Optimum TPS Design with Rei-mullite

It has been shown that a ceramic mullite fiber/mullite insulation has adequate margins-of-safety based on minimum strengths for the critical thermostructural conditions of the shuttle mission. Introduction into the design of the new lower density foam bond material provides cold soak and cold entry capability at 116 K (-250 F). Finally, design solutions to the coating cracking tendencies have been identified and the solution analytically verified with three dimensional thermostructural analysis.

Inclusion of explicit thermal requirements in optimum structural design

A finite-element based procedure is described for obtaining minimum mass designs of structures subjected to combined thermal and mechanical loading and both strength and thermal constraints. The procedure is based on a mathematical programming method using the Sequence of Unconstrained Minimizations Technique (SUMT) in which design requirements are incorporated by an exterior penalty function. The procedure is limited to steady-state temperatures which are controlled by structural sizing only. The optimization procedure is demonstrated by the design of a structural wing box with both mechanical loading and external heating, subject to design constraints on stress, minimum gage, and temperature. The final design for these conditions is compared with a corresponding design in which temperature constraints are omitted.

Optimum acoustic design of free-running low speed propellers

A theoretical analysis is conducted concerning the effect of blade loading on the noise output of a free-running propeller in axial motion. The minimization of the mean square sound pressure at a point in space is considered, taking into account constraints on propeller thrust and torque. Attention is given to aerodynamic equations, acoustic equations, the expansion of the aerodynamic variables, and the nonlinear programming formulation.

Influence of temperature change on optimum laminate design

Results of a laminate optimization study, which includes prescribed temperature change and mechanical loading conditions, are presented. Minimum-weight designs for balanced symmetric laminates are obtained subject to strength, membrane stiffness, and minimum thickness requirements, while including and omitting temperature change effects. Based on a first ply failure design philosophy and employing a linear thermoelastic analysis, it is shown that taking temperature decrease effects into account leads to substantial weight penalties in strength critical fiber composite laminates. Numerical results are presented for representative fiber composite materials based on three commonly used combined stress failure criteria.

The design of optimum remote-sensing instruments

Remote-sensing instruments allow values for certain properties of a target to be retrieved from measurements of radiation emitted, reflected or transmitted by the target. The retrieval accuracy is affected by random variations in the many target properties which affect the measurements. A method is described, by which statistical properties of the target and theoretical models of its electromagnetic behavior can be used to choose values for the instrument parameters which maximize the retrieval accuracy. The technique is applicable to a wide range of remote-sensing instruments.

Testing of gallium arsenide solar cells on the CRRES vehicle

A flight experiment was designed to determine the optimum design for gallium arsenide (GaAs) solar cell panels in a radiation environment. Elements of the experiment design include, different coverglass material and thicknesses, welded and soldered interconnects, different solar cell efficiencies, different solar cell types, and measurement of annealing properties. This experiment is scheduled to fly on the Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES). This satellite will simultaneously measure the radiation environment and provide engineering data on solar cell degradation that can be directly related to radiation damage.

Design concepts/parameters assessment and sensitivity analyses of select composite structural components

Formal approaches are summarized to evaluate design concepts and perform sensitivity analyses on design parameters of composite structural components for vehicles. The formal approaches include structural analyses coupled with composite micromechanics to assess the structural response of beams made from various intraply hybrids, finite element analysis in conjunction with composite mechanics to assess the structural response of panels made from strip hybrids, and sensitivity analysis through optimization to assess the effects of various design parameters on the optimum design of a panel made from angleplied composite laminates. Results obtained from these approaches are presented in graphical and tabular form to illustrate parametric studies and acceptable ranges of various design parameters.

Recent advances in approximation concepts for optimum structural design

The basic approximation concepts used in structural optimization are reviewed. Some of the most recent developments in that area since the introduction of the concept in the mid-seventies are discussed. The paper distinguishes between local, medium-range, and global approximations; it covers functions approximations and problem approximations. It shows that, although the lack of comparative data established on reference test cases prevents an accurate assessment, there have been significant improvements. The largest number of developments have been in the areas of local function approximations and use of intermediate variable and response quantities. It also appears that some new methodologies are emerging which could greatly benefit from the introduction of new computer architecture.

Optimum aerodynamic design via boundary control

These lectures describe the implementation of optimization techniques based on control theory for airfoil and wing design. In previous studies it was shown that control theory could be used to devise an effective optimization procedure for two-dimensional profiles in which the shape is determined by a conformal transformation from a unit circle, and the control is the mapping function. Recently the method has been implemented in an alternative formulation which does not depend on conformal mapping, so that it can more easily be extended to treat general configurations. The method has also been extended to treat the Euler equations, and results are presented for both two and three dimensional cases, including the optimization of a swept wing.

Optimum Shape Design Using Automatic Differentiation in Reverse Mode

This paper shows how to use automatic differentiation in reverse mode as a powerful tool in optimization procedures. It is also shown that for aerodynamic applications the gradients have to be as accurate as possible. In particular, the effect of having the exact gradient of he first or second order spatial discretization schemes is presented. We show that the loss of precision in the gradient affects not only the convergence, but also the final shape. Both two and three dimensional configurations of transonic and supersonic flows have been investigated. These cases involve up to several thousand control parameters.

Worst case estimation of homology design by convex analysis

The methodology of homology design is investigated for optimum design of advanced structures. for which the achievement of delicate tasks by the aid of active control system is demanded. The proposed formulation of homology design, based on the finite element sensitivity analysis, necessarily requires the specification of external loadings. The formulation to evaluate the worst case for homology design caused by uncertain fluctuation of loadings is presented by means of the convex model of uncertainty, in which uncertainty variables are assigned to discretized nodal forces and are confined within a conceivable convex hull given as a hyperellipse. The worst case of the distortion from objective homologous deformation is estimated by the Lagrange multiplier method searching the point to maximize the error index on the boundary of the convex hull. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated in a numerical example using the eleven-bar truss structure.

Computational optimization and wind tunnel test of transonic wing designs

A practical procedure for the optimum design of transonic wings is demonstrated. The procedure uses an optimization program based on the method of feasible directions coupled with an aerodynamic analysis program which solves the three-dimensional potential equation for subsonic through transonic flow. Two new wings for the A-7 aircraft were designed by using the optimization procedure to achieve specified surface pressure distributions. The new wings, along with the existing A-7 wing, were tested in the Ames 11-foot transonic wind tunnel. The experimental data show that all of the performance goals were met.

Preliminary analysis and design optimization of the short spacer truss of Space Station Freedom

The analysis, dynamic simulation, and design optimization of the short spacer truss of the Space Station Freedom are presented in this report. The short spacer truss will be positioned between the integrated equipment assembly (IEA) and another truss, called the long spacer truss, in the Space Station Freedom. During its launch in the Space Shuttle, the truss will be subjected to considerable in-span distributed inertia loads due to shuttle accelerations. The short spacer truss, therefore, has been modeled as a space frame to account for flexural response. Several parameters have been assumed, since the design specifications are in the process of development; hence the results presented should be considered preliminary. However, the automated analysis and design capabilities that have been developed can readily be used to generate an optimum design of the short spacer truss once the actual specifications have been determined. This report includes static and dynamic analyses of the short spacer truss, which have been obtained with the linear elastic code LE-HOST (in these analyses, LE-HOST data files have been automated to facilitate their future use for different design specifications of the short spacer truss); the dynamic animation of the short spacer truss, which has been carried out by using the results of the dynamic analysis and a post-processing feature of the modeling code PATRAN; and the optimum-weight design of the spacer truss, which was obtained under prescribed stress, displacement, and frequency constraints by using the design code COMETBOARDS. Examination of the analysis and design results revealed that the design could be improved if the configuration of the short spacer truss were modified to a certain extent. A modified configuration, which may simplify fabrication, has been suggested. The performance of this configuration has been evaluated and was found to be satisfactory under both static and dynamic conditions.
