Method and device for a high temperature vacuum-safe solder resist utilizing laser ablation of solderable surfaces for an electronic module assembly

A process for manufacturing an electronic component having attaches includes providing a first component having a first attach, forming trenches on a portion of the first attach with a laser to form a solder stop, and providing a second component comprising a second attach. The process further includes providing solder between the first attach and the second attach to form a connection between the first component and the second component, where the trenches contain the solder to a usable area. A device produced by the process is disclosed as well.

How to Safely Build 100-plus Kilograms of Weapons-Grade Plutonium

The goal of the EUCLID (Experiments Underpinned by Computational Learning for Improvements in Nuclear Data) project was to reduce compensating errors by utilizing machine learning to both help determine which reactions contain compensating errors as well as optimizing an experiment which can be used to maximally reduce these errors. Compensating errors can adversely impact the predictive power of application simulations, and therefore it’s useful to further constrain nuclear data and reduce these errors. The EUCLID project included building two configurations at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC). These two configurations had very different geometries (one was cube-like and one was slab-like). Previous works focus on selection of the target experiment(s), radiation transport capabilities developed in the project, the experiment optimization, and the performance of the experiments. This work will focus only on the safety aspects of performing this experiment, which utilized over 100 kg of weapons-grade plutonium.

Large-mode-area optical fibers and optical fiber amplifiers in the eye-safe regime

The present technology provides large mode area optical fibers engineered to have normal dispersion around 1600 nm, enabling high power Raman amplification at eye safer wavelengths. The fibers can have a main core and one or more side cores disposed relative to the main core so that modes of the main core and the one or more side cores hybridize into supermodes with modified dispersion.
