Variational neural network approach to QFT in the field basis

We present a variational neural network approach for solving quantum field theories in the field basis, focusing on the free Klein-Gordon model formulated in momentum space. While recent studies have explored neural-network-based variational methods for scalar field theory in position space, a systematic benchmark of the analytically solvable Klein-Gordon ground state—particularly in the momentum-space field basis—has been lacking. In this work, we represent the ground-state wavefunctional as a neural network defined on a discretized set of field configurations and train it by minimizing the Hamiltonian expectation value. This framework enables direct comparison to exact analytic results for a range of key observables, including the ground-state energy, two-point correlators, expectation value of the field, and the structure of the learned wavefunctional itself. Our results provide quantitative diagnostics of accuracy and establish a validated foundation for extending neural-network wavefunctional methods to interacting field theories and position-space formulations.

Supergravity spectrum of AdS 5 black holes

We embed Kerr-Newman-AdS black holes into N = 8 gauged supergravity and study quadratic fluctuations around the black hole backgrounds of all fields in the larger theory. The equations of motion of the perturbations are partially diagonalized by the group theory of broken symmetry. Nearly all fields in theory have non-minimal couplings, so their equations of motion are not merely massive Klein-Gordon equations with minimal coupling to background gauge fields, and their analogues for fields with spin. In the special case of extremal black holes we identify specific modes of instability, some of which touch supersymmetric locus. For example, we identify scalar fields in supergravity that condense in the near horizon region and transition the black hole into a superconducting phase. We also identify supergravity modes that are susceptible to superradiant instability.

Higgs inflation, vacuum stability, and leptogenesis

We consider the introduction of a complex scalar field carrying a global lepton number charge to the Standard Model and the Higgs inflation framework. The conditions are investigated under which this model can simultaneously ensure Higgs vacuum stability up to the Planck scale, successful inflation, non-thermal Leptogenesis via the pendulum mechanism, and light neutrino masses. These can be simultaneously achieved when the scalar lepton is minimally coupled to gravity, that is, when standard Higgs inflation and reheating proceed without the interference of the additional scalar degrees of freedom. If the scalar lepton also has a non-minimal coupling to gravity, a multi-field inflation scenario is induced, with interesting interplay between the successful inflation constraints and those from vacuum stability and Leptogenesis. The parameter region that can simultaneously achieve the above goals is explored.

Accelerating cosmology from Λ < 0 gravitational effective field theory

A large class of Λ < 0 cosmologies have big-bang/big crunch spacetimes with time-symmetric backgrounds and asymptotically AdS Euclidean continuations suggesting a possible holographic realization. We argue that these models generically have time-dependent scalar fields, and these can lead to realistic cosmologies at the level of the homogeneous background geometry, with an accelerating phase prior to the turnaround and crunch. We first demonstrate via explicit effective field theory examples that models with an asymptotically AdS Euclidean continuation can also exhibit a period of accelerated expansion without fine tuning. We then show that certain significantly more tuned examples can give predictions arbitrarily close to a ΛCDM model. Finally, we demonstrate via an explicit construction that the potentials of interest can arise from a superpotential, thus suggesting that these solutions may be compatible with an underlying supersymmetric theory.

BTZ one-loop determinants via the Selberg zeta function for general spin

We relate the heat kernel and quasinormal mode methods of computing the 1-loop partition function of arbitrary spin fields on a rotating (Euclidean) BTZ background using the Selberg zeta function associated with H 3 /Z, extending (arXiv:1811.08433) [1]. Previously, Perry and Williams [2] showed for a scalar field that the zeros of the Selberg zeta function coincide with the poles of the associated scattering operator upon a relabeling of integers. We extend the integer relabeling to the case of general spin, and discuss its relationship to the removal of non-square-integrable Euclidean zero modes.

Excitations of elementary fermions in gauge Higgs theories

Static quark-antiquark states in QCD, at finite quark separation, have a spectrum of metastable states corresponding to string-like excitations of the gauge field. In this article I suggest that there may also exist an excitation spectrum of heavy fermions in some gauge Higgs theories deep in the Higgs phase. In this situation there are no color electric flux tubes connecting quarks with antiquarks. There may, nonetheless, exist stable excitations of the bosonic fields surrounding an isolated fermion, below the particle production threshold. I present numerical evidence indicating the existence of such excitations in an SU(3) gauge Higgs theory, with the scalar field in the fundamental representation of the gauge group.

Neutrino-assisted early dark energy: theory and cosmology

Abstract The tension between measurements of the Hubble constant obtained at different redshifts may provide a hint of new physics active in the relatively early universe, around the epoch of matter-radiation equality. A leading paradigm to resolve the tension is a period of early dark energy, in which a scalar field contributes a subdominant part of the energy budget of the universe at this time. This scenario faces significant fine-tuning problems which can be ameliorated by a non-trivial coupling of the scalar to the standard model neutrinos. These become non-relativistic close to the time of matter-radiation equality, resulting in an energy injection into the scalar that kick-starts the early dark energy phase, explaining its coincidence with this seemingly unrelated epoch. We present a minimal version of this neutrino-assisted early dark energy model, and perform a detailed analysis of its predictions and theoretical constraints. We consider both particle physics constraints — that the model constitute a well-behaved effective field theory for which the quantum corrections are under control, so that the relevant predictions are within its regime of validity — and the constraints provided by requiring a consistent cosmological evolution from early through to late times. Our work paves the way for testing this scenario using cosmological data sets.

Regulating loops in de Sitter spacetime

Perturbative quantum field theory (QFT) calculations in de Sitter space are riddled with contributions that diverge over time. These contributions often arise from loop integrals, which are notoriously hard to compute in de Sitter. We discuss an approach to evaluate loop integrals that contribute to equal-time correlators of a scalar field theory in a fixed de Sitter background. Our method is based on the Mellin-Barnes representation of correlation functions, which allows us to regulate loop divergences by adjusting the masses of the fields, or by gently deforming the underlying de Sitter spacetime. The resulting expressions have a similar structure as a standard answer from dimensional regularization in flat space QFT. These features of the regulator are illustrated with two examples, worked out in detail. Along the way, we illuminate the physical origin of these divergences and their interpretation with the machinery of the dynamical renormalization group. Our approach regulates the IR divergences of massless and massive particles in the same way. For massless scalars, the loop corrections can be incorporated as systematic improvements to the stochastic inflation framework, allowing for a more precise description of the IR dynamics of such fields in de Sitter. Local quenches, bulk entanglement entropy and a unitary Page curve

Quantum corrections to the entanglement entropy of matter fields interacting with dynamical gravity have proven to be very important in the study of the black hole information problem. We consider a one-particle excited state of a massive scalar field infalling in a pure AdS 3 geometry and compute these corrections for bulk subregions anchored on the AdS boundary. In the dual CFT 2 , the state is given by the insertion of a local primary operator and its evolution thereafter. We calculate the area and bulk entanglement entropy corrections at order $$ \mathcal{O}\left({N}^0\right), $$ O N 0 , both in AdS and its CFT dual. The two calculations match, thus providing a non-trivial check of the FLM formula in a dynamical setting. Further, we observe that the bulk entanglement entropy follows a Page curve. We explain the precise sense in which our setup can be interpreted as a simple model of black hole evaporation and comment on the implications for the information problem.

Opening the reheating box in multifield inflation

The robustness of multi-field inflation to the physics of reheating is investigated. In order to carry out this study, reheating is described in detail by means of a formalism which tracks the evolution of scalar fields and perfect fluids in interaction (the inflatons and their decay products). This framework is then used to establish the general equations of motion of the background and perturbative quantities controlling the evolution of the system during reheating. Next, these equations are solved exactly by means of a new numerical code. Moreover, new analytical techniques, allowing us to interpret and approximate these solutions, are developed. As an illustration of a physical prediction that could be affected by the micro-physics of reheating, the amplitude of non-adiabatic perturbations in double inflation is considered. It is found that ignoring the fine-structure of reheating, as usually done in the standard approach, can lead to differences as big as ~ 50%, while our semi-analytic estimates can reduce this error to ~ 10%. Finally, we conclude that, in multi-field inflation, tracking the perturbations through the details of the reheating process is important and, to achieve good precision, requires the use of numerical calculations.

Leveraging neural control variates for enhanced precision in lattice field theory

Results obtained with stochastic methods have an inherent uncertainty due to the finite number of samples that can be achieved in practice. In lattice QCD this problem is particularly salient in some observables like, for instance, observables involving one or more baryons and it is the main problem preventing the calculation of nuclear forces from first principles. The method of control variables has been used extensively in statistics and it amounts to computing the expectation value of the difference between the observable of interest and another observable whose average is known to be zero but is correlated with the observable of interest. Recently, control variates methods emerged as a promising solution in the context of lattice field theories. In our current study, instead of relying on an educated guess to determine the control variate, we utilize a neural network to parametrize this function. Using 1 + 1 dimensional scalar field theory as a testbed, we demonstrate that this neural network approach yields substantial improvements. Notably, our findings indicate that the neural network ansatz is particularly effective in the strong coupling regime. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Effective action approach for preheating

Abstract We present a semiclassical non-perturbative approach for calculating the preheating process at the end of inflation. Our method involves integrating out the decayed particles within the path integral framework and subsequently determining world-line instanton solutions in the effective action. This enables us to obtain the effective action of the inflaton, with its imaginary part linked to the phenomenon of particle creation driven by coherent inflaton field oscillations. Additionally, we utilize the Bogoliubov transformation to investigate the evolution of particle density within the medium after multiple inflaton oscillations. We apply our approach to various final state particles, including scalar fields, tachyonic fields, and gauge fields. The non-perturbative approach provides analytical results for preheating that are in accord with previous methods.

Entanglement structures in quantum field theories. II. Distortions of vacuum correlations through the lens of local observers

When observing a quantum field via detectors with access to only the mixed states of spatially separated, local regions—a ubiquitous experimental design—the capacity to access the full extent of distributed entanglement can be limited, shrouded by classical correlations. By performing projective measurements of the field external to two detection patches and classically communicating the results, underlying pure states may be identified for which entanglement quantification is clear. In the Gaussian continuous-variable states of the free scalar field vacuum, this protocol uncovers a disparity between the spacelike entanglement established within the field and that which is locally detectable. Further, this discrepancy is found to grow exponentially with the separation between observation regions. The protocol developed herein offers insight and practical guidance for clarifying the unavoidable distortion of quantum field correlations when viewed from the vantage of a pair of local observers.

Two-loop beta function for complex scalar electroweak multiplets

We present the general form of the renormalizable four-point interactions of a complex scalar field furnishing an irreducible representation of SU(2), and derive a set of algebraic identities that facilitates the calculation of higher-order radiative corrections. As an application, we calculate the two-loop beta function for the SM extended by a scalar multiplet, and provide the result explicitly in terms of the group invariants. Our results include the evolution of the Higgs-portal couplings, as well as scalar “minimal dark matter”. We present numerical results for the two-loop evolution of the various couplings.

Scalar-induced neutrinoless double beta decay in SU(5)

We discuss the role of heavy scalar fields in mediating neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) within the SU(5) Grand Unified Theory framework, extended suitably to include neutrino mass. In such a minimal realistic SU(5) setup for fermion masses, the scalar contributions to 0νββ are extremely suppressed as a consequence of the proton decay bound. We circumvent this problem by imposing a discrete Z 3 symmetry. However, the scalar contributions to 0νββ remain suppressed in this SU(5) x Z 3 model due to the neutrino mass constraint. We find that the 0νββ contribution can be enhanced by extending the scalar sector with an additional 15-dimensional scalar representation with suitable Z 3 charge. Such an extension not only yields realistic fermion mass spectra but also leads to experimentally testable predictions in upcoming ton-scale 0νββ searches, which can be used as a sensitive probe of the new scalars across a broad range, from LHC-accessible scales up to ∼ 10 10 GeV.

Topological analysis of X-ray CT data for the recognition and trending of subtle changes in microstructure under material aging

X-ray computed tomography (CT) is an established non-destructive tool for 3D imaging of multiphasic composites. Numerous applications of X-ray CT in medical diagnosis and materials characterization have been reported, many involving field-specific innovations in the imaging technology itself. Yet, quantitative summarization to link image features to properties of interest has been rare. Here we address this issue by employing state-of-the-art technics in scalar field topology for the summarization of X-ray CT images of an example biphasic system. By varying processing-parameters we create different microstructures, evolve them through accelerated thermal aging, CT-image them pre- and post-aged, and demonstrate the ability of our image summarization method to systematically track process- and age-related changes, which can often be very subtle. A novel aspect of the algorithm involves recognition over multiple resolution levels, which provides deeper insight into the pattern relationship between grain-like features and their neighbors. The method is general, adaptable to diverse image reconstruction methods and materials systems, and particularly useful in applications where practical constraints on the sample-size limits the reliable use of more complex models, e.g., convolutional neural networks.

Planck constraints and gravitational wave forecasts for primordial black hole dark matter seeded by multifield inflation

Here, we perform a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis of a simple yet generic multifield inflation model characterized by two scalar fields coupled to each other and nonminimally coupled to gravity, fit to Planck 2018 cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. In particular, model parameters are constrained by data on the amplitude of the primordial power spectrum of scalar curvature perturbations on CMB scales A s , the spectral index n s , and the ratio of power in tensor to scalar modes r, with a prior that the primordial power spectrum should also lead to primordial black hole (PBH) production sufficient to account for the observed dark matter abundance. We find that n s in particular controls the constraints on our model. Whereas previous studies of PBH formation from an ultraslow-roll phase of inflation have highlighted the need for at least one model parameter to be highly fine-tuned, we identify a degeneracy direction in parameter space such that shifts by ~10% of one parameter can be compensated by comparable shifts in other parameters while preserving a close fit between model predictions and observations. Furthermore, we find this allowed parameter region produces observable gravitational wave signals in the frequency ranges to which upcoming experiments are projected to be sensitive, including Advanced LIGO and Virgo, the Einstein Telescope, Cosmic Explorer, DECIGO, and LISA.

Lattice Observables for Parton Distributions

In recent years there has been a momentous surge of interest in the determination of the parton content of nucleons using lattice QCD. Scalar field theory is a convenient toy model to understand the relation between Euclidean correlators and Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs). In this talk we review the factorization formulae that allow the extraction of PDFs from the pseudo-PDFs and quasi-PDFs computed on the lattice. The scalar theory provides a simplified setting where the main physical properties are easily analysed.
