Types and method of attaching electrodes in recording electrocardiogram during space flights
Literature survey on joint thermal conductance between bolted plates and experimental work on normal stress distribution under boltheads and interface stress distribution
Joints between two rigid materials lined with velcro fabric can now be broken with ease using any one of several methods. Three such methods are applicable to either hook or loop fabric.
Analysis of bolt loads by ultrasonic techniques
Investigation of variables affecting joint preload properties of installed structural bolts and nuts used in fabrication and construction of spacecraft components
Ultrasonic, pulse echo interferometric method for analyzing bolt preloads
Metallic composities can be fabricated in one-step process in which mixture is directionally solidified. Phase-reinforced eutectic alloys have superior high-temperature mechanical properties.
Various technological processes to achieve lightweight reliable joining systems for structural elements of aircraft and spacecraft are considered. Joining methods, combinations of them, and nondestructive evaluation and quality assurance are emphasized.
Double-hex bolthead allows bolts of high strength corrosion-resistant steel (CRES) to be made in diameters up to 1-1/4 in. Design allows 12-point tension heads to be cold formed to retain required minimum tensile strength of 220,000 psi and to retain high fracture strength.
Using a series approach and the Muskhelishvili formulation in the two-dimensional theory of elasticity, stress-intensity factors K are derived for problems in which cracks emanate radially from the boundary of an arbitrarily loaded internal circular hole in an infinite plate. Numerical values are obtained for K(I) and K(II) for radial cracks from a hole containing a loose-fitted pin or rivet that is pulled perpendicular to the crack direction in the plane of the plate. The method is a general one for determining K for a set of symmetrically emanating radial cracks for a variety of concentrated or distributed tractions on the circular hole.
Adhesive bonding reduces likelihood of skin failure due to excessive forces or torques by utilizing an adhesive to honeycomb skin. Concept is useful in other applications of composites such as aircraft, automobiles, and home appliances.
Simple articulating linkage secures solar panels into supporting framework. Five element linkage collapses into W-shape for easy placement into framework, then expands to form rectangle of same dimensions as those of panel.
Addition of PTFE pressure pad increases utility of hexagonal socket wrench. Pad presses against opposing inside socket walls, causing frictional force that retains socket-head screw against gravitational and handling forces. Developed for spacecraft repairs, tool is useful wherever tight clearance prevents insertion or removal of screw by hand.
Formed-in-place staple provides positive mechanical lock. Post-supported, advanced carbon/carbon standoff panels, currently under consideration as alternate thermal protection system for Shuttle orbiter, locking feature applicable to temperatures of 1,600 degrees F (870 degrees C) and higher and employable after panel installed, resulting in blind application. Blind-side locking technique employs wire staple inserted into grooves in post, formed in place by ramped portion of post grooves. This splays out wire ends that move into castellated end of grommet, mechanically locking post and grommet against relative rotation. Splayed ends provide mechanical lock to prevent wire from falling out.
Attaching device combines fast connection and disconnection with high strength. T-shaped stud engages groove in receptacle after one-quarter turn. Further turning tightens nut on receptacle. Like quarter-turn attaching devices, connected and disconnected quickly. Like threaded devices, adjusted to desired preload, withstand high loads, and accommodate wide range of grip lengths.
Proposed set of tools neatly dimple cup washer to prevent screw from turning in mounting hole. Two dimples required, one leaning outward to grip recess in mounting hole and one leaning inward to grip recess in screw-head. Tools do not cause cracks and tears. Substitute die-forming process for hammer-and-center-punch process. De-forming process requires less skill and gives results of greater quality and consistency.
