Search for pair production of higgsinos in events with two Higgs bosons and missing transverse momentum in $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at the ATLAS experiment

This paper presents a search for pair production of higgsinos, the supersymmetric partners of the Higgs bosons, in scenarios with gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. Each higgsino is assumed to decay into a Higgs boson and a nearly massless gravitino. The search targets events where each Higgs boson decays into $b\bar{b}$, leading to a reconstructed final state with at least three energetic 𝑏-jets and missing transverse momentum. Two complementary analysis channels are used, with each channel specifically targeting either low or high values of the higgsino mass. The low-mass (high-mass) channel exploits 126 (139) fb −1 of $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV data collected by the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess above the Standard Model prediction is found. At 95% confidence level, masses between 130 GeV and 940 GeV are excluded for higgsinos decaying exclusively into Higgs bosons and gravitinos. Exclusion limits as a function of the higgsino decay branching ratio to a Higgs boson are also reported.

Lie-algebraic Kähler sigma models with U(1) isotropy

We discuss various questions that emerge in connection with the Lie-algebraic deformation of the sigma model in two dimensions. First, we supersymmetrize the original model endowing it with the minimal and extended supersymmetries. Then we derive the general hypercurrent anomaly in both cases. In the latter case this anomaly is one-loop but is somewhat different from the standard expressions one can find in the literature because the target manifold is nonsymmetric. We also show how to introduce the twisted masses and the term, and study the Bogomol’nyi–Prasad–Sommerfield equation for instantons, in particular the value of the topological charge. Then we demonstrate that the second loop in the function of the nonsupersymmetric Lie-algebraic sigma model is due to an infrared effect. To this end we use a supersymmetric regularization. We also conjecture that the above statement is valid for higher loops too, similar to the parallel phenomenon in four-dimensional super-Yang-Mills. In the second part of the paper we develop a special dimensional reduction—namely, starting from the two-dimensional Lie-algebraic model we arrive at a quasi-exactly solvable quantum-mechanical problem of the Lamé type.

Stau pairs from natural SUSY at high luminosity LHC

Natural supersymmetry (SUSY) with light Higgsinos is perhaps the most plausible of all weak scale SUSY models while a variety of motivations point to (right) tau sleptons as the lightest of all the sleptons. We examine a SUSY model line with rather light right staus embedded within natural SUSY. For light τ ˜ 1 of a few hundred GeV, the decays τ ˜ 1 → τ χ ˜ 1 , 2 0 and ν τ χ ˜ 1 − occur at comparable rates where the (Higgsino-like) χ ˜ 1 ± and χ ˜ 2 0 release only small visible energy: in this case, the expected τ + τ − + E T signature is diminished from the usual expectations due to the presence of the nearly invisible decay mode τ ˜ 1 → ν τ χ ˜ 1 − . However, once m τ ˜ 1 ≳ m ( b i n o ) , decays to binos such as τ ˜ 1 → τ χ ˜ 3 0 open up where χ ˜ 3 0 decays to Higgsinos plus W ± , Z 0 , and h at comparable rates. For these heavier staus, the stau pair production gives rise to diboson + E T events, which may contain 0, 1, or 2 additional hard τ leptons. From these considerations, we examine the potential for future discovery of tau-slepton pair production at a high-luminosity LHC. While we do not find a 5 σ HL-LHC discovery reach for 3000 fb − 1 , we do find a 95% CL exclusion reach, ranging between m τ ˜ 1 : 100 – 450 GeV for m χ ˜ 1 0 ∼ 100 GeV . This latter reach disappears for m χ ˜ 1 0 ≳ 200 GeV . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Precise interpretations of traditional fine-tuning measures

We uncover two precise interpretations of traditional electroweak fine-tuning (FT) measures that were historically missed. (i) a statistical interpretation : the traditional FT measure shows the change in plausibility of a model in which a parameter was exchanged for the 𝑍 boson mass relative to an untuned model in light of the 𝑍 boson mass measurement. (ii) an information-theoretic interpretation : the traditional FT measure shows the exponential of the extra information, measured in nats, relative to an untuned model that you must supply about a parameter in order to fit the 𝑍 mass. We derive the mathematical results underlying these interpretations, and explain them using examples from weak scale supersymmetry. These new interpretations allow us to rigorously define FT in particle physics and beyond, shed fresh light on the status of extensions to the Standard Model and, lastly, allow us to precisely reinterpret historical and recent studies using traditional FT measures.

Three-Dimensional Topological Field Theories and Nonunitary Minimal Models

We find an intriguing relation between a class of three-dimensional nonunitary topological field theories (TFTs) and Virasoro minimal models M ( 2 , 2 r + 3 ) with r ≥ 1 . The TFTs are constructed by topologically twisting 3D N = 4 superconformal field theories (SCFTs) of rank-0, i.e., having zero-dimensional Coulomb and Higgs branches. We present ultraviolet (UV) field theory descriptions of the SCFTs with manifest N = 2 supersymmetry, which we argue is enhanced to N = 4 in the infrared. From the UV description, we compute various partition functions of the TFTs and reproduce some basic properties of the minimal models, such as their characters and modular matrices. We expect more general correspondence between topologically twisted 3d N = 4 rank-0 SCFTs and 2D nonunitary rational conformal field theories. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Dynamics of the simplest chiral gauge theories

Arguably, the simplest chiral gauge theories are SO(10) with 𝑁 𝑓 fermion fields in the spinor representation 𝟏𝟔. We study their dynamics using their supersymmetric limits perturbed by an infinitesimal anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking as a guide. We predict the theory is gapped for 𝑁 𝑓 = 1, 2, while the SU⁡(𝑁 𝑓 ) global symmetry is broken to SO⁡(N 𝑓 ) for moderately large 𝑁 𝑓 ≥ 3.

Search for displaced leptons in $\sqrt{𝑠}$ =13 TeV and 13.6 TeV 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search for leptons displaced from the primary vertex is performed with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The search includes the full proton-proton collision dataset collected during Run 2 at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV and a partial dataset collected during Run 3 in 2022–2023 at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13.6 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 140 fb −1 and 56.3 fb −1 , respectively. Final states with displaced electrons or muons are considered, and novel triggers introduced in Run 3 are employed that use large impact parameter tracking to reconstruct displaced tracks with low momentum. In addition, photon reconstruction and multivariate techniques are employed to broaden the sensitivity to channels with large background rates or highly displaced electrons, respectively. The results are consistent with the Standard Model background expectations and are used to set model-independent limits on the production of displaced electrons and muons. The analysis is also interpreted in the context of a gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking model with pair-produced long-lived sleptons and a dark sector model with pair-produced chargino-like states. The results include 95% confidence level exclusions of selectrons with lifetimes from 4 ps to 60 ns and a mass of 150 GeV, and exclusions of selectrons, smuons, and staus with a lifetime of 0.3 ns for masses up to 740, 830, and 440 GeV, respectively. Dark charginos with masses up to 380 GeV are excluded for a mass difference with the neutral state of 40 GeV, and mass differences down to 17 GeV are excluded for dark charginos with a 100 GeV mass.

Search for phenomena beyond the Standard Model in events with large $b$-jet multiplicity using the ATLAS detector at the LHC

A search is presented for new phenomena in events characterised by high jet multiplicity, no leptons (electrons or muons), and four or more jets originating from the fragmentation of b -quarks ( b -jets). The search uses 139 fb -1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton–proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider during Run 2. The dominant Standard Model background originates from multijet production and is estimated using a data-driven technique based on an extrapolation from events with low b -jet multiplicity to the high b -jet multiplicities used in the search. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is observed and 95% confidence-level limits that constrain simplified models of R-parity-violating supersymmetry are determined. The exclusion limits reach 950 GeV in top-squark mass in the models considered.

A minimal supersymmetric SU(5) missing-partner model

We explore a missing-partner model based on the minimal SU(5) gauge group with 75, 50 and 50¯ Higgs representations, assuming a super-GUT CMSSM scenario in which soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters are universal at some high scale Min above the GUT scale MGUT. We identify regions of parameter space that are consistent with the cosmological dark matter density, the measured Higgs mass and the experimental lower limit on τ(p → K + ν). These constraints can be satisfied simultaneously along stop coannihilation strips in the super-GUT CMSSM with tanβ ~ 3.5–5 where the input gaugino mass m 1/2 ~15–25 TeV, corresponding after strong renormalization by the large GUT Higgs representations between M in and M GUT to m LSP ,m t ~ 1 ~ 2.5–5 TeV and m g ~ ~ 13–20 TeV, with the light-flavor squarks significantly heavier. We find that τ(p → K + ν) ≲ 3 × 10 34 years throughout the allowed range of parameter space, within the range of the next generation of searches with the JUNO, DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande experiments.

Search for chargino–neutralino pair production in final states with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in $$\sqrt{s} = 13$$ TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search for chargino–neutralino pair production in three-lepton final states with missing transverse momentum is presented. The study is based on a dataset of $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV pp collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . No significant excess relative to the Standard Model predictions is found in data. The results are interpreted in simplified models of supersymmetry, and statistically combined with results from a previous ATLAS search for compressed spectra in two-lepton final states. Various scenarios for the production and decay of charginos ($\tilde{χ}^±_1$) and neutralinos ($\tilde{χ}^0_2$) are considered. For pure higgsino $\tilde{χ}^±_1$$\tilde{χ}^0_2$ pair-production scenarios, exclusion limits at 95% confidence level are set on $\tilde{χ}^0_2$ masses up to 210 GeV. Limits are also set for pure wino $\tilde{χ}^±_1$$\tilde{χ}^0_2$ pair production, on $\tilde{χ}^0_2$ masses up to 640 GeV for decays via on-shell W and Z bosons, up to 300 GeV for decays via off-shell W and Z bosons, and up to 190 GeV for decays via W and Standard Model Higgs bosons.

Flipped $\mathbf{g_\mu - 2}$

We analyze the possible magnitude of the supersymmetric contribution to $g_\mu - 2$ in a flipped SU(5) GUT model. Unlike other GUT models which are severely constrained by universality relations, in flipped SU(5) the U(1) gaugino mass and the soft supersymmetry-breaking masses of right-handed sleptons are unrelated to the other gaugino, slepton and squark masses. Consequently, the lightest neutralino and the right-handed smuon may be light enough to mitigate the discrepancy between the experimental measurement of $g_\mu - 2$ and the Standard Model calculation, in which case they may be detectable at the LHC and/or a 250 GeV $e^+ e^-$ collider, whereas the other gauginos and sfermions are heavy enough to escape detection at the LHC.

Muon $$\mathbf {g-2}$$, neutralino dark matter and stau NLSP

Abstract We explore the implications of resolving the muon $$g-2$$ g - 2 anomaly in a $$SU(4)_c \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$$ S U ( 4 ) c × S U ( 2 ) L × S U ( 2 ) R model, where the soft supersymmetry breaking scalar and gaugino masses break the left-right (LR) symmetry. A 2 $$\sigma $$ σ resolution of the anomaly requires relatively light sleptons, chargino and LSP neutralino. The stau turns out to be the NLSP of mass $$m_{\tilde{\tau }}\lesssim 400$$ m τ ~ ≲ 400 GeV, and the sleptons from the first two families can be as heavy as about 800 GeV. The chargino is also required to be lighter than about 600 GeV to accommodate the muon $$g-2$$ g - 2 solutions consistent with the dark matter relic density constraint. The dominant right-handed nature of the light slepton states suppress the sensitivity of possible signals which can be probed in Run3 experiments at the LHC. We also discuss the impact of accommodating the Higgs boson mass and the vacuum stability of the scalar potential for these solutions. Although a light stau can be compatible with the stability of the scalar potential, the Higgs boson mass constraint has a strong impact on the solutions with $$\tan \beta $$ tan β bounded from above, namely $$\tan \beta \lesssim 20$$ tan β ≲ 20 . The Higgsinos are heavier than about 4 TeV, and the LSP neutralino has the correct relic density if it is Bino-like. We identify stau–neutralino coannihilation as the dominant mechanism for realizing the desired dark matter relic density, with sneutrino–neutralino coannihiliation playing a minor role. These bino-like dark matter solutions can yield a spin-independent scattering cross-section on the order of $$10^{-13}$$ 10 - 13 pb which hopefully, can be expected to be tested in the near future.

Searches for new phenomena in events with two leptons, jets, and missing transverse momentum in 139 fb –1 of √s = 13 TeV $pp$ collisions with the ATLAS detector

Searches for new phenomena inspired by supersymmetry in final states containing an e + e – or μ + μ – pair, jets, and missing transverse momentum are presented. These searches make use of proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 , collected during 2015–2018 at a centre-of-mass energy √s = 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Two searches target the pair production of charginos and neutralinos. One uses the recursive-jigsaw reconstruction technique to follow up on excesses observed in 36.1 fb –1 of data, and the other uses conventional event variables. The third search targets pair production of coloured supersymmetric particles (squarks or gluinos) decaying through the next-to-lightest neutralino ($\tilde{χ}$$^{0}_{2}$) via a slepton ($\tilde{ℓ}$) or Z boson into ℓ + ℓ – $\tilde{χ}$$^{0}_{1}$ , resulting in a kinematic endpoint or peak in the dilepton invariant mass spectrum. The data are found to be consistent with the Standard Model expectations. Results are interpreted using simplified models and exclude masses up to 900 GeV for electroweakinos, 1550 GeV for squarks, and 2250 GeV for gluinos.

Electroweak loop contributions to the direct detection of wino dark matter

Electroweak loop corrections to the matrix elements for the spin-independent scattering of cold dark matter particles on nuclei are generally small, typically below the uncertainty in the local density of cold dark matter. However, as shown in this paper, there are instances in which the electroweak loop corrections are relatively large, and change significantly the spin-independent dark matter scattering rate. An important example occurs when the dark matter particle is a wino, e.g., in anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB) and pure gravity mediation (PGM) models. We find that the one-loop electroweak corrections to the spin-independent wino LSP scattering cross section generally interfere constructively with the tree-level contribution for AMSB models with negative Higgsino mixing, μ < 0, and in PGM-like models for both signs of μ, lifting the cross section out of the neutrino fog and into a range that is potentially detectable in the next generation of direct searches for cold dark matter scattering.

Search for squarks and gluinos in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV and 13.6 TeV in events with $\tau$-leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum using the ATLAS detector

A search for R-parity-conserving supersymmetry in events with large missing transverse momentum, jets and at least one hadronically decaying $\tau$-lepton is presented. Both gluino and squark pair production are considered, with the cascade decay of each gluino or squark producing either a $\tau$-slepton or a $\tau$-sneutrino. Three channels are examined, requiring either exactly one hadronically decaying $\tau$-lepton and no other leptons, exactly one hadronically decaying $\tau$-lepton and at least one other lepton, or two or more hadronically decaying $\tau$-leptons. Analyses in the three channels are optimised independently and combined statistically. Two separate analysis strategies, either a cut-and-count or machine-learning approach, are used. The search uses 140 and 51.8 of pp collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider during 2015–2018 at TeV and 2022–2023 at TeV, respectively. Gluino masses below 2.25 TeV and squark masses up to 1.7 TeV are excluded

Building models of inflation in no-scale supergravity

After reviewing the motivations for cosmological inflation formulated in the formalism of supersymmetry, we argue that the appropriate framework is that of no-scale supergravity. We then show how to construct within this framework inflationary models whose predictions for the tilt in the spectrum of scalar perturbations, n s , and the ratio, r, of tensor and scalar perturbations coincide with those of the R+R 2 model of inflation proposed by Starobinsky. Here, a more detailed study of no-scale supergravity reveals a structure that is closely related to that of R 2 modifications of the minimal Einstein–Hilbert action for general relativity, opening avenues for constructing no-scale de Sitter and anti-de Sitter models by combining pairs of Minkowski models, as well as generalizations of the original no-scale Starobinsky models of inflation.

Looking at supersymmetric black holes for a very long time

We study correlation functions for extremal supersymmetric black holes. It is necessary to take into account the strongly coupled nature of the boundary supergraviton mode. We consider the case with {\cal N}=2 supercharges which is the minimal amount of supersymmetry needed to give a large ground state degeneracy, separated from the continuum. Using the exact solution for this theory we derive formulas for the two point function and we also give integral expressions for any n n -point correlator. These correlators are time independent at large times and approach constant values that depend on the masses and couplings of the bulk theory. We also explain that in the non-supersymmetric case, the correlators develop a universal time dependence at long times. This paper is the longer companion paper of arXiv:2207.00407.

BPS chaos

Black holes are chaotic quantum systems that are expected to exhibit random matrix statistics in their finite energy spectrum. Lin, Maldacena, Rozenberg and Shan (LMRS) have proposed a related characterization of chaos for the ground states of BPS black holes with finite area horizons. On a separate front, the “fuzzball program” has uncovered large families of horizon-free geometries that account for the entropy of holographic BPS systems, but only in situations with sufficient supersymmetry to exclude finite area horizons. The highly structured, non-random nature of these solutions seems in tension with strong chaos. We verify this intuition by performing analytic and numerical calculations of the LMRS diagnostic in the corresponding boundary quantum system. In particular we examine the 1/2 and 1/4-BPS sectors of \mathcal{N}=4 𝒩 = 4 SYM, and the two charge sector of the D1-D5 CFT. We find evidence that these systems are only weakly chaotic, with a Thouless time determining the onset of chaos that grows as a power of N N . In contrast, finite horizon area BPS black holes should be strongly chaotic, with a Thouless time of order one. In this case, finite energy chaotic states become BPS as N N is decreased through the recently discovered “fortuity” mechanism. Hence they can plausibly retain their strongly chaotic character.
