Spin-1 Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice

We study the Kitaev-Heisenberg model with spin-1 local degree of freedom on a honeycomb lattice numerically by the infinite density matrix renormalization group method on a cylinder geometry. By tuning the relative value of the Kitaev and Heisenberg exchange couplings, we obtain the phase diagram with two spin liquid phases and four symmetry-broken phases. Here, we identify that the spin liquid phases are gapless by calculating the central charge at the pure Kitaev points without the Heisenberg interactions. Comparing to its spin-1/2 counterpart, the position and number of gapless modes of the spin-1 case are quite different. Due to the approximate Z 2 local conservations, the expectation value of the Wilson loop operator measuring the flux of each plaquette stays near to 1, and the static spin-spin correlations remain short range in the entire spin liquid phases.

Full-Scale Ab Initio Simulation of Magic-Angle-Spinning Dynamic Nuclear Polarization

Theoretical models aimed at describing magic-angle-spinning (MAS) dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) NMR have great potential in facilitating the in silico design of DNP polarizing agents and formulations. These models must typically face a trade-off between the accuracy of a strict quantum mechanical description and the need for using realistically large spin systems, for instance, using phenomenological models. In this paper, we show that the use of aggressive state-space restrictions and an optimization strategy allows full-scale ab initio MAS-DNP simulations of spin systems containing thousands of nuclei. Our simulations are shown to reproduce experimental DNP enhancements quantitatively, including their MAS rate dependence, for both frozen solutions and solid materials. They also reveal the importance of a previously unrecognized structural feature found in some polarizing agents that helps minimize the sensitivity losses imposed by the spin diffusion barrier.

Robustness and Eventual Slow Decay of Bound States of Interacting Microwave Photons in the Google Quantum AI Experiment

Integrable models are characterized by the existence of stable excitations that can propagate indefinitely without decaying. This includes multimagnon bound states in the celebrated 𝑋⁢𝑋⁢𝑍 spin-chain model and its integrable Floquet counterpart. A recent Google Quantum AI experiment [A. Morvan et al., Nature 612, 240 (2022)] realizing the Floquet model has demonstrated the persistence of such collective excitations even when the integrability is broken: this observation is at odds with the expectation of ergodic dynamics in generic nonintegrable systems. Here, we study the spectrum of the model realized in the experiment using exact diagonalization and physical arguments. We find that isolated bands corresponding to the descendants of the exact bound states of the integrable model are clearly observable in the spectrum for a large range of system sizes. However, our numerical analysis of the localization properties of the eigenstates suggests that the bound states become unstable in the thermodynamic limit. A perturbative estimate of the decay rate agrees with the prediction of an eventual instability for large system sizes.

Three-state harmonic models for photoinduced charge transfer

A widely used strategy for simulating the charge transfer between donor and acceptor electronic states in an all-atom anharmonic condensedphase system is based on invoking linear response theory to describe the system in terms of an effective spin-boson model Hamiltonian. Extending this strategy to photoinduced charge transfer processes requires also taking into consideration the ground electronic state in addition to the excited donor and acceptor electronic states. In this paper, we revisit the problem of describing such nonequilibrium processes in terms of an effective three-state harmonic model. We do so within the framework of nonequilibrium Fermi’s golden rule (NE-FGR) in the context of photoinduced charge transfer in the carotenoid–porphyrin–C 60 (CPC 60 ) molecular triad dissolved in explicit tetrahydrofuran (THF). To this end, we consider different ways for obtaining a three-state harmonic model from the equilibrium autocorrelation functions of the donor–acceptor, donor–ground, and acceptor–ground energy gaps, as obtained from all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of the CPC 60 /THF system. The quantum-mechanically exact time-dependent NE-FGR rate coefficients for two different charge transfer processes in two different triad conformations are then calculated using the effective three-state model Hamiltonians as well as a hierarchy of more approximate expressions that lead to the instantaneous Marcus theory limit. Our results show that the photoinduced charge transfer in CPC 60 /THF can be described accurately by the effective harmonic three-state models and that nuclear quantum effects are small in this system.

Giant Anisotropic Magnetoresistance in Few-Layer α-RuCl 3 Tunnel Junctions

The spin–orbit-assisted Mott insulator α-RuCl 3 is proximate to the coveted quantum spin liquid (QSL) predicted by the Kitaev model. In the search for the pure Kitaev QSL, reducing the dimensionality of this frustrated magnet by exfoliation has been proposed as a way to enhance magnetic fluctuations and Kitaev interactions. Here, in this work, we perform angle-dependent tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) measurements on ultrathin α-RuCl 3 crystals with various layer numbers to probe their magnetic, electronic, and crystal structures. We observe a giant change in resistance, as large as ~2500%, when the magnetic field rotates either within or out of the α-RuCl 3 plane, a manifestation of the strongly anisotropic spin interactions in this material. In combination with scanning transmission electron microscopy, this tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR) reveals that few-layer α-RuCl 3 crystals remain in the high-temperature monoclinic phase at low temperatures. It also shows the presence of a zigzag antiferromagnetic order below the critical temperature T N ≃ 14 K, which is twice the one typically observed in bulk samples with rhombohedral stacking. Our work offers valuable insights into the relation between the stacking order and magnetic properties of this material, which helps lay the groundwork for creating and electrically probing exotic magnetic phases such as QSLs via van der Waals engineering.

Proximate ferromagnetic state in the Kitaev model material α-RuCl 3

α-RuCl 3 is a major candidate for the realization of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, but its zigzag antiferromagnetic order at low temperatures indicates deviations from the Kitaev model. We have quantified the spin Hamiltonian of α-RuCl 3 by a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study at the Ru L 3 absorption edge. In the paramagnetic state, the quasi-elastic intensity of magnetic excitations has a broad maximum around the zone center without any local maxima at the zigzag magnetic Bragg wavevectors. This finding implies that the zigzag order is fragile and readily destabilized by competing ferromagnetic correlations. The classical ground state of the experimentally determined Hamiltonian is actually ferromagnetic. The zigzag state is stabilized by quantum fluctuations, leaving ferromagnetism – along with the Kitaev spin liquid – as energetically proximate metastable states. The three closely competing states and their collective excitations hold the key to the theoretical understanding of the unusual properties of α-RuCl 3 in magnetic fields.

Static and dynamical magnetic properties of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model with spin vacancies

Motivated by the potential to suppress antiferromagnetic long-range order in favor of the long-sought-after Kitaev quantum spin liquid state, we study the effect of spin vacancies in the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model. In particular, we focus on a realistic model obtained from fitting inelastic neutron scattering on α–RuCl 3 . We observe that the long-range zigzag magnetic ordered state only survives when the doping concentration is smaller than 5%. Upon further increasing the spin vacancy concentration, the ground state becomes a short-range ordered state at low temperatures. Compared with experiments, our classical solution overstabilizes the zigzag correlation in the presence of spin vacancies. Here, our theoretical results provide guidance toward interpreting inelastic neutron scattering experiments on magnetically diluted Kitaev candidate materials

Spin dynamics of the generalized quantum spin compass chain

Here we calculate the dynamical spin structure factor of the generalized spin-1/2 compass spin chain using the density matrix renormalization group. The model, also known as the twisted Kitaev spin chain, was recently proposed to be relevant for the description of the spin chain compound CoNb 2 O 6 . It features bond-dependent interactions and interpolates between an Ising chain and a one-dimensional variant of Kitaev's honeycomb spin model. The structure factor, in turn, is found to interpolate from gapped and nondispersive in the Ising limit to gapless with nontrivial continua in the Kitaev limit. In particular, the component of the structure factor perpendicular to the Ising directions changes abruptly at the Kitaev point into a dispersionless continuum due to the emergence of an extensive ground-state degeneracy. We show this continuum is consistent with analytical Jordan-Wigner results. We also discuss implications for future inelastic scattering experiments and applications to materials, particularly CoNb 2 O 6 .

Nonclassical Spin Transfer Effects in an Antiferromagnet

We simulate scattering of electrons by a chain of antiferromagnetically coupled quantum Heisenberg spins, to analyze spin-transfer effects not described by the classical models of magnetism. Our simulations demonstrate efficient excitation of dynamical states that would be forbidden by the semiclassical symmetries, such as generation of multiple magnetic excitation quanta by a single electron. Furthermore, quantum interference of spin wave functions enables generation of magnetization dynamics with amplitudes exceeding the transferred magnetic moment. Here, the efficiency of excitation is almost independent of the electron spin polarization, and is governed mainly by the transfer of energy. Nonclassical spin transfer may thus enable efficient electronic control of antiferromagnets not limited by the classical constraints.

Measurement and feedback-driven adaptive dynamics in the classical and quantum kicked top

In classical dynamical systems, stochastic feedback can stabilize otherwise unstable periodic orbits, giving rise to distinct controlled and uncontrolled phases as the rate of control application is varied. In this work, we apply these control protocols in classical, semiclassical, and quantum regimes to the kicked top, a paradigmatic model of quantum chaos. The quantum kicked top, modeled as the dynamics of a spin-S object, naturally interpolates between these regimes with the spin size S acting as an effective Planck constant. We show that the dynamics of the kicked top in classical, semiclassical, and fully quantum limits can all be controlled using stochastic feedback protocols. Comparing the full quantum dynamics to a truncated Wigner approximation that captures quantum noise but neglects interference beyond the Ehrenfest time, we find that low-moment observables are largely accounted for semiclassically, while the remaining discrepancy in higher moments is consistent with contributions from interference and possibly nonlinearities in rare trajectories that explore the compact phase space. We also find rapid purification in the numerics studied for all rates of control considered, suggesting that control quenches the top's ability to encode a qubit of quantum information even in the uncontrolled phase.

Dissipation-assisted steady-state entanglement engineering based on electron transfer models

Here, we propose a series of dissipation-assisted entanglement generation protocols that can be implemented on a trapped-ion quantum simulator. Our approach builds on the single-site molecular electron transfer (ET) model recently realized in experiment [So et al., Sci. Adv. 10, eads8011 (2024)]. This model leverages spin-dependent boson displacement and dissipation controlled by sympathetic cooling. We show that, when coupled to external degrees of freedom, the ET model can be used as a dissipative quantum control mechanism, enabling the precise tailoring of both spin and boson steady states of a target subsystem. We derive simplified analytical formalisms that offer intuitive insights into the dissipative dynamics. Using realistic interactions in a trapped-ion system, we develop a protocol for generating 𝑁-qubit and 𝑁-boson 𝑊 states. Additionally, we generalize this protocol to realize generic 𝑁-qubit Dicke states with tunable excitation numbers. Finally, we outline a realistic experimental setup to implement our schemes in the presence of noise sources.

CP2 skyrmions and skyrmion crystals in realistic quantum magnets

Abstract Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale topological textures that have been recently observed in different families of quantum magnets. These objects are called CP 1 skyrmions because they are built from dipoles—the target manifold is the 1D complex projective space, CP 1 ≅ S 2 . Here we report the emergence of magnetic CP 2 skyrmions in a realistic spin-1 model, which includes both dipole and quadrupole moments. Unlike CP 1 skyrmions, CP 2 skyrmions can also arise as metastable textures of quantum paramagnets, opening a new road to discover emergent topological solitons in non-magnetic materials. The quantum phase diagram of the spin-1 model also includes magnetic field-induced CP 2 skyrmion crystals that can be detected with regular momentum- (diffraction) and real-space (Lorentz transmission electron microscopy) experimental techniques.

Pseudospin versus magnetic dipole moment ordering in the isosceles triangular lattice material K 3 Er(VO 4 ) 2

Spin- 1 / 2 antiferromagnetic triangular lattice models are paradigms of geometrical frustration, revealing very different ground states and quantum effects depending on the nature of anisotropies in the model. Due to strong spin orbit coupling and crystal field effects, rare-earth ions can form pseudospin- 1 / 2 magnetic moments with anisotropic single-ion and exchange properties. Thus, rare-earth-based triangular lattices enable the exploration of this interplay between frustration and anisotropy. Here we study one such case, the rare-earth double vanadate glaserite material K 3 Er ( VO 4 ) 2 , which is a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) isosceles triangular antiferromagnet. Our specific heat and neutron powder diffraction data from K 3 Er ( VO 4 ) 2 reveal a transition to long range magnetic order at T N = 155 ± 5 mK which accounts for all R ln 2 entropy. Furthermore, we observe what appears to be a coexistence of three-dimensional (3D) and quasi-2D order below T N . The quasi-2D order leads to an anisotropic Warren-like peak profile for ( h k 0 ) reflections, while the 3D order is best-described by layers of antiferromagnetic b -aligned moments alternating with layers of zero moment. Our magnetic susceptibility data reveal that Er 3 + takes on a strong X Y single-ion anisotropy in K 3 Er ( VO 4 ) 2 , leading to vanishing moments when pseudospins are oriented along c . Thus, the magnetic structure, when considered from the pseudospin point of view could comprise of alternating layers of b -axis and c -axis aligned antiferromagnetism.

Quantum Algorithm for High Energy Physics Simulations

Simulating quantum field theories is a flagship application of quantum computing. However, calculating experimentally relevant high energy scattering amplitudes entirely on a quantum computer is prohibitively difficult. It is well known that such high energy scattering processes can be factored into pieces that can be computed using well established perturbative techniques, and pieces which currently have to be simulated using classical Markov chain algorithms. These classical Markov chain simulation approaches work well to capture many of the salient features, but cannot capture all quantum effects. To exploit quantum resources in the most efficient way, we introduce a new paradigm for quantum algorithms in field theories. This approach uses quantum computers only for those parts of the problem which are not computable using existing techniques. In particular, we develop a polynomial time quantum final state shower that accurately models the effects of intermediate spin states similar to those present in high energy electroweak showers with a global evolution variable. The algorithm is explicitly demonstrated for a simplified quantum field theory on a quantum computer.

Tunneling Spectroscopy of Quantum Spin Liquids

Here, we examine the spectroscopic signatures of tunneling through a Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) barrier in a number of experimentally relevant geometries. We combine contributions from elastic and inelastic tunneling processes and find that spin-flip scattering at the itinerant spinon modes gives rise to a gapped contribution to the tunneling conductance spectrum. We address the spectral modifications that arise in a magnetic field, which is applied to drive the candidate material α-RuCl 3 into a QSL phase, and we propose a lateral 1D tunnel junction as a viable setup in this regime. The characteristic spin gap is an unambiguous signature of the fractionalized QSL excitations, distinguishing it from magnons or phonons. We discuss the generalization of our results to a wide variety of QSLs with gapped and gapless spin correlators.

Replica symmetry breaking in spin glasses in the replica-free Keldysh formalism

We show that the algebra of Parisi ultrametric matrices is recovered by the real-time, replica-free, Dyson-Keldysh equations of infinite-range quantum spin glasses in the late time glassy limit. This connects to earlier results on classical and quantum systems showing how ultrametricity emerges from the persistent slow aging dynamics of the glass phase. The stationary spin glass state thereby spontaneously breaks thermal symmetry, or the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger relation of a state in global thermal equilibrium. We describe the Keldysh path integral of the infinite-range Ising model in transverse and longitudinal fields, and in the context of the Landau expansion of the action functional, show how the long-time limit connects to the full replica symmetry breaking obtained in the equilibrium formalism. We also illustrate our formalism by applying it to the spherical quantum p p -spin model, which only exhibits one-step replica symmetry breaking.

Precision study of the massive Schwinger model near quantum criticality

We perform a numerical analysis of the massive Schwinger model in the presence of a background electric field. Using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group approach, we efficiently compute the spectrum of the Schwinger model on a staggered lattice with up to 3000 qubits. As a result, we achieve a precise computation of the critical mass of the massive Schwinger model to five digits using four different “criticality criteria,” observing perfect agreement among them Additionally, we discuss the effect of a four-fermion operator deformation of the Schwinger model and compute the critical mass for various values of the deformation parameter.

A model of randomly-coupled Pauli spins

Abstract We construct a model of Pauli spin operators with all-to-all 4-local interactions by replacing Majorana fermions in the SYK model with spin operators. Equivalently, we replace fermions with hard-core bosons. We study this model numerically and compare the properties with those of the SYK model. We observe a striking quantitative coincidence between the spin model and the SYK model, which suggests that this spin model is strongly chaotic and, perhaps, can play some role in holography. We also discuss the path-integral approach with multi-local fields and the possibility of quantum simulations. This model may be an interesting target for quantum simulations because Pauli spins are easier to implement than fermions on qubit-based quantum devices.
