Evaluation of the suitability of Skylab data for the purpose of petroleum exploration

The author has identified the following significant results. Comparisons of the various photographic bands of Skylab imagery indicate that, overall, standard color (particularly S190B) is the most valuable for geological purposes. Detailed examination of all bands indicates that as with ERTS imagery each band contains useful information that is unique to it. The results of geological interpretations based on ERTS and Skylab imagery are strikingly similar. It appears that more information can be extracted from a single Skylab overpass than a single ERTS overpass, but that with repeated passes the lower resolution ERTS imagery may yield information comparable to that contained in S190B imagery. Comparison of Skylab photography to high altitude aircraft photography suggests that there are distinct advantages to using Skylab imagery for regional geologic interpretations. This is primarily because of the synoptic view provided by the space acquired imagery allows and encourages integration of regional geologic features.

A CCD image transducer and processor suitable for space flight

A satellite borne extreme ultraviolet solar telescope makes use of CCD area arrays for both image readout and onboard data processing. The instrument is designed to view the inner solar corona in the wavelength band 170 - 630 A, and the output video stream may be selected by ground command to present the coronal scene, or the time-rate-of-change of the scene. Details of the CCD application to onboard image processing are described, and a discussion of the processor's potential for telemetry bandwidth compression is included. Optical coupling methods, data storage requirements, spatial and temporal resolution, and nonsymmetry of resolution (pitch) in the CCD are discussed.

Fabrication and surface characterization of composite refractory compounds suitable for thermionic converters

Procedures for fabricating high purity single crystals of LaB6 and SmB6 have been developed. Auger spectroscopy shows that a clean surface can be obtained by thermal heating at 1700 K; such a clean surface gives a value of B/La of 2.3 to 2.6 for the (100) face. The measured thermionic and FERP work functions of the (100) face of LaB6 are 2.47 and 2.28 eV, respectively. The electron reflection coefficient for LaB6(100) increases near zero primary energy to 0.5. Flash thermal desorption of an oxygen dosed surface showed that B2O3 is the desorption product at 1600 to 1700 K. A work function increase of 1.6 eV was observed on oxygen adsorption on LaB6(100). Thermal desorption of Co occurs at approximately 1300 K. A reduction of the work function to 1.39 eV was observed on adsorption of a partial monolayer of Cs on LaB6(100). The evaporation of LaB6 occurs as atomic La and B with a value of B/La of 6 to 3 in the temperature range 1700 to 2000 K. The activation energies of desorption for La and B are 6.3 + or - 0.3 and 6.8 + or - 0.3 eV, respectively.

Aeroacoustic studies of coannular nozzles suitable for supersonic cruise aircraft applications

Research programs were conducted to investigate experimentally the aeroacoustic characteristics of scale model, inverted-velocity profile coannular nozzles. These programs include studies of unsuppressed configurations with and without center plugs over a variety of radius ratios and area ratios. Also included are suppressed configurations, the effect of ejectors, and some simulated flight effects. Unsuppressed inverted-velocity profile coannular nozzles seem to allow jet mixing noise compliance with present FAR-36 regulations when applied to supersonic cruise aircraft engine cycles. Simulated flight tests suggest that the aeroacoustic benefits of the inverted-velocity profile coannular nozzles would be maintained in flight.

Development of Surfaces Optically Suitable for Flat Solar Panels

Three areas of research in the development of flat solar panels are described. (1) A reflectometer which can separately evaluate the spectral and diffuse reflectivities of surfaces was developed. The reflectometer has a phase locked detection system. (2) A coating composed of strongly bound copper oxide that is formed by an etching process performed on an aluminum alloy with high copper content was also developed. Because of this one step fabrication process, fabrication costs are expected to be small. (3) A literature search was conducted and conclusions on the required optical properties of flat plate solar collectors are presented.

Measurement Techniques and Instruments Suitable for Life-prediction Testing of Photovoltaic Arrays

The validation of a 20-year service life for low-cost photovoltaic arrays is a critical requirement in the Low-Cost Solar Array (LSA) Project. The validation is accomplished through accelerated life-prediction tests. A two-phase study was conducted to address the needs before such tests are carried out. The results and recommended techniques from the Phase 1 investigation are summarized in the appendix. Phase 2 of the study is covered in this report and consisted of experimental evaluations of three techniques selected from these recommended as a results of the Phase 1 findings. The three techniques evaluated were specular and nonspecular optical reflectometry, chemiluminescence measurements, and electric current noise measurements.

Development of Surfaces Optically Suitable for Flat Solar Panels

A reflectometer which can separately evaluate the spectral and diffuse reflectivities of surfaces is described. A phase locked detection system for the reflectometer is also described. A selective coating on aluminum potentially useful for flat plate solar collector applications is presented. The coating is composed of strongly bound copper oxide (divalent) and is formed by an etching process performed on an aluminum alloy with high copper content. Fabrication costs are expected to be small due to the one stop fabrication process. A number of conclusions gathered from the literature as to the required optical properties of flat plate solar collectors are discussed.

A structure suitable for implementing digital filters with poles near z = +1

Errors limiting the application of recursive digital filters which have poles near z = +1 are considered, and a filter structure for pole locations close to z = +1 is proposed. The filter structure, based on digital incremental computers, has low sensitivity and good error characteristics for pole locations near z = +1. Expressions for the roundoff error are derived, and errors associated with the proposed structure and a conventional structure are compared. A design procedure is suggested for implementing the new filter structure when the transfer function is given. Simulation results are presented.

Determining potential 30/20 GHz domestic satellite system concepts and establishment of a suitable experimental configuration

Issues and results in a NASA study of the potential concepts and markets for a multibeam 30/20 GHz domestic satellite system in the 1990s are presented. Issues considered include the reduction of signal attenuation due to rain, beam-beam interference isolation in the multibeam system, the method of access/modulation (FDMA, TDMA or hybrid) and the market for reduced reliability and wideband services. A hypothetical demonstration payload configuration which would attempt to resolve these issues is illustrated. The communications payload would employ a system of seven contiguous coverage spots in order to demonstrate a typical cell in a contiguous beam system having extensive frequency re-use, as in a direct-to-user system, and a single spot, typical of a trunking system, to determine signal isolation. The payload could be carried on several existing buses and is illustrated on an MMS bus.

Fabrication and surface characterization of composite refractory compounds suitable for thermionic converters

The techniques of fabricating and characterizing the surface properties of electrode materials were investigated. The basic surface properties of these materials were studied with respect to their utilization as thermionic energy converter electrodes. Emphasis was placed on those factors (e.g, cesium disorption kinetic and mechanisms of low work function production) which are of primary concern to thermionic converter performance.

Nuclear isomer suitable for gamma ray laser

The operation of gamma ray lasers (gasers) are studied. It is assumed that the nuclear isomers mentioned in previously published papers have inherent limitations. It is further assumed that the judicious use of Bormann effect or the application of the total external reflection of low energy gamma radiation at grazing angle of incidence may permit the use of a gaser crystal sufficiently long to achieve observable stimulated emission. It is suggested that a long lived 0(+) isomer decaying by low energy gamma ray emission to a short lived 2(+) excited nuclear state would be an attractive gaser candidate. It is also suggested that the nuclear isomer be incorporated in a matrix of refractory material having an electrostatic field gradient whose principal axis lies along the length of the medium. This results in the preferential transmission of electric quadrupole radiation along the length of the medium.

The suitability of the ILLIAC IV architecture for image processing

The major architectural features of the ILLIAC IV large scale, array processor are summarized along with their applicability to image processing. Several image processing algorithms are considered, including multispectral classification, texture feature extraction, two-dimensional Fourier transform, and synthetic aperture radar processing. The basic parallelism of the ILLIAC IV (64 processing elements acting in lock-step) is usually fully utilized by the image processing applications. The major architectural aspect of the system with respect to image processing is the relatively small local scratch-pad memory and the long latency time to access the main storage device. The major precision used for the image processing applications is the 32-bit floating point, given a choice of 8-bit integers and 64-bit floating point.
