Rotary shutter mechanism contains optical elements

Two cylindrical shutter mechanisms having fixed outer sleeves and rotating inner sleeves use single stepping motor and Geneva mechanism to sequentially move optical components into path of ultraviolet monochromator for output control to photomultiplier. Photometric and wavelength calibration sources insure shutter positions according to operational phases.

High-intensity source of extreme ultraviolet

High intensity ultraviolet radiation source was developed which is suitable for emission below 500 A. Source, useful for 100 to 1000 A range, is simple and inexpensive to construct, easy to operate, and very stable. Because of sufficiently intense output spectrum, source can be used with monochromator at wavelengths as low as 160 A.

Ultraviolet radiation effects on the infrared damage rate of a thermal control coating

The effects of ultraviolet radiation on the infrared reflectance of ZnO silicone white thermal coatings were investigated. Narrow band ultraviolet radiation for wavelengths in the 2200A to 3500A range by a monochromator and a high pressure, 150-W Eimac xenon lamp. The sample was irradiated while in a vacuum of at least 0.000001 torr, and infrared reflectance was measured in situ with a spectroreflectometer at 19,500A. Reflectance degradation was studied as a function of wavelength, time, intensity, and dose. Damage was wavelength dependent at constant exposure, but no maximum was evident above the shortest wavelength investigated here. The degradation rate at constant intensity was an exponential function of time and varies with intensity.

Optical radiation from regions downstream of mercury bombardment thrusters

A 0.5 meter focal length, plane grating monochromator was used to measure the radiance of spectral radiation emanating from regions downstream of a mercury bombardment thruster. The wavelength range investigated was 2800 A. This radiation was due primarily to the radiative decay of excited mercury atoms exhausted from the thruster. Radiance values ranged from 10 to the minus 11th power to 10 to the minus 9th power W/sq cm sr, varying with wavelength. For resonant radiation, the spectral radiance may exceed 10 to the minus 8th power W/sq cm sr. From such radiance measurements, it was concluded that the thruster background radiation should not interfere with the control functions of a star tracker viewing through the thruster exhaust, provided that the tracker is designed to operate with a sufficiently small field of view.

Ultraviolet atomic emission detector

A device and method are provided for performing qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis through the utilization of a vacuum UV chromatographic detector. The method involves the use of a carrier gas at low pressure. The gas carries a sample to a gas chromatograph column; the column output is directed to a microwave cavity. In this cavity, a low pressure microwave discharge produces fragmentation of the compounds present and generates intense atomic emissions in the vacuum ultraviolet. These emissions are isolated by a monochromator and measured by photometer to establish absolute concentration for the elements.

Calibration of radiation detectors in the ultraviolet region between 972 and 2500 A

The development of experimental setups and procedures is considered for calibrating photosensitive devices in the spectral range 1022 to 2500 A for which no direct calibration techniques exist. An indirect technique that uses a sodium salicylate detector calibrated outside this range was developed for use as a secondary standard. The primary standard was a xenon-filled ionization chamber, which is an absolute standard over the wavelength interval 972 to 1022 A. Measurements made by this method were checked at 1470 A with a xenon lamp and at 2537 A with a mercury arc lamp and a 0.5 m blaze monochromator with a grating blazed at 2000 A. The overall accuracy of the measurements was + or - 40 percent or better.
