Spin Polarization from Circularly Polarized Light Induced Charge Transfer

Here, we show how a spin polarization can be generated through the photoinduced electron transfer of an achiral donor–acceptor complex following chiral light excitation. In particular, we illustrate the basic energetic and symmetry requirements for chirality induced spin selectivity where the chirality emerges from the electronic degrees of freedom following excitation with circularly polarized light. We study this effect in a simple model of a metalloporphyrin complex with an axial acceptor ligand using quantum mechanical rate theories and numerical simulations. We find that the spin polarization emerges due to the selective excitation of a ring current within the porphryin, breaking the degeneracy of the two degenerate spin states. The resultant spin polarization increases with the spin orbit coupling between the metal in the porphyrin and the axial ligand, and is transient, with a lifetime dependent on the rate of dephasing from the Jahn–Teller distortion mode. This proposed effect should be observable in spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.

Pore-Selective Fullerene Loading in a Porphyrin-Based Metal–Organic Framework Controls Photoinduced Charge-Transfer Dynamics

Building porous donor−acceptor networks based on host−guest interactions in metal organic frameworks (MOFs) provides unique opportunities for tuning charge separation in highly tailorable materials. Here we focus on installing electron-rich porphyrins and electron-deficient fullerene derivatives in the PCN-222 MOF using a solvent assisted ligand insertion (SALI) method. The fullerene is primarily bound in the large pore, where it is subject to distinct dielectric environments through dimethylformamide (DMF) and 1,4-dioxane solvent exchange. Following photoexcitation, sub-picosecond charge transfer involving initial exciplex population is observed, with different charge recombination pathways and lifetimes depending on solvent polarity through modulation of charge-transfer state energies. While the 1,4-dioxane environment yields charge recombination within 1 ns via local fullerene and porphyrin triplet state population, DMF results in charge recombination directly to the ground state on much longer time scales, including some lifetime components in the microsecond range. Fullerene loading influences these kinetics, and the potential for charge delocalization due to fullerene aggregation within the pores is evaluated by using molecular dynamics simulations.

A Synthetic Approach to β-Functionalized Naphtho[2,3]porphyrins

A concise synthetic method has been developed to access functionalized naphtho[2,3]porphyrins through combining two sequence reactions involving a Heck–electrocyclization–aromatization sequence and a Wittig–Knovenegal sequence. Using this method, mononaphtho[2,3]porphyrin (NP-1), opp-dinaphtho[2,3]porphyrin (NP-2), and push–pull naphtho[2,3]porphyrin (NP-3) have been prepared. These naphtho[2,3]porphyrins displayed interesting optical and electrochemical properties. As a result, excellent efficiencies of singlet oxygen generation were obtained for these naphtho[2,3]porphyrins.

In Situ Polymerization of Polypyrrole and Polyaniline on the Surface of Magnetic Molybdenum Trioxide Nanoparticles: Implications for Water Treatment

Photocatalyst dissolution greatly diminishes the usability of photocatalysts in water treatments. Coating conductive polymers on the surface of photocatalysts can reduce dissolution without compromising the photocatalytic properties of the material. In this investigation, polypyrrole (PPy) and polyaniline (PANI) were used to coat two magnetic MoO 3 nanoparticles with different surface chemistries. The polymer-coated MoO 3 @Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were synthesized by optimizing the mole fractions of PPy or PANI, MoO 3 , and Fe 3 O 4 . The optimized PPy@ MoO 3 @Fe 3 O 4 (PMF1) and PANI@MoO 3 @Fe 3 O 4 (PMF2) resulted in 95.39 and 75.98% methylene blue dye removal, respectively. MoO 3 dissolutions of 4.12 and 5.6% were obtained for PMF1 and PMF2, respectively, demonstrating the reduced solubility of the coated nanoparticles as compared to their uncoated counterparts (7.87% for MF1 and 18.1% for MF2). In situ small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) was utilized to investigate the polymerization kinetics of PPy and PANI on nanoparticles. The results revealed that an increase in base material oxygen vacancies resulted in the reduction of both the polymer size and the polymerization rate. Furthermore, this study demonstrated that SANS provides valuable insights into the polymer growth mechanisms on nanoparticle surfaces.

Effect of Support on Oxygen Reduction Reaction Activity of Supported Iron Porphyrins

In this work, we report the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity in acid of an Fe porphyrin on different supports. While the activity is high (E 1/2 = 0.34 V vs RHE with n = 3.8) when the Fe porphyrin is adsorbed on XC72 (a graphitic carbon), this activity is much lower when the porphyrin is adsorbed on either MoS 2 (E 1/2 = -0.15 V vs RHE with n = 2.2) or g-C 3 N 4 (E 1/2 = -0.24 V vs RHE with n = 3.1). Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), and magnetometry measurements show the electronic structure around the Fe center is the same for all three supports. Only the Fe porphyrin supported on XC72 exhibits a pH dependence in its ORR activity. This observation, coupled with the increased hydrophilicity of XC72 relative to the other supports, suggests that the support-electrolyte interaction controls the ORR activity. Modification of MoS 2 to increase its hydrophilicity results in a more active ORR catalyst.

Selective Electrocatalytic Reduction of Nitrous Oxide to Dinitrogen with an Iron Porphyrin Complex

Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) is the third largest contributor to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and plays a detrimental role in the depletion of ozone. Despite the contribution of N 2 O as an atmospheric pollutant, there are currently only a few examples of electrochemical N 2 O remediation to N 2 . Herein we report the electrocatalytic deoxygenation of N 2 O by iron tetraphenylporphyrin (FeTPP) to form N 2 with quantitative Faradaic efficiency and an observed rate of 1.91 s –1 . No degradation was observed after controlled potential electrolysis. Mechanistic investigation of the proposed catalytic steps determined that hydrogen-bond donors are critical for accelerating N 2 O activation and that proton transfer is involved in the rate-determining step.

Unsymmetric Pentacene- and Pentacenequinone-Fused Porphyrins: Understanding the Effect of Cross- and Linear-Conjugation

Unsymmetric pentacenequinone-fused (cross-conjugated) and pentacene-fused (linear-conjugated) porphyrins were designed and synthesized. The cross-conjugated (AM 1 –AM 3 ) and linear-conjugated (AM 5 –AM 7 ) porphyrins displayed strikingly different sets of optical and electronic properties, both of which are unusual and nontypical of porphyrins. MCD, DFT, and TDDFT calculations suggest that multiple charge transfer states exist in both π-conjugated systems, which contributes to the complex absorption and MCD spectra of these molecular systems. The general Gouterman’s four-orbital model used to explain porphyrin spectroscopy led to contradicting theoretical and experimental data, and is thus not applicable for these molecular systems. The “2 + 4” and “3 + 3” active spaces have been deduced and have proven effective to interpret the absorption and MCD spectra of the pentacenequinone-fused (cross-conjugated) and pentacene-fused (linear-conjugated) porphyrins, respectively. Spectroelectrochemistry of AM 5 –AM 7 revealed broad and intense IR absorptions in the range of 1500–2500 nm, illustrating the exceptional ability of these pentacene-fused systems to accommodate positive charges. A pronounced metal effect was observed for pentacene-fused porphyrins. While pentacene-fused Ni(II) porphyrin (AM 6 ) demonstrated an abnormal ability to stabilize pentacene with a half-life of >28.3 days, the half-life of the free base and Zn(II) counterparts were normal, similar to those of pentacene analogues. This work provides important and useful information on guiding new material designs.

π-Extended Porphyrin–Phthalocyanine Heterojunction Devices Exhibiting High Ammonia Sensitivity with a Remarkable Light Effect

π-Extended porphyrins represent an attractive class of organic compounds because of their unique photophysical, optoelectronic, and physicochemical properties. Herein, cross-conjugated (Ace-PQ-Ni) and linear-conjugated (AM6) porphyrins are used to build double-layer heterojunction devices by combining them with a lutetium bisphthalocyanine complex (LuPc 2 ). The heterojunction effect at the porphyrin–phthalocyanine interface plays a key role in the charge transport properties. Both devices exhibit exceptionally high ammonia sensitivity at room temperature and under ambient relative humidity, with limit of detection values of 156 and 115 ppb for Ace-PQ-Ni/LuPc 2 and AM6/LuPc 2 sensors, respectively. Interestingly, the Ace-PQ-Ni/LuPc 2 and AM6/LuPc 2 sensors display opposite effects upon light illumination. While the former sensors show largely decreased ammonia sensitivity under light illumination, the current variation of the latter under ammonia is remarkably enhanced with a multiplication factor of 13 and a limit of detection (LOD) of 83 ppb. Here, the striking difference in their sensing properties upon light illumination is attributed to their different π-conjugation pathways (cross-conjugation versus linear conjugation).

Spectral Addressability in a Modular Two Qubit System

The combination of structural precision and reproducibility of synthetic chemistry is perfectly suited for the creation of chemical qubits, the core units of a quantum information science (QIS) system. By exploiting the atomistic control inherent to synthetic chemistry, we address a fundamental question of how the spin–spin distance between two qubits impacts electronic spin coherence. To achieve this goal, in this study we designed a series of molecules featuring two spectrally distinct qubits, an early transition metal, Ti 3+ , and a late transition metal, Cu 2+ with increasing separation between the two metals. The spectral separation between the two metals enables us to probe each metal individually in the bimetallic species and compare it with monometallic control samples. Coherence times found to be governed by the distance to nuclear spins on the other qubit’s ligand framework. This finding offers guidance for the design of spectrally addressable molecular qubits.

Assembly and Evolution of Artificial Metalloenzymes within E. coli Nissle 1917 for Enantioselective and Site-Selective Functionalization of C–H and C=C Bonds

The potential applications afforded by the generation and reactivity of artificial metalloenzymes (ArMs) in microorganisms are vast. Here we show that a non-pathogenic E. coli strain, Nissle 1917 (EcN), is a suitable host for the creation of ArMs from cytochrome P450s and artificial heme cofactors. An outer-membrane receptor in EcN transports an iridium porphyrin into the cell, and the Ir-CYP119 (CYP119 containing iridium porphyrin) assembled in vivo catalyzes carbene insertions into benzylic C-H bonds enantioselectively and site-selectively. The application of EcN as a whole-cell screening platform eliminates the need for laborious processing procedures, drastically increases the ease and throughput of screening, and accelerates the development of Ir-CYP119 with improved catalytic properties. Studies to identify the transport machinery suggest that a transporter different from the previously assumed ChuA receptor serves to usher the iridium porphyrin into the cytoplasm.

Templating Bicarbonate in the Second Coordination Sphere Enhances Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction Catalyzed by Iron Porphyrins

Bicarbonate-based electrolytes are ubiquitous in aqueous electrochemical CO 2 reduction, particularly in heterogenous catalysis, where they demonstrate improved catalytic performance relative to other buffers. In contrast, the presence of bicarbonate in organic electrolytes and its roles in homogeneous electrocatalysis remain underexplored. Here, we investigate the influence of bicarbonate on iron porphyrin-catalyzed electrochemical CO 2 reduction. In this work, we show that bicarbonate is a viable proton donor in organic electrolyte (p K a = 20.8 in dimethyl sulfoxide) and that urea pendants in the second coordination sphere can be used to template bicarbonate in the vicinity of a molecular iron porphyrin catalyst. The templated binding of bicarbonate increases its acidity, resulting in a 1500-fold enhancement in catalytic rates relative to unmodified parent iron porphyrin. This work emphasizes the importance of bicarbonate speciation in wet organic electrolytes and establishes second-sphere bicarbonate templating as a design strategy to harness this adventitious acid and enhance CO 2 reduction catalysis.

A Manganese Compound I Model with a High Reactivity in the Oxidation of Organic Substrates and Water

In this work, a high-valent manganese(IV)-hydroxo porphyrin π-cation radical complex, [Mn(IV)(OH)(Porp +• )(X)] + , was synthesized and characterized spectroscopically. The Mn porphyrin intermediate was highly reactive in alkane hydroxylation and oxygen atom transfer reactions. More importantly, the Mn porphyrin intermediate reacted with water at a fast rate, resulting in the dioxygen evolution. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first manganese Cpd I model compound bearing a porphyrin π-cation radical ligand with a high reactivity in oxidation reactions, including water oxidation.
