Thermoelectric coatings for waste heat recovery and photo-thermal power

An energy harvesting system for collecting energy from sources of thermal energy that exist in the environment and convert the energy to electricity. The system has N-P junctions mounted on the outer surface of a conduit, pipe or flue. A hot medium flows through the conduit, pipe or flue. The p-n junctions operate as thermoelectric power generators. Heat absorbed at the p-n junctions increases the kinetic energy of charge carriers causing migration of the charge carriers. This thermally-driven migration of charge carriers is used to drive an electrical current in an external circuit.

Fluid mixing apparatus using high- and low-pressure fluid streams

A fluid mixing apparatus includes mixing conduits that extend through a fluid plenum and that define injection holes therethrough. The fluid plenum, which surrounds a first wall defining a main passage fluidly coupled to a low-pressure fluid source, is surrounded itself by a second wall defining a high-pressure plenum fluidly coupled to a high-pressure fluid source. The mixing conduits fluidly couple the high-pressure plenum to the main passage, and the fluid from the fluid plenum is delivered with the high-pressure fluid to the main passage, where the fluids mix before being discharged from an outlet of the main passage. The fluid mixing apparatus may be used to mix one or more fuels with high- and low-pressure air in a gas turbine combustor. Alternately, the fluid mixing apparatus may mix a fluid with high- and low-pressure water streams.

Tapping municipal water supply systems for low-impact hydropower growth

Conduit hydropower is a form of low-impact hydropower that uses existing water infrastructure, such as canals or pipelines, to capture what would otherwise be wasted energy. Agricultural conduits convey irrigation water across vast stretches of the U.S., primarily in the west, and are well-suited for hydrokinetic power capture within the flow stream or for hydro potential power capture where excess pressure exists. Drop structures within irrigation canals are suitable candidates for this type of hydropower development and have been retrofitted across a large number of sites over the past few decades.

Acoustic MEMS Sensor Array for Quench Detection of CICC Superconducting Cables

Here, a novel quench detection method using micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) sensor technology has been investigated in use for high temperature superconducting (HTS) conductors such REBCO tape cables. The sensor array along a superconducting cable, such as a cable-in-conduit-conductor (CICC), is installed in a cooling channel. It will allow sensitive and quick detection for a local quench of a superconducting cable. This work has confirmed that a quench of a single REBCO tape can be detected in liquid nitrogen by a MEMS piezoelectric microphone sensor. The quench detection design utilizing a MEMS sensor array method is discussed for the case of a toroidal field (TF) magnets of a fusion Tokamak device.

SPRUCE Wood Anatomy of Picea mariana and Larix laricina in SPRUCE Experimental Plots, Marcell Experimental Forest, Minnesota, July 2023

Branch samples were collected in July 2023 to measure wood anatomical traits on two dominant conifer species, Picea mariana and Larix laricina, in a bog forest at the SPRUCE (Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments) experiment in northern Minnesota. Anatomical measurements were made on the annual rings of those branches with dates ranging from 2011-2023. Wood anatomical measurements include annual tracheid diameter, tracheid density, cell wall thickness, thickness-to-span-ratio, and conduit lumen fraction in both earlywood and latewood. Wood anatomical samples were prepared using a portable sliding microtome (G.S.L.-1 lightweight microtome, WSL) and a light microscope (Leica DM2500). This dataset spans 2011–2023, with full branch-level coverage for 2020–2023, whereas some thinner branches formed only in recent years and therefore do not contain rings from earlier years. By providing annual, treatment-specific anatomical measurements, this dataset can help quantify structural acclimation to global change, clarify links among phenology, wood formation, and hydraulic traits, and improve predictions of forest growth response under future climates. This dataset contains one data file in comma separate (.csv) format. Additional metadata are provided: one data dictionary and a file-level metadata file in comma separate (.csv) format and a user guide in PDF (*.pdf) format.

Analysis of ZTE MRI application to sandstone and carbonate

Micro-tomography (μCT) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) have been used to characterize porous media for decades. Here, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) enables direct visualization of pore architecture and many pulse sequences exist. In this work, we tested the MRI pulse sequence Zero Echo Time (ZTE) to study sandstone and carbonate for its ability to address short relaxation times. We aimed at resolving two fluid conduit scales, i.e. pores and fractures. In this research, we study tighter porous systems than those previously reported using ZTE. Additionally, Pore Cluster Analysis (PCA), combined with ZTE, can be used to analyze pore-fracture connectivity of relatively large core plugs. We show that ZTE can resolve two-scale pore systems simultaneously, i.e. fractures and pores. By combining Time-Domain NMR pore-size analysis and PCA, we show that careful selection of resolution is necessary to understand transport in porous media.

Biogenic Iron Sulfide Nanoparticles to Enable Extracellular Electron Uptake in Sulfate‐Reducing Bacteria

Abstract Microbes synthesize cell‐associated nanoparticles (NPs) and utilize their physicochemical properties to produce energy under unfavorable metabolic conditions. Iron sulfide (FeS) NPs are ubiquitous and are predominantly biosynthesized by sulfate‐reducing bacteria (SRB). However, the biological role of FeS NPs in SRB remains understudied. Now, conductive FeS NPs function is demonstrated as an electron conduit enabling Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough, an SRB strain, to utilize solid‐state electron donors via direct electron uptake. After forming FeS NPs on the cell surface, D. vulgaris initiated current generation coupled with sulfate reduction on electrodes poised at −0.4 V versus standard hydrogen electrode. Single‐cell activity analysis showed that the electron uptake and metabolic rate via FeS NPs in D. vulgaris were about sevenfold higher than those via native cell‐surface proteins in other SRB.

Hydrogen Bonding Enhances the Electrochemical Hydrogenation of Benzaldehyde in the Aqueous Phase

Abstract The hydrogenation of benzaldehyde to benzyl alcohol on carbon‐supported metals in water, enabled by an external potential, is markedly promoted by polarization of the functional groups. The presence of polar co‐adsorbates, such as substituted phenols, enhances the hydrogenation rate of the aldehyde by two effects, that is, polarizing the carbonyl group and increasing the probability of forming a transition state for H addition. These two effects enable a hydrogenation route, in which phenol acts as a conduit for proton addition, with a higher rate than the direct proton transfer from hydronium ions. The fast hydrogenation enabled by the presence of phenol and applied potential overcompensates for the decrease in coverage of benzaldehyde caused by competitive adsorption. A higher acid strength of the co‐adsorbate increases the intensity of interactions and the rates of selective carbonyl reduction.
