Development of a simplified calibrated building simulation model of a supermarket for proposed ECMs and control strategies impact evaluation

Calibrated building energy simulation is an important pathway to more energy-efficient buildings, but the information requirements of some approaches to this problem are significant. This is particularly true for supermarkets and other so-called “big-box” retail stores. Another characteristic of supermarkets is the significant interaction between Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration systems in these buildings. These buildings could contain a wide variety of systems and a degree of load diversity that makes calibrated modeling a challenge. This paper describes a simplified approach that uses OpenStudio and EnergyPlus to combine known building parameters with “typical” parameters, resulting in a simplified building that is amenable to calibration. This approach was applied to a big-box store located in Nashville, Tennessee, and a calibrated model was obtained that was used to study potential energy conservation measures. Further, the paper also explores the capabilities of whole-building energy modeling tools, such as EnergyPlus, for modeling the HVAC controls and sequences and their impact evaluation. Although some measures are precluded by the model simplicity, several measures were found to improve the efficiency of the model and demonstrate that the simplified modeling approach is effective. Practical Application: This paper introduces a hybrid approach of building energy model calibration using limited information available from the actual building in combination with characteristics of a “typical” building of the same type. This hybrid approach would also be applicable for other building types than discussed in this paper to calibrate the building energy model using limited information from the actual building.

Study of Inverter Control Strategies on the Stability of Microgrids Toward 100% Renewable Penetration

This paper investigates microgrid transient stability with mixed generation - synchronous generator (SG), grid-forming (GFM) and grid-following (GFL) inverters - under increasing penetration levels toward a 100% renewable generation microgrid. Specifically, the dynamics of a microgrid with an SG and GFL inverter(s), an SG with GFM inverter(s), and an SG with GFM and GFL inverters under each penetration are evaluated with an electromagnetic transient study with two critical dynamic events: unplanned islanding and switching in a pumped induction motor load. Analysis and simulation results indicate that the microgrid with GFL inverters running in parallel with the SG can provide a faster power response than the GFM inverters to compensate for the deviations of the frequency and voltage. The scenario with the mixed SG, GFM, and GFL inverter has the best transient and steady-state stability toward 100% inverter-based resource (IBR) penetration. This comprehensive study provides helpful references for microgrid engineers to understand the microgrid stability when facing various choice of installing IBRs (GFL, GFM, or mixed).

Influence of overhead HVAC and aerosol control strategies on coarse mode particle dispersion and exposure in a full-scale room experiment

Coarse mode respiratory aerosols can carry viral loads over long distances and have very different dynamics than submicron particles, but experimental studies under realistic conditions remain limited. Here, to study the differential impacts on exposure under different mixing conditions, we co-released 7–10 µm particles and carbon dioxide (CO 2 )—which served as an indicator of gas and submicron particle dynamics—in a 158 m 3 room at LBNL's FLEXLAB facility with an overhead heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. The room was arranged as a distanced meeting then a classroom with eight heated manikins and a researcher. Spatial variability was measured using 16 particle counters and 22–26 CO 2 sensors throughout the space. Conditions included: HVAC off or supply air at 1000-1060 m 3 h -1 at neutral, cooling, or heating temperatures; with and without 20% outdoor air; and added HVAC filtration, portable air cleaners (PACs), or a physical barrier between the speaker and occupants. We found that good mixing via neutral or cooling supply air or use of PACs under heating lowered coarse particle exposure at some locations, but increased exposure for one-quarter to two-thirds of manikins compared to poor mixing under heating. A physical barrier reduced direct transfer of coarse particles during heating, but less during cooling. High spatial variability shows that a single measurement cannot represent occupant exposure. Instantaneous air mixing assumptions overstate the effectiveness of ventilation, HVAC filtration, and upper-room germicidal ultraviolet disinfection for coarse particles, as relatively few particles reach the return grille or upper room under most conditions.

The surprisingly inexpensive cost of state-driven emission control strategies

Traditionally, analysis of the costs of cutting greenhouse gas emissions has assumed that governments would implement idealized, optimal policies such as uniform economy-wide carbon taxes. Yet actual policies in the real world, especially in large federal governments, are often highly heterogeneous and vary in political support and administrative capabilities within a country. While the benefits of heterogeneous action have been discussed widely for experimentation and leadership, little is known about its costs. Focusing on the United States, we represent plausible variation (by more than a factor of 3) in the stringency of state-led climate policy in a process-based integrated assessment model (GCAM-USA). For a wide array of national decarbonization targets, we find that the nationwide cost from heterogeneous subnational policies is only one-tenth higher than nationally uniform policies. Such results hinge on two critical technologies (advanced biofuels and electricity) for which inter-state trade ameliorates the economic efficiencies that might arise with heterogeneous action.

Advanced polarization-control strategies for enhancing performance in multipetawatt laser facilities

Our research focuses on designing all-reflective phase retarders (RPRs) to generate and maintain circularly polarized (CP) light for NSF OPAL and other multipetawatt laser facilities. Assuming that the input polarization is either s- or p-polarized, RPRs need to be used in an out-of-plane configuration. Here, we will discuss the impact of transporting and focusing optics on CP light.

Control Strategies and Validation in the Hybrid Optimization and Performance Platform (HOPP)

The Hybrid Optimization and Performance Platform (HOPP) is a tool that simulates hybrid power plants in various configurations, and also calculates the financial feasibility of these plants. This report outlines an overview of HOPP and the energy storage dispatch strategies available. It then presents three case studies which demonstrate different applications of HOPP. The first case looks at the profitability of hybrid power plants in different locations in the USA. The second case examines the availability of hybrid power plants to provide energy reliability services. The third case presents a plant that produces both hydrogen and electricity, and demonstrates a dispatch strategy that chooses the most profitable energy vector based on price signals. The next section shows the validation of HOPP on operational data, using data from both unit-scale and utility-scale power plants. This validation process demonstrated that HOPP can simulate the power output of both wind and solar PV plants at both scales with comparable fidelity to an existing commercial software tool. Finally, HOPP is applied in a field test which applies an optimal dispatch strategy to a physical battery in a unit-scale hybrid plant at NREL. HOPP's optimal dispatch strategy, applied in a real-world setting, improved this hybrid plant's ability to meet a load signal while minimizing operational costs.
