Quaternary and quinary modifications of the eutectic superalloy gamma/gamma prime-delta

Quaternary modifications and quinary additions from the elements Co, Ti, Mo, W, Re, B, Si, and Ta to the baseline quaternary alloy gamma/gamma prime-delta Ni-19.7 at.% Nb-6.0 at.% Cr-2.5 at.% Al are examined for various concentrations. From modification studies five alloys were chosen for detailed mechanical property characterization: Ni-19.7 Nb-6.0 Cr-2.5 Al-1.0 W; Ni-19.7 Nb-6.0 Cr-2.5 Al-1.0 Mo; Ni-18.6 Nb-6.0 Cr-2.5 Al-0.87 Ti; Ni-20.2 Nb-6.0 Cr-2.5 Al-2.0 Co; and Ni-17.9 Nb-6.0 Cr-2.5 Al-3.0 Ta. It is shown that extensive alloying of the baseline quaternary alloy is possible for elements exhibiting a wide solubility range in both phases, and that limited substitution of W, Mo, Re, Si, and B is possible for elements with restricted solid solubility especially in the delta phase. Improvement of creep rupture strength and cyclic oxidation resistance at 1100 C is discussed.

Modelling switching-time effects in high-frequency power conditioning networks

Power transistor networks which switch large currents in highly inductive environments are beginning to find application in the hundred kilohertz switching frequency range. Recent developments in the fabrication of metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors in the power device category have enhanced the movement toward higher switching frequencies. Models for switching devices and of the circuits in which they are imbedded are required to properly characterize the mechanisms responsible for turning on and turning off effects. Easily interpreted results in the form of oscilloscope-like plots assist in understanding the effects of parametric studies using topology oriented computer-aided analysis methods.

Delamination crack growth in unidirectional fiber-reinforced composites under static and cyclic loading

An investigation of delamination crack growth in a unidirectional composite laminate under static and fatigue loading conditions is presented. An experimental program was conducted to study failure mechanisms and characterize the crack growth rate; analytical modeling based on microscopic observations was carried out using an advanced singular finite element method of the hybrid-stress model. Using a mixed-mode failure criterion, the delamination growth under a monotonically increasing load can be predicted; the rate of delamination crack propagation under fatigue loading is directly related to the amplitudes of cyclic opening and shearing mode stress intensity factors by a power law relationship.

Test methods and design allowables for fibrous composites; Proceedings of the Symposium, Dearborn, MI, October 2, 3, 1979

Papers are presented on special test methods for fibrous composites for quantifying design material properties. Studies are divided into four major areas: (1) new and special test methods, including those for transverse tensile strength, shear modulus, longitudinal compression, and impact resistance; (2) special test methods and analysis, including off-axes and angle-plied tension and compression, fracture and fatigue, and biaxial stress states; (3) design allowables, describing procedures for setting and selecting design allowables in general, and also for composite aircraft structures, graphite/polyimide bolted joints, cost-effective mechanical property characterization, statistical considerations, intraply hybrids, and compression and fatigue; (4) design allowables for special applications, describing procedures for buckling of cylindrical components, proof load of pressure vessels, strength of composite joints, and environmental effects and creep. The papers provide considerable information for test methods and for composite analysis of these methods, as well as tests and procedures for establishing design allowables.

A study of the stress wave factor technique for the characterization of composite materials

A testing program was undertaken to provide an independent investigation and evaluation of the stress wave factor for characterizing the mechanical behavior of composite laminates. Some of the data which was obtained after performing a very large number of tests to determine the reproducibility of the SWF measurement is presented. It was determined that, with some optimizing of experimental parameters, the SWF value can be reproduced to within + or - 10%. Results are also given which show that, after careful calibration procedures, the lowest SWF value along the length of a specimen will correlate very closely to the site of final failure when the specimen is loaded in tension. Finally, using a moire interferometry technique, it was found that local regions having the highest in plane strains under tensile loading also had the lowest SWF values.

Low-cost single-crystal turbine blades, volume 1

The exothermic casting process was successfully developed into a low cost nonproprietary method for producing single crystal (SC) castings. Casting yields were lower than expected, on the order of 20 percent, but it is felt that the casting yield could be significantly improved with minor modifications to the process. Single crystal Mar-M 247 and two derivative SC alloys were developed. NASAIR 100 and SC Alloy 3 were fully characterized through mechanical property testing. SC Mar-M 247 shows no significant improvement in strength over directionally solidified (DS) Mar-M 247, but the derivative alloys, NASAIR 100 and Alloy 3, show significant tensile and fatigue improvements. The 1000 hr/238 MPa (20 ksi) stress rupture capability compared to DS Mar-M 247 was improved over 28 C. Firtree testing, holography, and strain gauge rig testing were used to evaluate the effects of the anisotropic characteristics of single crystal materials. In general, the single crystal material behaved similarly to DS Mar-M 247. Two complete engine sets of SC HP turbine blades were cast using the exothermic casting process and fully machined.

Material characterization of superplastically formed titanium (Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo) sheet

The aerospace industry has focused considerable interest on the near-alpha titanium alloy Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo (Ti-6242) because of both its high-temperature properties and its superplastic forming (SPF) capabilities. This paper describes current research to characterize selected mechanical properties of Ti-6242 sheet in the SPF-strained condition, both with and without heat treatment, and compares the results with those obtained on as-received material. Tensile and creep tests were conducted, and metallographic analysis was performed to show the effect of 100 to 700 percent SPF strain on titanium properties. Analysis shows that as a result of SPF processing, both tensile and yield strengths, as well as elongation, are moderately reduced. Creep tests at 800 F and 1000 F show that the SPF processed material displays superior creep resistance compared with the as-received material. A post-SPF duplex-anneal heat treatment had no beneficial effect on tensile and creep properties.

Modeling the viscoplastic behavior of Inconel 718 at 1200 F

A large number of tests, including tensile, creep, fatigue, and creep-fatigue were performed to characterize the mechanical properties of Inconel 718 (a nickel based superalloy) at 1200 F, the operating temperature for turbine blades. In addition, a few attempts were made to model the behavior of Inconel 718 at 1200 F using viscoplastic theories. The Chaboche theory of viscoplasticity can model a wide variety of mechanical behavior, including monotonic, sustained, and cyclic responses of homogeneous, initially-isotropic, strain hardening (or softening) materials. It is shown how the Chaboche theory can be used to model the viscoplastic behavior of Inconel 718 at 1200 F. First, an algorithm was developed to systematically determine the material parameters of the Chaboche theory from uniaxial tensile, creep, and cyclic data. The algorithm is general and can be used in conjunction with similar high temperature materials. A sensitivity study was then performed and an optimal set of Chaboche's parameters were obtained. This study has also indicated the role of each parameter in modeling the response to different loading conditions.

Testing and analysis of photovoltaic modules for electrochemical corrosion

This paper describes the testing and evaluation used to characterize the mechanisms of electrochemical corrosion of photovoltaic modules - encapsulated solar cells. Accelerated exposure testing was performed on a sample matrix of cell/encapsulant combinations, and microanalytical failure analysis was performed on selected samples to confirm the correlation between the accelerated test data and the life prediction model. A quantitative correlation between field exposure time and exposure time in the accelerated multistress tests was obtained based upon the observation that equal quantities of interelectrode charge transfer resulted in equivalent degrees of electrochemical charge.

Thermomechanical properties of polymeric materials and related stresses

The thermomechanical analysis (TMA) and dynamic mechanical analysis characterizations of a polymeric material yield useful data relating to the thermomechanical stresses of eight widely used polymeric materials. The materials encompass Lexan, Plexiglass, Epon, Conap, Uralane, Solithane, and Humiseal. A combined profile of the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and the modulus change over a wide temperature range obtained by these analytical methods indicates the drastic effects of glass transition on both the CTE and the modulus of a polymer. TMA can also detect secondary transitions, and provides a convenient means for the study of a polymer's toughness.

Effects of heat treatment on carbon fibers

Commercially produced carbon fibers were heat treated to graphitization temperatures. The fibers were characterized for mechanical and physical properties, including density, D0002 spacing, strength, and modulus in both the 'as received' and heat treated conditions. Mechanical property changes were correlated with the physical property changes in the fibers.

Assessment of internal contamination problems associated with bioregenerative air/water purification systems

The emphasis is to characterize the mechanisms of bioregenerative revitalization of air and water as well as to assess the possible risks associated with such a system in a closed environment. Marsh and aquatic plants are utilized for purposes of wastewater treatment as well as possible desalinization and demineralization. Foliage plants are also being screened for their ability to remove toxic organics from ambient air. Preliminary test results indicate that treated wastewater is typically of potable quality with numbers of pathogens such as Salmonella and Shigella significantly reduced by the artificial marsh system. Microbiological analyses of ambient air indicate the presence of bacilli as well as thermophilic actinomycetes.

Uses of Auger and x ray photoelectron spectroscopy in the study of adhesion and friction

Three studies are described characterizing the possible contributions of surface science to tribology. These include surface contamination formed by the interaction of a surface with the environment, contaminants obtained with diffusion of compounds, and surface chemical changes resulting from selective thermal evaporation. Surface analytical tools such as Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and x ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) incorporated directly into adhesion and friction systems are primarily used to define the nature of tribological surfaces before and after tribological experimentation and to characterize the mechanism of solid-to-solid interaction. Emphasis is on fundamental studies involving the role of surfaces in controlling the adhesion and friction properties of materials emerging as a result of the surface analyses. The materials which were studied include metals and ceramics such as elemental metals, amorphous alloys (metallic glasses), and silicon-based ceramics.

Low-density, high-strength intermetallic matrix composites by XD (trademark) synthesis

A feasibility study was conducted to evaluate the potential of particulate composites based on low-density, L1(sub 2) trialuminide matrices for high-temperature applications. The compounds evaluated included Al22Fe3Ti8 (as a multiphase matrix), Al67Ti25Cr8, and Al66Ti25Mn9. The reinforcement consisted of TiB2 particulates. The TiB2 composites were processed by ingot and powder metallurgy techniques. Microstructural characterization and mechanical testing were performed in the hot-pressed and hot-isostatic-pressed condition. The casting were sectioned and isothermally forged into pancakes. All the materials were tested in compression as a function of temperature, and at high temperatures as a function of strain rate. The test results are discussed.

Synthesis of imide/arylene ether copolymers for adhesives and composite matrices

A series of imide/arylene ether copolymers were prepared from the reaction of an amorphous arylene ether oligomer and a semi-crystalline imide oligomer. These copolymers were thermally characterized and mechanical properties were measured. One block copolymer was endcapped and the molecular weight was controlled to provide a material that displayed good compression moldability and attractive adhesion and composite properties.

Statistical mechanics models for motion and force planning

The models of statistical mechanics provide an alternative to the methods of classical mechanics more traditionally used in robotics. They have a potential to: improve analysis of object collisions; handle kinematic and dynamic contact interactions within the same frmework; and reduce the need for perfect deterministic world model information. The statistical mechanics models characterize the state of the system as a probability density function (p.d.f.) whose time evolution is governed by a partial differential equation subject to boundary and initial conditions. The boundary conditions when rigid objects collide reflect the conservation of momentum. The models are being developed to embedd in remote semi-autonomous systems with a need to reason and interact with a multiobject environment.
