Geology of the Sklodowska Region, Lunar Farside

Investigation of an area on the lunar farside has resulted in a geologic map, development of a regional stratigraphic sequence, and interpretation of surface materials. Apollo 15 metric photographs were used in conjunction with photogrammetric techniques to produce a base map to which geologic units were later added. Geologic units were first delineated on the metric photographs and then transferred to the base map. Materials were defined and described from selected Lunar Orbiter and Apollo 15 metric, panoramic, and Hasselblad photographs on the basis of distinctive morphologic characteristics.

A short course in lunar geology for earth science instructors

A four-day short course in lunar geology was developed, leading to the publication of a primer in lunar geology. The course was offered to 22 sponsored participants (community college teachers) and to representatives from the Lunar Science Institute, Houston, Texas, and from the Educational Program Office of NASA-Ames, on April 25-28, 1974. A follow-up survey of the course participants was made in two steps: on the last day of the course, and one year later. In general, the participants felt that the course was well organized and that the speakers were effective. Most of the participants introduced some aspects of what they learned into their own teaching material. Finally, a well-panel display about 7 1/2 feet high and 16 feet long designed to acquaint the viewer with elementary facts of lunar geology was constructed and permanently installed at the Space Science Center of Foothill College.

Geologic information from satellite images

Extracting geologic information from ERTS and Skylab/EREP images is best done by a geologist trained in photo-interpretation. The information is at a regional scale, and three basic types are available: rock and soil, geologic structures, and landforms. Discrimination between alluvium and sedimentary or crystalline bedrock, and between units in thick sedimentary sequences is best, primarily because of topographic expression and vegetation differences. Discrimination between crystalline rock types is poor. Folds and fractures are the best displayed geologic features. They are recognizable by topographic expression, drainage patterns, and rock or vegetation tonal patterns. Landforms are easily discriminated by their familiar shapes and patterns. Several examples demonstrate the applicability of satellite images to tectonic analysis and petroleum and mineral exploration.

Skylab-4 visual observations project: Geological features of southwestern North America

Visual observations conducted by Skylab-4 crewmen on seven designated geological target areas and other targets of opportunity in parts of southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico were described. The experiments were designed to learn how effectively geologic features could be observed from orbit and what research information could be obtained from the observations when supported by ground studies. For the limited preparation they received, the crewmen demonstrated exceptional observational ability and produced outstanding photographic studies. They also formulated cogent opinions on how to improve future observational and photo-documentation techniques. From the photographs and other observations, it was possible to obtain significant research contributions to on-going field investigations. These contributions were integrated into other aspects of the ground investigations to the following topics: major faults, regional stratigraphy, occurrence of Precambrian crystalline rocks, mapping of Mesozoic volcanic rocks, regional geology.

Geology

Papers from private industry reporting applications of remote sensing to oil and gas exploration were presented. Digitally processed LANDSAT images were successfully employed in several geologic interpretations. A growing interest in digital image processing among the geologic user community was shown. The papers covered a wide geographic range and a wide technical and application range. Topics included: (1) oil and gas exploration, by use of radar and multisensor studies as well as by use of LANDSAT imagery or LANDSAT digital data, (2) mineral exploration, by mapping from LANDSAT and Skylab imagery and by LANDSAT digital processing, (3) geothermal energy studies with Skylab imagery, (4) environmental and engineering geology, by use of radar or LANDSAT and Skylab imagery, (5) regional mapping and interpretation, and digital and spectral methods.

A geological basis for the exploration of the planets: Introduction

The geological aspects of solar-system exploration were considered by first showing how geologic data are related to space science in general, and, second, by discussing the approach used in planetary geology. The origin, evolution, and distribution of matter condensed in the form of planets, satellites, comets, and asteroids were studied. Terrestrial planets, comets, and asteroids, and the solid satellites of the outer planets are discussed. Jupiter and Saturn, in particular, have satellites of prime importance. Geophysics, geochemistry, geodesy, cartography, and other disciplines concerned with the solid planets were all included.

Application of remote sensor data to geologic analysis of the Bonanza test site, Colorado

The author has identified the following significant results. The Hayden Pass (Orient mine area) includes 60 sq miles of the northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains and San Luis Valley in south-central Colorado. Based on interpretation of the remote sensor data, a geologic map was prepared and compared with a second geologic map, prepared from interpretation of both remote sensor data and field data. Comparison of the two maps gives an indication of the usefulness and reliability of the remote sensor data. The relative utility of color and color infrared photography was tested. The photography was used successfully to locate 75% of all faults in a portion of the geologically complex Bonanza volcanic center and to map and correctly identify 93% of all quaternary deposits and 62% of all areas of tertiary volcanic outcrop. Using a filter wheel photometer, more than 8,600 measurements of band reflectance of several sedimentary rocks were performed. The following conclusions were drawn: (1) the typical spectral reflectance curve shows a gradual increase with increasing wavelength; (2) the average band reflectance is about 0.20; and (3) within a formation, the minimum natural variation is about 0.04, or about 20% of the mean band reflectance.

Industrial use of geological remote sensing from space

NASA's remote sensing technology as exemplified by ERTS-1 and LANDSAT 2 developed far more rapidly than they could have been reasonably absorbed with proved results by geological industries. This under-utilization of available technology is due to the ingrown infrastructure of exploration and engineering programs and techniques, and the inherent indirectness and long term effectiveness of the application of remote sensing to geological needs. The value of four dimensional geologic maps and the capabilities of various sensors are discussed.

The usefulness of a geologic map as a product in geological research was discussed, and the volution of the geologic map of Maryland was illustrated. Remote sensing methods that have the most immediate application to the earth science aspects of the Chesapeake Bay region are listed.

The Aristarchus-Harbinger region of the moon - Surface geology and history from recent remote-sensing observations

Photographic and remote sensing observations made from earth and Apollo orbiting spacecraft were used to study the Aristarchus Plateau-Montes Harbinger region. The appearance of the area is described, and a delineation of geologic map units and their stratigraphic relationships is presented. Physical and chemical properties of certain of the geologic units are deduced, and the interrelationships between materials of volcanic and impact origin, including the effects of excavation, redistribution, and mixing of previously deposited materials by younger impact craters, are discussed. A detailed geologic history of the region is developed. Attention is directed to the anomalous red dark mantle on the plateau; it is thought that this layer consists of fine-grained block-free material containing a relatively large fraction of orange glass, and that this layer is probably of pyroclastic origin, laid down at some time during the Imbrian period of mare flooding.

Significant achievements in the Planetary Geology Program

Developments reported at a meeting of principal investigators for NASA's planetology geology program are summarized. Topics covered include: constraints on solar system formation; asteriods, comets, and satellites; constraints on planetary interiors; volatiles and regoliths; instrument development techniques; planetary cartography; geological and geochemical constraints on planetary evolution; fluvial processes and channel formation; volcanic processes; Eolian processes; radar studies of planetary surfaces; cratering as a process, landform, and dating method; and the Tharsis region of Mars. Activities at a planetary geology field conference on Eolian processes are reported and techniques recommended for the presentation and analysis of crater size-frequency data are included.

The state-of-the-art of active microwave remote sensors (altimeters, scatterometers and imagers) used in geologic applications is assessed and the ongoing radar geology activities within NASA, government agencies, industry, universities and foreign organizations is summarized. Plans for radar geology research and development and space flight missions are also outlined.

Geological mapping in the Amazon Jungle: A challenge to side-looking radar

A brief outline of the physical environment and vegetation characteristics peculiar to the Amazon Jungle is given to provide the background for the discussion of energy target interaction models. Examples of radar images of the central part of the jungle are used to illustrate a common approach to geologic mapping in this environment. During the initial phase of interpretation, the interaction phenomenon is evaluated and textural and tonal characteristics of the radar image are observed. Field checking of selected areas is the next phase of a geologic mapping program. Reinterpretation of radar images and auxiliary data (aerial photographs, Landsat images, and field data) is the last phase of geologic mapping.

Side-looking airborne radar image interpretation and geological mapping: Problems and results

Geological experiments and surveys conducted by BRGM and GDTA members to evaluate interest in SLAR image interpretation are summarized. Two surveys were selected for presentation: Les Vans (Massif central, France) and Guyana (South America). They have permitted a comparison between different types of SLAR: Goodyear, Motorola, JPL, and Vigie in term of lithological and structural applications. On the Les Vans test site conclusions reached concern radiometry, which is better on L-band imagery, polarization, HV being more useful than HH for geological mapping in an L-band system, wavelength and illuminations. Over Guyana, the use of Goodyear X-band SLAR enables satisfactory geological and structural mapping under heavy equatorial forest with cloud cover conditions. A differential program was developed for fracture filtering and image enhancement with a coherent light laser, and significant results were obtained.

Geologic considerations in underground coal mining system design

Geologic characteristics of coal resources which may impact new extraction technologies are identified and described to aid system designers and planners in their task of designing advanced coal extraction systems for the central Appalachian region. These geologic conditions are then organized into a matrix identified as the baseline mine concept. A sample region, eastern Kentucy is analyzed using both the developed baseline mine concept and the traditional geologic investigative approach.

Spectroscopic remote sensing for geological applications

Remote sensing is being used with increasing frequency in the development of geologic maps and in the exploration process. Spectral data from airborne and spaceborne multispectral scanners provide information on rock type and vegetation stress, important in geologic applications. Emphasis is now being placed on direct identification of materials rather than discrimination among geologic units. To do this, higher spectral resolution systems with wider spectral coverage than currently available are required. Imaging spectroscopy in the 0.4 - 14 microns region appears to be the answer.

The intercrater plains of Mercury and the Moon: Their nature, origin and role in terrestrial planet evolution. Geologic mapping of Mercury and the Moon

The geologic framework of the intercrater plains on Mercury and the Moon as determined through geologic mapping is presented. The strategies used in such mapping are discussed first. Then, because the degree of crater degradation is applied to both mapping and crater statistics, the correlation of degradation classification of lunar and Mercurian craters is thoroughly addressed. Different imaging systems can potentially affect this classification, and are therefore also discussed. The techniques used in mapping Mercury are discussed in Section 2, followed by presentation of the Geologic Map of Mercury in Section 3. Material units, structures, and relevant albedo and color data are discussed therein. Preliminary conclusions regarding plains' origins are given there. The last section presents the mapping analyses of the lunar intercrater plains, including tentative conclusions of their origin.
