangulation baseline.

DE-1 measurements of AKR wave directions

In addition to its wave rotation sense, the direction of auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) can also be measured with the plasma wave instrument on Dynamics Explorer 1, from the relative phase of the signals received by its orthogonal electric dipole antennas. By this method, which differs in principle from the previous spin-null method for measuring wave directions, it has been found possible to pinpoint the AKR source by triangulation, using measurements from different points along the DE-1 orbit. The resulting apparent source, in one instance, seemed to occupy a well-defined auroral-zone invariant magnetic latitude and showed the expected increase of altitude with decreasing frequency. An analysis of the method also confirmed the validity of the previous rotation sense measurements.

Bistatic LIDAR experiment proposed for the shuttle/tethered satellite system missions

A new experiment concept has been proposed for the shuttle/tethered satellite system missions, which can provide high resolution, global density mappings of certain ionospheric species. The technique utilizes bistatic LIDAR to take advantage of the unique dual platform configuration offered by these missions. A tuned, shuttle-based laser is used to excite a column of the atmosphere adjacent to the tethered satellite, while triangulating photometic detectors on the satellite are employed to measure the fluorescence from sections of the column. The fluorescent intensity at the detectors is increased about six decades over both ground-based and monostatic shuttle-based LIDAR sounding of the same region. In addition, the orbital motion of the Shuttle provides for quasi-global mapping unattainable with ground-based observations. Since this technique provides such vastly improved resolution on a synoptic scale, many important middle atmospheric studies, heretofore untenable, may soon be addressed.
