Technical Report Series on Global Modeling and Data Assimilation: Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) Project Assessment Report for the Beta-Release L4_SM Data Product - Volume 40

During the post-launch SMAP calibration and validation (Cal/Val) phase there are two objectives for each science data product team: 1) calibrate, verify, and improve the performance of the science algorithm, and 2) validate the accuracy of the science data product as specified in the science requirements and according to the Cal/Val schedule. This report provides an assessment of the SMAP Level 4 Surface and Root Zone Soil Moisture Passive (L4_SM) product specifically for the product's public beta release scheduled for 30 October 2015. The primary objective of the beta release is to allow users to familiarize themselves with the data product before the validated product becomes available. The beta release also allows users to conduct their own assessment of the data and to provide feedback to the L4_SM science data product team. The assessment of the L4_SM data product includes comparisons of SMAP L4_SM soil moisture estimates with in situ soil moisture observations from core validation sites and sparse networks. The assessment further includes a global evaluation of the internal diagnostics from the ensemble-based data assimilation system that is used to generate the L4_SM product. This evaluation focuses on the statistics of the observation-minus-forecast (O-F) residuals and the analysis increments. Together, the core validation site comparisons and the statistics of the assimilation diagnostics are considered primary validation methodologies for the L4_SM product. Comparisons against in situ measurements from regional-scale sparse networks are considered a secondary validation methodology because such in situ measurements are subject to upscaling errors from the point-scale to the grid cell scale of the data product. Based on the limited set of core validation sites, the assessment presented here meets the criteria established by the Committee on Earth Observing Satellites for Stage 1 validation and supports the beta release of the data. The validation against sparse network measurements and the evaluation of the assimilation diagnostics address Stage 2 validation criteria by expanding the assessment to regional and global scales.

Stability and Control of Burning Tokamak Plasmas with Resistive Walls (Second Year Report/ Final Report)

This research will focus on quantitative prediction of the stability, control, and equilibrium state evolution in toroidal burning plasmas. The stability of long pulse burning plasmas is highly sensitive to the physics of resonant layers in the plasma, sources of momentum and ow, kinetic effects of energetic particles, and boundary conditions at the wall, including feedback control and error fields. In ITER in particular, the low toroidal ow equilibrium state, sustained primarily by energetic alpha particles from fusion reactions, will require the consideration of all of these key elements to predict quantitatively the stability and evolution. The principal investigators on this proposal are leading experts in the relevant theoretical and computational areas, and aim to perform computations guided by analytic modeling, to address this physics in realistic configurations. The overall goal is to understand the key physics mechanisms that describe resistive toroidal burning plasmas, surrounded by a resistive wall, under active feedback control. With the physics of the energetic ions, resonant layers, resistive wall, and toroidal momentum transport included, this study will extend from recent publications in theory and simulation of individual effects and move toward predictive modeling for burning plasmas.

Inspection Status Report of Site A/Plot M (Report for 2020)

The Site A/Plot M, Decommissioned Reactor Site was inspected on September 24, 2020. Site A/Plot M is located in the Palos Area Preserves, operated by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. The site was found to be in good condition with minimal erosional concerns across the grass covered mound at Plot M. Landscaping timbers installed along the footpath north of Plot M is effective in reducing erosion down the hill. Erosion concerns at Plot M are being addressed by Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). The bike trail installed by Cook County Forest Preserve to the east of Plot M has helped reduce traffic at the site. The Plot M monument appears solid with no visible cracks. The Site A monument has several cracks present that will possibly widen over time. No cause for a follow up inspection was identified.

Verification of Spent Fuel Inside Dry Storage Casks by Fast/Epi-thermal Neutron Mapping: FY2020 Annual Report to NA241 (Annual Report)

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has embarked upon development of a novel methodology for verification of spent fuel inside dry storage casks. The issue of verification of the integrity of spent fuel inside dry storage has been one of the most challenging technical problems facing IAEA for many decades. The difficulty arises because of the massive amount of shielding between the inner spent fuel and the outer surface where measurements can be performed. Despite many efforts, detection of useful gamma rays or neutrons from the outer surface has so far proven unsuccessful.

FY2020 Annual Report on Subcontract B631779 with UC Berkeley: Reactive Precursors Additive Manufacturing Report

This work succeeded in reaching each of the stated milestones for developing, printing, reacting, and characterizing the uranium carbide final products. Leveraging experience gained from creating magnesium oxide inks (milestone #1) and prior reactive precursor work with boron carbide (milestone #2) a uranium carbide reactive precursor ink was developed. The chosen composition of ink utilized a mixture of wax, petrolatum, and stearic acid as the binder. The reactive precursor portion of the ink was comprised of uranium oxide and nano particle activated carbon for production of uranium carbide via carbothermal reduction. Following an in-air burnout of the binder at 160C the printed samples were reacted and sintered at 1750C in an argon environment induction furnace. The resulting product has an open porosity dense, foam-like internal structure with a calculated density of 89% in the solid fraction.

Summer 2021 Co-op Report: X-Ray Scintillation Detector (A Co-op Work Experience Report)

The M-3 team was in need of a detector that could be used properly characterize their X-Ray machines. It can also be used to diagnose the X-ray in the case that problems arise before or during an experiment. They put me in charge of designing, ordering, and constructing said detector. After doing research, I found that scintillation-based detectors would be the best diagnostic tool for this purpose. It will allow the team to collect a full photon count of the X-ray pulse as well as provide spectroscopy functions with which we can view photon counts at different energy levels. This will also allow them to calculate an accurate dose given from the machine. Due to lead times, the crystals are still in manufacturing, thus the detector could not be completed. Although the designs and calculations needed to construct and operate the scintillator have been completed which is what I will be presenting in this document. Compared to the detectors being used before, my design offers a cheaper and far more efficient alternative.

Gear Test Assembly – Report Experimental Testing and Gear Analysis (FY2021 Midyear Report)

The Gear Test Assembly (GTA) has completed three experimental campaigns at the Mechanisms Engineering Test Loop (METL) facility. The most recent campaign tested Inconel 718 spur gears, tapered roller bearings of 52100 bearing steel with no heat treatment, and a lantern ring shaft seal with spring-loaded fasteners. Testing was performed in Test Vessel 1 (TV1) with 250°C sodium that had an oxide concentration of <10ppm. Testing began in February 2021 and was ended in March 2021 when a thrust bearing assembly failed, requiring shutdown and maintenance. The third experimental campaign completed 1,568 simulated fuel assembly maneuvers before the thrust bearing failure. The GTA was removed from TV1 and cleaned in the Carbonation System. The GTA is currently being prepared for the next experimental campaign. Nondestructive examination methods have been developed at Argonne to monitor the health of the GTA spur gears. Eddy current testing (ECT) and ultrasonic testing (UT) were performed prior to sodium testing and after each experimental campaign. The NDE has shown that the primary damage mechanism is mechanical wear on the gear tooth surface. Several larger nicks are observable on the gear faces, with additional large nicks present on the edges of the gear teeth. While this damage is observable, the overall health of the gears is adequate for more in-sodium testing. A total of 12,752 simulated fuel assembly maneuvers have been completed using this set of gears.
