Numerical analysis of gas exhaust in Wendelstein 7-X using the direct simulation Monte Carlo method

The present work is focused on a 3D numerical assessment of the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) particle exhaust. For all the numerical simulations the direct simulation Monte Carlo solver of the DIVGAS workflow, has been employed. The complex 3D geometry of the sub-divertor region includes the pumping gap panel, supporting structures, cooling pipes as well as the cryo-vacuum pump. All the considered flow simulations correspond to the Standard magnetic configuration of W7-X. The main conclusions, which can be extracted from the present numerical analysis could be summarized as follows; The coupling between EMC3-EIRENE and DIVGAS, which considers the fact that the incoming neutral particle flux at the sub-divertor is based on realistic plasma background, has been demonstrated. Three plasma scenarios have been considered, for which is clearly seen that by increasing the heating power, the neutral pressure as well as the resulting pumping efficiency is increased. The obtained numerical results of the neutral pressure in the sub-divertor lie within a more general scan matrix, which assumes a wider range of incoming particle flux, namely 10 19 –10 24 (s −1 ). It has been observed that, the sub-divertor neutral pressure is proportional to the incoming neutral particle flux, with the effective pumping speed to be a constant of proportionality. The influence of switching off the cryo-vacuum pump on the sub-divertor pressure is rather modest and a weak increase of the neutral pressure in the sub-divertor is expected. Correlations of the sub-divertor pressure with the total incoming particle flux as well as the individual pumped flux at each of the AEH and AEP sections have been deduced. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that the influence of the incoming neutral particle flux on the albedo coefficient at the AEH and AEP pumping gaps is rather weak. All the above numerical findings will actively support the optimization of the W7-X particle exhaust, in view of future experimental campaigns.

Study of the Alfven eigenmodes stability in CFQS plasma using a Landau closure model

The aim of this study is to analyze the stability of the Alfven eigenmodes (AE) in the Chinese First Quasi-axisymmetric Stellarator (CFQS). The AE stability is calculated using the code FAR3d that solves the reduced MHD equations to describe the linear evolution of the poloidal flux and the toroidal component of the vorticity in a full 3D system, coupled with equations of density and parallel velocity moment for the energetic particles (EP) species including the effect of the helical couplings and acoustic modes. The Landau damping and resonant destabilization effects are added in the model by a given closure relation. The simulation results indicate the destabilization of n = 1 to 4 AEs by EP during the slowing down process, particularly n = 1 and n = 2 toroidal AEs (TAE), n = 3 elliptical AE (EAE) and n = 4 non circular AE (NAE). If the resonance is caused by EPs with an energy above 17 keV (weakly thermalized EP), n = 2 EAEs and n = 3 NAEs are unstable. On the other hand, EPs with an energy below 17 keV (late thermalization stage) lead to the destabilization of n = 3 and n = 4 TAEs. The simulations for an off-axis NBI injection indicate the further destabilization of n = 2 to 4 AEs although the growth rate of the n = 1 AEs slightly decreases, so no clear optimization trend with respect to the NBI deposition region is identified. In addition, n = 2, 4 helical AE (HAE) are unstable above an EP β threshold. Also, if the thermal β of the simulation increases (higher thermal plasma density) the AE stability of the plasma improves. Overall, the simulations including the effect of the finite Larmor radius and electron-ion Landau damping show the stabilization of the n = 1 to 4 EAE/NAEs as well as a decrease of the growth rate and frequency of the n = 1 to 4 BAE/TAEs.

Skeletal Kinetics Reduction for Astrophysical Reaction Networks

A novel methodology is developed to extract accurate skeletal reaction models for nuclear combustion. Local sensitivities of isotope mass fractions with respect to reaction rates are modeled based on the forced optimally time-dependent (f-OTD) scheme. These sensitivities are then analyzed temporally to generate skeletal models. The methodology is demonstrated by conducting skeletal reduction of constant density and temperature burning of carbon and oxygen relevant to Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). The 495-isotopes Torch model is chosen as the detailed reaction network. A map of maximum production of 56 Ni in SNe Ia is produced for different temperatures, densities, and proton-to-neutron ratios. The f-OTD simulations and the sensitivity analyses are then performed with initial conditions from this map. A series of skeletal models are derived and their performances are assessed by comparison against currently existing skeletal models. Previous models have been constructed intuitively by assuming the dominance of α-chain reactions. The comparison of the newly generated skeletal models against previous models is based on the predicted energy release and 44 Ti and 56 Ni abundances by each model. The consequences of ye ≠ 0.5 in the initial composition are also explored where ye is the electron fraction. The simulated results show that 56 Ni production decreases by decreasing ye as expected, and that the 43 Sc is a key isotope in proton and neutron channels toward 56 Ni production. It is shown that an f-OTD skeletal model with 150 isotopes can accurately predict the 56Ni abundance in SNe Ia for ye ≲ 0.5 initial conditions.
