Hollow-cone illumination techniques, using an annular objective aperture located behind back focal plane of objective lens, increase image contrast and minimize chromatic aberrations.
Friction experiments were conducted in air with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) sliding on aluminum single crystals. Mechanical scoring of the crystals with (110) and (100) orientations was observed with a single pass of the PTFE slider. No scoring was observed on the (111). The degree of scoring of the crystals is related to the hardness, with the hardest surface (111) showing no damage and the softest surface (110) showing the most severe scoring. Scoring is caused by work-hardened pieces of aluminum which, as a consequence of the adhesion between PTFE and aluminum, were pulled out of the bulk and became embedded in the PTFE polymer.

Apollo 15 green glass droplets and related forms show a variety of low velocity impact features which occurred at the time of formation of the droplets. Composite forms, which consist of a crystallized core on which mounds of glass adhere, indicate a sequence of core formation and crystallization, followed by impact of molten droplets. The complicated and time dependent texture and morphology of the green glass forms are best explained by formation in a volcanic lava fountain rather than by meteorite impact.
SEM photographs were taken of euhedral olivine grains from the Murchison C2 chondrite and several terrestrial and lunar occurrences. In general, the crystal faces of the meteorite grains are rough and uneven, with irregular growth patterns. They are very similar to crystal faces on terrestrial olivine grains that formed by sublimation from a vapor phase. They are very different from the relatively smooth and featureless surfaces of magmatic olivine crystals that precipitated from igneous melts. Qualitatively, the surface morphology of the crystal supports the contention that many euhedral crystals of olivine in C2 meteorites condensed from a gas phase.
