Toward Efficient Entropic Recycling by Mastering Ring–Chain Kinetics

Traditional chemical recycling approaches for condensation polymers suffer compounding energy losses and CO 2 emissions across multiple polymerization and depolymerization cycles. Entropic recycling can address these energy losses by entrapping free energy within the deconstruction products. Entropic recycling involves depolymerization to macrocyclic monomers, but such processes have not been feasible due to the high dilutions typically required to generate macrocyclic compounds. Here, we leverage selective catalysis to allow entropic recycling at concentrations 20–2000× higher than typical for macrocyclization reactions. We find that Ru-based olefin metathesis catalysts containing bulky iodine ligands significantly bias the ring–chain kinetic product distribution during ring-closing metathesis (RCM) toward the formation of oligomeric cycloalkenes. Further improvements in reaction concentration and macrocycle yield are obtained by using high catalyst loadings and by predisposing the alkene substrates to undergo favorable macrocyclization. These RCM optimizations translate effectively to cyclodepolymerization (CDP) of an olefin-containing polymer, with RCM and CDP affording similar macrocycle product distributions under identical reaction conditions. Macrocycle polymerization by entropy-driven ring-opening metathesis provides much higher molecular weight polymers than condensation polymerization of linear analogues, reducing the time to achieve high molecular weight from hours to minutes and enabling polymerization at room temperature. Finally, our findings re-emphasize the importance of energy consumption during a polymer’s lifecycle and provide a framework for the design of efficient entropic recycling systems.

[2 + 2] Cycloaddition Produces Divalent Organic Color-Centers with Reduced Heterogeneity in Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Organic color centers (OCCs), generated by the covalent functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes, have been exploited for chemical sensing, bioimaging, and quantum technologies. However, monovalent OCCs can assume at least 6 different bonding configurations on the sp 2 carbon lattice of a chiral nanotube, resulting in heterogeneous OCC photoluminescence emissions. Herein, we show that a heat-activated [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction enables the synthesis of divalent OCCs with a reduced number of atomic bonding configurations. The chemistry occurs by simply mixing enophile molecules (e.g., methylmaleimide, maleic anhydride, and 4-cyclopentene-1,3-dione) with an ethylene glycol suspension of SWCNTs at elevated temperature (70–140 °C). Unlike monovalent OCC chemistries, we observe just three OCC emission peaks that can be assigned to the three possible bonding configurations of the divalent OCCs based on density functional theory calculations. Notably, these OCC photoluminescence peaks can be controlled by temperature to decrease the emission heterogeneity even further. Furthermore, this divalent chemistry provides a scalable way to synthesize OCCs with tightly controlled emissions for emerging applications.

[Chemistry of alpha-aminonitriles. Aziridine-2-carbonitrile: photochemical formation from 2-aminopropenenitrile]

2-Aminopropenenitrile in solvents such as MeCN, MeOH, or H2O is photoisomerized by UV light to racemic aziridine-2-carbonitrile (rac-2); the larger part of the starting material, however, fragments to HCN and MeCN. The observed photocyclization constitutes a structural connection within an ensemble of C3H4N2 compounds considered to be potentially relevant to prebiotic chemistry.

The C4H7+ cation. A theoretical investigation

The potential energy surface of the C4H7+ cation has been investigated with ab initio quantum chemical theory. Extended basis set calculations, including electronic correlation, show that cyclobutyl and cyclopropylcarbinyl cation are equally stable isomers. The saddle point connecting these isomers lies 0.6 kcal/mol above the minima. The global C4H7+ minimum corresponds to the 1-methylallyl cation, which is 9.0 kcal/mol more stable than the cyclobutyl and the cyclopropylcarbinyl cation and 9.5 kcal/mol below the 2-methylallyl cation. These results are in excellent agreement with experimental data.
