Doping directed at the oxygen sites in Y1Ba2Cu3O(7-delta) - The effect of sulfur, fluorine, and chlorine

The effect of three dopants directed at the oxygen sites in Y1Ba2Cu3O(7-delta) have been investigated: sulfur, fluorine, and chlorine. Single-phase material has been obtained up to a (nominal) replacement of about 1 percent of the oxygen. Although the lattice parameters are unchanged, all dopants raise Tc (very slightly), sharpen the resistive transition, reduce the normal state resistivity, and very substantially increase the (magnetically determined) fraction of the material that is superconducting. All of these results differ qualitatively from those obtained with dopants directed at other locations in the 123 structure, and it is suggested that small additions of sulfur, fluorine, or chlorine may help to stabilize the ideal 123 stoichiometry.

Effects of microstructure and nonstoichiometry on electrical properties of vanadium dioxide films

Voided growth structures of sputter-deposited films affect strongly their optical and electrical properties. Vanadium dioxide is an interesting material to study effects of film microstructure and nonstoichiometry on electrical properties because its phase transition makes it possible to investigate electrical behavior both in a semiconducting phase and in a metallic phase. Vanadium oxide films were deposited with different vanadium oxygen ratios for substrate temperatures between 250 and 550 C by dc reactive magnetron sputtering. The resistivity ratios between a semiconducting phase and a metallic phase are limited to 1000 order by voided boundaries and oxygen vacancies. The voided boundaries are defined by columnar structure and agglomerated grain growth. The results emphasize the necessity of a combination of deposition to obtain the film with a favorable structure and postdeposition annealing to control the film stoichiometry.

MBE growth technology for high quality strained III-V layers

The III-V films are grown on large automatically perfect terraces of III-V substrates which have a different lattice constant, with temperature and Group III and V arrival rates chosen to give a Group III element stable surface. The growth is pulsed to inhibit Group III metal accumulation of low temperature, and to permit the film to relax to equilibrium. The method of the invention: (1) minimizes starting step density on sample surface; (2) deposits InAs and GaAs using an interrupted growth mode (0.25 to 2 monolayers at a time); (3) maintains the instantaneous surface stoichiometry during growth (As-stable for GaAs, In-stable for InAs); and (4) uses time-resolved RHEED to achieve aspects (1) through (3).

Ignition and combustion characteristics of metallized propellants

Shakedown and calibration of the experimental apparatus designed to study secondary atomization and ignition characteristics of aluminum slurry propellants was begun and nears completion. The burner was tested over an array of equivalence ratios and oxygen mass fractions to determine the permissible range of operating conditions. A burner flow control system was designed and fabricated which permits independent control of flame stoichiometry and oxidant O2 concentrations. The Sun slurry formulation was selected as the base for initial testing. Laser beam waists at the focal volume of the single particle sizing system were determined to be 396 microns for the Ar-ion and 81 microns for the He-Ne laser. Size calibrations using pinholes were completed and compared to Mie theory for light scattering from particles. A vibrating office droplet generator was used to test the single particle sizing system dynamically by producing a water droplet laden gas flow. The data acquisition and analysis programming was completed and testing is in progress. From initial results, the particle sizing, atomization and ignition detection systems appear to be performing as expected.

Ternary and quaternary oxides of Bi, Sr, and Cu

Before the discovery of superconductivity in an oxide of Bi, Sr, and Cu, the system Bi-Sr-Cu-O had not been studied, although several solid phases had been identified in the two-component regions of the ternary system Bi2O3-SrO-CuO. The oxides Sr2CuO3, SrCu2O2, SrCuO2, and Bi2CuO4 were then well known and characterized, and the phase diagram of the binary system Bi2O3 -SrO had been established in the temperature range 620 to 1000 C. Besides nine solutions of compositions Bi(2-2x) Sr(x) O(3-2x) and different symmetries, this diagram includes three definite compounds of stoichiometries Bi(2)SrO4, Bi2Sr2O5, and Bi2Sr3O6 (x = 0.50, 0.67 and 0.75 respectively), only the second of which with known unit-cell of orthorhombic symmetry, dimensions (A) a = 14.293(2), b = 7.651(2), c = 6.172(1), and z = 4. The first superconducting oxide in the system Bi-Sr-Cu-O was initially formulated as Bi2Sr2Cu2O(7+x), with an orthorhombic unit-cell of parameters (A) a = 5.32, b = 26.6, c = 48.8. In a preliminary study the same oxide was formulated with half the copper content, Bi(2)Sr(2)CuO(6+x), and indexed its reflections assuming an orthorhombic unit-cell of dimensions (A) a = 5.390(2), b = 26.973(8), c = 24.69(4). Subsequent studies by diffraction techniques have confirmed the composition 2:2:1. A new family of oxygen-deficient perovskites, was characterized, after identifying by x ray diffraction the phases present in the products of thermal treatments of about 150 mixtures of analytical grade Bi2O3, Sr(OH)2-8H2O and CuO at different molar ratios. X ray diffraction data are presented for some other oxides of Bi and Sr, as well as for various quaternary oxides, among them an oxide of Bi, Sr, and Cu.

Study of local structure and magnetism in high-T(sub c) copper oxide superconductors

The muon spin rotation (MUSR) study of local magnetism of Sr-doped La2CuO4 is reviewed. Emphasis is placed on magnetic order as detected by local and bulk probes with local atomic environments studied by x ray absorption fine structure (XAFS). Correlations between the MUSR study of local magnetic ordering and the bulk magnetization study are presented along with a discussion of the dependence upon oxygen stoichiometry. Results are presented for both superconducting phases and magnetic phases. Recent data which reveals the existence of local magnetic ordering in the hydrogen-doped YBa2Cu3O7 system are also discussed.

Magnetism and superconductivity of some Tl-Cu oxides

Many copper oxide based Thallium compounds have now been discovered. In comparison to the Bi-compounds, the Tl-system shows a richer diversity; viz., High Temperature Superconductors (HTSC) can be obtained with either one or two Tl-0 layers (m = 1,2); also, the triple-digit phases are easier to synthesize. The value of d, oxygen stoichiometry, is critical to achieving superconductivity. The Tl system is robust to oxygen loss; Tl may be lost or incorporated by diffusion. A diffusion coefficient equal to 10 ms at 900 C was determined. Both ortho-rhombic and tetragonal structures are evidenced, but HTSC behavior is indifferent to the crystal symmetry. This system has the highest T(sub c) confirmed. T(sub c) generally increases with p, the number of CuO layers, but tends to saturate at p = 3. Zero resistance as high as 125K has been observed. Most of these HTSC's are hole type, but the Ce-doped specimens may be electronic. The magnetic aspects were studied; because in addition to defining the perfectly diamagnetic ground state as in the conventional superconductors, magnetism of the copper oxides show a surprising variety. This is true of both the normal and the superconducting states. Also, due to the large phonon contribution to the specific heat at the high T(sub c) accurate thermal measurement of important parameters such as the sp. heat jump, electronic density of states, D(Ef) and coherence length are uncertain, and thus, are estimated from the magnetic results. Results from the Tl-system CuO, LaBaCuO, 120 and the Bi-CuO compounds are discussed. The emphasis is on the role of magnetism in the TlCuO HTSC, but technological aspects are also pointed out.

Autoclavable addition polyimides for 371 C composite applications

Studies were conducted to improve the thermo-oxidative stability (TOS) of PMR type polyimides by the substitution of para-aminostyrene (PAS) for the nadic ester endcap in second generation PMR polyimides (PMR-2). The nadic endcap which provides the PMR polyimides with their relative ease of fabrication, both by limiting the molecular weight of the prepolymer and by undergoing the final addition cure without volatiles, is also the weak link with regard to TOS. A polyimide formulated with PAS endcaps, called V-CAP, utilizes a two step reaction sequence similar to that of the PMR polyimides and can be easily autoclave molded into low void composite materials. Resin studies included two formulations of both PMR-2 and V-CAP, corresponding to n=9 and n=14 prepolymer stoichiometry. Unidirectional reinforced T40R graphite fiber laminates were fabricated from each of the resins was post-cured in either air at 385 C or nitrogen at 400 C. Composite specimens were aged in air at 371 C and mechanical properties were measured at 371 C before and after exposure.

Synthesis and structural chemistry of Au(III)-substituted Ba2YCu3O(7-delta)

Gold-substituted superconductors, Ba2Y(Au(x)Cu(1-x))3O(7-delta) (x = 0-0.1) were synthesized. For x = 0.1, there was no change in the a and b lattice parameters (a = 3.826 A and b = 3.889 A) but a 0.06 A c axis expansion to 11.75 A was observed. Substituted gold is found to be trivalent by XPS. Replacing Cu(1) in the copper oxide chain with a slight reordering of oxygen is consistent with c axis expansion. The formal charge of the site remains trivalent; remaining Cu in the chains may be reduced resulting in an oxygen stoichiometry is less than or equal to 7. A small effect on T(sub c)(89 K for x = 0.10) is observed upon gold substitution.

Electron beam flash evaporation for YBaCuO and BiCaSrCuO thin films

An electron beam flash evaporation technique is described which reproduces the stoichiometry of superconducting YBa(2)Cu(3)O(x) (123), Bi(2)CaSr(2)Cu(2)O(y) (2122), and Bi(2)Ca(2)Sr(2)Cu(3)O(z) (2223) source powders. Films of each material deposited with this technique exhibit zero resistance temperatures of 78 K or above when furnace annealed; 75 K zero temperatures are obtained for 123 films in situ annealed with atomic oxygen at 775 C. Transport critical current densities are 10,000 A/sq cm in 25-micron stripes patterned from 123 films, and 60,000 A/sq cm in 1-mm stripes of 2122 and 2223 films using a 1-microV/mm measurement criteria. Typical normal state resistivities are 700 micro-ohm cm for 2122 and 2223 films and 5 micro-ohm cm for 123 films. The 2122 films are highly textured with the c axis normal to the substrate. All results are for films deposited on MgO.

Molten (Mg0.88Fe0.12)2SiO4 at lower mantle conditions - Melting products and structure of quenched glasses

Infrared spectra of quenched magnesium silicate glasses synthesized by fusing olivine at pressures in excess of 50 GPa and temperatures greater than 2500 K demonstrate that silicon is dominantly present in four-fold coordination with respect to oxygen within these quenched glasses. This low coordination is attributed, by analogy with the structural behavior of glasses compressed at 300 K, to the instability of higher coordinations in glasses of these compositions on decompression. Spectra of glasses formed in a hydrous environment document that water is extensively soluble in melts at these high pressures and temperatures. Also, these results are consistent with the melting of (Mg0.88Fe0.12)2SiO4 compositions to liquids near pyroxene in stoichiometry under these conditions, with iron-rich magnesiowuestite being the liquidus phase.

Columnar growth of CoSi2 on Si(111), Si(100) and Si(110) by molecular beam epitaxy

Codeposition of silicon and cobalt on heated silicon substrates in ratios several times the silicide stoichiometry is found to result in epitaxial columns of CoSi2 surrounded by a matrix of epitaxial silicon. For (111)-oriented wafers, nearly cylindrical columns are formed, where both columns and surrounding silicon are defect free, as deduced from transmission electron microscopy. Independent control of the column diameter and separation is possible, and diameters of 27-135 nm have been demonstrated.

Combustion interaction with radiation-cooled chambers

Over 15 hours of thruster operation at temperatures between 1916 and 2246 C without failure or erosion has been demonstrated using iridium-coated rhenium chamber materials with nitrogen tetroxide/monomethylhydrazine propellants operating over a mixture ratio range of 1.60-2.05. Research is now under way to provide a basic understanding of the mechanisms which make high-temperature operation possible and to extend the capability to a wider range of conditions, including other propellant combinations and chamber materials. Techniques have been demonstrated for studying surface fracture phenomena. These include surface Raman and Auger for study of oxide formation, surface Raman and X-ray diffraction to determine the oxide phase, Auger to study oxide stoichiometry, and sputter Auger to study interdiffusion of alloy species.

The growth of zinc selenide single crystals by physical vapor transport in microgravity

Growth and characterization studies will be performed on zinc selenide single crystals. The high temperature outgassing behavior of the silica ampoule material will be studied in order to develop a cleaning and bake-out procedure that will minimize the amount of impurities introduced into the vapor from the ampoule materials and in particular during the seal-off procedure. The outgassing behavior of the ZnSe starting material will be studied during high vacuum refinement at elevated temperatures in order to develop a temperature pressure program that will optimize the removal of impurities while minimizing a shift in stoichiometry due to preferred evaporation of the higher fugacity component. The mass spectrometer system was completed, and after calibration, will be used to perform the above tasks. The system and its operation is described in detail.

Ignition and combustion characteristics of metallized propellants

Research designed to develop detailed knowledge of the secondary atomization and ignition characteristics of aluminum slurry propellants was started. These processes are studied because they are the controlling factors limiting the combustion efficiency of aluminum slurry propellants in rocket applications. A burner and spray rig system allowing the study of individual slurry droplets having diameters from about 10 to 100 microns was designed and fabricated. The burner generates a near uniform high temperature environment from the merging of 72 small laminar diffusion flames above a honeycomb matrix. This design permits essentially adiabatic operation over a wide range of stoichiometries without danger of flashback. A single particle sizing system and velocimeter also were designed and assembled. Light scattered from a focused laser beam is related to the particle (droplet) size, while the particle velocity is determined by its transit time through the focal volume. Light from the combustion of aluminum is also sensed to determine if ignition was achieved. These size and velocity measurements will allow the determination of disruption and ignition times as functions of drop sizes and ambient conditions.

Effects of antimony substitution on bismuth based superconductors

The effect of Sb substitution and simultaneous substitution of Pb and Sb on the superconducting transition temperatures in the BiSrCaCuO system is investigated. The 2:2:2:3 phase is of particular interest since any small increase in the transition temperature could be of great interest. More that 90 different samples were prepared based on 2:2:2:3 stoichiometry in the BiSrCaCuO system. After this preliminary attempt, four different families of samples were investigated. In the first family of samples, Bi was substituted by Sb to form Bi(1.9)Sb(0.1)Sr2Ca2Cu3O(y). The second group of samples were prepared by simultaneous addition of Pb and Sb with nominal composition Bi(1.8)Pb(0.1)Sb(0.1)Sr2Ca2Cu3O(y). The third and fourth groups were prepared to determine the effect created when the Pb concentration is increased with the nominal compositions being Bi(1.7)Pb(0.1)Sr2Ca2Cu3O(y) and Bi(1.6)Sb(0.1)Sr2Ca2Cu3O(y). The results of these investigations are presented with a discussion.

Structure and properties during aging of an Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg alloy, Weldalite (tm) 049

An Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg alloy, Weldalite (trademark) 049, was recently introduced as an ultra-high strength alloy (7000 MPa yield strength in artificially aged tempers) with good weldability. In addition, the alloy exhibits an extraordinary natural aging response (440 MPa yield strength (YS) in the unstretch condition) and a high ductility reversion condition which may be useful as a cold-forming temper. In contrast to other Al-Li alloys, these properties can essentially be obtained with or without a stretch or other coldworking operation prior to aging. Preliminary studies have revealed that the T4 temper (no stretch, natural age) is strengthened by a combination of GP zones and delta prime (Al3Li). The T6 temper (no stretch, aged at 180 C to peak strength) was reported to be strengthened primarily by T(sub 1) phase (Al2CuLi) with a minor presence of a theta prime like (Al2Cu) phase. On the other hand, a similar but lower solute containing alloy was reported to contain omega, (stoichiometry unknown), theta prime, and S prime in the peak strength condition. The purpose of this study is to further elucidate the strengthening phases in Weldalite (trademark) 049 in the unstretched tempers, and to follow the development of the microstructure from the T4 temper through reversion (180 C for 5 to 45 minutes) to the T6 temper.

Ellipsometric study of metal samples

Exposed and unexposed (shielded) portions of the surfaces of six different metal samples (Al, Cu, Ni, Ta, W, and Zr) that had been mounted on LDEF were studied by variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry. The change in the optical constants of the metals caused by exposure to the space environment was measured. The measured optical constants reflect changes in the morphology and stoichiometry of a surface layer to a depth of this order of magnitude. For all the samples examined in this manner the exposed and unexposed portions exhibited dramatically different optical properties. In order to determine whether the observed changes were caused by the impact of oxygen atoms encountered in flight an experiment was set up in which samples identical to the original metal samples are exposed to a low-energy oxygen plasma in a microwave discharge chamber. Results of this experiment are reported, as well as an analysis of the observed data in terms of surface layers of different composition.
