Influence of auditory fatigue on masked pure-tone thresholds

A description is presented of four related experiments involving conditions of 3-kHz low-intensity masking, a replication of experiment I with slight variations, 3-kHz high-intensity masking, and 6-kHz low-intensity masking. The frequencies of the tones which the observers detected were 3 and 6 kHz. The observed change in masked-tone threshold as a function of fatigue is discussed. It is found that masked-tone-detection thresholds remain essentially unchanged following fatigue if the masking-noise intensity is sufficiently great.

Theoretical grain-size thresholds and their application to accurate methods for paleointensity determination

Improved values of critical grain-size thresholds for magnetite and Fe have been obtained using a rigorous theoretical approach. The temperature dependence of these thresholds is interesting in that it indicates the existence of certain grains which, when cooled from above their blocking temperature, pass sequentially through the following magnetization states: superparamagnetic to single-domain to nonuniform magnetization. Such grains will yield correct paleointensities by the Wilson (1961) or Shaw (1974) method but not by the well-known method due to Thellier and Thellier (1959).

Energy threshold effects in the collisionless dissociation of polyatomic molecules by ir laser radiation

The threshold for collisionless dissociation of SF6, SiF4, and CF2Cl2 by focused CO2 laser radiation has been measured. This threshold is a laser pulse energy effect and, within experimental error, is found to be the same for all three gases. Provided collisions cannot occur during the laser pulse, the degree of dissociation produced depends only on the energy in the pulse, which is consistent with simple adiabatic vibrational heating of the molecules by the laser.

The uncertainty threshold principle - Some fundamental limitations of optimal decision making under dynamic uncertainty

This note shows that the optimal control of dynamic systems with uncertain parameters has certain limitations. In particular, by means of a simple scalar linear-quadratic optimal control example, it is shown that the infinite horizon solution does not exist if the parameter uncertainty exceeds a certain quantifiable threshold; we call this the uncertainty threshold principle. The philosophical and design implications of this result are discussed.

ISODATA: Thresholds for splitting clusters

The author has identified the following significant results. The parameter AD (average distance) as used in the ISODATA program was critically examined. Thresholds of AD to decide on the splitting of clusters were obtained. For the univariate case, 0.84 was established as a sound choice, after examining several simple, as well as composite, distributions and also after investigating the probability of misclassification when points have to be reassigned to the newly identified clusters. For the multivariate case, the empirical threshold (N-0.16)/square root of N was extrapolated. A final criticism on AD was that AD would lose its effectiveness as a discriminative measure for the present purpose when N was large.

Ku-band radar threshold analysis

The statistics of the CFAR threshold for the Ku-band radar was determined. Exact analytical results were developed for both the mean and standard deviations in the designated search mode. The mean value is compared to the results of a previously reported simulation. The analytical results are more optimistic than the simulation results, for which no explanation is offered. The normalized standard deviation is shown to be very sensitive to signal-to-noise ratio and very insensitive to the noise correlation present in the range gates of the designated search mode. The substantial variation in the CFAR threshold is dominant at large values of SNR where the normalized standard deviation is greater than 0.3. Whether or not this significantly affects the resulting probability of detection is a matter which deserves additional attention.

Low-threshold high-T/0/ constricted double heterojunction AlGaAs diode lasers

Constricted double heterojunction diode lasers of relatively low CW thresholds (28-40 mA) are obtained by growing structures that maximize the amount of current flow into the lasing spot. These values are obtained while still using standard 10 microns wide oxide-defined stripe contacts. Over the 20-70 C temperature interval, threshold current temperature coefficients as high as 320 C and a virtually constant external differential quantum efficiency, are found.

Study of Near-Threshold Fatigue Crack Propagation in Pipeline Steels in High Pressure Environments

Near threshold fatigue crack propagation in pipeline steels in high pressure environments was studied. The objective was to determine the level of threshold stress intensity for fatigue crack growth rate behavior in a high strength low alloy X60 pipeline-type steel. Complete results have been generated for gaseous hydrogen at ambient pressure, laboratory air at ambient pressure and approximately 60% relative humidity as well as vacuum of 0.000067 Pa ( 0.0000005 torr) at R-ratios = K(min)/K(max) of 0.1, 0.5, and 0.8. Fatigue crack growth rate behavior in gaseous hydrogen, methane, and methane plus 10 percent hydrogen at 6.89 MPa (100 psi) was determined.

A threshold effect for spacecraft charging

The borderline case between no charging and large (kV) negative potentials for eclipse charging events on geosynchronous satellites is investigated, and the dependence of this transition on a threshold energy in the ambient plasma is examined. Data from the Applied Technology Satellite 6 and P78-2 (SCATHA) show that plasma sheet fluxes must extend above 10 keV for these satellites to charge in eclipse. The threshold effect is a result of the shape of the normal secondary yield curve, in particular the high energy crossover, where the secondary yield drops below 1. It is found that a large portion of the ambient electron flux must exceed this energy for a negative current to exist.

Nitrogen threshold experiment

In order to obtain data on Earth geologic processes associated with wind erosion, Mar's and Venus' atmospheres were simulated. Experiments were designed to observe the effects of pressure, gravity, and density on sand movement. An experiment designed to test the operator variance was a comparative test between nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Pressure and therefore density was increased until threshold was noted. Threshold was determined at precisely the same densities of the two gases. If viscosity were a contributing factor in grain saltation the effect would be noted at low pressures. The experiment showed no such variance between carbon dioxide and nitrogen runs for low pressure (density). The largest difference in viscosity between carbon dioxide and nitrogen occurs at low pressures (densities).

Diurnal variations of cosmic ray geomagnetic cut-off threshold rigidities

The spectrographic global survey method was used to investigate the rigidity variations Rc of geomagnetic cut-off as a function of local time and the level of geomagnetic disturbance for a number of stations of the world wide network. It is shown that geomagnetic cut-off threshold rigidities undergo diurnal variations. The diurnal wave amplitude decreases with increasing threshold rigidity Rc, and the wave maximum occurs at 2 to 4 hr LT. The amplitude of diurnal variations increases with increasing geomagnetic activity. The results agree with those from trajectory calculations made for an asymmetric model of the magnetosphere during different geomagnetic disturbance conditions.

Threshold determining mechanisms for discharges in high voltage solar arrays

A theory is developed to account for the observed properties of discharges of solar arrays immersed in plasma. The theory is based on the assumption that a thin layer of insulating contaminant covers any metallic surface exposed to the plasma. Quantities derivable from the theory include a voltage threshold for arcing. The existence of the threshold and its predicted weak dependence on plasma density appear consistent with experimental results.

Low-threshold solar-pumped laser using C2F5I

Solar-pumped lasing was achieved with pentafluoroethyl iodide, C2F5I, a new alkyl-iodide. Output power and energy of 350 mW and 45 mJ were achieved. This lasant was found to have the lowest lasing threshold of any solar-pumped gas laser to date at approximately 100 solar constants. Such low threshold enables the use in space of simple, trough solar collectors.

Vibration suppression using a constrained rate-feedback Threshold control strategy

Quasi-closed form solutions are derived for the finite time, minimum force rate-feedback threshold controller to bring a system with or without known external disturbances back into an 'allowable' state manifold in finite time. The disturbances are assumed to be expandable in terms of Fourier series. The quasi-closed form solutions replace the solution of the two-point boundary value problem and definite integral constraints with the solution of algebraic equations and the calculation of matrix exponentials. Examples demonstrate the threshold control technique and compare the quasi-closed form solutions with MACSYMA generated exact solutions (for small system order) and with the numerical solution of the two-point boundary value problem.

Cloud cover over the equatorial eastern Pacific derived from July 1983 International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project data using a hybrid bispectral threshold method

A set of visible and IR data obtained with GOES from July 17-31, 1983 is analyzed using a modified version of the hybrid bispectral threshold method developed by Minnis and Harrison (1984). This methodology can be divided into a set of procedures or optional techniques to determine the proper contaminate clear-sky temperature or IR threshold. The various optional techniques are described; the options are: standard, low-temperature limit, high-reflectance limit, low-reflectance limit, coldest pixel and thermal adjustment limit, IR-only low-cloud temperature limit, IR clear-sky limit, and IR overcast limit. Variations in the cloud parameters and the characteristics and diurnal cycles of trade cumulus and stratocumulus clouds over the eastern equatorial Pacific are examined. It is noted that the new method produces substantial changes in about one third of the cloud amount retrieval; and low cloud retrievals are affected most by the new constraints.

Erosive burning threshold conditions in solid rocket motors

Erosive burning has been predicted to be enhanced by factors that increase the level of turbulence close to the propellant surface, such a high cross flow velocity, low surface blowing rate, propellant surface roughness, and adverse pressure gradient. A study is reported which was carried out with the objective of measuring the effects of these parameters on the scaling to larger rocket motor sizes of the transition to, or threshold conditions for, erosive burning rate augmentation. The results are used to develop a scaling criterion for the threshold conditions for erosive burning.
