HCIT Broadband Contrast Performance Sensitivity Studies

The High Contrast Imaging Testbed (HCIT) at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory employs a broadband wavefront correction algorithm called Electric Field Conjugation (EFC) to obtain the required 10-10 contrast. This algorithm works with one deformable mirror (DM) to estimate the electric-field to be controlled, and with one or multiple DM's to create a "darkhole" in a predefined region of the image plane where terrestrial planets would be found. We have investigated the effects of absorbing dust particles on a flat optic, absorbing spots on the occulting mask, dead actuators on the DM, and the effects of control bandwidth on the efficiency of the EFC algorithm in a Lyot coronagraph configuration. The structural design of the optical system as well as the parameters of various optical elements used in the analysis is drawn from those of the HCIT system that have been implemented with one DM. The simulation takes into account the surface errors of various optical elements. Results of some of these studies have been verified by actual measurements.

An optimized rotation-axis model-following controller for STS orbiter attitude maneuvers

This paper describes a new controller for automatic attitude maneuvers of the Space Shuttle Orbiter. The controller incorporates a new solution algorithm for partially linearized, fuel-optimal maneuvers for RCS jet controlled spacecraft. These solutions provide model trajectories and jet commands that are easily tracked using a feed-forward, feedback controller structure. The result is a substantial performance improvement over the current Orbiter attitude maneuver controller. The paper discusses optimal maneuvers for this type of vehicle, giving detail of the solution algorithm. Closed-loop controller design and implementation is discussed. Detailed performance results are presented.

Identification of tau leptons using a convolutional neural network with domain adaptation

A tau lepton identification algorithm,DeepTau, based on convolutional neural network techniques, has been developed in the CMS experiment to discriminate reconstructed hadronic decays of tau leptons (τ h ) from quark or gluon jets and electrons and muons that are misreconstructed as τ h candidates. The latest version of this algorithm, v2.5, includes domain adaptation by backpropagation, a technique that reduces discrepancies between collision data and simulation in the region with the highest purity of genuine τh candidates. Additionally, a refined training workflow improves classification performance with respect to the previous version of the algorithm, with a reduction of 30–50% in the probability for quark and gluon jets to be misidentified as τ h candidates for given reconstruction and identification efficiencies. This paper presents the novel improvements introduced in theDeepTau algorithm and evaluates its performance in LHC proton-proton collision data at √(s) = 13 and 13.6 TeV collected in 2018 and 2022 with integrated luminosities of 60 and 35 fb -1 , respectively. Techniques to calibrate the performance of the τ h identification algorithm in simulation with respect to its measured performance in real data are presented, together with a subset of results among those measured for use in CMS physics analyses.

Are windshear training aid recommendations appropriate for other than large jet transports? Pilot procedures: Shear models

Information is given in vugraph form on pilot procedures in windshear, typical winds in a downburst, a downburst encounter at takeoff by a large jet transport and a light turboprop twin, and a comparison of pitch algorithms in an approach encounter with downburst shear. It is observed that the light turboprop appears no less tolerant of a downburst encounter than the large jet.

Performance of modern color decompositions for standard candle LHC tree amplitudes

In the last decade, developments of matrix element and phase space generators have focused on providing good efficiency and maximal flexibility and automation for a wide range of physical processes. However, as recent studies have shown, they are a major bottleneck in the established Monte Carlo event generator toolchains. With the advent of the HL-LHC and ever rising precision requirements, future developments will need to focus on computational performance, especially at intermediate to large jet multiplicities. We present the novel BlockGen family of fast matrix element algorithms that are amenable for GPU acceleration, making use of modern, minimal color decompositions. Moreover, we discuss the performance achieved for standard candle processes such as V +jets and tt̄+jets production.

The hidden geometry of particle collisions

We establish that many fundamental concepts and techniques in quantum field theory and collider physics can be naturally understood and unified through a simple new geometric language. The idea is to equip the space of collider events with a metric, from which other geometric objects can be rigorously defined. Our analysis is based on the energy mover’s distance, which quantifies the “work” required to rearrange one event into another. This metric, which operates purely at the level of observable energy flow information, allows for a clarified definition of infrared and collinear safety and related concepts. A number of well-known collider observables can be exactly cast as the minimum distance between an event and various manifolds in this space. Jet definitions, such as exclusive cone and sequential recombination algorithms, can be directly derived by finding the closest few-particle approximation to the event. Several area- and constituent-based pileup mitigation strategies are naturally expressed in this formalism as well. Finally, we lift our reasoning to develop a precise distance between theories, which are treated as collections of events weighted by cross sections. In all of these various cases, a better understanding of existing methods in our geometric language suggests interesting new ideas and generalizations.

Abel Inversion of Deflectometric Measurements in Dynamic Flows

We present an Abel-inversion algorithm to reconstruct mean and rms refractive-index profiles from spatially resolved statistical measurements of the beam-deflection angle in time-dependent, axisymmetric flows. An oscillating gas-jet diffusion flame was investigated as a test case for applying the algorithm. Experimental data were obtained across the whole field by a rainbow schlieren apparatus. Results show that simultaneous multipoint measurements are necessary to reconstruct the rms refractive index accurately.

alaric parton shower for hadron colliders

We introduce the parton shower for simulating quantum chromodynamics (QCD) radiation at hadron colliders and present numerical results from an implementation in the event generator . provides a consistent framework to quantify certain systematic uncertainties which cannot be eliminated by comparing the parton shower with analytic resummation. In particular, it allows us to study recoil effects away from the soft and collinear limits without the need to change the evolution variable or the splitting functions. We assess the performance of in Drell-Yan lepton pair and QCD jet production, and present the first multijet merging for the new algorithm. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Study of aircraft centered navigation, guidance, and traffic situation system concept for terminal area operation

A concept for automating the control of air traffic in the terminal area in which the primary man-machine interface is the cockpit is described. The ground and airborne inputs required for implementing this concept are discussed. Digital data link requirements of 10,000 bits per second are explained. A particular implementation of this concept including a sequencing and separation algorithm which generates flight paths and implements a natural order landing sequence is presented. Onboard computer/display avionics utilizing a traffic situation display is described. A preliminary simulation of this concept has been developed which includes a simple, efficient sequencing algorithm and a complete aircraft dynamics model. This simulated jet transport was flown through automated terminal-area traffic situations by pilots using relatively sophisticated displays, and pilot performance and observations are discussed.

Aerodynamic Interference Due to MSL Reaction Control System

An investigation of effectiveness of the reaction control system (RCS) of Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) entry capsule during atmospheric flight has been conducted. The reason for the investigation is that MSL is designed to fly a lifting actively guided entry with hypersonic bank maneuvers, therefore an understanding of RCS effectiveness is required. In the course of the study several jet configurations were evaluated using Langley Aerothermal Upwind Relaxation Algorithm (LAURA) code, Data Parallel Line Relaxation (DPLR) code, Fully Unstructured 3D (FUN3D) code and an Overset Grid Flowsolver (OVERFLOW) code. Computations indicated that some of the proposed configurations might induce aero-RCS interactions, sufficient to impede and even overwhelm the intended control torques. It was found that the maximum potential for aero-RCS interference exists around peak dynamic pressure along the trajectory. Present analysis largely relies on computational methods. Ground testing, flight data and computational analyses are required to fully understand the problem. At the time of this writing some experimental work spanning range of Mach number 2.5 through 4.5 has been completed and used to establish preliminary levels of confidence for computations. As a result of the present work a final RCS configuration has been designed such as to minimize aero-interference effects and it is a design baseline for MSL entry capsule.

Automated Approach to Accurate, Precise, and Fast Detector Simulation and Reconstruction

Detector simulation and reconstruction are a significant computational bottleneck in particle physics. Here, we develop particle-flow neural-assisted simulations (parnassus) to address this challenge. Our deep learning model takes as input a point cloud (particles impinging on a detector) and produces a point cloud (reconstructed particles). By combining detector simulations and reconstruction into one step, we aim to minimize resource utilization and enable fast surrogate models suitable for application both inside and outside large collaborations. We demonstrate this approach using a publicly available dataset of jets passed through the full simulation and reconstruction pipeline of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. We show that parnassus accurately mimics the CMS particle flow algorithm on the (statistically) same events it was trained on and can generalize to jet momentum and type outside of the training distribution.

Sensor failure detection for jet engines

Revisions to the advanced sensor failure detection, isolation, and accommodation (DIA) algorithm, developed under the sensor failure detection system program were studied to eliminate the steady state errors due to estimation filter biases. Three algorithm revisions were formulated and one revision for detailed evaluation was chosen. The selected version modifies the DIA algorithm to feedback the actual sensor outputs to the integral portion of the control for the nofailure case. In case of a failure, the estimates of the failed sensor output is fed back to the integral portion. The estimator outputs are fed back to the linear regulator portion of the control all the time. The revised algorithm is evaluated and compared to the baseline algorithm developed previously.

Acoustic analysis using numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations

Numerical solutions of the time-dependent compressible Navier-Stokes equations are employed to analyze the unsteady features of jet flows which contribute to jet noise. The turbulent-mass flux spectra are examined in detail in the numerical analysis, and MacCormack's explicit finite difference algorithm is used to solve the governing equations. The computational grid is based on an axisymmetric jet with simple exponential stretching used to optimize the resolution of critical unsteady flow features. The time-varying numerical data are analyzed, and the time averages of the velocity and turbulence-intensity profiles are shown to agree with experimental data. Grid refinement and longer run times improved the prediction of the experimental mass-flux spectra. The numerical procedure can be extended to 3D jet-flow configurations to study the related 3D unsteady flow features.

Diquark scalar production of a vectorlike quark pair at the LHC

We study the discovery potential of LHC experiments for resonantly produced vectorlike quarks ($\chi$) when the $s$-channel resonance is an ultraheavy scalar diquark ($S_{uu}$) with a mass in the 7–8.5 TeV range. Focusing on the process $pp \rightarrow S_{uu} \rightarrow \chi \chi \rightarrow (W^+b)(W^+b)$ we target the fully hadronic decay mode of both $W^+$ bosons, resulting in a six-jet final state. Signal–background separation is performed using Machine Learning algorithms trained to construct a multidimensional classifier. Our results show that ATLAS or CMS searches in this channel, with an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb$^{-1}$, could discover or exclude a scalar diquark with a mass near 8 TeV even for a relatively small Yukawa coupling to up quarks, $y_{uu} \simeq 0.2$. We also present preliminary studies of the four-jet final state from $pp \rightarrow S_{uu} \rightarrow u \chi \rightarrow u (W^+b)$.

Concentration fluctuations and flammability of cryo-compressed hydrogen and methane jets

Compressed hydrogen stored at cryogenic temperatures has a much higher density than room-temperature storage, which enables large-scale hydrogen storage and transport. An understanding of the release of cryogenic hydrogen from pressurized vessels is needed to evaluate the risk and safety concerns with the use of this fuel. Here, the present work extends the analysis of previous experimental studies that measured the gas concentrations of cryo-compressed hydrogen jets and methane jets using a laser Raman scattering diagnostic system. Since the Raman signals are very small, a denoising algorithm was applied to significantly reduce the noise to enable statistical analysis of the data. The transient features of the turbulent jets were characterized by their concentration intermittencies and probability density functions (PDFs). A two-part PDF was developed to predict the bimodal features of the jet concentration distributions. Then, the flammability factors of the cryogenic jets were calculated based on the intermittency and the PDF.

Comparative Analysis of Direct and Indirect Cooling of Wide-Bandgap Power Modules and Performance Enhancement of Jet Impingement-Based Direct Substrate Cooling

With the development of high-power and high-torque machines, requirements for high-power density electronics are increasing. Thermal management of such systems requires high heat extraction. Conventional air cooling based heat sinks and cold plate based liquid cooling have their own benefits for various applications but has limitations for high power density applications. The current study explores a jet impingement based direct substrate cooling system that was implemented for a SiC based direct bonded Cu substrate for various power losses. Numerical comparison between jet impingement cooling and conventional horizontal/indirect cooling (pin fin heat sink and genetic algorithm-optimized heat sink) showed that the area weighted average of the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) is high for both horizontal cooling designs, and the local HTC is higher for jet impingement. Design iterations were undertaken to resolve the bottleneck of this cooling system. Increasing the number of nozzles helped to cover more area at the direct bonded Cu bottom plate, which drops the chip temperature considerably. With a constant flow rate, increasing the number of nozzles would decrease local jet velocity, which reduces the heat extraction by jet impingement. This issue can be addressed by reducing the diameter of nozzle but doing so results in a high pressure drop where the design constraint is 2 psi. A flared nozzle design is proposed, which has a higher spreading angle of the jet that increases the flow coverage and reduces the pressure drop of the coolant loop.
