Isothermal dendritic growth - A proposed microgravity experiment

This paper describes an isothermal dendritic growth experiment (IDGE), a microgravity-oriented spaceborne scientific experiment designed to obtain 'convection-free' dendritic growth and thereby provide a test of dendritic growth theory. The apparatus includes a controlled thermostatic bath capable of providing + or - 2 mK stability, a photographic data collection system, a crystal growth chamber ensuring 'free' dendritic growth, and an optical RAM camera for crystal growth detection. The experiment will be carried on essentially automatically aboard the Materials Science Laboratory in the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle. The results of preliminary ground-based studies are presented.

Non-isothermal buckling behavior of viscoplastic shell structures

Described are the mathematical model and solution methodologies for analyzing the structural response of thin, metallic elasto-viscoplastic shell structures under large thermomechanical loads and their non-isothermal buckling behavior. Among the system responses associated with these loads and conditions are snap-through, buckling, thermal buckling, and creep buckling. This geometric and material nonlinearities (of high order) can be anticipated and are considered in the model and the numerical treatment.

Isothermal dendritic growth: A low gravity experiment

The Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment is an active crystal growth experiment designed to test dendritic growth theory at low undercoolings where convection prohibits such studies at 1 g. The experiment will be essentially autonomous, though limited in-flight interaction through a computer interface is planned. One of the key components of the apparatus will be a crystal growth chamber capable of achieving oriented single crystal dendritic growth. Recent work indicates that seeding the chamber with a crystal of the proper orientation will not, in and of itself, be sufficient to meet this requirement. Additional flight hardware and software required for the STS flight experiment are currently being developed at NASA Lewis Research Center and at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The isothermal fatigue behavior of a unidirectional SiC/Ti composite and the Ti alloy matrix

The high temperature fatigue behavior of a metal matrix composite (MMC) consisting of Ti-15V-3Cr-3Al-3Sn (Ti-15-3) matrix reinforced by 33 vol percent of continuous unidirectional SiC fibers was experimentally and analytically evaluated. Isothermal MMC fatigue tests with constant amplitude loading parallel to the fiber direction were performed at 300 and 550 C. Comparative fatigue tests of the Ti-15-3 matrix alloy were also conducted. Composite fatigue behavior and the in-situ stress state of the fiber and matrix were analyzed with a micromechanical model, the Concentric Cylinder Model (CCM). The cyclic stress-strain response of the composite was stable at 300 C. However, an increase in cyclic mean strain foreshortened MMC fatigue life at high strain ranges at 550 C. Fatigue tests of the matrix alloy and CCM analyses indicated this response was associated with stress relaxation of the matrix in the composite.

Isothermal magnetostatic atmospheres. III - Similarity solutions with current proportional to the magnetic potential squared

A family of isothermal magnetostatic atmospheres with one ignorable coordinate corresponding to a uniform gravitational field in a plane geometry is considered. It is assumed that the current (J) is proportional to the square of the magnetostatic potential and falls off exponentially with distance. Results are presented for the contributions of the anisotropic J x B force (where B is the magnetic field induction), the gravitational force, and the gas pressure gradient to the force balance.

Isothermal and 'bithermal' thermomechanical fatigue behavior of a NiCoCrAlY-coated single crystal superalloy

Specimens of single crystal PWA 1480 with group of zone axes (100) orientation, bare, or with NiCoCrAlY coating PWA 276, were tested in low cycle fatigue (LCF) at 650, 870, and 1050 C, and in simplified bithermal thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) tests between these temperatures. These tests were examined as a bridge between isothermal LCF and general TMF. In the bithermal test, and inelastic strain is applied at one temperature, T sub max, and reversed at T sub min. The out-of-phase (OP) test type imposing tension at T sub min and compression at T sub max received most study, since it was more damaging than the in-phase type. Specifically investigated were the effects of: inelastic strain range, the coating, delta T, T sub max, T sub min, and the environment.

Predicting minimum Al concentrations for protective scale fromation on Ni-base alloys. I - Isothermal oxidation. II - Cyclic oxidation

Criteria proposed to predict the minimum bulk Al concentration for the formation of protective Al2O3 scales on Ni-based alloys during isothermal oxidation (two criteria proposed by Wagner, 1952 and 1959) and cyclic oxidation (the criteria proposed by Wahl, 1983, and Whittle, 1972/Wahl, 1983) were applied to Ni-Al and Ni-Cr-Al(Zr) alloys, respectively. It is shown that the first Wagner (1952) criterion underpredicted, by a factor of 3, the experimentally observed minimum Al concentration for the formation of an external Al2O3 scale on Ni-Al alloys at 1200 C; the second Wagner criterion predicted a transition from internal oxidation to continuous Al2O3 formation in good agreement with experimentally observed concentrations. It was also found that the two criteria for an Al2O3 scale formation during cyclic oxidation of Ni-Cr-Al(Zr) alloys were inadequate to predict the minimum Al concentration necessary for repeated formation of an Al2O3 scale, regardless of the adherence of the scale.

On the stability of a class of isothermal, magnetostatic atmospheres

The stability of a class of isothermal magnetostatic atmospheres with one ignorable coordinate corresponding to a uniform gravitational field in a plane geometry is explored. Special attention is given to the stability of nonpotential equilibria that have the same magnetic field geometry as the potential equilibrium of the solution family. It is found that equilibria in which the source currents for the potential field are buried at large distances below the photospheric base are stable. Also considered is the stability of configurations in which the source currents for the potential field are located at a finite depth below the base.

Flight software development for the isothermal dendritic growth experiment

The Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE) is a microgravity materials science experiment scheduled to fly in the cargo bay of the shuttle on the United States Microgravity Payload (USMP) carrier. The experiment will be operated by real-time control software which will not only monitor and control onboard experiment hardware, but will also communicate, via downlink data and uplink commands, with the Payload Operations Control Center (POCC) at NASA George C. Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). The software development approach being used to implement this system began with software functional requirements specification. This was accomplished using the Yourdon/DeMarco methodology as supplemented by the Ward/Mellor real-time extensions. The requirements specification in combination with software prototyping was then used to generate a detailed design consisting of structure charts, module prologues, and Program Design Language (PDL) specifications. This detailed design will next be used to code the software, followed finally by testing against the functional requirements. The result will be a modular real-time control software system with traceability through every phase of the development process.

Reflection and trapping of transient Alfven waves propagating in an isothermal atmosphere with constant gravity and uniform magnetic field

A time-dependent linear magnetohydrodynamic numerical model was used to investigate the propagation of Alfven waves in an isothermal and stratified atmosphere with constant gravity and uniform vertical magnetic field. Results show that the Alfven wave transit time for the wave source to infinity is finite and that the wave exhibits continuous partial reflection which becomes total reflection as the front approaches infinity. The total reflection causes the waves to be trapped in the cavity that extends from the wave source to infinity and in which the wave energy is stored. The results suggest that the reflection of Alfven waves (of sufficiently long period) from the outer corona is an intrinsic phenomenon for any stellar atmosphere stratified by gravity and an open magnetic field, and that, therefore, such waves may be trapped in the stellar atmosphere.

Spray characterization and turbulence properties in an isothermal spray with swirl

In the present experimental study of the effects of swirl on the dynamic behavior of drops and on the velocity and turbulence fields of an isothermal spray, using a two-component phase Doppler particle analyzer, mean velocity and turbulence properties were obtained for the gas phase. Large differences are noted in the spatial distribution of the drops over the spray's size, velocity, and number density, when the spray in coflowing air is compared with the atomizer spraying into the swirling flow field with the same axial velocity. The turbulence properties of the swirling flow exhibit significant influence on the dynamic behavior of the drops.

Conditions for vertical propagation of magnetoacoustic waves in an isothermal atmosphere

The propagation of magnetoacoustic waves in an isothermal atmosphere with constant gravity and uniform magnetic field of an arbitrary direction is considered. The conditions for the vertical propagation of these waves are determined by characteristic frequencies that arise in the MHD wave equation which is considered here in the limit of low-beta plasma. The obtained steady state solutions to the wave equation describe the behavior of fast and slow magnetoacoustic waves and allow defining the characteristic frequencies that separate domains of wave frequency where the sinusoidal and nonsinusoidal wave solutions are found. The particular problem of dependence of the characteristic frequencies on the density gradient as well as on the strength and direction of the uniform magnetic field are discussed. The obtained results may have important consequences on the behavior of magnetoacoustic waves in stellar atmospheres and may be found useful in studying stellar p-mode oscillations.

Silicate liquid immiscibility in isothermal crystallization experiments

The role of silicate liquid immiscibility (SLI) in the petrogenesis of lunar granites was investigated in experiments in which four glasses were synthesized from reagent-grade oxides and carbonates with the compositions of two of the sets of coexisting liquids reported by Hess et al. (1975): a KREEP basalt derivative and a mare basalt derivative. Isothermal crystallization experiments showed that SLI is a stable phenomenon in residual lunar liquids saturated with plagioclase, and is likely to produce large compositional separations. The results indicate that controlled-cooling-rate experiments of Rutherford et al. (1974), and Hess et al. (1975, 1978) were substantially correct analogs of the natural process of liquid immiscibility.

Long term isothermal aging and thermal analysis of N-CYCAP polyimides

The N-CYCAP polyimides utilize a (2,2) paracyclophane endcap that polymerizes and does not generate volatile gases during the cure process. These polyimides have both high glass temperatures (390 C) and an onset of decomposition in air of 560 C. Thermal oxidative stability (TOS) weight loss studies show that replacing 25 percent by weight of the paraphenylene diamine in the polymer backbone with metaphenylene diamine improves the weight loss characteristics. N-CYCAP neat resin samples performed better than PMR-II-50 when exposed at 343 and 371 C in air for up to 1000 hours. Preliminary composite studies show that both PMR-II-50 and N-CYCAP have better thermal stability when fabricated on T-40R. Higher isothermal aging temperatures of longer aging times are needed to determine the differences in TOS between composite samples of PMR-II-50 and N-CYCAP polyimides.

Isothermal thermogravimetric data acquisition analysis system

The description of an Isothermal Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) Data Acquisition System is presented. The system consists of software and hardware to perform a wide variety of TGA experiments. The software is written in ANSI C using Borland's Turbo C++. The hardware consists of a 486/25 MHz machine with a Capital Equipment Corp. IEEE488 interface card. The interface is to a Hewlett Packard 3497A data acquisition system using two analog input cards and a digital actuator card. The system provides for 16 TGA rigs with weight and temperature measurements from each rig. Data collection is conducted in three phases. Acquisition is done at a rapid rate during initial startup, at a slower rate during extended data collection periods, and finally at a fast rate during shutdown. Parameters controlling the rate and duration of each phase are user programmable. Furnace control (raising and lowering) is also programmable. Provision is made for automatic restart in the event of power failure or other abnormal terminations. Initial trial runs were conducted to show system stability.
