Error control for reliable digital data transmission and storage systems

A problem in designing semiconductor memories is to provide some measure of error control without requiring excessive coding overhead or decoding time. In LSI and VLSI technology, memories are often organized on a multiple bit (or byte) per chip basis. For example, some 256K-bit DRAM's are organized in 32Kx8 bit-bytes. Byte oriented codes such as Reed Solomon (RS) codes can provide efficient low overhead error control for such memories. However, the standard iterative algorithm for decoding RS codes is too slow for these applications. In this paper we present some special decoding techniques for extended single-and-double-error-correcting RS codes which are capable of high speed operation. These techniques are designed to find the error locations and the error values directly from the syndrome without having to use the iterative alorithm to find the error locator polynomial. Two codes are considered: (1) a d sub min = 4 single-byte-error-correcting (SBEC), double-byte-error-detecting (DBED) RS code; and (2) a d sub min = 6 double-byte-error-correcting (DBEC), triple-byte-error-detecting (TBED) RS code.

Processing circuit with asymmetry corrector and convolutional encoder for digital data

A processing circuit is provided for correcting for input parameter variations, such as data and clock signal symmetry, phase offset and jitter, noise and signal amplitude, in incoming data signals. An asymmetry corrector circuit performs the correcting function and furnishes the corrected data signals to a convolutional encoder circuit. The corrector circuit further forms a regenerated clock signal from clock pulses in the incoming data signals and another clock signal at a multiple of the incoming clock signal. These clock signals are furnished to the encoder circuit so that encoded data may be furnished to a modulator at a high data rate for transmission.

A gridding approach to detect patterns of change in coastal wetlands from digital data

The conversion of land to water or water to land in the Grand Bayou wetlands area from 1972 to 1981 is evaluated on the basis of Landsat MSS band 2 and 4 images. A postclassification (land vs water) procedure is employed, and grids 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 pixels square are superimposed on the classified data in an effort to reduce the effects of poor georegistration of the images (simulated by shifting one set of grids two pixels vertically and horizontally). The results are presented in tables, maps, and sample images and characterized in detail. Grids 5 or 10 pixels square are found to give percentage land/water change values and locations similar to those obtained in pixel-by-pixel analysis of nearly perfectly matched images.

An automated digital data collection and analysis system for the Charpy Impact Tester

The standard Charpy Impact Tester has been modified by the addition of a system of hardware and software to improve the accuracy and consistency of measurements made during specimen fracturing experiments. An optical disc, light source, and detector generate signals that indicate the pendulum position as a function of time. These signals are used by a computer to calculate the velocity and kinetic energy of the pendulum as a function of its position.

Application of IRIG 106 Digital Data Recorder Standards for Flight Test

During flight tests, data is acquired from different sources and in different formats. Sensor data, aircraft avionics bus data, time, voice and video are essential for analysis of these flight tests. IRIG 106 standards exist for recording and transferring these data types. However, to enhance interoperability of flight test data between (multinational) test teams, a standard was needed to encapsulate all these data types. For this purpose the Telemetry Group of the Range Commanders Council (RCC) first published in 2004 the IRIG 106 Chapter 10 Standard, “Solid-State On-Board Recorder Standard”. This standard is evolving up to present. This AGARDograph gives an introduction to the standard, explains how the standard is positioned among other relevant standards, and describes the equipment and their application in flight tests with some examples. The topics covered include IRIG 106 Chapter 10 compatible recording of (multiple) data streams, synchronization of data, data recorders, data retrieval, data processing, and examples of flight test programs. Further development of the standard, originally published for on-board recorders, is described for extending the requirements for ground-based data recorders. The last chapter addresses a number of issues related to the application of the Chapter 10 standard with references to information and possible solutions. This document shows how data acquisition and data processing in accordance to IRIG 106 Chapter 10 standard can be applied in NATO flight tests and will thereby contribute to collaboration and cost efficiency.

Analysis of the Tanana River Basin using LANDSAT data

Digital image classification techniques were used to classify land cover/resource information in the Tanana River Basin of Alaska. Portions of four scenes of LANDSAT digital data were analyzed using computer systems at Ames Research Center in an unsupervised approach to derive cluster statistics. The spectral classes were identified using the IDIMS display and color infrared photography. Classification errors were corrected using stratification procedures. The classification scheme resulted in the following eleven categories; sedimented/shallow water, clear/deep water, coniferous forest, mixed forest, deciduous forest, shrub and grass, bog, alpine tundra, barrens, snow and ice, and cultural features. Color coded maps and acreage summaries of the major land cover categories were generated for selected USGS quadrangles (1:250,000) which lie within the drainage basin. The project was completed within six months.

Automated basin delineation from digital terrain data

While digital terrain grids are now in wide use, accurate delineation of drainage basins from these data is difficult to efficiently automate. A recursive order N solution to this problem is presented. The algorithm is fast because no point in the basin is checked more than once, and no points outside the basin are considered. Two applications for terrain analysis and one for remote sensing are given to illustrate the method, on a basin with high relief in the Sierra Nevada. This technique for automated basin delineation will enhance the utility of digital terrain analysis for hydrologic modeling and remote sensing.

Real-Time Digital Compression Of Television Image Data

Digital encoding/decoding system compresses color television image data in real time for transmission at lower data rates and, consequently, lower bandwidths. Implements predictive coding process, in which each picture element (pixel) predicted from values of prior neighboring pixels, and coded transmission expresses difference between actual and predicted current values. Combines differential pulse-code modulation process with non-linear, nonadaptive predictor, nonuniform quantizer, and multilevel Huffman encoder.

Thunderstorm intensity as determined from satellite data

Digital infrared data from SMS 2 obtained on May 6, 1975 are used to study thunderstorm vertical growth rates and cloud top structure in relation to the occurrence of severe weather (tornadoes, hail, and high wind) on the ground. All thunderstorms from South Dakota to Texas along a N-S oriented cold front were monitored for a 4 h period with 5 min interval data. Thunderstorm growth rate, as determined by the rate of blackbody temperature isotherm expansion and minimum cloud top temperature, are shown to be correlated with reports of severe weather on the ground.

Integration of airborne Thematic Mapper Simulator (TMS) data and digitized aerial photography via an ISH transformation

A simple method for enhancing the spatial and spectral resolution of disparate data sets is presented. Two data sets, digitized aerial photography at a nominal spatial resolution 3,7 meters and TMS digital data at 24.6 meters, were coregistered through a bilinear interpolation to solve the problem of blocky pixel groups resulting from rectification expansion. The two data sets were then subjected to intensity-saturation-hue (ISH) transformations in order to 'blend' the high-spatial-resolution (3.7 m) digitized RC-10 photography with the high spectral (12-bands) and lower spatial (24.6 m) resolution TMS digital data. The resultant merged products make it possible to perform large-scale mapping, ease photointerpretation, and can be derived for any of the 12 available TMS spectral bands.

Discrimination of rock classes and alteration products in southwestern Saudi Arabia with computer-enhanced LANDSAT data

Digital LANDSAT MSS data for an area in the southwestern Arabian Shield were computer-enhanced to improve discrimination of rock classes, and recognition of gossans associated with massive sulphide deposits. The test area is underlain by metamorphic rocks that are locally intruded by granites; these are partly overlain by sandstones. The test area further includes the Wadi Wassat and Wadi Qatan massive sulphide deposits, which are commonly capped by gossans of ferric oxides, silica, and carbonates. Color patterns and boundaries on contrast-stretched ratio color composite imagery, and on complementary images constructed using principal component and canonical analyses transformations, correspond exceptionally well to 1:100,000 scale field maps. A qualitative visual comparison of information content showed that the ratio enhancement provided the best overall image for identification of rock type and alteration products.
