Signatures of transposon-mediated genome inflation, host specialization, and photoentrainment in Entomophthora muscae and allied entomophthoralean fungi

Despite over a century of observations, the obligate insect parasites within the order Entomophthorales remain poorly characterized at the genetic level. In this manuscript, we present a genome for a laboratory-tractable Entomophthora muscae isolate that infects fruit flies. Our E. muscae assembly is 1.03 Gb, consists of 7810 contigs and contains 81.3% complete fungal BUSCOs. Using a comparative approach with recent datasets from entomophthoralean fungi, we show that giant genomes are the norm within Entomophthoraceae owing to extensive, but not recent, Ty3 retrotransposon activity. In addition, we find that E. muscae and its closest allies possess genes that are likely homologs to the blue-light sensor white-collar 1, a Neurospora crassa gene that has a well-established role in maintaining circadian rhythms. We uncover evidence that E. muscae diverged from other entomophthoralean fungi by expansion of existing families, rather than loss of particular domains, and possesses a potentially unique suite of secreted catabolic enzymes, consistent with E. muscae’s species-specific, biotrophic lifestyle. Finally, we offer a head-to-head comparison of morphological and molecular data for species within the E. muscae species complex that support the need for taxonomic revision within this group. Altogether, we provide a genetic and molecular foundation that we hope will provide a platform for the continued study of the unique biology of entomophthoralean fungi.

Utilizing the Inflation Reduction Act to Remediate and Redevelop Energy Assets and Sites

There are thousands of retired and operating energy sites located in communities throughout the country waiting to be cleaned up and modernized. Together with other existing federal grants and tax credits, the newly created Energy Infrastructure Reinvestment (EIR) loan guarantees from the Department of Energy can catalyze capital investment in these sites, empowering local communities and reducing carbon pollution. The IRA makes available up to $250 billion in EIR loan guarantees and up to $5 billion in EIR credit subsidy to support remediating, repurposing, and redeveloping eligible sites. EIR provides opportunities for reinvestment in America’s energy communities amid the energy industry’s ongoing transformation to reduce carbon pollution. This resource guide describes four possible redevelopment models that align EIR resources with EPA Brownfield Grants and the energy community tax credit program.

Savior curvatons and large non-Gaussianity

Abstract Curvatons are light (compared to the Hubble scale during inflation) spectator fields during inflation that potentially contribute to adiabatic curvature perturbations post-inflation. They can alter CMB observables such as the spectral indexn s , the tensor-to-scalar ratior, and the local non-Gaussianity$$ {f}_{\textrm{NL}}^{\left(\textrm{loc}\right)} $$ f NL loc . We systematically explore the observable space of a curvaton with a quadratic potential. We find that when the underlying inflation model does not satisfy then s androbservational constraints but can be made viable with a significant contribution from what we call a savior curvaton, a large$$ \left|{f}_{\textrm{NL}}^{\left(\textrm{loc}\right)}\right| $$ f NL loc >0.05, such that the model is distinguishable from single-field inflation, is inevitable. On the other hand, when the underlying inflation model already satisfies then s androbservational constraints, so significant curvaton contribution is forbidden, a large$$ \left|{f}_{\textrm{NL}}^{\left(\textrm{loc}\right)}\right| $$ f NL loc >0.05 is possible in the exceptional case when the isocurvature fluctuation in the curvaton fluid is much greater than the global curvature fluctuation.

Wires, Solitons and the Big Bang. Final report

The overarching aim of the project was to improve our understanding of inflation and its end. The following were the main goals of the project: 1. Develop a novel statistical framework to understand particle production during inflation and reheating in scenarios with many poorly constrained components and calculate potential observational signatures. The goal was to be achieved in the following steps (i) Develop the theoretical framework (ii) Apply the framework to inflation and reheating 2. Develop analytical and numerical tools to explore the end of inflation and the energy transfer from inflation to daughter fields during reheating. The goal was to be achieved in two steps: (i) Characterize the eq. of state at the end of inflation using non-perturbative techniques and lattice simulations. (ii) Develop a novel numerical algorithm for gauge fields in a cosmological setting.

Predictive valve control system

A pressure control system may include a plurality of inflatable objects, each of the inflatable objects having a respective pressure sensor and a respective inflation valve, wherein each of the inflation valves has a behavior profile predictive of an amount of current used by the valve when operated. A valve controller of the system may have a pressure management circuit that receives information from the pressure sensors and is configured to automatically maintain a respective selected pressure in each of the inflatable objects by issuing commands to operate the inflation valves. An electrical current management circuit of the valve controller may be configured to predict, based on the valve behavior profiles, what effect the command would have on a total current usage, when executed, and automatically prevent any command that would cause the total current usage to exceed a maximum allowable current.

On the realization of WIMPflation

In this work, we consider models for inflation with a stable inflation. Reheating is achieved through scattering processes such as ΦΦ → h h, where h is the Standard Model Higgs boson. We consider the reheating process in detail and show that for a relatively large coupling (needed for the late annihilations of the inflation during freeze-out), reheating is almost instantaneous leading to a relatively high reheating temperature. The process ΦΦ ↔ h h brings the inflation back into equilibrium, leading to a well studied scalar singlet dark matter candidate and Higgs portal model. We argue that such models can be derived from no-scale supergravity.

A multiverse outside of the swampland

A multiverse can arise from landscapes without de Sitter minima. It can be populated during a period of eternal inflation without trans-Planckian field excursions and without flat potentials. This multiverse can explain the values of the cosmological constant and of the weak scale. In the process of proving these statements, we derive a few simple, but counterintuitive results. We show that it is easy to write models of eternal inflation compatible with the distance and refined de Sitter conjectures. Secondly, tunneling transitions that move fields from a lower-energy vacuum to a higher-energy vacuum and generate baby universes are possible, and occur during eternal inflation. Finally, we relax the assumption of no de Sitter minima and show that this more standard multiverse can be populated by Coleman-de Luccia transitions in about 100 e-folds of inflation.

TwInflation

The general structure of Hybrid Inflation remains a very well-motivated mechanism for lower-scale cosmic inflation in the face of improving constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio. However, as originally modeled, the “waterfall” field in this mechanism gives rise to a hierarchy problem (η–problem) for the inflaton after demanding standard effective field theory (EFT) control. We modify the hybrid mechanism and incorporate a discrete “twin” symmetry, thereby yielding a viable, natural and EFT-controlled model of non-supersymmetric low-scale inflation, “Twinflation”. Analogously to Twin Higgs models, the discrete exchange-symmetry with a “twin” sector reduces quadratic sensitivity in the inflationary potential to ultra-violet physics, at the root of the hierarchy problem. The observed phase of inflation takes place on a hilltop-like potential but without fine-tuning of the initial inflaton position in field-space. We also show that all parameters of the model can take natural values, below any associated EFT-cutoff mass scales and field values, thus ensuring straightforward theoretical control. We discuss the basic phenomenological considerations and constraints, as well as possible future directions.

Fuzzy Euclidean wormholes in the inflationary universe

In this paper, we investigate complex-valued Euclidean wormholes in the Starobinsky inflation. Due to the properties of the concave inflation potential, the classicality condition at both ends of the wormhole can be satisfied, as long as the initial condition of the inflation field is such that it is located sufficiently close to the hilltop. Furthermore, we compare the probabilities of classicalized wormholes with the Hartle–Hawking compact instantons and conclude that the Euclidean wormholes are probabilistically preferred than compact instantons, if the inflation lasts more than 50 e-foldings. Our result assumes that the Euclidean path integral is the correct effective description of quantum gravity. This opens a new window for various future investigations that can be either confirmed or refuted by future experiments.

Stochastic Dark Matter from Curvature Perturbations

We investigate the production of dark matter from metric perturbations produced during inflation or in standard cosmology. Perturbations break Weyl flatness of the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker metric, allowing conformally coupled fields—in particular, fermions studied here—to be produced even when their mass is negligible. Particle production can be computed by studying the Bogoliubov transformation induced by the stochastic background. For perturbations generated during inflation, we present a closed formula for the resulting abundance of particles that depends solely on the power spectrum of curvature perturbations at the end of inflation. This production mechanism can be dominant especially if the amplitude of curvature perturbations is enhanced for modes that exit the horizon toward the end of inflation. In the simplest scenario, the critical dark matter abundance is reproduced for M ≳ 10 6 GeV . Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Balloon Tag Manufacturing Technique for Sensor Fish and Live Fish Recovery

Fish may experience injuries and mortality when they pass through hydraulic conveyances at hydropower dams, even if these conveyances are designed to be fish-friendly, such as downstream bypass systems, modified spillways and turbines. The main methods used to study fish passage conditions in hydraulic structures involve direct, in situ testing using Sensor Fish technology and live fish. Sensor Fish data helps identify physical stressors and their locations in the fish passage environment, while live fish are assessed for injuries and mortality. Balloon tags, which are self-inflating balloons attached externally to Sensor Fish and live fish, aid in their recovery after passing through hydraulic structures. This article focuses on the development of balloon tags with varying numbers of dissolvable, vegetable-based capsules containing a mixture of oxalic acid, sodium bicarbonate powders, and water at two different temperatures. Our research determined that balloon tags with three capsules, injected with 5 mL of water at 18.3 °C, consistently achieved the desired balloon volume. These tags had a mean inflation volume of 114 cm 3 with a standard deviation of 1.2 cm 3 . Among the balloon tags injected with water at 18.3 °C, it was observed that the two-capsule balloon tags took the longest time to reach full inflation. In addition, the four-capsule balloon tags demonstrated a faster inflation start time, while the three-capsule balloon tags demonstrated a faster deflation start time. Overall, this approach proves to be effective for validating the performance of new technologies, improving turbine design, and making operational decisions to enhance fish passage conditions. Importantly, it serves as a valuable tool for research and field evaluations, aiding in the refinement of both the design and operation of hydraulic structures.

Classical cosmological collider physics and primordial features

Features in the inflationary landscape can inject extra energies to inflation models and produce on-shell particles with masses much larger than the Hubble scale of inflation. This possibility extends the energy reach of the program of cosmological collider physics, in which signals associated with these particles are generically Boltzmann-suppressed. Here we study the mechanisms of this classical cosmological collider in two categories of primordial features. In the first category, the primordial feature is classical oscillation, which includes the case of coherent oscillation of a massive field and the case of oscillatory features in the inflationary potential. The second category includes any sharp feature in the inflation model. All these classical features can excite unsuppressed quantum modes of other heavy fields which leave observational signatures in primordial non-Gaussianities, including the information about the particle spectra of these heavy degrees of freedom.

Post-inflationary enhancement of adiabatic perturbations in modular cosmology

We show that multi-field inflationary models with negligible turning in field space during inflation can lead to an effective sourcing of adiabatic from entropic perturbations afterthe end of inflation. We illustrate this general phenomenon with a detailed analysis of an inflationary model whose scalar potential is determined by modular invariance. Its entropic perturbations are frozen during inflation, but instead, they are converted into adiabatic perturbations in the first post-inflationary e-folds. The curvature power spectrum, giving rise to CMB fluctuations, reaches a novel and enhanced plateau in this process; we address the implications for the inflationary observables As , n s and r.

Axion cogenesis without isocurvature perturbations

Axion rotations can simultaneously explain the dark matter abundance and the baryon asymmetry of the Universe by kinetic misalignment and axiogenesis. We consider a scenario in which the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking field is as large as the Planck scale during inflation and the axion rotation is initiated by the inflaton-induced potential immediately after the end of inflation. This is a realization of the cogenesis scenario that is free of problems with domain walls and isocurvature perturbations thanks to large explicit Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking at the Planck scale during inflation. The baryon asymmetry can be more efficiently produced by leptoaxiogenesis, in which case the axion mass is predicted to be larger than O⁡(0.1) meV. We also discuss a UV complete model in supersymmetric theories.

Cosmic Signatures of Fundamental Physics (Final Technical Report)

Cosmology is the study of the history of the Universe. Major topics of current cosmology research include the nature of the dark energy which today is causing the Universe to accelerate, and the nature of cosmic inflation which is our best theory of the very early evolution of the Universe. Each of these topics can be explored with modern cosmological data, and rely on our theories of fundamental physics to operate. Research supported by this grant has led to advances in all these areas. We developed specific models of cosmic inflation and explored potential observations signatures. We explored observational constraints on the number of dimensions of space, which in certain modern theories can take in different values, and developed the specific “brane theories” of dark energy. The possibility that novel quantum effects (“quantum entanglement”) during cosmic inflation could lead to interesting observable phenomena was also explored.

Theoretical Constraints on Neutron-Mirror-Neutron Oscillation

Mirror models lead to the possibility that neutron (n) can oscillate into its mirror partner (n′), inspiring several experimental searches for this phenomenon. The condition for observability of this oscillation is a high degree of degeneracy between the n and n′ masses, which can be guaranteed if there is exact parity symmetry taking all particles to their mirror partners. However, consistency of these models with big-bang nucleosynthesis requires that this parity symmetry be broken in the early universe in a scenario called asymmetric inflation. In this paper, we study the consistency of an observable n−n′ oscillations signal with asymmetric inflation and derive various theoretical constraints. In particular, we find that the reheat temperature after inflation should lie below 2.5 TeV, and we predict a singlet fermion with a mass below 100 GeV. In simple models, where the right-handed neutrino is a mediator of baryon-number-violating interactions, we find that the light neutrinos are Dirac fermions with their masses arising radiatively through one-loop diagrams.

Cosmological gravitational particle production of massive spin-2 particles

The phenomenon of cosmological gravitational particle production (CGPP) is expected to occur during the period of inflation and the transition into a hot big bang cosmology. Particles may be produced even if they only couple directly to gravity, and so CGPP provides a natural explanation for the origin of dark matter. In this work we study the gravitational production of massive spin-2 particles assuming two different couplings to matter. We evaluate the full system of mode equations, including the helicity-0 modes, and by solving them numerically we calculate the spectrum and abundance of massive spin-2 particles that results from inflation on a hilltop potential. We conclude that CGPP might provide a viable mechanism for the generation of massive spin-2 particle dark matter during inflation, and we identify the favorable region of parameter space in terms of the spin-2 particle’s mass and the reheating temperature. As a secondary product of our work, we identify the conditions under which such theories admit ghost or gradient instabilities, and we thereby derive a generalization of the Higuchi bound to Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetimes.
