Unconventional self-similar Hofstadter superconductivity from repulsive interactions

Abstract Fractal Hofstadter bands have become widely accessible with the advent of moiré superlattices, opening the door to studies of the effect of interactions in these systems. In this work we employ a renormalization group (RG) analysis to demonstrate that the combination of repulsive interactions with the presence of a tunable manifold of Van Hove singularities provides a new mechanism for driving unconventional superconductivity in Hofstadter bands. Specifically, the number of Van Hove singularities at the Fermi energy can be controlled by varying the flux per unit cell and the electronic filling, leading to instabilities toward nodal superconductivity and chiral topological superconductivity with Chern number $${{{{{{{\mathcal{C}}}}}}}}=\pm 6$$ C = ± 6 . The latter is characterized by a self-similar fixed trajectory of the RG flow and an emerging self-similarity symmetry of the order parameter. Our results establish Hofstadter quantum materials such as moiré heterostructures as promising platforms for realizing novel reentrant Hofstadter superconductors.

Order-parameter evolution in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase

Here, we report on the temperature dependence of the spatially modulated spin-polarization amplitude ΔK spin , which is a hallmark of the superconducting Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. For that, we use 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy performed on the organic conductor β" -(ET) 2 SF 5 CH 2 CF 2 SO 3 . From a comparison of our experimental results to a comprehensive modeling of the 13 C NMR spectra, we determine the evolution of ΔK spin upon condensation of the FFLO state. Further, the modeling of the spectra in the superconducting phase allows to quantify the decrease of the average spin susceptibility, stemming from the spin-singlet coupling of the superconducting electron pairs in the FFLO state of β" -(ET) 2 SF 5 CH 2 CF 2 SO 3 .

Cluster Variation Method Analysis of Correlations and Entropy in BCC Solid Solutions

Solid solutions occur when multiple chemical species share sites of a common crystal lattice. Although the single site occupation is random, chemical interaction preferences bias the occupation probabilities of neighboring sites, and this bias reduced the entropy of mixing below its ideal value. Sufficiently strong bias leads to symmetry-breaking phase transitions. Here, we apply the cluster variation method to explore solid solutions on body centered cubic lattices in the context of two specific compounds that exhibit opposite ordering trends. Employing density functional theory to model the energetics, we show that CuZn exhibits an order-disorder transition to the CsCl prototype structure, while AlLi instead takes the NaTl prototype structure, and we evaluate their temperature-dependent order parameters, correlations and entropies.

Pervasive beyond Room-Temperature Ferromagnetism in a Doped van der Waals Magnet

The existence of long-range magnetic order in low-dimensional magnetic systems, such as the quasi-two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) magnets, has attracted intensive studies of new physical phenomena. The vdW Fe N GeTe 2 (N = 3, 4, 5; FGT) family is exceptional, owing to its vast tunability of magnetic properties. In particular, a ferromagnetic ordering temperature (T C ) above room temperature at N = 5 (F5GT) is observed. Here, our work shows that, by nickel (Ni) substitution of iron in F5GT, a record high T C =478(6) K is achieved. Importantly, pervasive, beyond room-temperature ferromagnetism exists in almost the entire doping range of the phase diagram of Ni-F5GT. We argue that this striking observation in Ni-F5GT can be possibly due to several contributing factors, including increased 3D magnetic couplings due to the structural alterations.

Impurity-Induced Anomalous Thermal Hall Effect in Chiral Superconductors

Chiral superconductors exhibit novel transport properties that rely on the topology of the order parameter, topology of the Fermi surface, the spectrum of bulk and edge Fermionic excitations, and the structure of the impurity potential. In the case of electronic heat transport, impurities induce an anomalous (zero-field) thermal Hall conductivity that is easily orders of magnitude larger than the quantized edge contribution. The effect originates from branch-conversion scattering of Bogoliubov quasiparticles by the chiral order parameter, induced by potential scattering. The former transfers angular momentum between the condensate and the excitations that transport heat. The anomalous thermal Hall conductivity is shown to depend to the structure of the electron-impurity potential, as well as the winding number ν of the chiral order parameter $Δ(p)=|Δ(p)|e^{iν\phi_p}$. The results provide quantitative formulas for interpreting heat transport experiments seeking to identify broken T and P symmetries, as well as the topology of the order parameter for chiral superconductors.

Bogoliubov quasiparticle on the gossamer Fermi surface in electron-doped cuprates

Electron-doped cuprates consistently exhibit strong antiferromagnetic correlations, leading to the prevalent belief that antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations mediate Cooper pairing in these unconventional superconductors. However, early investigations showed that although antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations create the largest pseudogap at hot spots in momentum space, the superconducting gap is also maximized at these locations. This presented a paradox for spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing: Cooper pairing is strongest at momenta where the normal-state low-energy spectral weight is most suppressed. Here we investigate this paradox and find evidence that a gossamer—meaning very faint—Fermi surface can provide an explanation for these observations. We study Nd 2–x Ce x CuO 4 using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and directly observe the Bogoliubov quasiparticles. First, we resolve the previously observed reconstructed main band and the states gapped by the antiferromagnetic pseudogap around the hot spots. Within the antiferromagnetic pseudogap, we also observe gossamer states with distinct dispersion, from which coherence peaks of Bogoliubov quasiparticles emerge below the superconducting critical temperature. Moreover, the direct observation of a Bogoliubov quasiparticle permits an accurate determination of the superconducting gap, yielding a maximum value an order of magnitude smaller than the pseudogap, establishing the distinct nature of these two gaps. Here we propose that orientation fluctuations in the antiferromagnetic order parameter are responsible for the gossamer states.

Nuclear magnetic resonance investigation of superconducting and normal state Nb 3 Sn

The superconductor Nb3Sn has important applications for construction of very high-field superconducting magnets. In this work we investigate its microscopic electronic structure with 93 Nb nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The high-quality Nb 3 Sn powder sample was studied in both 3.2 T and 7 T magnetic fields in the temperature range from 4 K to 300 K. From measurement of the spectrum and its theoretical analysis, we find evidence for anisotropy despite its cubic crystal structure. Magnetic alignment of the powder grains in the superconducting state was also observed. The Knight shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate, T 1 -1 , were measured and the latter compared with BCS theory for the energy gap Δ(0) = 2.7 ± 0.3k B T c at 3.2 T and Δ(0) = 2.33 ± 0.07 k B T c at 7 T, indicating suppression of the order parameter by magnetic field.

Antiferromagnetic character of the quantum phase transition in the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice

In this work we provide a unified, comprehensive treatment of all operators that contribute to the antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic, and charge-density-wave structure factors and order parameters of the hexagonal Hubbard Model. We use the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm to perform a systematic, carefully controlled analysis in the temporal Trotter error and of the thermodynamic limit. We expect our findings to improve the consistency of Monte Carlo determinations of critical exponents. We perform a data collapse analysis and determine the critical exponent β = 0.898 (37) for the semimetal-Mott insulator transition in the hexagonal Hubbard Model. Our methods are applicable to a wide range of lattice theories of strongly correlated electrons.

Implications of second harmonic generation for hidden order in Sr 2 CuO 2 Cl 2

Sr 2 CuO 2 Cl 2 (SCOC) is a model undoped cuprate with I4/mmm crystallographic symmetry, and a simple magnetic space group CAmca with associated magnetic point group mmm1'. However, recent second harmonic spectroscopy in the antiferromagnetic phase has challenged this picture, suggesting instead a magnetic point group 4/mm'm' that coexists with the antiferromagnetism and breaks the two orthogonal mirror planes containing the tetragonal c axis. Here, we analyze the symmetry of SCOC in light of the second harmonic results, and discuss possible ground states that are consistent with the data.

$A$-type antiferromagnetic order and magnetic phase diagram of the trigonal Eu spin-$\frac{7}{2}$ triangular-lattice compound $\mathrm{EuSn_2As_2}$

The trigonal compound EuSn 2 As 2 was recently discovered to host Dirac surface states within the bulk band gap and orders antiferromagnetically below the N´eel temperature T N = 23.5(2) K from neutron-diffraction measurements. Here the magnetic ground state of single-crystal EuSn 2 As 2 and the evolution of its properties versus temperature T and applied magnetic field H are reported. Included are the zero-field single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements versus T, magnetization M(H, T), magnetic susceptibility χ(H, T) = M(H,T)/H, heat capacity C p (H, T), and electrical resistivity ρ(H, T) measurements. The neutron-diffraction and χ(T) measurements both indicate a collinear A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure below T N , where the Eu 2+ spins S = 7/2 in a triangular ab-plane layer (hexagonal unit cell) are aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane whereas the spins in adjacent Eu planes along the c axis are aligned antiferromagnetically. The χ(H ab , T) and χ(Hc, T) data together indicate a smooth crossover between the collinear AFM alignment and an unknown magnetic structure at H ≈ 0.12 T. Dynamic spin fluctuations up to 60 K are evident in the χ(T), Cp(T) and ρ(H, T) measurements, a temperature that is more than twice T N . The ρ(H, T) is consistent with a low-carrier-density metal with strong magnetic scattering and does not reflect a contribution of the topological state of the material as reported earlier by ARPES measurements. This observation is consistent with previous ones for other topological insulators where the chemical potential is above the Dirac point so that ARPES readily detects the surface states, whereas resistivity measurements do not. Finally, the magnetic phase diagrams for both H ∥ c and H ∥ ab in the H-T plane are constructed from the T N (H), χ(H, T), Cp(H, T), and ρ(H, T) data.

Temperature dependence of the accommodation coefficient of liquid-helium film.

We have determined the accommodation coefficient, gamma, of a helium film from 1.15 to 4 K by measuring the time constant of a rotating superconducting Nb sphere levitated in vapor and covered with a saturated helium film. The conventional assumption of the phenomenological theory of superfluidity, that the order parameter psi vanishes at the free surface of helium II, implies that gamma, is unity and independent of temperature. We find that gamma, is nearly unity above the lambda point, suffers an abrupt drop close to T-lambda, and gradually levels off to the value of about 0.8 at lower temperatures.

Exact Diagonalization for Magic-Angle Twisted Bilayer Graphene

We report on finite-size exact-diagonalization calculations in a Hilbert space defined by the continuum-model flat moiré bands of magic angle twisted bilayer graphene. For moiré band filling 3>|ν|>2, where superconductivity is strongest, we obtain evidence that the ground state is a spin ferromagnet. Near |ν|=3, we find Chern insulator ground states that have spontaneous spin, valley, and sublattice polarization, and demonstrate that the anisotropy energy in this order-parameter space is strongly band-filling-factor dependent. We emphasize that inclusion of the remote band self-energy is necessary for a reliable description of magic angle twisted bilayer graphene flat band correlations.

Axion strings are superconducting

We explore the cosmological consequences of the superconductivity of QCD axion strings. Axion strings can support a sizeable chiral electric current and charge density, which alters their early universe dynamics. We examine the possibility that shrinking axion string loops can become effectively stable remnants called vortons, supported by the repulsive electromagnetic force of the string current. We find that vortons in our scenario are generically unstable, and so do not pose a cosmological difficulty. Furthermore, if a primordial magnetic field (PMF) exists in the early universe, a large current is induced on axion strings, creating a significant drag force from interactions with the surrounding plasma. As a result, the strings are slowed down, which leads to an orders of magnitude enhancement in the number of strings per Hubble volume. Finally, we study potential implications for the QCD axion relic abundance. The QCD axion window is shifted by orders of magnitude in some parts of our parameter space.

Evidence for charge delocalization crossover in the quantum critical superconductor CeRhIn5

Abstract The nature of charge degrees-of-freedom distinguishes scenarios for interpreting the character of a second order magnetic transition at zero temperature, that is, a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP). Heavy-fermion systems are prototypes of this paradigm, and in those, the relevant question is where, relative to a magnetic QCP, does the Kondo effect delocalize their f -electron degrees-of-freedom. Herein, we use pressure-dependent Hall measurements to identify a finite-temperature scale E loc that signals a crossover from f -localized to f -delocalized character. As a function of pressure, E loc ( P ) extrapolates smoothly to zero temperature at the antiferromagnetic QCP of CeRhIn 5 where its Fermi surface reconstructs, hallmarks of Kondo-breakdown criticality that generates critical magnetic and charge fluctuations. In 4.4% Sn-doped CeRhIn 5 , however, E loc ( P ) extrapolates into its magnetically ordered phase and is decoupled from the pressure-induced magnetic QCP, which implies a spin-density-wave (SDW) type of criticality that produces only critical fluctuations of the SDW order parameter. Our results demonstrate the importance of experimentally determining E loc to characterize quantum criticality and the associated consequences for understanding the pairing mechanism of superconductivity that reaches a maximum T c in both materials at their respective magnetic QCP.

Quantum phase crossover in the spherical mean-field plus quadrupole–quadrupole and pairing model with two j-orbits

The shape phase crossover in the mean-field plus the geometric quadrupole–quadrupole and pairing model within two [Formula: see text]-orbits is analyzed, for which a simple description of [Formula: see text]Sn confined in the lowest [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] orbits above the [Formula: see text]Sn core is demonstrated to reveal the crossover behavior of the model. It is shown that [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] in this case may serve as effective order parameters for even–even and odd-A systems, respectively, from which the shape phase crossover from the rotation-like phase to the superconducting-like phase can be observed with variation of the number of valence neutrons.

Raman Response in the Nematic Phase of FeSe

Raman experiments on bulk FeSe revealed that the low-frequency part of the B 1g Raman response R B1 g (Ω), which probes nematic fluctuations, rapidly decreases below the nematic transition at T n ~ 85 K. Such behavior is expected when a gap opens up and at a first glance is inconsistent with the fact that FeSe remains a metal below Tn. We argue that the drop of R B1 g (Ω) can be ascribed to the fact that the nematic order drastically changes the orbital content of low-energy excitations near hole and electron pockets, making them nearly mono-orbital. In this situation, the B 1g Raman response gets reduced by the same vertex corrections that enforce charge conservation in the symmetric Raman channel. The reduction holds at low frequencies and gives rise to gaplike behavior of R B1 g (Ω). Here, we also show that the enhancement of the B 1g Raman response near T n is consistent with the sign change of the nematic order parameter between hole and electron pockets.

Possible unconventional pairing in ( Ca , Sr ) 3 ( Ir , Rh ) 4 Sn 13 superconductors revealed by controlling disorder

Here we study the evolution of temperature-dependent resistivity with added pointlike disorder induced by 2.5 MeV electron irradiation in stoichiometric compositions of the “3-4-13” stannides, (Ca,Sr) 3 (Ir,Rh) 4 Sn 13 . Three of these cubic compounds exhibit a proposed microscopic coexistence of charge density wave (CDW) order and superconductivity (SC), while Ca 3 Rh 4 Sn 13 does not develop CDW order. As expected, the CDW transition temperature T CDW is universally suppressed by irradiation in all three compositions. The superconducting transition temperature, T c , behaves in a more complex manner. In Sr 3 Rh 4 Sn 13 , it increases initially in a way consistent with a direct competition of CDW and SC, but quickly saturates at higher irradiation doses. In the other three compounds, T c is monotonically suppressed by irradiation. The strongest suppression is found in Ca 3 Rh 4 Sn 13 , which does not have CDW order. We further examine this composition by measuring the London penetration depth λ(T), from which we derive the superfluid density. The result unambiguously points to a weak-coupling, full single gap, isotropic superconducting state. Therefore we must explain two seemingly incompatible experimental observations: a single isotropic superconducting gap and a significant suppression of T c by nonmagnetic disorder. We conduct a quantitative theoretical analysis based on a generalized Anderson theorem which points to an unconventional multiband s +– -pairing state where the sign of the order parameter is different on one (or a small subset) of the smaller Fermi surface sheets but remains isotropic and overall fully gapped.
