Applications of truncated QR methods to sinusoidal frequency estimation

Three truncated QR methods are proposed for sinusoidal frequency estimation: (1) truncated QR without column pivoting (TQR), (2) truncated QR with preordered columns, and (3) truncated QR with column pivoting. It is demonstrated that the benefit of truncated SVD for high frequency resolution is achievable under the truncated QR approach with much lower computational cost. Other attractive features of the proposed methods include the ease of updating, which is difficult for the SVD method, and numerical stability. TQR methods thus offer efficient ways to identify sinusoidals closely clustered in frequencies under stationary and nonstationary conditions.

Stabilized pigment and method for producing the same

A chemical species, present in two oxidation states which differ from one another by one equivalent, is added to pigment materials to serve as a recombination center for alternately capturing electrons and holes produced by the pigment materials when they are subjected to ultraviolet light exposure.

DC/DC Converter Stability Testing Study

This report presents study results on hybrid DC/DC converter stability testing methods. An input impedance measurement method and a gain/phase margin measurement method were evaluated to be effective to determine front-end oscillation and feedback loop oscillation. In particular, certain channel power levels of converter input noises have been found to have high degree correlation with the gain/phase margins. It becomes a potential new method to evaluate stability levels of all type of DC/DC converters by utilizing the spectral analysis on converter input noises.

Combinatorial Multidomain Mesoporous Chips and a Method for Fractionation, Stabilization, and Storage of Biomolecules

A new fractionation device shows desirable features for exploratory screening and biomarker discovery. The constituent MSCs may be tailored for desired pore sizes and surface properties and for the sequestration and enrichment of extremely low abundant protein and peptides in desired ranges of the mass/charge spectrum. The MSCs are effective in yielding reproducible extracts from complex biological samples as small as 10 microliter in a time as short as 30 minutes. They are inexpensive to manufacture, and allow for scaled up production to attain the simultaneous processing of a large number of samples. The MSCs are multiplexed, label-free diagnostic tools with the potential of biological recognition moiety modification for enhanced specificity. The MSCs may store, protect and stabilize biological fluids, enabling the simplified and cost-effective collection and transportation of clinical samples. The MSC-based device may serve as a diagnostic tool to complement histopathology, imaging, and other conventional clinical techniques. The MSCs mediated identification of disease-specific protein signatures may help in the selection of personalized therapeutic combinations, in the real-time assessment of therapeutic efficacy and toxicity, and in the rational modulation of therapy based on the changes in the protein networks associated with the prognosis and the drug resistance of the disease.

CFD-Based Frequency Domain Method for Dynamic Stability Derivative Estimation with Application to Transonic Truss-Braced Wing

This paper presents a dynamic stability estimation technique obtained from high-fidelity CFD simulations of the Mach 0.8 Transonic Truss-Braced Wing (TTBW). A series of unsteady RANS CFD simulations in FUN3D is performed on the TTBW in pitch and plunge oscillations at various reduced frequencies. The time-domain data are transformed into the frequency-domain data by Fourier series. Transfer functions of the dynamic stability derivatives are then estimated by a frequency-domain regression. The dynamic stability derivatives with respect to the angle of attack are determined by the regression of the unsteady aerodynamic coefficients for the plunge motion. The dynamic stability derivatives with respect to the pitch rate are deter-mined by the regression of the differential unsteady aerodynamic coefficients for the pitch motion upon the removal of the angle of attack contribution by the plunge motion. The steady-state stability derivatives are then compared to the results obtained from a stability analysis code VSPAERO as well as steady-state FUN3D simulations. The comparison of the steady-state stability derivatives shows excellent agreement.

Systems and methods for improved stability of power systems

The embodiments described herein provide for a system including a processor. The processor is configured to select at least one grid system contingency from a plurality of grid system contingencies. The processor is further configured to derive one or more eigen-sensitivity values based on the at least on grid system contingency. The processor is also configured to derive one or more control actions at least partially based on the eigen-sensitivity values. The processor is additionally configured to apply the one or more control actions for generation re-dispatch of a grid system.

A proposed far-field method for frequency-stability measurements on the DSS 13 beam-waveguide antenna

A method for measuring the frequency stability of the beam-waveguide (BWG) antenna at Deep Space Station 13 is presented. This method is relatively inexpensive and primarily utilizes equipment that is already available. Another desirable feature of the method is that a far-field signal will be used for the measurement. In concert with the goal of employing new technology developments, a fiber optic system will be used at 12 GHz to carry a reference antenna signal to the BWG antenna Ku-band test-package location in the pedestal room.

Station stability measurement

Methods and instrumentation are being developed to determine the frequency stability of Deep Space Stations. The efforts are presently focused on the verification of the stability of the X-band uplink and other RF and microwave subsystems which contribute to the overall stability of the system. The measurement methodology is presented as well as frequency stability data generated with the development measurement system. The system characteristics are highlighted and the potential areas where improvements could be made are discussed.

A discrete analog of the extended Bass algorithm for stabilizing constant linear systems

Two methods for stabilizing constant linear systems, namely, the extended Bass algorithm for continuous systems and a discrete system analog, are discussed. For the continuous algorithm, a new result on the degree of stability of the closed-loop eigenvalues is presented, and for both methods, typical results and asymptotic trends in the data are illustrated through an example computation.

A review of high order strong stability preserving two-derivative explicit, implicit, and IMEX methods

High order strong stability preserving time discretizations ensure the nonlinear non-inner-product strong stability properties of spatial discretizations suited for the stable simulation of hyperbolic PDEs in a wide variety of application areas including fluid dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, semiconductor devices, electromagnetics, and astrophysics. Over the past decade multiderivative time-stepping have been increasingly used for the time-evolution hyperbolic PDEs, so that the strong stability properties of these methods have become important. In this work we review sufficient conditions for a two-derivative multistage method to preserve the strong stability properties of spatial discretizations in a forward Euler and different conditions on the second derivative. In particular we present the strong stability preserving theory for explicit and implicit two-derivative Runge–Kutta schemes, including a special condition on the second derivative under which these implicit methods may be unconditionally strong stability preserving. This special condition is natural for the stiff component of wide range of plasma physics problems, and can be useful in the context of strong stability preserving implicit-explicit multi-derivative Runge–Kutta schemes, where the time-step restriction is then independent of the stiff term. Lastly, we present the strong stability preserving theory for implicit-explicit multi-derivative general linear methods, and some novel second and third order methods where the time-step restriction is independent of the stiff term.

A method for predicting the stability in roll of automatically controlled aircraft based on the experimental determination of the characteristics of an automatic pilot

A method is suggested for predicting the stability of automatically controlled aircraft by a comparison of calculated frequency-response curves for the aircraft and experimentally determined frequency-response curves for the automatic pilot. The method is applied only to stabilization in roll. The method is expected to be useful as a means of establishing the specifications of the performance required of the automatic control device for pilotless aircraft designed as missiles.

Video image stabilization and registration--plus

A method of stabilizing a video image displayed in multiple video fields of a video sequence includes the steps of: subdividing a selected area of a first video field into nested pixel blocks; determining horizontal and vertical translation of each of the pixel blocks in each of the pixel block subdivision levels from the first video field to a second video field; and determining translation of the image from the first video field to the second video field by determining a change in magnification of the image from the first video field to the second video field in each of horizontal and vertical directions, and determining shear of the image from the first video field to the second video field in each of the horizontal and vertical directions.
