Machine Learning-Driven Optimization of Building Enclosures for Moisture Durability and Thermal Performance

The design of moisture-durable building enclosures with low embodied carbon often involves an iterative process of selecting the materials for the specific exposure conditions to meet the performance requirements. While hygrothermal simulations are commonly used to evaluate moisture durability, they often require advanced expertise for proper implementation. Machine learning (ML) provides a promising alternative by streamlining the design process and minimizing the reliance on complex simulations. This study presents a machine learning-based approach for predicting moisture durability in residential wall assemblies. The ML model was trained to estimate the mold index and maximum moisture content of various layers under typical exposure conditions. The model achieved a high predictive accuracy, with a coefficient of determination (R²) exceeding 0.90 when compared to traditional hygrothermal simulations on materials that were not part of training the ML model. Building on these results, the ML model was developed into a practical tool for optimizing wall assembly designs. This tool allows users to automatically optimize material selections based on energy, moisture, and carbon performance criteria. By incorporating multi-objective optimization, the tool identifies configurations that minimize embodied carbon while maintaining moisture safety and code-compliant thermal performance. Additionally, it provides insights into how material choices influence assembly durability, energy efficiency, and carbon reduction. The tool will be implemented in the Building Science Advisor (BSA) to enhance its performance and provide more granularity on the results. This research highlights the potential for ML-driven tools to simplify the design of high-performance building enclosures, offering architects and engineers a faster, more efficient way to balance critical performance factors.

Carbon Emissions in a Typical New Production Home: A Case Study

This report is intended to serve as a foundational document for residential construction executives and leadership teams to understand how a typical home currently performs relative to building decarbonization goals set for 2030 and 2050. The intent is to help homebuilders benchmark their current performance and better understand the largest sources of carbon emissions in their homes. There is a need to understand and assess current performance against net zero carbon goals to define achievable paths forward. This case study highlights opportunities for innovation and carbon reduction through advanced technologies and material choices.

Methods of Soft Tissue Emulsification Using a Mechanism of Ultrasonic Atomization Inside Gas or Vapor Cavities and Associated Systems and Devices

The present technology is directed to methods of soft tissue emulsification using a mechanism of ultrasonic atomization inside gas or vapor cavities, and associated systems and devices. In several embodiments, for example, a method of non-invasively treating tissue includes pulsing ultrasound energy from the ultrasound source toward the target site in tissue. The ultrasound source is configured to emit high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) waves. The target site comprises a pressure-release interface of a gas or vapor cavity located within the tissue. The method continues by generating shock waves in the tissue to induce a lesion in the tissue at the target site. The method additionally includes characterizing the lesion based on a degree of at least one of a mechanical or thermal ablation of the tissue.

Flux-split algorithms for flows with non-equilibrium chemistry and vibrational relaxation

The present consideration of numerical computation methods for gas flows with nonequilibrium chemistry thermodynamics gives attention to an equilibrium model, a general nonequilibrium model, and a simplified model based on vibrational relaxation. Flux-splitting procedures are developed for the fully-coupled inviscid equations encompassing fluid dynamics and both chemical and internal energy-relaxation processes. A fully coupled and implicit large-block structure is presented which embodies novel forms of flux-vector split and flux-difference split algorithms valid for nonequilibrium flow; illustrative high-temperature shock tube and nozzle flow examples are given.

Impact of Energy Gain and Subsystem Characteristics on Fusion Propulsion Performance

Rapid transport of large payloads and human crews throughout the solar system requires propulsion systems having very high specific impulse (I(sub sp) > 10(exp 4) to 10(exp 5) s). It also calls for systems with extremely low mass-power ratios (alpha < 10(exp -1) kg/kW). Such low alpha are beyond the reach of conventional power-limited propulsion, but may be attainable with fusion and other nuclear concepts that produce energy within the propellant. The magnitude of energy gain must be large enough to sustain the nuclear process while still providing a high jet power relative to the massive energy-intensive subsystems associated with these concepts. This paper evaluates the impact of energy gain and subsystem characteristics on alpha. Central to the analysis are general parameters that embody the essential features of any 'gain-limited' propulsion power balance. Results show that the gains required to achieve alpha = 10(exp -1) kg/kW with foreseeable technology range from approximately 100 to over 2000, which is three to five orders of magnitude greater than current fusion state of the arL Sensitivity analyses point to the parameters exerting the most influence for either: (1) lowering a and improving mission performance or (2) relaxing gain requirements and reducing demands on the fusion process. The greatest impact comes from reducing mass and increasing efficiency of the thruster and subsystems downstream of the fusion process. High relative gain, through enhanced fusion processes or more efficient drivers and processors, is also desirable. There is a benefit in improving driver and subsystem characteristics upstream of the fusion process, but it diminishes at relative gains > 100.

Miniature reciprocating heat pumps and engines

The present invention discloses a miniature thermodynamic device that can be constructed using standard micro-fabrication techniques. The device can be used to provide cooling, generate power, compress gases, pump fluids and reduce pressure below ambient (operate as a vacuum pump). Embodiments of the invention relating to the production of a cooling effect and the generation of electrical power, change the thermodynamic state of the system by extracting energy from a pressurized fluid. Energy extraction is attained using an expansion process, which is as nearly isentropic as possible for the appropriately chosen fluid. An isentropic expansion occurs when a compressed gas does work to expand, and in the disclosed embodiments, the gas does work by overcoming either an electrostatic or a magnetic force.
