Problems in the long-term storage of data obtained from scientific space experiments

It is shown that long-term data storage systems can be achieved when the system which organizes and conducts the scientific space experiments is equipped with a specialized subsystem: the information filing system. Its main functions are described along with the necessity of stage-by-stage development and compatibility with the data processing systems. The requirements for long-term data storage media are discussed.

Measurements of the short-term stability of quartz crystal resonators: A window on future developments in crystal oscillators

Recent measurements of the inherent short-term stability of quartz crystal resonators are presented. These measurements show that quartz resonators are much more stable for times less than 1s than the best available commercial quartz oscillators. A simple model appears to explain the noise mechanism in crystal controlled oscillators and points the way to design changes which should permit more than 2 orders of magnitude improvement in their short-term stability. Calculations show that a reference signal at 1 THz, derived from frequency multiplying a 5 MHz source with the above measured crystal stability, should have an instantaneous or fast linewidth of order 1 Hz. These calculations explicitly include the noise contribution of our present multiplier chains and are briefly outlined.

Short-term hot-hardness characteristics of five case hardened steels

Short-term hot-hardness studies were performed with carburized and hardened AISI 8620, CBS 1000, CBS 1000M, CBS 600, and Vasco X-2 steels. Case and core hardness measurements were made at temperatures from 294 to 811 K (70 to 1000 F). The data were compared with data for high-speed tool steels and AISI 52100. The materials tested can be ranked as follows in order of decreasing hot-hardness retention: (1) Vasco X-2; equivalent to through-hardened tool steels up to 644 K (700 F) above which Vasco X-2 is inferior; (2) CBS 1000, (3) CBS 1000M; (4) CBS 6000; better hardness retention at elevated temperatures than through-hardened AISI 52100; and (5) AISI 8620. For the carburized steels, the change in hardness with temperature of the case and core are similar for a given material. The short-term hot hardness of these materials can be predicted with + or - 1 point Rockwell C.

Saturn's 3 nu 3 methane band - An analysis in terms of a scattering atmosphere

Using parameters recently measured in the laboratory, the shapes of manifolds belonging to the R-branch of Saturn's 3 nu 3 CH4 band were analyzed in terms of a homogeneous scattering model of Saturn's atmosphere, and the results were compared with those of an earlier analysis in terms of a reflecting-layer model. The resulting effective pressure is an order of magnitude smaller than for the reflecting-layer analysis, and the C/H ratio is an order of magnitude higher than the solar value. The overall fit of the theoretical profiles to the observed manifold shapes is distinctly worse, especially for R(7). Scattering evidently plays only a minor role in the formation of this band along Saturn's south-central meridian.

Effects of long-term aging on ductility of the columbium alloys C-103, Cb-1Zr, and Cb-752 and the molybdenum alloy Mo-TZM

A program was conducted to determine if aging embrittlement occurs in the columbium alloys C-103, CB-1Zr, and Cb-752 or in the molybdenum alloy Mo-TZM. Results showed that aging embrittlement does not occur in C-103, Cb-1Zr, or Mo-TZM during long-term (1000 hr) aging at temperatures in the range 700 to 1025 C. In contrast, aging embrittlement did occur in the Cb-752 alloy after similar aging at 900 C. A critical combination of the solute additions W and Zr in Cb-752 led to Zr segregation at grain boundaries during long-term aging. This segregation subsequently resulted in embrittlement as indicated by an increase in the ductile-brittle transition temperature from below -1960 C to about -150 C.

The elastic modulus correction term in creep activation energies Applied to oxide dispersion strengthened superalloy

The effect of elastic modulus and the temperature dependence of elastic modulus on creep activation energies for an oxide dispersion strengthened nickel-base superalloy are investigated. This superalloy is commercially known as Inconel Alloy MA 753, strengthened both by gamma-prime precipitates and by yttria particles. It is shown that at intermediate temperatures, say below 1500 F, where elastic modulus is weakly dependent on temperature, the modulus correction term to creep activation energy is small. Accordingly, modulus corrections are insignificant for the superalloy considered, which shows high apparent creep activation energies at this temperature. On the contrary, at very high temperatures, the elastic modulus correction term can be significant, thus reducing the creep activation energy to that of vacancy self-diffusion. In order to obtain high-temperature creep resistance, a high-value elastic modulus with a weak dependence on temperature is required.

Vocabulary of aerospace safety terms pertaining to cryogenic safety, fires, explosions, and structure failure

This vocabulary listing characterizes the contents of over 10,000 documents of the NASA Aerospace Safety Research and Data Institute's (ASRDI) safety engineering collection. The ASRDI collection is now one of the series accessible on the NASA RECON data base. There are approximately 6,300 postable terms that describe literature in the areas of cryogenic fluid safety, specifically hydrogen, oxygen, liquified natural gas; fire and explosion technology; and the mechanics of structural failure. To facilitate the proper selection of information nonpostable, related and array terms have been included in this listing.

Forbidden transition probabilities for ground terms of ions with p or p5 configurations

Forbidden transition probabilities are given for ground term transitions of ions in the isoelectronic sequences with outer configurations 2s2 2p (B I), 2p5 (F I), 3s2 3p (Al I), and 3p5 (Cl I). Tables give, for each ion, the ground term interval, the associated wavelength, the quadrupole radial integral, the electric quadrupole transition probability, and the magnetic dipole transition probability. Coronal lines due to some of these ions have been observed, while others are yet to be observed. The tales for the Al I and Cl I sequences include elements up to germanium.

The long-term performance degradation of a radioisotope thermoelectric generator using silicon germanium

The successful utilization of a radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG) as the power source for spaceflight missions requires that the performance of such an RTG be predictable throughout the mission. Several mechanisms occur within the generator which tend to degrade the performance as a function of operating time. The impact which these mechanisms have on the available output power of an RTG depends primarily on such factors as time, temperature and self-limiting effects. The relative magnitudes, rates and temperature dependency of these various degradation mechanisms have been investigated separately by coupon experiments as well as 4-couple and 18-couple module experiments. This paper discusses the different individual mechanisms and summarizes their combined influence on the performance of an RTG. Also presented as part of the RTG long-term performance characteristics is the sensitivity of the available RTG output power to variations of the individual degradation mechanisms thus identifying the areas of greatest concern for a successful long-term mission.

The elimination of short and intermediate period terms from the problem of a high altitude earth satellite

The Delaunay-Similar elements of Scheifele (1976) are applied to the problem of an earth satellite that is perturbed by the sun, moon, and J2. All three effects are assumed to be the same order of magnitude. Since the external body terms depend explicitly on time, the time element appears as an additional angle variable. Also, the eccentric anomaly is used as a noncanonical auxiliary variable. A solution to the first Von Zeipel equation allows simultaneous elimination of short- and intermediate-period terms. The canonical transformation to mean elements is defined by a generating function that is a series involving Bessel coefficients.

Effects of long-term aging on ductility and microstructure of Cb and Mo alloys

A program was conducted to determine if aging embrittlement occurs in columbium-base alloys C-103, Cb-1Zr, and Cb-752 or in a molybdenum alloy, Mo-TZM. Results showed that aging embrittlement does not occur in C-103, Cb-1Zr, or Mo-TZM during long-term (1000 hour) aging at temperatures in the range of 700-1025 C. In comparison, aging embrittlement occurred in the Cb-752 alloy after similar aging at 900 C. A critical combination of the solute additions W and Zr led to Zr segregation at grain boundaries during long-term aging which subsequently resulted in embrittlement as indicated by an increase in the ductile-brittle transition temperature from below -196 C to about -150 C.

Spectroscopic studies of O-type stars. VIII - Radial velocities and the K-term

Radial velocities are measured on coude spectrograms of over 200 O-type stars in both hemispheres. The selection of effective wavelengths for the stellar lines to be measured is reviewed, and the measured velocities are compared with those available in a catalog of O stars. The Trumpler (1935) effect (a reported anomalous redshift in certain O stars) is inconclusively reinvestigated, atmospheric motions in Of stars are examined, and some kinematic properties of O stars are discussed statistically. It is found that 58% of all O stars and 41% of all the Of stars considered are certain or probable binaries. A K-term in the range from 1 to 2 km/s is derived for the O stars, but the Of stars are shown to have a highly significant negative K-term. It is suggested that the systematically negative peculiar velocities of the Of stars are due to outflow of material beginning at the photospheric level.

Photovoltaic highway applications: Assessment of the near-term market

A preliminary assessment of the near-term market for photovoltaic highway applications is presented. Among the potential users, two market sectors are considered: government and commercial. Within these sectors, two possible application areas, signs and motorist aids, are discussed. Based on judgemental information, obtained by a brief survey of representatives of the two user sectors, the government sector appears more amenable to the introduction of photovoltaic power sources for highway applications in the near-term. However, considerable interest and potential opportunities were also found to exist in the commercial sector. Further studies to quantify the market for highway applications appear warranted.

Long-term studies with the Ariel-5 asm. 1: Her X-1, Vela X-1 and Cen X-3

Twelve hundred days of 3-6 keV X-ray data from Her X-1, Vela X-1 and Cen X-3 accumulated with the Ariel-5 all-sky monitor are interrogated. The binary periodicities of all three can be clearly observed, as can the approximately 35-d variation of Her X-1, for which we can refine the period to 34.875 plus or minus .030-d. No such longer-term periodicity less than 200-d is observed from Vela X-1. The 26.6-d low-state recurrence period for Cen X-3 previously suggested is not observed, but a 43.0-d candidate periodicity is found which may be consistent with the precession of an accretion disk in that system. The present results are illustrative of the long-term studies which can be performed on approximately 50 sources over a temporal base which will ultimately extend to at least 1800 days.

Long-term variability of dMe stars

Photographic B magnitudes of the four spot stars BY Dra (dM0e), CC Eri (K7 Ve), AU Mic (dM2.5e), and YZ CMi (dM4.5e) are reported which considerably extend the time baseline of the photoelectric data on these stars. The long-term variation of the stars in yearly mean light is investigated. It is found that both BY Dra and CC Eri exhibit long-term B-magnitude variations with amplitudes of about 0.3 to 0.4 magnitude and times between maximum and minimum light near 30 yr. No apparent variability is observed for AU Mic and YZ CMi. The possibility is discussed that the variability of BY Dra and CC Eri is connected with a starspot cycle, for which the period would be around 60 yr.

Conceptual design of thermal energy storage systems for near term electric utility applications

Potential concepts for near term electric utility applications were identified. The most promising ones for conceptual design were evaluated for their economic feasibility and cost benefits. The screening process resulted in selecting two coal-fired and two nuclear plants for detailed conceptual design. The coal plants utilized peaking turbines and the nuclear plants varied the feedwater extraction to change power output. It was shown that the performance and costs of even the best of these systems could not compete in near term utility applications with cycling coal plants and typical gas turbines available for peaking power. Lower electricity costs, greater flexibility of operation, and other benefits can be provided by cycling coal plants for greater than 1500 hours of peaking or by gas turbines for less than 1500 hours if oil is available and its cost does not increase significantly.
