Control law synthesis and optimization software for large order aeroservoelastic systems

A flexible aircraft or space structure with active control is typically modeled by a large-order state space system of equations in order to accurately represent the rigid and flexible body modes, unsteady aerodynamic forces, actuator dynamics and gust spectra. The control law of this multi-input/multi-output (MIMO) system is expected to satisfy multiple design requirements on the dynamic loads, responses, actuator deflection and rate limitations, as well as maintain certain stability margins, yet should be simple enough to be implemented on an onboard digital microprocessor. A software package for performing an analog or digital control law synthesis for such a system, using optimal control theory and constrained optimization techniques is described.

Constrained trajectory optimization for kinematically redundant arms

Two velocity optimization schemes for resolving redundant joint configurations are compared. The Extended Moore-Penrose Technique minimizes the joint velocities and avoids obstacles indirectly by adjoining a cost gradient to the solution. A new method can incorporate inequality constraints directly to avoid obstacles and singularities in the workspace. A four-link arm example is used to illustrate singularity avoidance while tracking desired end-effector paths.

Finite dimensional approximation of a class of constrained nonlinear optimal control problems

An abstract framework for the analysis and approximation of a class of nonlinear optimal control and optimization problems is constructed. Nonlinearities occur in both the objective functional and in the constraints. The framework includes an abstract nonlinear optimization problem posed on infinite dimensional spaces, and approximate problem posed on finite dimensional spaces, together with a number of hypotheses concerning the two problems. The framework is used to show that optimal solutions exist, to show that Lagrange multipliers may be used to enforce the constraints, to derive an optimality system from which optimal states and controls may be deduced, and to derive existence results and error estimates for solutions of the approximate problem. The abstract framework and the results derived from that framework are then applied to three concrete control or optimization problems and their approximation by finite element methods. The first involves the von Karman plate equations of nonlinear elasticity, the second, the Ginzburg-Landau equations of superconductivity, and the third, the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible, viscous flows.

Constrained Burn Optimization for the International Space Station

In long-term trajectory planning for the International Space Station (ISS), translational burns are currently targeted sequentially to meet the immediate trajectory constraints, rather than simultaneously to meet all constraints, do not employ gradient-based search techniques, and are not optimized for a minimum total deltav (v) solution. An analytic formulation of the constraint gradients is developed and used in an optimization solver to overcome these obstacles. Two trajectory examples are explored, highlighting the advantage of the proposed method over the current approach, as well as the potential v and propellant savings in the event of propellant shortages.

Parametric study of a canard-configured transport using conceptual design optimization

Constrained-parameter optimization is used to perform optimal conceptual design of both canard and conventional configurations of a medium-range transport. A number of design constants and design constraints are systematically varied to compare the sensitivities of canard and conventional configurations to a variety of technology assumptions. Main-landing-gear location and canard surface high-lift performance are identified as critical design parameters for a statically stable, subsonic, canard-configured transport.

Load Shedding for Voltage Regulation With Probabilistic Agent Compliance

With the increased observability and controllability of distribution systems, the share of behind-the-meter systems is trending upwards rapidly. As a consequence, the impact of human behaviors on system performance can no longer be ignored and should be reflected in the energy management system models. In this paper, we discuss the problem of distribution system voltage control by active power curtailment where the agent compliance of the load curtailment signal is probabilistic. We discuss the modeling of the optimal voltage control problem with probabilistic agent compliance as a chance-constrained optimization problem, its tractable safe approximation using convex restriction, and a scenario-based mixed-integer reformulation as well as the associated solution method based on augmented Lagrangian method. The numerical simulation on IEEE test system validates the effectiveness of the proposed approach in obtaining high-quality feasible load curtailment signal with low computational cost, which makes it a viable tool for real time decision making.

Apparatus and method for optimizing quantifiable behavior in configurable devices and systems

An apparatus and method are provided to perform constrained optimization of a constrained property of an apparatus, which is complex due to having several components, and these components are configurable in real-time. The optimization is achieved by detecting values of the constrained property and a plurality of other properties of the apparatus when the apparatus is configured in a first subset of the plurality of configurations. A model is learned using the detected values of the constrained property. The model represents the constrained property and can also represent other properties as a function of the configurations. The model can also include estimated uncertainties of the constrained property in the model. Then, using the d model and the estimated uncertainties, the optimal configuration can be selected to minimize an error value (e.g., the difference between a desired value and an observed value of the at least one constrained property).

A Sequential Quadratic Programming Algorithm for Nonsmooth Problems with Upper- \({\boldsymbol{\mathcal{C}^2}}\) Objective

An optimization algorithm for nonsmooth nonconvex constrained optimization problems with upper- \({\boldsymbol{\mathcal{C}^2}}\) objective functions is proposed and analyzed. Upper- \({\boldsymbol{\mathcal{C}^2}}\) is a weakly concave property that exists in difference of convex (DC) functions and arises naturally in many applications, particularly certain classes of solutions to parametric optimization problems e.g., recourse of stochastic programming and projection onto closed sets. The algorithm can be viewed as an extension of sequential quadratic programming (SQP) to nonsmooth problems with upper- \({\boldsymbol{\mathcal{C}^2}}\) objectives or a simplified bundle method. It is globally convergent with bounded algorithm parameters that are updated with a trust-region criterion. The algorithm handles general smooth constraints through linearization and uses a line search to ensure progress. The potential inconsistencies from the linearization of the constraints are addressed through a penalty method. In conclusion, the capabilities of the algorithm are demonstrated by solving both simple upper- \({\boldsymbol{\mathcal{C}^2}}\) problems and a real-world optimal power flow problem used in current power grid industry practices.

Improving Free-Piston Stirling Engine Specific Power

This work uses analytical methods to demonstrate the potential benefits of optimizing piston and/or displacer motion in a Stirling Engine. Isothermal analysis was used to show the potential benefits of ideal motion in ideal Stirling engines. Nodal analysis is used to show that ideal piston and displacer waveforms are not optimal in real Stirling engines. Constrained optimization was used to identify piston and displacer waveforms that increase Stirling engine specific power.

Large Scale Bilevel Optimization for N-K SCOPF Using Adversarial Robustness

Ensuring a secure dispatch against multiple simultaneous outages has long been desired to maintain grid security in the presence of severe events, such as extreme weather phenomena. Traditionally denoted as N-k security constrained optimal power flow (N-k SCOPF), this problem is intractable to solve due to its size being combinatorial in the number of simultaneous outages and due to the non-convex nature of the AC network constraints. This hinders the use of N-k SCOPF for operating realistic-scale systems. In this paper, we introduce a methodology to scalably solve an AC-feasible dispatch that improves security over k simultaneous outages. Our methodology poses N-k SCOPF as a bilevel optimization problem and solves it using an adversarial robustness approach. We develop new efficient methods to solve each level of the bilevel optimization by employing knowledge of the physics of the underlying system. This yields significant improvements in speed and convergence that enable us to address the N-k SCOPF problem at scale. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by conducting a comprehensive analysis of an N-3 SCOPF for a 500-bus network. Furthermore, we emphasize the ability of our physics-driven techniques to handle larger systems by successfully scaling up to 12,000 buses.

A new algorithm for general multiobjective optimization

Described is a new technique for converting a constrained optimization problem to an unconstrained one, and a new method for multiobjective optimization based on that technique. The technique transforms the objective functions into goal constraints. The goal constraints are appended to the set of behavior constraints and the envelope of all functions in the set is searched for an unconstrained minimum. The technique may be categorized as a SUMT algorithm. In multiobjective applications, the approach has the advantage of locating a compromise minimum without the need to optimize for each individual objective function separately. The constrained to unconstrained conversion is described, followed by a description of the multiobjective problem. Two example problems are presented to demonstrate the robustness of the method.

Optimal design of chemoepitaxial guideposts for the directed self-assembly of block copolymer systems using an inexact Newton algorithm

Directed self-assembly (DSA) of block copolymers (BCPs) is one of the most promising developments in the cost-effective production of nanoscale devices. The process makes use of the natural tendency for BCP melts to form nanoscale structures upon phase separation. The phase separation can be directed through the use of chemically patterned substrates to promote the formation of morphologies that are essential to the production of semiconductor devices. Moreover, the design of substrate pattern can be formulated as an optimization problem for which we seek optimal substrate designs that effectively produce given target morphologies. In this paper, we adopt a phase field model given by a nonlocal Cahn–Hilliard partial differential equation (PDE) based on the minimization of the Ohta–Kawasaki free energy, and present an efficient PDE-constrained optimization framework for the optimal design problem. The design variables are the locations of circular- or strip-shaped guiding posts that are used to model the substrate chemical pattern. To solve the ensuing optimization problem, we propose a variant of an inexact Newton conjugate gradient algorithm tailored to this problem. Additionally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our computational strategy on numerical examples that span a range of target morphologies. Owing to our second-order optimizer and fast state solver, the numerical results demonstrate five orders of magnitude reduction in computational cost over previous work. The efficiency of our framework and the fast convergence of our optimization algorithm enable us to rapidly solve the optimal design problem in not only two, but also three spatial dimensions.

Development and Analysis of Optimal Multilevel Solvers on Advanced Computers. Final Report

Constrained optimization in the context of time dependent, partial differential equations (PDE) leads to a symmetric, block-tridiagonal system of nonlinear equations that must be solved repeatedly in an iterative solution strategy. The blocks represent spatial discretization, while the connection between the blocks represents a forward and backward integration in time. The focus of this project is to apply a parallel-in-time (PiT) solution technique to the large block-triangular system.

Aircraft design for mission performance using non-linear multiobjective optimization methods

A new technique which converts a constrained optimization problem to an unconstrained one where conflicting figures of merit may be simultaneously considered has been combined with a complex mission analysis system. The method is compared with existing single and multiobjective optimization methods. A primary benefit from this new method for multiobjective optimization is the elimination of separate optimizations for each objective, which is required by some optimization methods. A typical wide body transport aircraft is used for the comparative studies.
