Design and development of solid state detector for SCADS

Solid state detector technology was applied to the fabrication and testing of cadmium sulfide and silicon narrow slit detector/preamplifier subassemblies. Fabrication of the silicon detector and the cadmium sulfide detectors was accomplished by utilizing cadmium sulfide cells and silicon cells. Fabrication of the preamplifiers for both silicon and cadmium sulfide slit type detectors was also carried out. The design of these preamplifiers was adjusted to ascertain that the limiting noise source of the detector/preamplifier subassembly is the detector and the input cable.

Calibration plan for ultraviolet spectrometer experiment S169

The calibration test equipment presented is employed to calibrate completely assembled and flight-ready Apollo Ultraviolet Spectrometers (UVS) consisting of a vacuum system in which the UVS can be installed. In it a premonochromator produces a monochromatic beam at any desired wavelength from a UV source. This beam can be focused by an adjustable transfer mirror to any point on the entrance slit of the UVS. The transfer mirror can also direct the beam to one or both of two absolutely calibrated reference photomultiplier tubes to determine the number of photons which enter the UVS. A movable mirror rhomb is also provided to intermittently monitor the number of photons in the beam when the beam is centered on the entrance slit.

Apparatus and method for skin packaging articles

A system for skin packaging articles including a loading zone for positioning articles to be packaged upon a substrate, a thermoplastic film heating and vacuum operated skin packaging zone for covering the articles with film laminated to the substrate and a slitting zone for separating and trimming the individual skin packaged articles. The articles are passed to the successive zones. The loading zone may be adapted for conveyorized instead of hand loading. In some cases, where only transverse cutting of the film web is necessary, it may be desirable to eliminate the slitting zone and remove the skin packaged article or articles directly from the packaging zone. A conveniently located operating panel contains controls for effecting automatic, semiautomatic or manual operation of the entire system of any portions in any manner desired.

Spectrometer

Ultraviolet spectrometer measures pure monochromatic wavelengths in predetermined narrow wave bands. Two stages are incorporated: stationary dispersed beam is intercepted by array of slits cut into plate at discrete wavelength locations; second stage is inverted spectrometer which recombines dispersed spectrum at single exit slit.

Evaluation of membrane filter field monitors for microbiological air sampling

Due to area constraints encountered in assembly and testing areas of spacecraft, the membrane filter field monitor (MF) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration-accepted Reyniers slit air sampler were compared for recovery of airborne microbial contamination. The intramural air in a microbiological laboratory area and a clean room environment used for the assembly and testing of the Apollo spacecraft was studied. A significantly higher number of microorganisms was recovered by the Reyniers sampler. A high degree of consistency between the two sampling methods was shown by a regression analysis, with a correlation coefficient of 0.93. The MF samplers detected 79% of the concentration measured by the Reyniers slit samplers. The types of microorganisms identified from both sampling methods were similar.

Ion and electron temperatures in the SUMMA mirror device by emission spectroscopy

Ion temperatures were obtained in the SUMMA mirror device by observing the Doppler-broadened charge-exchange component of the 667.8and 587.6-nm He lines in He plasma and the H alpha and H beta lines in H2 plasma. The second moment of the line profiles was used as the parameter to determine ion temperature. Corrections for magnetic splitting, fine structure, monochromator slit function, and variation in charge-exchange cross section with energy are derived and included. Even for constant cross section, no magnetic splitting or fine structure, and infinitely narrow slit function, the line profile is not Gaussian, because the excitation results from a change-exchange process. Comparison is made with temperatures from a neutral particle analyzer.-

Practical multi-spectrum Hadamard transform spectrometer

Specifications of a new Hadamard transform spectrometer for infrared astronomical applications are presented. The instrument has 15 entrance slits and 255 exit slits. Data can be gathered at the rate of up to five readings per second so that the entire spectral run lasts some thirteen minutes. The data is processed in real time by a minicomputer. At the end of the thirteen minute run the spectrum is available for immediate viewing on a CRT display. The spectra can be punched and stored on paper tape for later processing.

The emission-line spectrum above the limb of the quiet sun - 1175-1940 A

Spectra of a quiet solar region obtained at positions within and above the solar white-light limb in the wavelength region from 1175 to 1940 A are discussed. The spectra were obtained by the slit spectrograph (SO82-B) on Skylab. The spectral resolution is 0.06 A, and the projected slit area on the sun was 2 x 60 arcsec (1450 x 43500 km). Relative line intensities are presented for lines formed in the temperature region of the solar atmosphere from about 8000 to 220,000 K. Representative line profiles of both optically thin and optically thick lines are shown as a function of height above the limb. Random mass-motion velocities are deduced from the optically thin lines, and the relative intensities and profiles of the lines are discussed in terms of current theoretical models. A wavelength list with identifications is given for the spectrum obtained at +4 arcsec above the white-light limb.

The University of Colorado OSO-8 spectrometer experiment. I - Introduction and optical design considerations

The optical design of the high-resolution ultraviolet spectrometer prepared for the OSO-8 spacecraft is discussed. The instrument is a conventional 1 m Ebert-Fastie spectrometer fed by a Cassegrainian telescope. The instrument operates in the spectral range 1200-2000 A with spectral resolution of order 0.02 A. Spatial resolution is about 2.5 arcsec normal to the direction of the slit and is selectable from about 3 arcsec to 15 arcmin along the direction of the slit. Time resolution for the single spectrometer channel is selectable according to the needs of an individual observation and is limited to a maximum sampling rate of 40 ms per data point. The instrument is controlled by an internal general purpose computer.

The free shear layer edgetone and instability measurements

The hot-wire probe is known to be capable of triggering and sustaining upstream instability modes like the slit jet-wedge edgetone termed the free shear layer tone. In this paper, the hot-wire probe is used to investigate the shear tone phenomenon in axisymmetric and plane free shear layers. For all the measurements reported, the initial boundary layers producing the free shear layers are documented (at 0.2 cm upstream from the lip) and classified as laminar. It is shown that the free shear layer, inherently different from the fully vortical slit jet, produces a different tone behavior. The data on the free shear layer tone eigenfunctions and eigenvalues suggest that the feedback is hydrodynamic rather than acoustic.

The design of a multi-detector spectrometer for the infrared

A modified Ebert-Fastie spectrometer has been developed for atmospheric temperature sounding applications. The device is described with reference to its resolution, grating, focal-length mirror, mirror, equivalent f-number, and projected area of grating. The images of the entrance slit appear tilted backwards away from the concave mirror. Astigmatism and spherical aberration are reduced by asperizing the mirror. The resolution and f-number of the instrument are limited by the sagittal coma. The orientation and size of the exit slit are functions of wavelength.

EUV observations of quiescent prominences from Skylab

Measurements of line intensities and line widths for three quiescent prominences observed with Naval Research Laboratory slit spectrograph on ATM/Skylab are reported. The wavelengths of the observed lines cover the range 1175 A to 1960 A. The measured intensities have been calibrated to within approximately a factor 2 and are average intensities over a 2 arcsec by 60 arcsec slit. Nonthermal velocities from the measured line widths are derived. The nonthermal velocity is found to increase with temperature in the prominence transition zone. Electron densities and pressures are derived from density sensitive line ratios. Electron pressures for two of the prominences are found to lie in the range 0.04-0.08 dyn/sq cm, while values for the third and most intense and active of the three prominences are in the range 0.07-0.22 dyn/sq cm.

Photoelectric scanning /6.65-m/ spectrometer for VUV cross-section measurements

A 6.65-m normal incidence vacuum spectrograph has been provided with a photoelectric scanner that is easily interchangeable with the original plate holder. The scanner consists essentially of a photoelectric detector and an exit slit that scans mechanically along the focal surface while the grating and entrance slit remain stationary. The design and construction of the 6.65-m scanning spectrometer, which operates in the 120-300-nm wavelength region, are discussed. The wavelength resolution of 0.001 nm obtained photoelectrically is better than that of any existing vacuum monochromator. The performance of the instrument is illustrated with vacuum ultraviolet scans of the (1, 5) band of fourth positive system of CO in emission, and the (14, 0) band of the Schumann-Runge system of O2 in absorption.

Daylight spectra of individual lightning flashes in the 370-690 nm region

An optical multichannel analyzer slit spectrometer coupled to a minicomputer was used to record lightning spectra. This is the first successful application of a slit spectrometer to the study of individual lightning flashes and it was accomplished in the daytime. Over 300 spectra were obtained in 1978 and 1979 and are correlated with other experiments in the Thunderstorm Research International Program (TRIP). The spectra duplicate previously published nighttime data but reveal for the first time the relative intensity of H-alpha (656.3 nm) and H-beta (486.1 nm) emissions above their daytime absorption features. These are the characteristic Fraunhofer C and F lines in the solar spectrum. This result suggests that the observation of lightning from space may be accomplished by monitoring the hydrogen emissions from lightning which occur on earth, or on other planets with hydrogen in their atmospheres, such as Jupiter and Venus where lightning recently has been reported.

Fracture toughness of boron/aluminum laminates with various proportions of 0 deg and plus or minus 45 deg

The fracture toughness of boron/aluminum laminates was measured on sheet specimens containing central slits of various lengths that represent cracks. The specimens were loaded axially and had various widths. The sheets were made with five laminate orientation. Fracture toughness was calculated for each laminate orientation. Specimens began failing at the ends of the slit with what appeared to be tensile failures of fibers in the primary load carrying laminae. A general fracture toughness parameter independent of laminate orientation was derived on the basis of fiber failure in the principal load carrying laminae. The value of this parameter was proportional to the critical value of the stress intensity factor. The constant of proportionality depended only on the elastic constants of the laminates.

Results of basic improvements to the extraction of spectra from IUE images

Results of two methods of extracting spectra from IUE images are compared. The first method, which is presently implemented, performs a geometric correction of the image followed by a photometric correction. The spectral data are then extracted using a slit with an effective width and sampling interval of 2.4A for the SWP camera and 3.7A for the LWR camera in low dispersion. The second method performs the photometric correction without doing a geometric correction. The spectral data are then extracted from the photometrically corrected image by an extraction slit, which follows the spectral orders in the nongeometrically corrected space, with an effective width and sampling interval 1/2 that of the present method.

Solar rotation measurements at Mount Wilson. II - Systematic instrumental effects and the absolute rotation rate

Possible sources of systematic error in solar Doppler rotational velocities are examined. Scattered light is shown to affect the Mount Wilson solar rotation results, but this effect is not enough to bring the spectroscopic results in coincidence with the sunspot rotation. Interference fringes at the spectrograph focus at Mount Wilson have in two intervals affected the rotation results. It has been possible to correlate this error with temperature and thus correct for it. A misalignment between the entrance and exit slits is a possible source of error, but for the Mount Wilson slit configuration, the amplitude of this effect is negligibly small. Rapid scanning of the solar image also produces no measurable effect.

Diffraction by a finite strip

A new approach is presented to diffraction problems involving plane strip barriers or slit apertures. These are problems that display the effects of multiple interacting edges. The approach taken here provides exact, compact solutions. The theory is introduced through a series of examples that are, in fact, the 'standard' problems of the subject, diffraction of a plane oblique wave by a slit, for example. In each case, the solutions are found to depend explicitly on a single 'special' function and its Fourier transform. These fundamental functions are described, with the emphasis placed on practical computational methods. The example problems are all couched in the language of acoustics.
