Evolving a New Electron Transfer Pathway for Nitrogen Fixation Uncovers an Electron Bifurcating-Like Enzyme Involved in Anaerobic Aromatic Compound Degradation

There is increasing evidence that protein electron carriers like Fd evolved to form specific partnerships with select electron donors and acceptors to keep native electron transfer pathways insulated from one another. This makes it challenging to integrate a Fd-dependent pathway such as biological nitrogen fixation into non-nitrogen-fixing organisms and provide the high-energy reducing power needed to fix nitrogen.

Bifurcation and stability in a model of moist convection in a shearing environment

The truncated spectral system (model I) of shallow moist two-dimensional convection discussed by Shirer and Dutton (1979) is expanded to eleven coefficients (model II) in order to include a basic wind. Cloud streets, the atmospheric analog of the solutions to model II, are typically observed in an environment containing a shearing basic motion field. Analysis of the branching behavior of solutions to mode II shows that, if the basic wind direction varies with height, very complex temporal behavior is possible as the modified Rayleigh number HR is increased sufficiently. The first convective solution is periodic, corresponding to a cloud band that propagates downwind; but secondary branching to a two-dimensional torus can occur for larger values of HR. Orientation band formulas are derived whose predictions generally agree with the results of previous studies.

Bifurcation and stability of low-order steady flows in horizontally and vertically forced convection

A nonlinear spectral model of two-dimensional, shallow Boussinesq convection which responds to heating in both the horizontal and vertical directions is examined. The governing partial differential system is converted to an infinite set of ordinary differential equations and truncated to a small set to permit detailed study of the number and types of transitions from one flow configuration to another. The Hadley number and the Rayleigh number are defined as the horizontal and vertical thermal forcing mechanisms, respectively, for inclusion in the nonlinear spectral model, which is composed of three equations. The model is then used to describe steady states, linearly stable solutions, and balancing factors in unstable stratification. The number and the distribution of the steady states are found to be qualitatively independent of the aspect ratio and the Prandtl number.

A magnetohydrodynamic simulation of the bifurcation of tail lobes during intervals with a northward interplanetary magnetic field

The interaction of the solar wind with the earth's magnetosphere during a northward interplanetary magnetic field was studied by using a three-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamic model. For a northward interplanetary magnetic field on 5 nT, the plasma sheet thickens near the noon-midnight meridian plane. When projected onto the polar cap this appears as a narrow channel extending from midnight towards noon. This plasma pattern is associated with three pairs of convection cells. The high latitude sunward convection and northern B(z) Birkeland current are caused by magnetic merging in the polar region.

Exploration of the solar-stellar connection at high spectral resolution with the Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter, and studies of thermal bifurcation at the photosphere-chromosphere interface

The dynamics of high-excitation plasma in the 100,000 K transition zones of stars of late spectral type, as observed with the International Ultraviolet Explorer, was compared with the radial gas velocities of individual structural features of the solar TZ, as observed with high spatial resolution by the UVSP on the Solar Maximum Mission. The 4th-positive system of carbon monoxide in the quiet sun and in active regions was studied in order to explore the properties of thermal inhomogeneities at the critical interface between the photosphere and chromosphere.

Hopf bifurcation in the driven cavity

Incompressible two dimensional calculations are reported for the impulsively started lid driven cavity with aspect ratio two. The algorithm is based on the time dependent streamfunction equation, with a Crank-Nicolson differencing scheme for the diffusion terms, and with an Adams-Bashforth scheme for the convection terms. A multigrid method is used to solve the linear implicit equations at each time step. Periodic asymptotic solutions have been found for Re = 10000 and for Re = 5000. The Re = 5000 results are validated by grid refinement calculations. The solutions are shown to be precisely periodic, and care is taken to demonstrate that asymptotic states were reached. A discussion is included about the indicators that are used to show that an asymptotic state was reached, and to show that the asymptotic state is indeed periodic.

Nonlinear behavior of solar gravity modes driven by He-3 in the core. I - Bifurcation analysis

The nonlinear development of solar gravity modes driven by He-3 burning in the solar core is investigated by means of an idealized dynamical model. Possible outcomes that have been suggested in the literature include the triggering of subcritical direct convection, leading to core mixing, and the saturation of the excitation processes, leading to sustained finite-amplitude oscillations. The present simple model suggests that the latter is the more likely. The limiting amplitude of the oscillations is estimated, ignoring possible resonances with other gravity modes, to be of order 10 km/s at the solar surface. Such oscillations would be easily observable. That large-amplitude gravity modes have not been observed suggests either that these modes are not unstable in the present era or that they are limited to much smaller amplitudes by resonant coupling.
