Effect of impurities and processing on silicon solar cells. Volume 1: Characterization methods for impurities in silicon and impurity effects data base

Two major topics are treated: methods to measure and evaluate impurity effects in silicon and comprehensive tabulations of data derived during the study. Discussions of deep level spectroscopy, detailed dark I-V measurements, recombination lifetime determination, scanned laser photo-response, conventional solar cell I-V techniques, and descriptions of silicon chemical analysis are presented and discussed. The tabulated data include lists of impurity segregation coefficients, ingot impurity analyses and estimated concentrations, typical deep level impurity spectra, photoconductive and open circuit decay lifetimes for individual metal-doped ingots, and a complete tabulation of the cell I-V characteristics of nearly 200 ingots.

Cubic spline function interpolation in atmosphere models for the software development laboratory: Formulation and data

A tabulation of selected altitude-correlated values of pressure, density, speed of sound, and coefficient of viscosity for each of six models of the atmosphere is presented in block data format. Interpolation for the desired atmospheric parameters is performed by using cubic spline functions. The recursive relations necessary to compute the cubic spline function coefficients are derived and implemented in subroutine form. Three companion subprograms, which form the preprocessor and processor, are also presented. These subprograms, together with the data element, compose the spline fit atmosphere package. Detailed FLOWGM flow charts and FORTRAN listings of the atmosphere package are presented in the appendix.

Field validation of data-driven BSDF and peak extraction models for light-scattering fabric shades

Shading and daylighting systems affect cooling, heating, and lighting energy use by modulating solar radiation through the building façade. Characterizing shading systems holistically and accurately helps designers and engineers evaluate shading systems to achieve energy and non-energy performance goals. These complex fenestration systems can be modeled using Bidirectional Scattering Distribution Functions (BSDF), which map incident radiation to hemispherical distributions of outgoing radiation. Data-driven, tabulated BSDFs are derived from interpolated goniophotometer measured data, then sampled during the raytracing calculation. A peak extraction (PE) algorithm was developed to circumvent limits in BSDF angular resolution, where the specular peak is extracted during simulation by evaluating the BSDF in the through direction and surrounding region. The objective of this study was to validate this measurement and modeling workflow using field monitored data from a full scale testbed with eleven installed fabrics of different weaves, openness factors, and colors and assess the accuracy of the workflow under different adaptation and contrast conditions. Test conditions were limited to clear sky conditions with the sun in the field of view. Results showed that, for tensor tree datasets, vertical illuminance, solar luminance (2.5° apex), and daylight glare probability (DGP) were predicted to within a mean bias error (MBE) error of -456 lx (-12.3%), -3.46e5 (-38.4%), and -0.042 (-7.8%) when full PE occurred. With a binary classification of glare/ no glare, DGP was predicted accurately with a true positive rate of 0.98 and true negative rate of 1.0 using tensor tree data and less accurately with Klems BSDF data, particularly for cases of no glare. The workflow may be of insufficient accuracy to distinguish borderline performance between fabrics using the four-point glare scale, particularly under low adaptation, high contrast daylit conditions. Errors were due to reductions in peak shape and intensity across the BSDF interpolation and data reduction workflow. Future work is needed to better preserve measurement fidelity during interpolation and sampling, which in turn will improve PE performance.

Radiation Observations with Satellite 1958 Alpha Explorer I

On 1 February 1958 at 0348 U.T. earth satellite 1958 Alpha (Explorer I) was launched from Cape Canaveral. This satellite contained a Geiger Muller tube for the measurement of the flux of energetic charged particles, and detectors for determining the micrometeorite flux and satellite temperature (see Figure 1), The high power transmitter and its associated instrumentation operated until partial exhaustion of the transmitter batteries on 12 February 1958. The transmitter reappeared briefly on 24 February, The low power system operated properly until about 0700 U,T, on 16 March, at which time the batteries powering the G.M. tube circuits became exhausted. During the operating time a large amount of data was recorded by a network of seventeen receiving stations. A sampling of early recordings was reduced and analyzed as they arrived from the receiving stations. These data, in conjunction with data from the first few orbits of 1958 Gamma (Explorer III), resulted in the announcement on 1 May 1958 of the region of high intensity radiation surrounding the earth (Van Allen, 1958), The detailed, complete reduction of the 1958 Alpha data has now been completed, This paper is a tabulation of all the data received from this satellite. It consists primarily of two parts. The first part is the master recording log on which are listed all recordings of the satellite signals obtained by the receiving station network. The actual data tabulation is contained in part two.

Soil-moisture ground truth, Hand County, South Dakota

Soil samples were taken in the field and carefully preserved in taped metal containers for later laboratory gravimetric analysis to determine soil-moisture content. The typical sampling pattern used in this mission is illustrated, and the soil types encountered on the soil-moisture lines are summarized. The actual soil-moisture data were tabulated by range, township and section. Soil-moisture data obtained in fields of winter wheat and spring wheat are briefly summarized.
