Direct Air Capture-Compatible Azolate and Amino Acid Ionic Liquids for Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction to CO on a Silver Cathode

Direct air capture (DAC) compatible ionic liquids (ILs) are attractive for integrating CO 2 capture and conversion due to their high CO 2 solubility at low partial pressures, tunable chemisorption mechanisms, low volatility, and wide electrochemical windows. However, very few ILs have high CO 2 uptake at DAC conditions (420 ppm CO 2 ), and even fewer have been evaluated for chemical compatibility and mechanistic continuity for combined capture and electrochemical CO 2 reduction (eCO 2 RR). We demonstrate that two representative DAC-capable ILs, [P 4444 ][Val] (amino acid-based) and [P 66614 ][5-Me-Imd] (azolate-based), exhibit favorable electrochemical reduction behavior. CO and H 2 were the dominant gas-phase products by GC, while 1 H and 13 C NMR confirmed negligible liquid-phase HCOOH. Chronoamperometry at moderate applied potentials (−2.0 to −2.5 V vs Ag/AgCl) in a two-compartment H-cell with a Ag coated carbon paper as the working electrode yielded steady-state current densities of ∼10 mA cm −2 with CO FE of 96% for [P 4444 ][Val] and 95% for [P 66614 ][5-Me-Imd], highlighting the role of viscosity and chemically absorbed CO 2 -IL species to provide highly selective CO formation while suppressing H 2 evolution.

Silver-Loaded Xerogel Nanostructures for Iodine Capture: A Comparison of Thiolated versus Unthiolated Sorbents

Here this paper describes the development and provides comparisons of thiolated (-SH) and unthiolated Ag-Al-Si-O xerogels for iodine gas capture. These xerogels were produced from alkoxides and then heat-treated at 350 °C to provide mechanical strength for subsequent processing steps. Then, a portion of the xerogels was thiolated using (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane. Next, thiolated and unthiolated batches were ion-exchanged in AgNO 3 solutions where Ag + replaced Na + in the gel network on a near 1:1 molar basis. Subsamples of the Ag-exchanged xerogels were subjected to a reduction step in H 2 /Ar to convert Ag + to Ag 0 where the rest of the Ag-exchanged (Ag + ) were not reduced. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy revealed nanoscale Ag 0 in the Ag + samples despite no active reduction where actively reduced samples had bimodal Ag 0 distribution of ~2-3 nm hexagonal and ~6-7 nm cubic crystallites. Synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy was used to assess the oxidization states of Ag, S, and I within the different xerogel samples. The specific surface areas of the base xerogels decreased as subsequent treatments were performed on the as-made samples, albeit the decreases were smaller than aerogel equivalents of these samples from a previous study. All iodine-loaded Ag-based samples showed a mixture of β-AgI and γ-AgI. Comparisons of iodine-loading results with other Ag-based iodine sorbents show that the thiolated Ag 0 -xerogels in this work have one of the highest iodine-loading capacities (q e ) reported to date in saturated conditions with the thiolated Ag 0 -xerogel showing 522 mg iodine per g of the sorbent.

Hybrid Data‐Driven Discovery of High‐Performance Silver Selenide‐Based Thermoelectric Composites

Optimizing material compositions often enhances thermoelectric performances. However, the large selection of possible base elements and dopants results in a vast composition design space that is too large to systematically search using solely domain knowledge. To address this challenge, a hybrid data-driven strategy that integrates Bayesian optimization (BO) and Gaussian process regression (GPR) is proposed to optimize the composition of five elements (Ag, Se, S, Cu, and Te) in AgSe-based thermoelectric materials. Data is collected from the literature to provide prior knowledge for the initial GPR model, which is updated by actively collected experimental data during the iteration between BO and experiments. Within seven iterations, the optimized AgSe-based materials prepared using a simple high-throughput ink mixing and blade coating method deliver a high power factor of 2100 µW m −1 K −2 , which is a 75% improvement from the baseline composite (nominal composition of Ag 2 Se 1 ). In conclusion, the success of this study provides opportunities to generalize the demonstrated active machine learning technique to accelerate the development and optimization of a wide range of material systems with reduced experimental trials.

2‐Aminobenzenethiol‐Functionalized Silver‐Decorated Nanoporous Silicon Photoelectrodes for Selective CO 2 Reduction

Abstract A molecularly thin layer of 2‐aminobenzenethiol (2‐ABT) was adsorbed onto nanoporous p‐type silicon (b‐Si) photocathodes decorated with Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs). The addition of 2‐ABT alters the balance of the CO 2 reduction and hydrogen evolution reactions, resulting in more selective and efficient reduction of CO 2 to CO. The 2‐ABT adsorbate layer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and modeled by density functional theory calculations. Ex situ X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of the 2‐ABT modified electrodes suggests that surface Ag atoms are in the +1 oxidation state and coordinated to 2‐ABT via Ag−S bonds. Under visible light illumination, the onset potential for CO 2 reduction was −50 mV vs. RHE, an anodic shift of about 150 mV relative to a sample without 2‐ABT. The adsorption of 2‐ABT lowers the overpotentials for both CO 2 reduction and hydrogen evolution. A comparison of electrodes functionalized with different aromatic thiols and amines suggests that the primary role of the thiol group in 2‐ABT is to anchor the NH 2 group near the Ag surface, where it serves to bind CO 2 and also to assist in proton transfer.

Coordination of Anle138b to Silver Results in Selective Reduction of a C-terminal truncated Alpha-synuclein Protein and Increased Aggregate Size

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a prevalent age-related neurodegenerative syndrome, partially thought to be caused by a decrease in alpha-synuclein proteostasis. Anle138b = 5-(1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)-3-(3-bromophenyl)-1H-pyrazole (HL), is undergoing clinical trials as a promising mitigator of alpha-synuclein aggregation. Because complexation to metals is known to modulate the activity of several drugs, we have prepared and characterized: H2L(ClO4), [CuI(µ-L)]3, and [AgI(µ-L)]3. To better understand the bioviability of these compounds, we monitored their effects in a cell culture model of alpha-synuclein protein aggregation using human alpha-synuclein pre-formed fibrils (PFFs). Using two different anti-alpha-synuclein antibodies, our data suggests that [AgI(µ-L)]3 decreases a C-terminal truncated protein that is approximately 12.4 kDa, as well as increases the size and alters the shape of PFF-induced aggregates. This indicates that [AgI(µ-L)]3 impacts aggregation in a manner different from HL and may serve as a novel tool for studying C-terminal truncation related aggregation chemistry.

Silver-Mediated Squaric Acid Reduction as a Facile, Ambient-temperature and Seedless Route to Tunable Bimetallic Au/Ag Nanostars and Nanosnowflakes

In this work, bimetallic Au/Ag nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using a facile and reproducible method involving rapid, room temperature mixing of aqueous solutions of HAuCl 4 and AgNO 3 in the presence of squaric acid as both the reducing agent and surface capping ligand. Variation in the initial Au:Ag molar ratio yielded a tunable anisotropic shape and affiliated surface plasmon resonance. The nanoparticles displayed excellent stability in water for at least 10 weeks and showed robust catalytic activity in the borohydride-assisted reduction of the model substrate 4-nitrophenol.

Quantum Fluctuations and Lineshape Anomaly in a High‐ β Silver‐Coated InP‐Based Metallic Nanolaser

Abstract Metallic nanocavity lasers provide important technological advancement toward even smaller integrable light sources. They give access to widely unexplored lasing physics in which the distinction between different operational regimes, like those of thermal or coherent light emission, becomes increasingly challenging upon approaching a device with a near‐perfect spontaneous‐emission coupling factor . In fact, quantum‐optical studies have to be employed to reveal a transition to coherent emission in the intensity fluctuation behavior of nanolasers when the input–output characteristic appears thresholdless for nanolasers. Here, a new indicator for lasing operation in high‐ lasers is identified by showing that stimulated emission can give rise to a lineshape anomaly manifested as a transition from a Lorentzian to a Gaussian component in the emission linewidth that dominates the spectrum above the lasing threshold.
