Picosecond spin-orbit torque–induced coherent magnetization switching in a ferromagnet

Electrically controllable nonvolatile magnetic memories show great potential for the replacement of conventional semiconductor-based memory technologies. Here, we experimentally demonstrate ultrafast spin-orbit torque (SOT)-induced coherent magnetization switching dynamics in a ferromagnet. We use an ultrafast photoconducting switch and a coplanar strip line to generate and guide a ~9-picosecond electrical pulse into a heavy metal/ferromagnet multilayer to induce ultrafast SOT. We then use magneto-optical probing to investigate the magnetization dynamics with sub-picosecond resolution. Ultrafast heating by the approximately 9 picosecond current pulse induces a thermal anisotropy torque which, in combination with the damping-like torque, coherently rotates the magnetization to obtain zero-crossing of magnetization in ~70 picoseconds. A macro-magnetic simulation coupled with an ultrafast heating model agrees well with the experiment and suggests coherent magnetization switching without any incubation delay on an unprecedented time scale. Our work proposes a unique magnetization switching mechanism toward markedly increasing the writing speed of SOT magnetic random-access memory devices.

Field-free deterministic switching of all–van der Waals spin-orbit torque system above room temperature

Two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials hold promise for the development of high-density, energy-efficient spintronic devices for memory and computation. Recent breakthroughs in material discoveries and spin-orbit torque control of vdW ferromagnets have opened a path for integration of vdW magnets in commercial spintronic devices. However, a solution for field-free electric control of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) vdW magnets at room temperatures, essential for building compact and thermally stable spintronic devices, is still missing. Here, we report a solution for the field-free, deterministic, and nonvolatile switching of a PMA vdW ferromagnet, Fe 3 GaTe 2 , above room temperature (up to 320 K). We use the unconventional out-of-plane anti-damping torque from an adjacent WTe 2 layer to enable such switching with a low current density of 2.23 × 10 6 A cm –2 . This study exemplifies the efficacy of low-symmetry vdW materials for spin-orbit torque control of vdW ferromagnets and provides an all-vdW solution for the next generation of scalable and energy-efficient spintronic devices.

T-handle wrench has torque-limiting action

T-handle wrench can be preset to release when a certain torque value is exceeded by means of a spring-loaded roller and groove torque-limiting mechanism contained in the handle of the wrench. The wrench is also equipped with a push button in the handle that permits the operator to lock the handle to the spindle shaft, thus eliminating the torque-limiting function.

Gravity gradient torque profiles over an orbit for arbitrary modular space station configurations in the Y-POP and inertial hold modes

For several proposed configurations of the modular space station, the gravity gradient torque distribution is examined for both Y-POP and inertial hold orbits. The necessary equations are derived to allow for solar panel gimbaling, and a procedure is established which will allow any desired space station configuration to be built up. Results indicated that solar panel gimbaling can be a significant factor in the torque distribution in Y-POP orbits. In addition, for the two configurations that were plotted, bias torque magnitudes varied widely in inertial hold modes.

High torque CMG rotary actuator

A high torque rotary actuator was designed, fabricated and tested. Exacting requirements were placed on performance and physical characteristics of the actuator, particularly in the area of stiffness, backlash, torque ripple, power and size and weight. A brushless dc motor was designed utilizing rare earth magnets to meet power and weight requirements. A 26-to-1 planetary roller gear transmission was selected to best meet overall requirements. The transmission utilizes parallel gear and roller paths to minimize backlash and breakaway torque.

Nutational stability of a dual-spin satellite under the influence of applied reaction torques.

The nutational stability of a dual-spin satellite under the influence of an applied reaction torque is analyzed. It is assumed that since the solar paddle attachments to the hub of the spacecraft are not rigidly locked, the effect of the solar panels can be replaced by a constant reaction torque acting on the hub of the spacecraft. This could result in the satellite having an equilibrium motion about an axis displaced from the nominal axis of symmetry. The variational equations of motion are developed about such an equilibrium position using the SAS-A spacecraft as a model. Energy dissipation on the rotor as well as the main body is included. This nonautonomous set of differential equations are linearized and transformed to an autonomous set using the Lyapunov Reducibility Theorem. The stability of the kinematically similar system is examined numerically using representative SAS-A parameters for the case when either pair of solar panels is assumed to be loosely attached. Stability is verified for small system nutation angles (0.1 degree) although the time constant associated with the least damped mode is approximately one order of magnitude larger than that for the SAS-A system without the influence of the reaction torques.

Ironless armature torque motor

Four iron-less armature torque motors, four Hall device position sensor assemblies, and two test fixtures were fabricated. The design approach utilized samarium cobalt permanent magnets, a large airgap, and a three-phase winding in a stationary ironless armature. Hall devices were employed to sense rotor position. An ironless armature torque motor having an outer diameter of 4.25 inches was developed to produce a torque constant of 65 ounce-inches per ampere with a resistance of 20.5 ohms. The total weight, including structural elements, was 1.58 pounds. Test results indicated that all specifications were met except for generated voltage waveform. It is recommended that investigations be made concerning the generated voltage waveform to determine if it may be improved.

Study of ball bearing torque under elastohydrodynamic lubrication

Spinning and rolling torques were measured in an angular-contact ball bearing with and without a cage under several lubrication regimes in a modified NASA spinning torque apparatus. Two lubricants were used, a di-2 ethylhexyl sebacate and a synthetic paraffinic oil, at shaft speeds of 1000, 2000, and 3000 rpm and bearing loads from 10 lbs to 90 lbs. An analytical model was developed from previous spinning friction models to include rolling with spinning under lubrication regimes from thin film to flooded conditions. The bearing torque values have a wide variation, under any condition of speed and load, depending on the amount of lubricant present in the bearing. The analytical model compared favorably with experimental results under several lubrication regimes.

Magnetic torque on a rotating superconducting sphere

The London theory of superconductivity is used to calculate the torque on a superconducting sphere rotating in a uniform applied magnetic field. The London theory is combined with classical electrodynamics for a calculation of the direct effect of excess charge on a rotating superconducting sphere. Classical electrodynamics, with the assumption of a perfect Meissner effect, is used to calculate the torque on a superconducting sphere rotating in an arbitrary magnetic induction; this macroscopic approach yields results which are correct to first order. Using the same approach, the torque due to a current loop encircling the rotating sphere is calculated.

A flight simulator control system using electric torque motors

Control systems are required in flight simulators to provide representative stick and rudder pedal characteristics. A system has been developed that uses electric dc torque motors instead of the more common hydraulic actuators. The torque motor system overcomes certain disadvantages of hydraulic systems, such as high cost, high power consumption, noise, oil leaks, and safety problems. A description of the torque motor system is presented, including both electrical and mechanical design as well as performance characteristics. The system develops forces sufficiently high for most simulations, and is physically small and light enough to be used in most motion-base cockpits.

Design of a Torque Current Generator for Strapdown Gyroscopes

The design, analysis, and experimental evaluation of an optimum performance torque current generator for use with strapdown gyroscopes, is presented. Among the criteria used to evaluate the design were the following: (1) steady-state accuracy; (2) margins of stability against self-oscillation; (3) temperature variations; (4) aging; (5) static errors drift errors, and transient errors, (6) classical frequency and time domain characteristics; and (7) the equivalent noise at the input of the comparater operational amplifier. The DC feedback loop of the torque current generator was approximated as a second-order system. Stability calculations for gain margins are discussed. Circuit diagrams are shown and block diagrams showing the implementation of the torque current generator are discussed.

The dynamics and optimal control of spinning spacecraft and movable telescoping appendages, part B: Effect of gravity-gradient torques on the dynamics of a spinning spacecraft with telescoping appendages

The effects of gravity gradient torques during boom deployment maneuvers of a spinning spacecraft are examined. Configurations where the booms extended only along the hub principal axes and where one or two booms are offset from the principal axes were considered. For the special case of symmetric deployment (principal axes booms) the stability boundaries are determined, and a stability chart is used to study the system behavior. Possible cases of instability during this type of maneuver are identified. In the second configuration an expression for gravity torque about the hub center of mass was developed. The nonlinear equations of motion are solved numerically, and the substantial influence of the gravity torque during asymmetric deployment maneuvers is indicated.

First-order torques and solid-body spinning velocities in intense sound fields

The letter reports an observation of first-order nonzero time-averaged torques and solid-body spinning velocities in intense acoustic fields. The experimental apparatus consisted of a vertical cylindrical rod supported on an air bearing and passing through a box with two loudspeakers centered on adjoining vertical sides. The rim velocity of the cylinder and the torque on the cylinder are measured as functions of air-particle velocity and the phase difference between the x and y components of the particle velocity. It is found that both rim velocity and torque are linear functions of particle velocity. Difficulties in constructing a proper theoretical description of the observed effects are discussed.

Torquing preload in a lubricated bolt

The tension preload obtained by torquing a 7/8 in. diam UNC high strength bolt was determined for lubricated and dry conditions. Consistent preload with a variation of + or - 3% was obtained when the bolt head area was lubricated prior to each torque application. Preload tensions nearly 70% greater than the value predicted with the commonly used formula occurred with the lubricated bolt. A reduction to 39% of the initial preload was observed during 50 torque applications without relubrication. Little evidence of wear was noted after 203 cycles of tightening.

Electronic measurement of variable torques in precision work technology

Approaches for the determination of torques on the basis of length measurements are discussed. Attention is given to torque determinations in which the deformation of a shaft is measured, an electric measurement of the torsion angle, and an approach proposed by Buschmann (1970). Methods for a torque determination conducted with the aid of force measurements make use of piezoelectric approaches. The components used by these methods include a quartz crystal and a charge amplifier.

Period variations in pulsating X-ray sources. II - Torque variations and stellar response

A statistical description of variations in the torque acting on a rotating neutron star is developed in terms of stationary random processes and is used to calculate the torque power spectrum, stellar response power spectrum, and the total mean square variation in the crustal angular velocity of the star. The response of a star with a finite frequency internal mode is calculated with the aid of phenomenological equations which correspond to a generalized two-component model of the star. The form of the stellar response functions is examined in a number of limiting cases of physical interest, and the dependence of the response power on both the period of observation and the time over which fluctuating torques have been acting is discussed.
