Report of the 2021 U.S. Community Study on the Future of Particle Physics (Snowmass 2021) Summary Chapter

The 2021-22 High-Energy Physics Community Planning Exercise (a.k.a. ``Snowmass 2021'') was organized by the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society. Snowmass 2021 was a scientific study that provided an opportunity for the entire U.S. particle physics community, along with its international partners, to identify the most important scientific questions in High Energy Physics for the following decade, with an eye to the decade after that, and the experiments, facilities, infrastructure, and R&D needed to pursue them. This Snowmass summary report synthesizes the lessons learned and the main conclusions of the Community Planning Exercise as a whole and presents a community-informed synopsis of U.S. particle physics at the beginning of 2023. This document, along with the Snowmass reports from the various subfields, will provide input to the 2023 Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) subpanel of the U.S. High-Energy Physics Advisory Panel (HEPAP), and will help to guide and inform the activity of the U.S. particle physics community during the next decade and beyond.

Assessing the Performance of a Circular Economy for Wind Energy Technologies: A Summary of Three Analytical Tools

A circular economy emphasizes the efficient use of all resources and presents opportunities for addressing series of economic and environmental objectives at local, regional, and national levels. Despite anticipated overall benefits to society, the transition to a circular economy is likely to create regional differences in impacts. As a result, it is important to evaluate the performance and tradeoffs associated with circular economy transitions. This poster summaries three previously published analytical tools that were used to assess the performance of developing a circular economy for wind energy technologies: the Renewable Energy Materials Properties Database (REMPD), a circular economy agent-based model for wind blades (CE Wind ABM), and the Circular Economy Lifecycle Assessment and Visualization (CELAVI) framework. The REMPD is a comprehensive database of materials used in wind and solar plants, including material quantities and physical materials availability. The CE Wind ABM allows us to understand how wind stakeholders' end-of-life behaviors influence wind blade circularity and evaluate the impact of regional variables (e.g., logistics and transportation). And, the CELAVI framework is a modular framework that can be used to evaluate the impacts associated with circular economy transitions. These three analytical tools have been applied to evaluate circular economy transitions for wind energy technologies and they could be expanded to other technologies and products.

ANS Winter 2024 Summary: Optimizing the ATF-2Ramp Power Profile

When the Halden Boiling Water Reactor closed down in 2018, a need to restore the capability for in-reactor power ramp testing arose. Such testing is valuable for studying pellet-clad interaction phenomena in nuclear fuels. The data from these studies is of great interest to a number of research programs, including the accident-tolerant fuel (ATF) program at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). In 2022, Woolstenhulme et al. proposed several power ramp testing ideas using facilities at INL, including irradiation in the Transient Reactor Test Facility (better known as TREAT) and the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) [1]. Worrall et al. [2] and Labossiere-Hickman et al. [3] subsequently performed feasibility studies for the ATR testing options in 2023. This summary further investigates the three-pin trefoil design (Fig. 1) for the proposed ATF-2Ramp Experiment discussed in Labossiere-Hickman et al. [3]. ATF-2Ramp is designed to operate in the center flux trap (CFT) of the ATR during a powered axial locator mechanism (PALM) cycle: a short, variable-powered cycle with an asymmetric power distribution. Previously, it was shown that tailoring the thickness of the hafnium (Hf) neutron shields (“mini-shrouds”) surrounding each pin offered a degree of control sufficient to achieve the programmatic linear heat generation rate (LHGR) targets for ATF-2Ramp during the high-power period of a PALM cycle. New work involves shortening the experiment test train for consistency with the fuel pins in ATF-2D [4] and then shaping the axial power profile of the three test pins.

Presentation on the INL Remote-Handled Low-Level Waste Disposal Facility FY-2024 Annual Summary Report

The abstract below is from the report INL/RPT-24-82600. The powerpoint presentation contains information taken from the report. This Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 annual summary report (ASR) documents the continued adequacy of the performance assessment (PA), the composite analysis (CA), and associated operating disposal authorization statement (ODAS) technical basis documents for the Remote Handled Low Level Waste (RHLLW) Disposal Facility at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Annual review of the adequacy of the PA and CA for RHLLW Disposal Facility ensures that conclusions of the analyses remain valid in accordance with requirements of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Order 435.1, “Radioactive Waste Management.” In FY 2024, no significant operational changes or other activities occurred that would cause deviation from the assumptions in the PA and CA pertaining to disposal geometry, verification of waste characteristics, tracking disposal inventories against total limits, facility closure design, or institutional controls. Nineteen waste canister shipments were received at the RHLLW Disposal Facility, and all nineteen waste canisters were emplaced in disposal vaults.
