ATLAS Beam Steering Mechanism (BSM) Lessons Learned

This paper describes the design, testing, and lessons learned during the development of the Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS) Beam Steering Mechanism (BSM). The BSM is a 2 degree-of-freedom tip-tilt mechanism for the purpose of pointing a flat mirror to tightly control the co-alignment of the transmitted laser and the receiver telescope of the ATLAS instrument. The high resolution needs of the mission resulted in sub-arcsecond pointing and knowledge requirements, which have been met. Development of the methodology to verify performance required significant effort. The BSM will fly as part of the Ice, Cloud, and Elevation Satellite II Mission (ICESat II), which is scheduled to be launched in 2017. The ICESat II primary mission is to map the Earth's surface topography for the determination of seasonal changes of ice sheet thickness and vegetation canopy thickness to establish long-term trends.

Comparison of Curvilinear Stiffeners and Tow Steered Composites for Aeroelastic Tailoring of Transports

A series of aeroelastic optimization problems are solved on a high aspect ratio wingbox of the Common Research Model, in an effort to minimize structural mass under coupled stress, buckling, and flutter constraints. Two technologies are of particular interest: tow steered composite laminate skins and curvilinear stiffeners. Both methods are found to afford feasible reductions in mass over their non-curvilinear structural counterparts, through both distinct and shared mechanisms for passively controlling aeroelastic performance. Some degree of diminishing returns are seen when curvilinear stiffeners and curvilinear fiber tow paths are used simultaneously.

Fabrication of a Composite Tow-Steered Structure for Air-Launch Vehicle Applications

Generation Orbit (GO) is developing the GO Launcher-1 (GO-1), a single stage liquid rocket that is launched from a Gulfstream III carrier aircraft platform. The vehicle is designed as the next generation platform for hypersonic flight testing and suborbital microgravity research. To reduce mass and increase payload, GO partnered with NASA Langley Research Center to design, analyze, optimize, and fabricate a tow-steered manufacturing development unit of a cylindrical section of a liquid oxygen tank. The fabrication process of using the ISAAC (Integrated Structural Assembly of Advanced Composites) system is described. The structural design challenges and the concept design solutions are also presented to provide the context for the fabrication process. The in-situ nondestructive evaluation supporting the effort is also described.

Fast Steering Mirror Disturbance Effects on Overall System Optical Performance for the Large Ultraviolet/optical/infrared Surveyor (LUVOIR) Concept Using a Non-Contact Vibration Isolation and Precision Pointing System

As the optical performance requirements of space telescopes get more stringent, the need to analyze all possible error sources early in the mission design becomes critical. One large telescope with tight performance requirements is the Large Ultraviolet / Optical / Infrared Surveyor (LUVOIR) concept. The LUVOIR concept includes a 15-meter-diameter segmented-aperture telescope with a suite of serviceable instruments operating over a range of wavelengths between 100nm to 2.5um. Using an isolation architecture that involves no mechanical contact between the telescope and the host spacecraft structure allows for tighter performance metrics than current space-based telescopes being flown. Because of this separation, the spacecraft disturbances can be greatly reduced and disturbances on the telescope payload contribute more to the optical performance error. A portion of the optical performance error comes from the disturbances generated from the motion of the Fast Steering Mirror (FSM) on the payload. Characterizing the effects of this disturbance gives insight into the specifications on the FSM needed to achieve the tight optical performance requirements of the overall system. Through analysis of the LUVOIR finite element model and linear optical model given a range of input disturbances at the FSM, the optical performance of the telescope and recommendations for FSM specifications can be determined. The LUVOIR observatory control strategy consists of a multi-loop control architecture including the spacecraft Attitude Control System (ACS), Vibration Isolation and Precision Pointing System (VIPPS), and FSM. This paper focuses on the control loop containing the FSM disturbances and their effects on the telescope optical performance.

Continuous Spacecraft Communications via Make-Before-Break Antenna Array Beam Steering

Active phased array (APA) antennas can electronically form multiple beams to track several targets simultaneously. Spacecraft equipped with these antennas can achieve continuous communications through a constellation of relay satellites by forming a second beam to an upcoming relay satellite before the spacecraft moves beyond the current relay’s line of sight. These make-before-break operations have utility for streaming critical data without gaps. Using characterization data from a commercially-available APA-based satellite communications terminal, we simulate performance from low-Earth orbit to a representative geosynchronous relay satellite system at Ka-band. Average data rates of 3 Mbps are achievable with a minimum rate of 0.8 Mbps during worst-case handovers. We prototype the beam-splitting algorithm in the terminal hardware and evaluate its performance in an antenna range. In an over-the-air test emulating a handover between two relays we observe error-free data in the combined telemetry stream.

Digital techniques used in the steering apparatus of the GPO steerable aerial at Goonhilly Downs

A discription of the logic design for the digital control equipment is followed by further descriptions of items of particular interest. The means of applying off-sets to the demanded aerial position for over-coming possible inaccuracy of the predicted orbit; and to demand accuratly determined velocities manually; means of conversion from pure binary form to provide displays in terms of angles, and the derivation of analogue voltages for the for the servo-amplifiers are discussed in detail. A critical analysis of the equipment in the light of operational experience concludes the paper.
