Radiation Observations with Satellite 1958 Alpha Explorer I

On 1 February 1958 at 0348 U.T. earth satellite 1958 Alpha (Explorer I) was launched from Cape Canaveral. This satellite contained a Geiger Muller tube for the measurement of the flux of energetic charged particles, and detectors for determining the micrometeorite flux and satellite temperature (see Figure 1), The high power transmitter and its associated instrumentation operated until partial exhaustion of the transmitter batteries on 12 February 1958. The transmitter reappeared briefly on 24 February, The low power system operated properly until about 0700 U,T, on 16 March, at which time the batteries powering the G.M. tube circuits became exhausted. During the operating time a large amount of data was recorded by a network of seventeen receiving stations. A sampling of early recordings was reduced and analyzed as they arrived from the receiving stations. These data, in conjunction with data from the first few orbits of 1958 Gamma (Explorer III), resulted in the announcement on 1 May 1958 of the region of high intensity radiation surrounding the earth (Van Allen, 1958), The detailed, complete reduction of the 1958 Alpha data has now been completed, This paper is a tabulation of all the data received from this satellite. It consists primarily of two parts. The first part is the master recording log on which are listed all recordings of the satellite signals obtained by the receiving station network. The actual data tabulation is contained in part two.

A table of semiempirical gf values. Part 1: Wavelengths: 5.2682 nm to 272.3380 nm

The gf values for 265,587 atomic lines selected from the line data used to calculate line-blanketed model atmospheres are tabulated. These data are especially useful for line identification and spectral synthesis in solar and stellar spectra. The gf values are calculated semiempirically by using scaled Thomas-Fermi-Dirac radial wavefunctions and eigenvectors found through least-squares fits to observed energy levels. Included in the calculation are the first five or six stages of ionization for sequences up through nickel. Published gf values are included for elements heavier than nickel. The tabulation is restricted to lines with wavelengths less than 10 micrometers.

PLOTTER: An independent computer program for the generation of graphical displays

A computer program is described for generating graphical information from input data or auxiliary analysis programs on a variety of graphical devices. Options are presented for tabulating the data in columnar format and for plotting auxiliary text in the vicinity of the plotted information. Display device selection is accomplished by interfacing the basic computer code through routines which convert the internally generated plot vectors to hardware commands for the display device. The plotting techniques employed in the computer program are discussed. User's instructions are presented with examples which illustrate the use of the program in generating plotted information from various sources and presenting the information in alternate plot formats. Technical discussion of the computer code is presented giving the physical characteristics, computer loading instructions and descriptions of the subroutines.

Ultraviolet photometry from the Orbiting Astronomical Observatory. XXXIV - Filter photometry of 531 stars of diverse types

Ultraviolet magnitudes for 531 stars observed with the Wisconsin Experiment Package on OAO 2 are tabulated. It is noted that these data constitute a subset of the OAO 2 data on file at the National Space Science Data Center. The tabulation contains previously published data all reduced to a uniform magnitude system. It is pointed out that the observations were obtained with the medium band interference filter photometers. Eleven magnitudes are given designated by their centroid wavelengths.

Cloud-encounter and particle-concentration variabilities from GASP data

Summary statistics, tabulations, and variability studies are presented for cloud encounter and particle concentration data taken as part of the NASA global atmospheric sampling program. Cloud encounter was experienced in about 15 percent of the data samples; however, the percentage varies with season, latitude, and altitude (particularly distance from the tropopause). In agreement with classical storm models, the data show more clouds in the upper troposphere in anticyclones than in cyclones. The concentration of particles with a diameter greater than 3 micron also varies with time and location, depending primarily on the horizontal extent of cloudiness. Some examples of the application of the statistical data to the estimation of the frequency of cloud encounter and laminar flow loss to be expected on long range airline routes are also presented.

Physically weighted approximations of unsteady aerodynamic forces using the minimum-state method

The Minimum-State Method for rational approximation of unsteady aerodynamic force coefficient matrices, modified to allow physical weighting of the tabulated aerodynamic data, is presented. The approximation formula and the associated time-domain, state-space, open-loop equations of motion are given, and the numerical procedure for calculating the approximation matrices, with weighted data and with various equality constraints are described. Two data weighting options are presented. The first weighting is for normalizing the aerodynamic data to maximum unit value of each aerodynamic coefficient. The second weighting is one in which each tabulated coefficient, at each reduced frequency value, is weighted according to the effect of an incremental error of this coefficient on aeroelastic characteristics of the system. This weighting yields a better fit of the more important terms, at the expense of less important ones. The resulting approximate yields a relatively low number of aerodynamic lag states in the subsequent state-space model. The formulation forms the basis of the MIST computer program which is written in FORTRAN for use on the MicroVAX computer and interfaces with NASA's Interaction of Structures, Aerodynamics and Controls (ISAC) computer program. The program structure, capabilities and interfaces are outlined in the appendices, and a numerical example which utilizes Rockwell's Active Flexible Wing (AFW) model is given and discussed.

Tabulation and summary of thermodynamic effects data for developed cavitation on ogive-nosed bodies

Thermodynamic effects data for developed cavitation on zero and quarter caliber ogives in Freon 113 and water are tabulated and summarized. These data include temperature depression (delta T), flow coefficient (C sub Q), and various geometrical characteristics of the cavity. For the delta T tests, the free-stream temperature varied from 35 C to 95 C in Freon 113 and from 60 C to 125 C in water for a velocity range of 19.5 m/sec to 36.6 m/sec. Two correlations of the delta T data by the entrainment method are presented. These correlations involve different combinations of the Nusselt, Reynolds, Froude, Weber, and Peclet numbers and dimensionless cavity length.

Data analysis for Skylab proton spectrometer

The measured values are compared to values derived from a proton environment model. Spectral data are compared, the omni-directional fluxes are found, a range of assumed pitch angle distributions are established, and the values which would be seen by an idealized proton spectrometer immersed in the model environment are computed. The measured values and calculated values are summed over time, then ratiod to provide spectral correction factors. The data are tabulated according to location, pitch angle, energy, assumed pitch angle distribution, and orientation in the earth-fixed coordinate system. With the aid of this data, detailed corrections to the proton model environment are derived. Best-fit, energy-dependent pitch angle distributions are also obtained. Some information is derived concerning the east-west asymmetry.

Experimental Investigation of a Five-stage Axial-flow Research Compressor with Transonic Rotors in All Stages III : Interstage Data and Individual Stage Performance Characteristics

For use in computing the detailed performance parameters of individual blade rows of a multistage compressor, radial distributions of total pressure, total temperature, static pressure and air-flow angle are tabulated. The data cover a range of air flow from choke to the approximate surge limit for equivalent rotor speeds from 70 to 100 percent of design. Equivalent stage performance curves determined from the radial survey measurements indicate both the individual performance and the matching of the stages at the speeds investigated.
