Selecting Charged Current Muon Neutrino Interactions on Argon with the Short-Baseline Near Detector

The uncertainties associated with neutrino-nucleus cross section modelling need to be reduced in order to measure neutrino oscillation parameters, the mass hierarchy and CP violation to a high degree of precision. SBND, a 112 ton liquid argon time projection chamber, will be the near detector of the short-baseline neutrino program at Fermilab. Once data taking begins in 2022, it will provide flux constraints for sterile neutrino searches and produce world leading neutrino-argon cross sections with up to seven million neutrino events in three years. This thesis describes the simulation, calibration and reconstruction tools developed to measure charged current muon neutrino interactions.Backgrounds from cosmic ray muons, neutrino interactions outside of the detector and different neutrino interaction channels were identified and removed as part of this process. The signal events were selected with purity of 90% and an efficiency of 67%, providing a strong starting point for meas urements of exclusive channels. The expected statistical and systematic uncertainties on rate predictions and cross section measurements at the full 6.6×10$^{20}$ proton on target exposure were evaluated.

Long-baseline Sterile Neutrino Searches in the NOvA Experiment

Experimental high energy physics constitutes the experimental investigation of the fundamental building blocks of matter and radiation and their interactions. These fundamental building blocks are classified as bosons and fermions. Neutrinos are fermions that come under the lepton category. According to the Standard Model of particle physics, they are massless, neutral particles that interacts with matter only through weak force and comes in three different flavors. Neutrinos exhibit a characteristic property, known as the neutrino oscillation. Neutrino oscillation is the the change of neutrino from one flavor to another flavor as they propagates in space. This phenomenon is only possible if the neutrinos are massive. The reported anomalous result from LSND and MiniBooNE experiments demanded the existence of a fourth kind of neutrino, at the same time, LEP experimental result confirms that only three active neutrino can exist. So if they exists, this fourth kind of neutrino can’t interact through weak force or they can be called as sterile neutrino. Some of the experiments favored the existence of sterile neutrinos, at the same time, there are some other experiments that disfavors their existence. So the search for the sterile neutrinos is very active in the field of experimental neutrino physics. NOvA is a long-baseline experiment with two functionally identical detectors, a Near Detector (ND) at Fermilab and a Far Detector at Ash River, Minnesota which is 810 km far away from the ND. They are offaxis detectors that lie 14.6 mrad off from the beam axis. This enables the detector to receive a neutrino beam with energy peak at 2 GeV. The NOvA experiment is designed to run with both the neutrino beam and antineutrino beam and NOvA has the potential to search for the existence of sterile neutrinos. This thesis is based on the sterile neutrino search by looking at the depletion of the neutral-current (NC) energy spectrum of neutrinos at the FD. Since NC events are not sensitive to three flavor oscillation, any depletion of NC events at the FD indicates the existence of sterile neutrinos.

Cost and Performance Baseline for Fossil Energy Plants, Volume 5: Natural Gas Electricity Generating Units for Flexible Operation

To address the data needs of energy system designers and to serve as a baseline for research and development, NETL has carried out a study to characterize the flexibility attributes - both performance and cost - of nine common commercial natural gas-fueled electricity generating units. The intermittent output of low-carbon, renewable power generation sources such as wind and solar create challenges to grid stability and reliability. Fossil-fueled power generation technologies are currently used to provide reliable, on-demand power during periods of reduced renewable output. Dispatchable generators must be able to accommodate increasing renewable generation as the nation pursues the Administration’s target of a decarbonized energy sector by 2035. As energy system experts seek to identify least-cost approaches to decarbonization, accurate cost and performance data characterizing dispatchable fossil generators that operate flexibly, at capacity factors that have been declining over time, and are needed to inform models for capacity expansion. Furthermore, these technologies continue to be a significant source of carbon dioxide emissions, providing the impetus for research and development, including the advancement and potential incorporation of carbon capture technologies. This study characterizes the cost and performance of select state-of-the-art natural gas-fueled power generation technologies: reciprocating internal combustion engines (RICE), simple cycle combustion turbines, and natural gas combined cycles (NGCC). An emphasis is placed on flexibility characteristics, such as part-load heat rate, ramp rates, start up times, and start up costs.

Baseline Hypothetical Facility for the Production of 131 I, 99 Mo, and 133 Xe from HALEU Fission Targets

The report describes the development of a hypothetical facility to produce the pharmaceutical radioisotope 131 I at an amount of 60 curies per week via the fission of a High Assay Low Enriched Uranium (HALEU) target, along with the chemical and physical processes and equipment needed to separate the 131 I and co-produced 99 Mo and 133 Xe. The hypothetical design was carried out using a 10 MWt research reactor. The irradiation calculation determined that three HALEU targets with aluminum cladding can be used to produce 60 Ci/week of 131 I, 750 Ci/week of 99 Mo and 560 Ci/week of 133 Xe. The process selected for the baseline design uses caustic dissolution of the target material with ion exchange processes to separate and purify the iodine and molybdenum. The xenon is processed using a cryogenic carbon bed separation process. Target processing occurs in seven shielded hot cells with a total footprint of 16m 2 and waste management occurs in an eight hot cell with a 2.5 m 2 footprint. Waste generated from the processing of the three targets per week would generate less than 4 shielded drums of waste annually. These hot cells would need varying levels of shielding due to the amount of fission products being handled in the unit. Hot cell facilities also require support services including QA/QC, health physics, administrative staff, operator changing room, radiological buffer areas, and waste storage. The overall facility would require a footprint of 1050 m 2 with 20.25 m 2 of shielded hot cells.

Enhancing Neutrino Event Simulation through Overlays at the ICARUS Experiment on the Short-Baseline Neutrino Program

In the pursuit of precise neutrino event simulation, the ICARUS experiment within the Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program at Fermilab uses an overlay technique to closely align simulations with experimental data. This technique consists of taking signals from data from each of the each of the three subsystems (TPC, PMT, CRT) and overlaying a simulated neutrino interaction onto the event. The overlay procedure includes superimposing simulated waveforms from neutrino interactions from both Time Projection Chambers (TPC) and Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs) onto their respective data counterparts. Furthermore, the Cosmic Ray Tagger (CRT) hits from both data and simulations are combined to form the overlay event. By combining signals in this manner, we can obtain a data-driven modeling of cosmic backgrounds as well as the detector response enabling a more precise handling of noise sources when using neutrino simulations.
