Peierls transition, ferroelectricity, and spin-singlet formation in monolayer VOI 2

Using ab initio density functional theory and single-orbital Hubbard model calculations via the density matrix renormalization group method, we systematically studied the monolayer VOI 2 with a 3d 1 electronic configuration. Our phonon calculations indicate that the orthorhombic Pmm2 FE-II phase is the most likely ground state, involving a ferroelectric (FE) distortion along the a axis and V-V dimerization along the b axis. Specifically, the “pseudo Jahn-Teller” effect caused by the coupling between empty V (d xz/yz and d 3z 2 -r 2 ) and O 2p states is proposed as the mechanism that stabilizes the FE distortion from the paraelectric phase. Moreover, the half-filled metallic d xy band displays a Peierls instability along the b axis, inducing a V-V dimerization. Additionally, we found very short-range antiferromagnetic coupling along the V-V chain due to the formation of nearly decoupled spin singlets in the ground state.

Anisotropic quantum Hall states in the presence of interactions with fourfold rotational symmetry

We study the effects of anisotropic interactions in the quantum Hall effect in the presence of a fourfold discrete rotational (C 4 ) symmetry. Employing the density matrix renormalization group technique on an infinite cylinder geometry (iDMRG), we calculate the anisotropy response of the Laughlin state at ν = 1/3 and the composite-Fermi liquid (CFL) state at ν = 1/2. We find that the anisotropy transferred from the interaction potential to the ν = 1/3 state is stronger when compared with the complementary case of an anisotropic band. Further, the strength of anisotropy reduces as the interaction is made shorter ranged. Quite surprisingly, at ν = 1/2, the deformation in the CF Fermi surface changes sign as the interaction range is reduced. Our results imply that the short-distance and long-distance parts of the interaction potential have opposite effects on the CFL state in the presence of C 4 -symmetric anisotropy.

Abelian SU(N) 1 chiral spin liquids on the square lattice

In the physics of the Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) effect, a zoo of Abelian topological phases can be obtained by varying the magnetic field. Aiming to reach the same phenomenology in spin-like systems, in this work we propose a family of SU(N)-symmetric models in the fundamental representation, on the square lattice with short-range interactions restricted to triangular units, a natural generalization for arbitrary N of an SU(3) model studied previously where time-reversal symmetry is broken explicitly. Guided by the recent discovery of SU(2) 1 and SU(3) 1 chiral spin liquids (CSL) on similar models we search for topological SU(N) 1 CSL in some range of the Hamiltonian parameters via a combination of complementary numerical methods such as exact diagonaliza- tions (ED), infinite density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) and infinite Projected Entangled Pair State (iPEPS). Extensive ED on small (periodic and open) clusters up to N = 10 and an innovative SU(N)-symmetric version of iDMRG to compute entanglement spectra on (infinitely-long) cylinders in all topological sectors pro- vide unambiguous signatures of the SU(N) 1 character of the chiral liquids. An SU(4)-symmetric chiral PEPS, constructed in a manner similar to its SU(2) and SU(3) analogs, is shown to give a good variational ansatz of the N = 4 ground state, with chiral edge modes originating from the PEPS holographic bulk-edge correspondence. Finally, we discuss the possible observation of such Abelian CSL in ultracold atom setups where the possibility of varying N provides a tuning parameter similar to the magnetic field in the physics of the FQH effect.

Magnetization dynamics fingerprints of an excitonic condensate t 2 g 4 magnet

The competition between spin-orbit coupling (SOC) λ and electron-electron interaction U leads to a plethora of novel states of matter, extensively studied in the context of t 2 g 4 and t 2 g 5 materials, such as ruthenates and iridates. Excitonic magnets—the antiferromagnetic state of bounded electron-hole pairs-are prominent examples of phenomena driven by those competing energy scales. Interestingly, recent theoretical studies predicted that excitonic magnets can be found in the ground state of SOC t 2 g 4 Hubbard models. Here we present a detailed computational study of the magnetic excitations in that excitonic magnet, employing one-dimensional chains (via density matrix renormalization group) and small two-dimensional clusters (via Lanczos). Specifically, first we show that the low-energy spectrum is dominated by a dispersive (acoustic) magnonic mode, with extra features arising from the λ = 0 state in the phase diagram. Second, and more importantly, we found a novel magnetic excitation forming a high-energy optical mode with the highest intensity at wave-vector q → 0 . In the excitonic condensation regime at large U , we also have found a novel high-energy π mode composed solely of orbital excitations. Overall, these features do not appear all together in any of the neighboring states in the phase diagram and thus constitute unique fingerprints of the t 2 g 4 excitonic magnet, of importance in the analysis of neutron and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments.

Ferromagnetism and doublon localization in a Wannier-Hubbard chain

We derive a “Wannier-Hubbard” model consisting of an array of overlapping atomic orbitals interacting via a local Coulomb interaction. Transforming to an orthogonal Wannier basis set, the resulting Hamiltonian displays long-range hopping and interactions, with new terms such as correlated hopping and ferromagnetic direct exchange, among others. We numerically study the one-dimensional version of the model at half-filling using the density matrix renormalization group method, unveiling a rich phase diagram as a function of the interaction U and the overlap s with metallic and ferromagnetic phases separated by a ferrimagnetic region. Our results indicate a path toward understanding emergent phases under pressure and beyond standard model Hamiltonians.

Quantum spin liquid with emergent chiral order in the triangular-lattice Hubbard model

The interplay between spin frustration and charge fluctuation gives rise to an exotic quantum state in the intermediate-interaction regime of the half-filled triangular-lattice Hubbard model, while the nature of the state is under debate. Using the density matrix renormalization group with SU(2) spin ⓍU(1) charge symmetries implemented, we study the triangular-lattice Hubbard model defined on the long cylinder geometry up to circumference W=6. A gapped quantum spin liquid, with on-site interaction 9≲U/t≲10.75, is identified between the metallic and the antiferromagnetic Mott insulating phases. In particular, we find that this spin liquid develops a robust long-range spin scalar-chiral correlation as the system length L increases, which unambiguously unveils the spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. In addition, the degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum supports symmetry fractionalization and spinon edge modes in the obtained ground state. The possible origin of chiral order in this intermediate spin liquid and its relation to the rotonlike excitations have also been discussed.

Frustrated mixed-spin ladders: Evidence for a bond-order wave phase between rung-singlet and Haldane phases

In frustrated spin ladders, the interplay of frustration and correlations leads to the familiar Haldane (H) and rung-singlet (RS) phases. The nature of the transition between these two phases is still under debate. In this paper we tackle this issue using tools of quantum information theory. We consider frustrated mixed-spin-(1, 1/2) ladders with antiferromagnetic leg, rung and diagonal couplings, and calculate various quantities, such as the entanglement entropy (EE), the Schmidt gap, and the level degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum (ES). We use two numerical techniques, the infinite time-evolving block decimation (iTEBD) and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). We demonstrate that there exists an intermediate phase in which the ES levels do not exhibit the characteristic degeneracies of the H and RS phases. To understand the underlying physics in this phase, here we investigate short-range spin correlations along legs, rungs and diagonals and show that in this intermediate phase long-wavelength modulations occur, akin to bond-order waves.

Nature of quantum spin liquids of the S = 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice: A parallel DMRG study

Here we study the ground-state properties of the quantum spin liquid (QSL) phases of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with nearest- (J 1 ), next-nearest- (J 2 ), and third-neighbor (J 3 ) interactions by using density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. By combining parallel DMRG with SU(2) spin rotational symmetry, we are able to obtain accurate results on large cylinders with length up to L x =48 and circumference L y =6–12. Our results suggest that the QSL phase of the J 1 -J 2 Heisenberg model is gapped which is characterized by the absence of gapless mode, short-range spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlations. In the presence of J 3 interaction, we find that a new critical QSL with a single gapless mode emerges. While both spin-spin and scalar chiral-chiral correlations are short-ranged, dimer-dimer correlations are quasi-long-ranged which decays as a power-law at long distances.

Hund bands in spectra of multiorbital systems

Spectroscopy experiments are routinely used to characterize the behavior of strongly correlated systems. An in-depth understanding of the different spectral features is thus essential. Here, we show that the spectrum of the multiorbital Hubbard model exhibits unique Hund bands that occur at energies given only by the Hund coupling J H , as distinct from the Hubbard satellites following the interaction U. We focus on experimentally relevant single-particle and optical spectra that we calculate for a model related to iron chalcogenide ladders. The calculations are performed via the density-matrix renormalization group and Lanczos methods. Finally, the generality of the implications is verified by considering a generic multiorbital model within dynamical mean-field theory.

Quantum order by disorder in frustrated spin nanotubes

Here we investigate quantum order by disorder in a frustrated spin nanotube formed by wrapping a J1–J2 Heisenberg model at 45° around a cylinder. Using Schwinger boson theory and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), we have computed the ground-state phase diagram to reveal a Z2 phase in which collinear spin stripes form a right- or left-handed helix around the nanotube. We have derived an analytic estimate for the critical η c = J 1 /2J 2 of the Z 2 -helical phase transition, which is in agreement with the DMRG results. By evaluating the entanglement spectrum and nonlocal string order parameters we discuss the topology of the Z 2 -helical phase.

Block Mott insulating state induced by next-nearest-neighbor hopping in the S = 3 2 zigzag chain BaCoTe 2 O 7

Quasi-one-dimensional correlated electronic multiorbital systems with either ladder or chain geometries continue attracting considerable interest due to their complex electronic phases arising from the interplay of the hopping matrix, the crystal-field splitting, the electronic correlations (Hubbard repulsion U and Hund coupling J H ), and strong quantum fluctuations. Recently, the intriguing cobalt zigzag chain system BaCoTe 2 ⁢ O 7 , with electronic density n=7, was prepared experimentally. Here, we systematically study the electronic and magnetic properties of this quasi-one-dimensional compound from the theoretical perspective. Based on first-principles density functional theory calculations, strongly anisotropic one-dimensional electronic Co 3⁢d bands were found near the Fermi level. By evaluating the relevant hopping amplitudes, we provide the magnitude and origin of the nearest-neighbor (NN) and next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) hopping matrices in BaCoTe 2 ⁢ O 7 . With this information, we constructed a three-orbital electronic Hubbard model for this zigzag chain system, and studied two cases: with only a NN hopping matrix, and with NN plus NNN hopping matrices. Introducing the Hubbard and Hund couplings and studying the model via the density matrix renormalization group method, we constructed the ground-state phase diagram. A robust staggered ↑ - ↓ - ↑ - ↓ antiferromagnetic (AFM) region was found when only the NN hopping matrix in the chain direction was employed. However, for the realistic case where the NNN hopping matrix is also included, the dominant state becomes instead a block AFM ↑ - ↑ - ↓ - ↓ order, in agreement with experiments. The system displays Mott insulator characteristics with three half-filled orbitals, when the block AFM order is stable. In conclusion, our results for BaCoTe 2 ⁢O 7 provide guidance to experimentalists and theorists working on this zigzag one-dimensional chain and related materials.

Spinon continuum in the Heisenberg quantum chain compound Sr 2 ⁢V 3 ⁢O 9

Magnetic excitations in the spin chain candidate Sr 2 ⁢V 3 ⁢O 9 have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal sample. A spinon continuum with a bandwidth of ~22 meV is observed along the chain formed by alternating magnetic V 4+ and nonmagnetic V 5+ ions, which reveals the importance of the orbital degree of freedom in determining the chain axis as identified by prior electronic structure calculations. Incipient magnetic Bragg peaks due to weak ferromagnetic interchain couplings emerge when approaching the magnetic transition at T N ~ 5.3 K, while the excitations remain gapless within the instrumental resolution. Comparisons to the Bethe ansatz, density matrix renormalization group calculations, and effective field theories confirm Sr 2 ⁢V 3 ⁢O 9 as a host of weakly coupled S = 1/2 chains dominated by antiferromagnetic intrachain interactions of ~7.1(1) meV.

Classical dynamics of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin ladder

We employ a classical limit grounded in SU(4) coherent states to investigate the temperature-dependent dynamical spin structure factor of the S = 1/2 ladder consisting of weakly coupled dimers. By comparing the outcomes of this classical approximation with density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization calculations in finite size ladders, we demonstrate that the classical dynamics offers an accurate approximation across the entire temperature range when the interdimer coupling is weak and a good approximation in the high temperature regime even when the interdimer coupling is strong. This agreement is achieved after appropriately rescaling the temperature axis and renormalizing expectation values to satisfy a quantum sum rule. Here, we anticipate the method will be particularly effective when applied to 2D and 3D lattices composed of weakly-coupled dimers, situations that remain challenging for alternative numerical methods.

Luttinger liquid phase in the Aubry-André Hubbard chain

We study the interplay between an on-site Hubbard repulsion and quasiperiodic potential in one-dimensional fermion chains using the density matrix renormalization group. We find that, at half-filling, the quasiperiodic potential can destroy the Mott gap, leading to a metallic Luttinger liquid phase between the gapped Mott insulator at strong repulsion and localized gapless Aubry- André insulator at strong quasiperiodic potential. Away from half-filing, the metallic phase of the interacting model persists to larger critical strengths of the potential than in the non-interacting case, suggesting interaction-stabilized delocalization at finite doping. Here, we characterize the Luttinger liquid through its charge and spin correlations, structure factors, and entanglement entropy.

Influence of extended interactions on spin dynamics in one-dimensional cuprates

Quasi-one-dimensional (1D) materials provide a unique platform for understanding the importance and influence of extended interactions on the physics of strongly correlated systems due to their relative structural simplicity and the existence of powerful theoretical tools well-adapted to one spatial dimension. Recently, this was highlighted by anomalous observations in the single-particle spectral function A(q, ω) of 1D cuprate chain compounds, measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), which were explained by the presence of a long-range attractive interaction. Such an extended interaction should leave its fingerprints on other observables, notably the dynamical spin structure factor S(q, ω), measured by neutron scattering or resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Starting from a simple Hubbard Hamiltonian in 1D and using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (tDMRG) methods, we show that the presence of long-range attractive coupling, directly through an instantaneous Coulomb interaction V or retarded electron phonon (el-ph) coupling, can introduce significant spectral weight redistribution in S(q, ω) across a wide range of doping. Here, this underscores the significant impact that extended interactions can have on dynamical correlations among particles, and the importance of properly incorporating this influence in modeling. Our results demonstrate that S(q, ω) can provide a sensitive experimental constraint, which complements ARPES measurements, in identifying key interactions in 1D cuprates, beyond the standard Hubbard model.

Gamow-shell-model description of Li isotopes and their mirror partners

Background: Weakly bound and unbound nuclei close to particle drip lines are laboratories of new nuclear structure physics at the extremes of neutron/proton excess. The comprehensive description of these systems requires an open quantum system framework that is capable of treating resonant and nonresonant many-body states on equal footing. Purpose: In this work, we develop the complex-energy configuration interaction approach to describe binding energies and spectra of selected 5 ≤ $\textit{A}$ ≤ 11 nuclei. Method: We employ the complex-energy Gamow shell model (GSM) assuming a rigid 4 He core. The effective Hamiltonian, consisting of a core-nucleon Woods-Saxon potential and a simplified version of the Furutani-Horiuchi-Tamagaki interaction with the mass-dependent scaling, is optimized in the $\textit{sp}$ space. To diagonalize the Hamiltonian matrix, we employ the Davidson method and the Density Matrix Renormalization Group technique. Results: We report our optimized GSM Hamiltonian offers a good reproduction of binding energies and spectra with the root-mean-square (rms) deviation from experiment of 160 keV. Since the model performs well when used to predict known excitations that have not been included in the fit, it can serve as a reliable tool to describe poorly known states. A case in point is our prediction for the pair of unbound mirror nuclei 10 Li – 10 N in which a huge Thomas-Ehrman shift dramatically alters the pattern of low-energy excitations. Conclusion: The new model will enable comprehensive studies of structure and reactions aspects of light drip-line nuclei.

Entanglement and seniority

In quantum mechanics entanglement is the most striking phenomenon which has no counterpart in classical systems. Although, different approaches have already been developed to study correlations in the case of indistinguishable particles, the exploration of the so-called mode entanglement is still in its initial stage in nuclear physics. Study of mode-entanglement in the seniority model, derivation of analytic formulas for the one-body reduced density matrix of states with seniority $ν$ = 0, 1, 2, and $ν$ = 3, and also determination of the particle number dependence of the one-body reduced density matrix for arbitrary seniority. In addition, comparison of the predictions of the seniority model with the results of the shell model to gain insight into the structure and correlations of the ground and lowest yrast states. In the seniority model the analytic results are calculated using the quasi-spin formalism. The numerical shell model calculations are carried out in the standard shell model framework using an inert core. The applied realistic effective interactions are derived earlier using the $G$-matrix formalism. The density matrix renormalization group method is also applied in order to directly calculate the mode entropies. In the seniority model simple analytical expressions are given for the mode entropies. The peculiar behavior of the half-filled shells and the seniority-zero states are revealed. Numerical results are presented for the lightest stable calcium isotopes and for 94 Ru nucleus. For 94 Ru, the seniority model accounts for the 0$g$ 9/2 mode entropies, but seniority mixing is important for certain yrast states. Furthermore, interaction induced quantum fluctuations decrease the occupation of the 0$f$ 5/2 , 1$p$ 3/2 and 1$p$ 1/2 shells, and amount in non-negligible mode entropies on these shells, too, clearly outside the scope of the simple (0$g$ 9/2 ) 4 seniority model. The 0$f$ 7/2 shell-based seniority model is more accurate for the Ca isotopes, but seniority mixing is substantial for some 44 Ca yrast states, too. Mode and one-body entanglement entropies are useful tools to investigate the structure of quantum correlations in nuclei.

Preparation of the SU(3) lattice Yang-Mills vacuum with variational quantum methods

Studying QCD and other gauge theories on quantum hardware requires the preparation of physically interesting states. The variational quantum eigensolver provides a way of performing vacuum state preparation on quantum hardware. Here in this work, variational quantum eigensolver is applied to pure SU(3) lattice Yang-Mills on a single plaquette and one dimensional plaquette chains. Bayesian optimization and gradient descent were investigated for performing the classical optimization. Ansatz states for plaquette chains are constructed in a scalable manner from smaller systems using domain decomposition and a stitching procedure analogous to the density matrix renormalization group. Small examples are performed on IBM’s superconducting Manila processor.
