Status of the Down-Blending of Irradiated IGR Graphite Fuel in Kazakhstan

Dry processing remains the primary solution for managing the down-blending of irradiated IGR HEU fuel. Several tasks have been initiated and completed to achieve this, including lab modernization, lab-scale and full-scale testing, designing and fabricating an in-paddle mixing drum, and commissioning both a down-blending system and a crushing and milling system. Additionally, a testing and training center was modernized, the equipment was successfully commissioned, and the IGR HEU fuel blocks were repackaged into daily containers. The training of operators and the construction of a new down-blending facility are tasks that will need to be completed in the near future. The progress in these areas continues to validate that the proposed method for down-blending irradiated HEU graphite fuel, followed by cementation of the down-blended material for permanent disposition, appears to be achievable.

ECAR-6564 MARVEL Project Primary Coolant System ASME BPVC Section III Division 5 Design by Analysis

This report demonstrates that the MARVEL Reactor Primary Coolant Boundary (herein referred to as the Primary Coolant System, or PCS) is designed to meet ASME BPVC Section III Division 5 elevated temperature service design-by-analysis criteria. The analysis approach that delineates division of responsibilities to meet project objectives is discussed herein. In short, Design and Service Level A, B, and C code calculations are detailed in ECAR-6580 for the majority of the PCS with complex geometry, while the Lower Downcomers, Bottom Head, and Reactor Core Barrel are analyzed in ANL-23/56. Service Level D code calculations are detailed in this document.

Radiation Effects on Network on Chips (NoC) Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project

This project was motivated by State-of-the-Art (SOTA) technology that incorporates Network on Chips (NOC) for efficient data communication across the various computer kernels. For example, on the AMD Versal Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), an NoC has been incorporated for fast data communication from the programmable logic and other computer kernels (processing system, adaptable intelligence engines, etc.). The radiation effects on the legacy technology of this FPGA, such as the programmable logic, are well understood, and established methods exist to measure cross-sections when new families/generations are released; however, newly incorporated technologies, such as the NoC, are not fully understood and could introduce new failure points into the mission space.

Proof-of-Concept for Sensor Modeling in MOOSE for the Design of Autonomous Nuclear Reactor Control

Autonomous operation is essential for the deployment of microreactors and fission batteries, both in terrestrial and space applications. However, prototypes of microreactors and fission batteries do not exist yet, and even the design space has not been narrowed down conclusively, making the instrumentation and control system design difficult. For this reason, there is a need for flexible computational capabilities to create a numerical stand-in of potential microreactor and fission battery designs. The latter can be used to design and test control strategies to support autonomous operations. In this paper, we describe the initial implementation of a pluggable sensor system for the easy implementation of realistic sensor models in the multiphysics object-oriented simulation environment (MOOSE) framework. This new capability will enable MOOSE users to create a numerical stand-in of microreactors and fission batteries, ultimately allowing them to easily test new control algorithms, and instrumentation strategies for advanced systems in the design phase
