Handbook for Additively Manufactured Materials: Microstructure, Properties, and Fractography

As the additive manufacturing (AM) industry has grown and the processes have matured more alloys have been adapted to the various AM processes. Understanding the microstructure and properties of these AM alloys is important in designing parts that perform appropriately in application. For decades materials handbooks have been informative references for designers and engineers alike to know what properties and microstructures to expect in alloys produced by other forms of manufacturing. AM alloy references for properties and microstructures have been largely limited to literature that may not be subject to the same industry standard heat treatments or in standard process parameters. NASA has worked with partners to characterize various commercially available AM alloys with a high degree of traceability. This work aims utilize industry-relevant, traceable datasets to develop a new handbook for AM alloys to better inform designers and engineers of the microstructures, fractures, and first order properties from over 30 AM alloys produced across the industry.

Study of solid rocket motors for a space shuttle booster. Volume 2, book 3, addendum 1: Cost estimating data

A second iteration of the program baseline configuration and cost for the solid propellant rocket engines used with the space shuttle booster system is presented. The purpose of the study was to ensure that total program costs were complete and to review areas where costs might be overly conservative and could be reduced. Labor and material were analyzed in more depth, more definition was prepared to separate recurring from nonrecurring costs, and the operations portions of the engine and stage were separated into more identifiable activities.

Space Station needs, attributes and architectural options. Volume 2, book 1, part 4: Payload element mission data sheets

Data sheets are presented for 11 internal payloads, 30 externally mounted payloads, and 46 free flyers. The importance of the space station to each payload element is rated on a scale of 1 to 10. The type of experiment noncommercial science and applications, commercial, technological, and operational is indicated and the payload and its objectives are described. Space is provided for noting requirements for power; data/communication; thermal environment; equipment physical characteristics; crew size; and service and maintenance.

Application of materials database (MAT.DB.) to materials education

Finding the right material for the job is an important aspect of engineering. Sometimes the choice is as fundamental as selecting between steel and aluminum. Other times, the choice may be between different compositions in an alloy. Discovering and compiling materials data is a demanding task, but it leads to accurate models for analysis and successful materials application. Mat. DB. is a database management system designed for maintaining information on the properties and processing of engineered materials, including metals, plastics, composites, and ceramics. It was developed by the Center for Materials Data of American Society for Metals (ASM) International. The ASM Center for Materials Data collects and reviews material property data for publication in books, reports, and electronic database. Mat. DB was developed to aid the data management and material applications.

EOS Data Products Handbook

The EOS Data Products Handbook provides brief descriptions of the data products that will be produced from a range of missions of the Earth Observing System (EOS) and associated projects. Volume 1, originally published in 1997, covers the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), the Terra mission (formerly named EOS AM-1), and the Data Assimilation System, while this volume, Volume 2, covers the Active Cavity Radiometer Irradiance Monitor Satellite (ACRIMSAT), Aqua, Jason-1, Landsat 7, Meteor 3M/Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment III (SAGE III). the Quick Scatterometer (QuikScat), the Quick Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (Quik-TOMS), and the Vegetation Canopy Lidar (VCL) missions. Volume 2 follows closely the format of Volume 1, providing a list of products and an introduction and overview descriptions of the instruments and data processing, all introductory to the core of the book, which presents the individual data product descriptions, organized into 11 topical chapters. The product descriptions are followed by five appendices, which provide contact information for the EOS data centers that will be archiving and distributing the data sets, contact information for the science points of contact for the data products, references, acronyms and abbreviations, and a data products index.

Launch Vehicle Estimating Factors for Use in Advance Space Mission Planning

This launch vehicle reference document contains mission characteristic and launch vehicle capability data for use by NASA and particularly the Office of Space Science and Applications (OSSA) in the preparation of future mission plans. The data in this reference book are derived from sources that are considered to be sufficiently accurate for advance planning. In no instance should these data be used for detailed mission planning without concurrence of the Director of Launch Vehicle and Propulsion Programs. This edition reflects updates in vehicle performance and possible availability and introduces a section on the Space Shuttle. The Shuttle section has been coordinated with the Office of Manned Space Flight.

The Echoes of Earth Science

NASA s Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) acquires, archives, and manages data from all of NASA s Earth science satellites, for the benefit of the Space Agency and for the benefit of others, including local governments, first responders, the commercial remote sensing industry, teachers, museums, and the general public. EOSDIS is currently handling an extraordinary amount of NASA scientific data. To give an idea of the volume of information it receives, NASA s Terra Earth-observing satellite, just one of many NASA satellites sending down data, sends it hundreds of gigabytes a day, almost as much data as the Hubble Space Telescope acquires in an entire year, or about equal to the amount of information that could be found in hundreds of pickup trucks filled with books. To make EOSDIS data completely accessible to the Earth science community, NASA teamed up with private industry in 2000 to develop an Earth science "marketplace" registry that lets public users quickly drill down to the exact information they need. It also enables them to publish their research and resources alongside of NASA s research and resources. This registry is known as the Earth Observing System ClearingHOuse, or ECHO. The charter for this project focused on having an infrastructure completely independent from EOSDIS that would allow for more contributors and open up additional data access options. Accordingly, it is only fitting that the term ECHO is more than just an acronym; it represents the functionality of the system in that it can echo out and create interoperability among other systems, all while maturing with time as industry technologies and standards change and improve.

The Magsat bibliography. Revision 1

Publications related to the Magsat project number 402, as of February 1991 are presented. Of these, 44 deal with analysis of the Earth's main magnetic field, 209 deal with analysis of the Earth's crustal field, 43 make use of Magsat-based main field models, and 63 deal with analyses of the magnetic field originating external to the Earth. The remainder documents the Magsat program, satellite, instruments, or data, or are review papers or books which use or refer to Magsat and its data. The Bibliography is divided into two parts; the first lists all papers by first author, and the second is subdivided by topic.

CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE FOR SPACE DATA SYSTEMS (CCSDS) WHITE PAPER ON THE USE OF BUNDLE PROTOCOL (BP) VERSION 7

This export is a technical white paper that recommends what is necessary to create a version (V7) DTN specification for the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) blue book and is based on IETF RFC BPBis.v26 (Note the original CCSDS standard as IRTF 5050). The considerations in this document follow the current CCSDS specification 734.2-B-1 (https://public.ccsds.org/Pubs/734x2b1.pdf) and is consistent with its intent and level of service. In it, are identified areas requiring updates and specification items that are essential to meet current minimums of capability.
