IER-523: Feasibility of Experiments Focused on Measuring the Effects of UO 2 BeO Material on Critical Configurations using 7uPCX [Slides]

Sandia National Labs has access to unused ACRR fuel, which is unique in its enrichment 35% and material composition BeO. ACRR fuel is available in quantities well above what is needed for experiments. Two experiment concepts have been investigated: UO 2 BeO fuel elements and pellets with 7uPCX fuel. The worth of UO 2 BeO is large enough to be well above the anticipated experiment uncertainties.

Design of UO 2 -BeO Critical Experiment at Sandia [Poster]

The purpose of this proposal is to design a new integral critical experiment to investigate the effects of beryllium oxide and high assay low-enriched uranium fuels. this proposal considers using several existing resources at Sandia: (1) the Critical Experiments (SCX) facility and water tank, (2) spare UO 2 -BeO fuel for the Annular Core Research Reactor (ACRR), and 7uPCX fuel rods from previous benchmark experiments.

Integral Experiment Request 523 CED – 1 Report

This report documents the preliminary design phase of the Critical Experiment Design (CED-1) conducted as part of integral experiment request (IER) 523. The purpose of IER-523 is to determine critical configurations of 35 weight percent (wt%) enriched uranium dioxideberyllium oxide (UO 2 -BeO) material with Seven Percent Critical Experiment (7uPCX) fuels at Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia). Preliminary experiment design concepts, neutronic analysis results, and proposed paths for continuing the CED process are presented. This report builds on the feasibility and justification of experimental need report (CED-0) completed in December 2021.

Integral Experiment Request 523 CED-2 Report

This report documents the final design phase of the Critical Experiment Design (CED-2) conducted as part of integral experiment request (IER) 523. The purpose of IER 523 is to determine critical configurations of 35 weight percent (wt%) enriched uranium dioxide beryllium oxide (UO 2 -BeO) material driven by an annular ring of Seven Percent Critical Experiment (7uPCX) fuel rods at Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia). The experiments will provide benchmark data on water moderated, intermediately enriched UO2 systems as well as Be nuclear data. The experiment will also provide partial validation for the beryllium oxide (BeO) thermal neutron scattering law (TSL) in the thermal energy range. Experiment design concepts, neutronic analysis results, and proposed paths for continuing the CED process are presented. This report builds on the feasibility and justification of experimental need report (CED-0) and preliminary experiment design report (CED-1) completed in December 2021 and September 2023, respectively [1, 2].

BSEC VPRM 10m Hourly Biogenic Fluxes in Baltimore (2021)

Model outputs from the Vegetation Photosynthesis and Respiration Model (VPRM: version from Horne et al. in prep). Model remote sensing inputs come from Sential 2-derived EVI and LSWI. Model meteorological inputs for two-meter air temperature and shortwave incoming come from the BSEC WRF 2021 Control Run (Foust, W. 2023). Plant functional Types (PFTs) are spatially classified using the Chesapeake Bay Program 2018 land use land cover product. The final biogenic flux (µmol CO2 m^-2 s^-1) outputs of NEE, RESP, and GEE are a weighted average based on the portion of PFTs within the cell. Individual PFT outputs are saved inside PFT directories (e.g., Crops, Grass, etc.) inside the specific month directory. Model outputs are denoted as a negative flux into the land system (i.e., photosynthesis) and a positive flux as a net release into the overlying atmosphere. Respiration (RESP) fluxes are positive and combine heterotrophic (only soil) and autotrophic sources. Gross ecosystem exchange (GEE) is a negative flux driven by only photosynthetic activity from vegetation, and the Net ecosystem exchange (NEE) is the sum of the two (i.e., NEE=RESP+GEE). Data Characteristics Spatial Resolution: 10m Temporal Resolution: Hourly File Format: VPRM_ _BSEC. .tif (Hour is in UTC) For more information on the model results, please email Jason Horne (jph6488@psu.edu).
