Automated Production of Optimization-Based Control Logics for Dynamic Facade Systems, with Experimental Application to Two-Zone External Venetian Blinds

The primary goal of this research is to devise a system that produces controllers for complex fenestration systems that perform nearly as well as Model Predictive Control but at a level of cost and implementation complexity that rivals simple heuristic controls. To this end, a cloud-based automated controller production system has been set up for a motorized external Venetian blind device, with a simple web interface that can be used by non-experts. The computation cost per controller is in the range of a few dollars, and the control logic is simple enough to be implemented on small and cheap distributed controllers. The web interface allows the user to specify some details of their particular building and window configuration, including orientation, latitude, interior geometries, and lighting and HVAC system parameters. Upon submittal, a cloud-based system configures the necessary files and commands, and then runs thousands of optimizations with them. Once the calculations are finished, the system produces a lookup table and interpolation-based controller scripts that can be used on a simple and cheap distributed controller. This paper describes the underlying models and optimization processes. It also describes the resulting control logics for two cases tested at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Advanced Windows Testbed Facility: illuminance maximization subject to glare constraints; and lighting + HVAC energy minimization. The performance of the model-based controllers produced by the automated web-based system are compared to a heuristic ‘block beam’ controller in physical experiments at the Testbed. The experimental results are supplemented by simulation experiments with the same configuration as the Testbed. The results show the illuminance maximizing controller significantly outperforms the heuristic controller in terms of glare avoidance, and also outperforms it in terms of hours of daylight autonomy. The energy minimizing controller also outperforms the heuristic controller. This paper also discusses how the web-based system may be extended to consider other configurations, such as electrochromic windows and thermally massive HVAC systems. Potential roles for this type of system within the building design and construction industry are discussed.

Applications of Fuzzy Logic for Tritium Sensing Technology

Fuzzy Logic is a mathematical method that can represent human-like decisions by analyzing vagueness. The project is a practical approach for evaluating sensors using a fuzzy group best-worst method. Results What is the best sensor? The fuzzy logic methods give an answer to that through a selection system. The relationship between the inputs and the outputs gives consumers an understanding of how the best sensor was found through a scoring of each quality/criteria and their corresponding sub-criteria through expert opinion.

Applications of fuzzy logic and best-worst method for tritium sensor selection

Accurate assessment of tritium as a fuel source is critical in fusion reactions, necessitating effective sensor evaluation methods. This study investigates a multi-criteria decision-making framework for selecting tritium sensors, integrating fuzzy logic to enhance decision quality. Initial attempts at applying fuzzy logic were found to be too elementary and failed to capture the complexity of multi-criteria selection; this prompted a refined approach that incorporated expert insights and advanced ranking techniques for sensor evaluation. The research used a two-stage methodology. In the first stage, important criteria and sub-criteria for sensor performance were identified and defined. These criteria were then weighted and scored using a fuzzy best-worst method, drawing upon expert opinions to ensure relevance and validity. The second stage involved interpreting information about varying sensors to rank them based on their overall criteria scores, encouraging the selection of the most suitable options. The result of the study is a proposed method for effective sensor selection in fusion reactors, which in turn will significantly improve the reliability of tritium monitoring in fusion applications.

Batch fabrication process development for ferrite logic conductors

A process for fabricating ultrareliable magnetic ferrite logic circuits is described in which the conductors are formed by a combination of two batch type processes - photolithography and electroplating - and a mechanized writing process for completing conductors in the third dimension. Up to 4 turns, through an aperture 1 mm in diameter, are formed by the described process. The number of joints in the conductors is reduced by use of this process to only those which are required for input, output and power connections of a logic block. To demonstrate feasibility, 8-stage magnetic ring counter circuits have been fabricated.

Versatile logic system for use in nuclear experiments on scientific satellites.

An improved fast low-power-drain logic system has been developed for use in nuclear experiments on scientific satellites. The basic unit of the system is an AND-NAND gate which has a response in the 10-nsec range, a power drain of 2.0 mw and operates over the temperature range of -40 to +80 C. In addition to providing the AND-NAND logic functions, one or more of the basic units may be connected to yield a monostable pulse generator, a pulse generator proceeding an output pulse at the leading edge of the input pulse, a delay, a threshold detector, and a bistable circuit. The system requires relatively simple circuitry for interfacing at its outputs and inputs.

Control logic for a 30 cm diameter ion thruster

The various missions to be performed by the 30-cm diameter mercury bombardment thruster engine are discussed. The operating constraints imposed by the thermal environment, allowable time to reach steady state operation, and the number of start-ups required are examined. The variety of requirements is further analyzed for the impact on the basic control logic for the engine. The control logic is divided into the start-up, run, and shutdown modes of operation. The start-up mode is reported.

Guidance logic for spiral approaches

A spiral approach concept is proposed as a standard procedure for independent, commercial VTOL operations conducted in close proximity to CTOL operations. A guidance logic is developed for this VTOL application, although the results may be applicable to curved approaches by STOL or CTOL aircraft as well. The guidance concept attempts to maintain constant airspeed along a fixed radius nominal spiral. The presence of wind requires a continuous variation in bank angle and heading rate to remain on the desired path. Linear perturbation analysis is used to select satisfactory feedback gains for commanded bank angle, longitudinal acceleration and vertical speed. A wind estimator detects differences between the predicted and observed wind and uses the result to modify the nominal control. For 4-D guidance the nominal time must be computed as a function of turn angle, which requires the solution of an elliptic integral. Time-varying longitudinal accelerations are necessary for 4-D guidance when the observed wind differs from the predicted wind, or when wind shear is present. The logic and the linear feedback gains have been tested in a nonlinear simulation. Results have generally verified the performance predicted by linear analysis.

Development of an optical parallel logic device and a half-adder circuit for digital optical processing

The paper describes the fabrication and operation of an optical parallel logic (OPAL) device which performs Boolean algebraic operations on binary images. Several logic operations on two input binary images were demonstrated using an 8 x 8 device with a CdS photoconductor and a twisted nematic liquid crystal. Two such OPAL devices can be interconnected to form a half-adder circuit which is one of the essential components of a CPU in a digital signal processor.

LSI logic for phase-control rectifiers

Signals for controlling phase-controlled rectifier circuit are generated by combinatorial logic than can be implemented in large-scale integration (LSI). LSI circuit saves space, weight, and assembly time compared to previous controls that employ one-shot multivibrators, latches, and capacitors. LSI logic functions by sensing three phases of ac power source and by comparing actual currents with intended currents.

A computer program for the generation of logic networks from task chart data

The Network Generation Program (NETGEN), which creates logic networks from task chart data is presented. NETGEN is written in CDC FORTRAN IV (Extended) and runs in a batch mode on the CDC 6000 and CYBER 170 series computers. Data is input via a two-card format and contains information regarding the specific tasks in a project. From this data, NETGEN constructs a logic network of related activities with each activity having unique predecessor and successor nodes, activity duration, descriptions, etc. NETGEN then prepares this data on two files that can be used in the Project Planning Analysis and Reporting System Batch Network Scheduling program and the EZPERT graphics program.

The spatial and logical organization of devices in an advanced industrial robot system

This paper describes the geometrical and device organization of a robot system which is based in part upon transformations of Cartesian frames and exchangeable device tree structures. It discusses coordinate frame transformations, geometrical device representation and solution degeneracy along with the data structures which support the exchangeable logical-physical device assignments. The system, which has been implemented in a minicomputer, supports vision, force, and other sensors. It allows tasks to be instantiated with logically equivalent devices and it allows tasks to be defined relative to appropriate frames. Since these frames are, in turn, defined relative other frames this organization provides a significant simplification in task specification and a high degree of system modularity.

Logic-controlled occlusive cuff system

An occlusive cuff system comprises a pressure cuff and a source of regulated compressed gas feeding the cuff through an electrically operated fill valve. An electrically operated vent valve vents the cuff to the ambient pressure. The fill valve is normally closed and the vent valve is normally open. In response to an external start signal, a logic network opens the fill valve and closes the vent valve, thereby starting the pressurization cycle and a timer. A pressure transducer continuously monitors the pressure in the cuff. When the transducer's output equals a selected reference voltage, a comparator causes the logic network to close the fill valve. The timer, after a selected time delay, opens the vent valve to the ambient pressure, thereby ending the pressurization cycle.

RS-232 communications analyzer module for HP-1602A logic analyzer

The design and construction of a simple ASCII analyzer is described. It was built to interface directly to a Hewlett-Packard 1602A logic state analyzer but the circuitry could easily be configured to operate with any logic analyzer. The design of the ASCII analyzer allows the use of all the trace and delay functions for the HF-1602A. The ASCII analyzer circuit utilizes two universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitters (UAR/Ts) to simultaneously examine both the transmit and receive serial data lines. Baud rates from 300 to 9600 bits per second are selectable with the externally mounted DIP switch. The unit requires no external power supply connection and all of the integrated circuits are CMOS for low power consumption.
