Anomalous minima in Cen X-3.

Report of an observation made with a rocket-borne argon-methane proportional counter, which was equipped with a 'Mylar' window and was sensitive to X rays in the range from 0.2 to 10 keV. During a scan of the galactic plane, the detector passed directly over the location of Cen X-3 at a roll rate of 1 deg per second. An extended minimum of X-ray flux was observed. It is concluded that the anomalous effect is intrinsic to the source.

Angular distributions of electrons of energy E sub e greater than 0.06 MeV in the Jovian magnetosphere

The results of an angular distribution analysis of the electron intensity data recorded near Jupiter for the period from 26 November to 14 December 1973 are presented. The data were from three directional particle detectors with effective integral electron energy thresholds of 0.06, 0.55, and 5.0 Mev, respectively. It was found that the central core of the magnetosphere, within 12 Jupiter radii, is dominated by pitch angle distributions strongly peaked at alpha = 90 deg, while the region from 12 to 25 Jupiter radii shows bidirectional and approximately equal maxima at alpha = 0 and 180 deg. Bidirectional angular distributions in the magnetodisc out to the radius of the magnetopause strongly suggest quasi-trapping on closed field lines as the predominant situation. Substantial field aligned, unidirectional streaming was detected on only two occasions. No distinctive effects on angular distributions were discerned near the L-shells of satellites.

Angular distributions of electrons of energy greater than 0.06 MeV in the Jovian magnetosphere

Measurements of the angular distribution of electron intensity in the Jupiter magnetosphere were made by the University of Iowa experiment on Pioneer 10. The data were from three directional particle detectors with effective integral threshold of 0.06, 0.55 and 0.5 MeV respectively. It was discovered that the central core of the magnetosphere for radial distances less than 12 Jovian radii is dominated by pitch angle distributions strongly peaked at alpha = 90 degrees, while the region of radial distances 12-25 Jovian radii shows bidirectional and approximately equal maxima at alpha = 0 and 180 degrees. Substantial field-aligned streaming was detected on two occasions, each of about 1 hour duration. No distinctive effects on angular distributions were observed near the L shells of satellites.

A dc amplifier for nuclear particle measurement

A monolithic preamplifier-postamplifier combination has been developed for use with solid state particle detectors. The direct coupled amplifiers employ interdigitated n-channel JFET's, diodes, and diffused resistors. The circuits developed demonstrate the feasibility of matching the performance of existing discrete component designs. The fabrication procedures for the monolithic amplifier fabrication are presented and the results of measurements on a limited number of sample amplifiers are given.

Probing the magnetsophere with artificial electron beams

An analysis is conducted of the University of Minnesota Electron Echo experiments, which so far have included five sounding rocket experiments. The concept of the Echo experiment is to inject electron beam pulses from a rocket into the ionosphere at altitudes in the range from 100 to 300 km. The electrons move to the conjugate hemisphere following magnetic field lines and return on neighboring field lines to the neighborhood of the rocket where the pulses may be detected and analyzed. Attention is given to the detection and analysis of echoes, the structure of echoes, and the Echo V experiment. The Echo V experiment showed clearly that detection of remote echo beams by atmospheric fluorescence using low light level TV system is not a viable technique. A future experiment is to use throw-away detectors for direct remote echo detection.

Cosmic ray neutrino tests for heavier weak bosons and cosmic antimatter

A program for using high energy neutrino astronomy with large neutrino detectors to directly test for the existence of heavier weak intermediate vector bosons (ivb) and cosmic antimatter is described. Such observations can provide a direct test of baryon symmetric cosmologies. Changes in the total cross section for nu(N) yields mu(X) due to additional propagators are discussed and higher mass resonances in the annihilation channel bar-nu sub e e(-) yields X are analyzed. The annihilation channel is instrumental in the search for antimatter, partcularly if heavier IVB's exist.

Exosat/Delta - Demonstrated short-term backup launcher capability through international cooperation

The instrumentation, performance parameters, Delta launch implementation, and development program of the Exosat, launched in February 1983 are described. The X ray satellite was integrated into the Delta vehicle over a three month period, and will survey mainly previously observed X ray objects by directing its detectors at them just before they are occulted by the moon. The 120 kg science package, powered by 260 W of power from solar panels, include low- and medium-energy imaging devices. The spacecraft was originally intended for Ariane launch, but scheduling conflicts, plus the need for a polar-type orbit, dictated the use of the Western Space and Missile Center. Maintenance of Delta compatibility throughout the development of the Exosat facilitated the transfer of launch vehicles, as did full existing documentation of the spacecraft and familiarity between the ESA and NASA managers of the development and launch programs, respectively.

Report of the Asilomar 3 LDR Workshop

The conclusions and recommendations of the workshop held to study technology development issues critical to the Large Deployable Reflector (LDR) are summarized. LDR is to be a dedicated, orbiting, astronomical observatory, operating at wavelengths from 30 to 1000 microns, a spectral region where the Earth's atmosphere is almost completely opaque. Because it will have a large, segmented, passively cooled aperture, LDR addresses a wide range of technology areas. These include lightweight, low cost, structural composite reflector panels, primary support structures, wavefront sensing and adaptive optics, thermal background management, and integrated vibration and pointing control systems. The science objectives for LDR present instrument development challenges for coherent and direct arrayed detectors which can operate effectively at far infrared and submillimeter wavelengths, and for sub-Kelvin cryogenic systems.

Ion flux oscillations associated with a radially polarized transverse Pc 5 magnetic pulsation

The AMPTE CCE spacecraft observed a transverse Pc 5 magnetic pulsation (period of about 200 s) at 2155-2310 UT on November 20, 1985, at a radial distance of 5.7 - 7.0 earth radii, at a magnetic latitude of 1.2 - 19 deg, and near 1300 magnetic local time. The magnetic pulsation exhibits properties consistent with a standing Alfven wave with a second-harmonic standing structure along the ambient magnetic field. The amplitude and the phase of the flux pulsation are found to be a function of the particle detector look direction and the particle energy. The observed energy dependence of the shift is interpreted as the result of a drift-bounce resonance of the ions with the wave. From this interpretation it follows that the wave propagated westward with an azimuthal wave number of approximately 100. Thus the study demonstrates that particle data can be useful for determining the spatial structure of some types of ULF waves.

256x256 switched-FET multiplexer for spaceborne astronomical applications

A novel cryogenic design of a source follower per detector (SFD) direct readout multiplexer is demonstrated. This design has proven to be a good prototype for the development of new low-noise large-area cryogenic multiplexers. In the absence of clocking noise, the readout demonstrates as low as about 30 electrons of rms read noise. There is still an excess noise component feeding through when the array is clocked, which manifests itself only at the lower temperatures. The shape of this component is dependent on a number of the bias voltages, and especially on the temperature of the chip. Analysis of the noise spectral density of the unit cell under various bias conditions shows that there is an excess spectral noise component at the lower temperatures.

Initial OSSE Sky Survey Observation: Deep Survey in the Virgo Region

The OSSE Virgo survey covered about 1% of the sky, using eight weeks of observing time on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, and was performed in conjunction with the EGRET and COMPTEL instruments on CGRO. A fundamental aspect of the survey was the development of data reduction techniques for the scanning data from the OSSE detectors. A direct algebraic approach for spatially deconvolving the data was developed. For the survey work, no background observations isolated from the survey region were acquired, unlike normal discrete source observations. The survey, reduction method covers the mapped region with a grid of pixels, and estimates the flux from each pixel by least-squares agreement with the data, assuming positivity constraints. This technique has led to the detection of compact sources at hard X-ray energies within the Virgo region, and the OSSE survey studies have been extended to the south galactic pole and north Ecliptic pole, with similar analysis techniques.

SEXTANT X-Ray Pulsar Navigation Demonstration: Initial On-Orbit Results

Millisecond pulsars (MSPs) are rapidly rotating neutron stars that appear to pulsate across the electromagnetic spectrum. Some MSPs have long-term timing stability that rivals that of atomic clocks. Pulse arrival phase can be predicted with great accuracy at any reference point in the Solar System through use of a pulsar timing model on a spacecraft. Comparing observed phase to predictions gives information that may be used in a navigation process. Why X-rays? Some stable MSPs have conveniently detectable X-ray emissions. X-rays are immune to interstellar dispersion effects thought to limit radio pulsar timing models. Highly directional compact detectors possible.
