Mathematical modeling of the aerodynamic characteristics in flight dynamics

Basic concepts involved in the mathematical modeling of the aerodynamic response of an aircraft to arbitrary maneuvers are reviewed. The original formulation of an aerodynamic response in terms of nonlinear functionals is shown to be compatible with a derivation based on the use of nonlinear functional expansions. Extensions of the analysis through its natural connection with ideas from bifurcation theory are indicated.

Mathematical Model For Scattering From Mirrors

Additional terms account for effects of particulate contamination. Semiempirical mathematical model of scattering of light from surface of mirror gives improved account of effects of particulate contamination. Models that treated only scattering by microscopic irregularities in surface gave bidirectional reflectance distribution functions differing from measured scattering intensities over some ranges of angles.

A mathematical model of the maximum power density attainable in an alkaline hydrogen/oxygen fuel cell

A mathematical model of a hydrogen/oxygen alkaline fuel cell is presented that can be used to predict the polarization behavior under various power loads. The major limitations to achieving high power densities are indicated and methods to increase the maximum attainable power density are suggested. The alkaline fuel cell model describes the phenomena occurring in the solid, liquid, and gaseous phases of the anode, separator, and cathode regions based on porous electrode theory applied to three phases. Fundamental equations of chemical engineering that describe conservation of mass and charge, species transport, and kinetic phenomena are used to develop the model by treating all phases as a homogeneous continuum.

Aerodynamic mathematical modeling - basic concepts

This lecture is a review of the basic concepts involved In the mathematical modeling of the aerodynamic response of an aircraft to arbitrary maneuvers. The review leads from Bryan's original formulation through the concepts of linear aerodynamic indicial functions and superposition to the extension of these concepts into the nonlinear regime. The nonlinear generalization yields a form for the aerodynamic response that can be built up from the responses to a limited number of well-defined characteristic motions, reproducible in principle either in wind-tunnel experiments or flow-field computations. A further generalization leads to a torn, accommodating the discontinuous and double-valued behavior characteristic of hysteresis in the steady-state aerodynamic response

Development and validation of a blade-element mathematical model for the AH-64A Apache helicopter

A high-fidelity blade-element mathematical model for the AH-64A Apache Advanced Attack Helicopter has been developed by the Aeroflightdynamics Directorate of the U.S. Army's Aviation and Troop Command (ATCOM) at Ames Research Center. The model is based on the McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Systems' (MDHS) Fly Real Time (FLYRT) model of the AH-64A (acquired under contract) which was modified in-house and augmented with a blade-element-type main-rotor module. This report describes, in detail, the development of the rotor module, and presents some results of an extensive validation effort.

Patient-Specific Mathematical Model of the Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma Microenvironment

The interactions between cells and molecules in the tumor microenvironment can give insight into the initiation and progression of tumors and their optimal treatment options. In this paper, we developed an ordinary differential equation (ODE) mathematical model of the interaction network of key players in the clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) microenvironment. We then performed a global gradient-based sensitivity analysis to investigate the effects of the most sensitive parameters of the model on the number of cancer cells. The results indicate that parameters related to IL-6 have high a impact on cancer cell growth, such that decreasing the level of IL-6 can remarkably slow the tumor’s growth.

Mathematical models for the numerical study of turbulent flows

This paper presents (1) a brief overview of mathematical models used in the numerical study of turbulent flows; (2) a k-epsilon model of turbulence; and (3) extensions of the k-epsilon model. These account for some of the effects of compressibility, low Reynolds number, streamline curvature, and preferential stress dissipation.

A Mathematical Model of Breast Tumor Progression Based on Immune Infiltration

Breast cancer is the most prominent type of cancer among women. Understanding the microenvironment of breast cancer and the interactions between cells and cytokines will lead to better treatment approaches for patients. In this study, we developed a data-driven mathematical model to investigate the dynamics of key cells and cytokines involved in breast cancer development. We used gene expression profiles of tumors to estimate the relative abundance of each immune cell and group patients based on their immune patterns. Dynamical results show the complex interplay between cells and molecules, and sensitivity analysis emphasizes the direct effects of macrophages and adipocytes on cancer cell growth. In addition, we observed the dual effect of IFN-γ on cancer proliferation, either through direct inhibition of cancer cells or by increasing the cytotoxicity of CD8+ T-cells.

On Soft Mathematical Models of Subjective Time Acceleration with Age

It is a commonplace perception that speed of time subjectively experienced by humans significantly differs from chronological (objective) time and shows a great deal of variability. An often cited example is the phenomenon of the time acceleration with age - subjectively, the time passes faster as we get older. While the exact mechanisms behind it are not yet fully established, here we consider three 'soft' (conceptual) mathematical models that might be applicable to the speeding time phenomenon: two proportionality theories widely discussed in the past and the original model that takes into account the novelty of experience effect. Furthermore, the latter is found the most plausible, as not only it satisfactorily describes the decadal subjective time acceleration, but also offers a reasonable explanation of the human life experience accumulation with age.

Mathematical modeling of moving boundary problems in thermal energy storage

The capability for predicting the performance of thermal energy storage (RES) subsystems and components using PCM's based on mathematical and physical models is developed. Mathematical models of the dynamic thermal behavior of (TES) subsystems using PCM's based on solutions of the moving boundary thermal conduction problem and on heat and mass transfer engineering correlations are also discussed.
