Antiferromagnetism in the kagome-lattice compound α-Cu 3 Mg(OH) 6 Br 2

The antiferromagnetism in α-Cu 3 Mg(OH) 6 Br 2 was studied by magnetic-susceptibility, specificheat and neutron-diffraction measurements. The crystal structure consists of Cu 2+ kagome layers with Mg 2+ ions occupying the centers of the hexagons, separated by Br 1- ions. The magnetic system orders antiferromagnetically at 5.4 K with the magnetic moments aligned ferromagnetically within the kagome planes. The ordered moment is 0.94 µ B , suggesting little quantum and geometrical fluctuations. By comparing the magnetic and specific-heat properties with those of the haydeeite, we suggest that α-Cu 3 Mg(OH) 6 Br 2 may be described by the two-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg kagome model and is in the region of the ferromagnetic-order side of the phase diagram.

Reorientation of antiferromagnetism in cobalt doped FeSn

FeSn is an itinerant antiferromagnet that hosts electronic Dirac states and ordered magnetic moments lying within its Fe Kagome-lattice planes. We present magnetization measurements of single crystals of (Fe 1-x Co x )Sn, revealing the evolution and suppression of this magnetic order with Co substitution. We interpret the dramatic changes in magnetic anisotropy to indicate a reorientation of the moments from perpendicular to parallel to the hexagonal c axis and confirm this with neutron diffraction. It has been proposed that the Dirac nodes observed in FeSn should become gapped if the moments rotate as our data suggests. We identify Co-substituted compositions that adopt both antiferromagnetic configurations at different temperatures. This system provides a unique opportunity to study how the details of magnetic order impact Dirac electron states.

K 2 CoS 2 : A two-dimensional in-plane antiferromagnetic insulator

Recent discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials has brought magnetism to the flatland and opened up exciting opportunities for the exploration of fundamental physics as well as novel device applications. Here, we predict a thermodynamically stable 2D magnetic material, ${\mathrm{K}}_{2}{\mathrm{CoS}}_{2}$, which retains its in-plane bulk antiferromagnetic (AFM) order down to the monolayer and bilayer limits. Magnetic moments $(2.5{{\mu}}_{B}/\mathrm{Co})$ are found to form a quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetically ordered chain of Co atoms. The nonmagnetic electronic spectrum of the monolayer film is found to host flatbands and van Hove singularities, which play a key role in stabilizing the magnetic ground state. Based on classical Monte Carlo simulations, we estimate the Neel temperature for the AFM monolayer to be ${\approx}15\mathrm{K}$. Our study demonstrates that ${\mathrm{K}}_{2}{\mathrm{CoS}}_{2}$ hosts a robust AFM state which persists from the monolayer limit to the bulk material.

Field-induced magnetic phase transitions and the resultant giant anomalous Hall effect in the antiferromagnetic half-Heusler compound DyPtBi

We report field-induced magnetic phase transitions and transport properties of antiferromagnetic DyPtBi. We show that DyPtBi hosts a delicate balance between two different magnetic ground states, which can be controlled by a moderate magnetic field. Furthermore, it exhibits giant anomalous Hall effect (σ A = 1540 Ω –1 cm –1 , θ AHE = 24%) in a field-induced type-I spin structure, presumably attributed to the enhanced Berry curvature associated with avoided band crossings near the Fermi energy and/or nonzero spin chirality. As a result, the latter mechanism points DyPtBi towards a rare potential realization of anomalous Hall effect in an antiferromagnet with face-centered-cubic lattice that was proposed.

Detection of uncompensated magnetization at the interface of an epitaxial antiferromagnetic insulator

We have probed directly the temperature and magnetic field dependence of pinned uncompensated magnetization at the interface of antiferromagnetic FeF 2 with Cu, using FeF 2 -Cu-Co spin valves. Electrons polarized by the Co layer are scattered by the pinned uncompensated moments at the FeF 2 -Cu interface giving rise to giant magnetoresistance. We determined the direction and magnitude of the pinned uncompensated magnetization at different magnetic fields and temperatures using the angular dependencies of resistance. The strong FeF 2 anisotropy pins the uncompensated magnetization along the easy axis independent of the cooling field orientation. Most interestingly, magnetic fields as high as 90 kOe cannot break the pinning at the FeF 2 -Cu interface. This proves that the pinned interfacial magnetization is strongly coupled to the antiferromagnetic order inside the bulk FeF 2 layer. Studies as a function of FeF2 crystalline orientation show that uncompensated spins are only detected in a spin valve with (110) crystal orientation, but not in valves containing FeF 2 (100) and FeF 2 (001). This observation is in agreement with symmetry-related considerations which predict the equilibrium boundary magnetization for the FeF 2 (110) layer.

Canted antiferromagnetism in the quasi-one-dimensional iron chalcogenide BaFe 2 Se 4

We report the synthesis and physical properties studies of quasi-one-dimensional (quais-1D) iron chalcogenide BaFe 2 Se 4 which shares the FeSe 4 tetrahedra building motif commonly seen in the iron chalcogenide superconductors. A high-quality polycrystalline sample was achieved by solid-state reaction method and characterized by x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and neutron diffraction measurements. BaFe 2 Se 4 is a narrow gap semiconductor that magnetically orders at ~310 K. Therefore, both neutron powder diffraction results and isothermal M-H loops suggest a canted antiferromagnetic structure where Fe sublattices are antiferromagnetically ordered along the c-axis quasi-1D chain direction, resulting in a net ferromagnetic moment in the perpendicular direction along the a axis with tilted angle of 18.7° towards the b axis.

Antiferromagnetism and crystalline electric field excitations in tetragonal NaCeO 2

In this work, we investigate the crystal structure, magnetic properties, and crystalline electric field of tetragonal, I 4 1 / a m d , Na Ce O 2 . In this compound, Ce 3 + ions form a tetragonally elongated diamond lattice coupled by antiferromagnetic interactions ( Θ CW = - 7.69 K) that magnetically order below T N = 3.18 K. The Ce 3 + J = 5 / 2 crystalline electric field-split multiplet is studied via inelastic neutron scattering to parametrize a J eff = 1 / 2 ground state doublet composed of states possessing mixed | m z ) character. Neutron powder diffraction data reveal the onset of A -type antiferromagnetism with μ = 0.57 ( 2 ) μ B moments aligned along the c axis. The magnetic structure is consistent with the expectations of a frustrated Heisenberg J 1 - J 2 model on the elongated diamond lattice with effective exchange values J 1 > 4 J 2 and J 1 > 0 .

Distinguishing antiferromagnetic spin sublattices via the spin Seebeck effect

We measured spin Seebeck signals at the top and bottom surfaces of an antiferromagnetic Cr 2 O 3 film, using a Pt/Cr 2 O 3 /Pt trilayer. Our experimental data, combined with micromagnetic simulations, clearly demonstrate that the uncompensated sublattice at the top and bottom surfaces plays a decisive role in determining the symmetry of the spin Seebeck signals, providing fundamental insight for understanding the generation of spin Seebeck signal in antiferromagnetic materials.

Observation of spontaneous x-ray magnetic circular dichroism in a chiral antiferromagnet

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) signals are usually absent in antiferromagnets. In this paper, we report the observation of spontaneous XMCD spectra originating from the inverse triangular spin structure, or the polarization of the cluster magnetic octupole, in the chiral antiferromagnet Mn 3 Sn thin film. Finally, the result is consistent with the recent theoretical predictions that the inverse triangular spin structure can give rise to finite XMCD signals in the absence of net magnetization [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn 89, 083703 (2020) and Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 157402 (2021)].

Physical properties of the quasi-two-dimensional square lattice antiferromagnet Ba 2 FeSi 2 O 7

In this work, we report magnetization (χ, M ), magnetic specific heat ( C M ), and neutron powder diffraction results on a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) S = 2 square lattice antiferromagnet Ba 2 FeSi 2 O 7 consisting of FeO 4 tetrahedrons with highly compressive tetragonal distortion (27%). Despite of the quasi-2D lattice structure, both χ and C M present three-dimensional magnetic long-range ordering below the Néel temperature T N = 5.2 K . Neutron diffraction data show a collinear Q m = (1,0,1/2) antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure below T N but the ordered moment aligned in the a b plane is suppressed by 26% from the ionic spin S = 2 value ( 4 μ B ). Both the AFM structure and the suppressed moments are well explained by using Monte Carlo simulations with a large single-ion in-plane anisotropy D = 1 .4 meV and a rather small Heisenberg exchange J intra = 0 .15 meV in the plane. The characteristic 2D spin fluctuations are recognized in the magnetic entropy release and diffuse scattering above T N . This new quasi-2D magnetic system also displays unusual nonmonotonic dependence of T N as a function of magnetic field H .

Slow spin dynamics and quantum tunneling of magnetization in the dipolar antiferromagnet DyScO 3

Here, we present a comprehensive study of static and dynamic magnetic properties in the Ising-like dipolar antiferromagnet (AFM) DyScO 3 by means of DC and AC magnetization measurements supported by classical Monte Carlo calculations. Our AC-susceptibility data show that the magnetic dynamics exhibit a clear crossover from an Arrhenius-like regime to quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) at T*=10K. Below T N =3.2K, DyScO 3 orders in an antiferromagnetic GxAy-type magnetic structure and the magnetization dynamics slow down to the minute timescale. The low-temperature magnetization curves exhibit complex hysteretic behavior, which depends strongly on the magnetic field sweep rate. We demonstrate that the low-field anomalies on the magnetization curve are related to the metamagnetic transition, while the hysteresis at higher fields is induced by a strong magnetocaloric effect. Our theoretical calculations, which take into account dipolar interaction between Dy 3+ moments, reproduce essential features of the magnetic behavior of DyScO 3 . We demonstrate that DyScO 3 represents a rare example of an inorganic compound, which exhibits QTM at a single-ion level and magnetic order due to classical dipolar interaction.

Spin excitations in the kagome-lattice metallic antiferromagnet Fe 0.89 Co 0.11 Sn

Kagome-lattice materials have attracted tremendous interest due to the broad prospect for seeking superconductivity, quantum spin liquid states, and topological electronic structures. Among them, the transition-metal kagome lattices are high-profile objects for the combination of topological properties, rich magnetism, and multiple-orbital physics. Here we report an inelastic neutron scattering study on the spin dynamics of a kagome-lattice antiferromagnetic metal Fe 0.89 Co 0.11 Sn. Although the magnetic excitations can be observed up to ~250 meV, well-defined spin waves are only identified below ~90 meV and can be modeled using Heisenberg exchange with ferromagnetic in-plane nearest-neighbor coupling J 1 , in-plane next-nearest-neighbor coupling J 2 , and antiferromagnetic (AFM) interlayer coupling J c under linear spin-wave theory. Above ~90 meV, the spin waves enter the itinerant Stoner continuum and become highly damped particle-hole excitations. At the K point of the Brillouin zone, we reveal a possible band crossing of the spin wave, which indicates a potential Dirac magnon. Finally, our results uncover the evolution of the spin excitations from the planar AFM state to the axial AFM state in Fe 0.89 Co 0.11 Sn, solve the magnetic Hamiltonian for both states, and confirm the significant influence of the itinerant magnetism on the spin excitations.

Weak trimerization in the frustrated two-dimensional triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3

To understand the 2D triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnetic system, we investigated the magnetic structures and the dynamics of Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3 in detail. The substitutions are adjusted to the Mn atomic position close to x Mn =$\frac{1}{3}$. The neutron powder diffraction data claims that the magnetic structure of Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3 is described as a mixture of Γ 3 (P6' 3 cm') and Γ 4 (P6' 3 c'm) at the x Mn position for y=0.15, 0.30, and 0.45. The ratio of Γ 3 and Γ 4 depends on temperature and composition and the fraction of Γ 3 increases upon cooling, while no clear trimerization was observed at the xMn position. We estimated exchange parameters from the analysis of the low-energy part of the spin waves. The results showed a weak trimerization effect on cooling because the nearest-neighbor exchange interaction is slightly enhanced. The temperature dependence of the spin-wave dispersion around the Γ point shows that the spin gap closes with increasing temperature because the exchange interactions in the nearest Mn-Mn neighbor become smaller. Gapless diffusive magnetic excitation from a Mn triangular lattice has been observed in a wide range in Q and E space of Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3 . We found that Lu 0.3 Y 0.7 MnO 3 could be an ideal case to investigate the trimerization, frustrated magnetism, and magnetoelastic coupling often observed in two-dimensional triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet systems.

Microscopic characterization of the magnetic properties of the itinerant antiferromagnet La 2 Ni 7 by La 139 NMR/NQR measurements

In this study, 139 La nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements have been performed to investigate the magnetic properties of the itinerant magnet La 2 Ni 7 , which shows a series of antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transitions at T N1 = 61 K, T N2 = 56 K, and T N3 = 42 K under zero magnetic field. Two distinct La NMR signals were observed due to the two crystallographically inequivalent La sites in La 2 Ni 7 (La1 and La2 in the La 2 Ni 4 and the LaNi 5 subunits of the La 2 Ni 7 unit cell, respectively). From the 139 La NQR spectrum in the AFM state below T N3 , the AFM state was revealed to be a commensurate state where Ni-ordered moments align along the crystalline c axis. Owing to the two different La sites, we were able to estimate the average values of the Ni-ordered moments (0.09 – 0.10 μB / Ni and 0.17 μB / Ni around La1 and La2, respectively) from 139 La NMR spectrum measurements in the AFM state below T N3 , suggesting a nonuniform distribution of the Ni-ordered moments in the AFM state. In contrast, a more uniform distribution of the Ni-ordered moments in the saturated paramagnetic state induced by the application of high magnetic fields is observed. The temperature dependence of the sublattice magnetization measured by the internal magnetic induction at the La2 site in the AFM state was reproduced by a local-moment model better than the self-consistent renormalization (SCR) theory for weak itinerant antiferromagnets. Given the small Ni-ordered moments in the magnetically ordered state, our results suggest that La 2 Ni 7 has characteristics of both itinerant nature and localized nature in its magnetism. With this in mind, it is noteworthy that the temperature dependence of nuclear spin-relaxation rates (1/T 1 ) in the paramagnetic state above T N1 measured at zero magnetic field can be explained qualitatively by both the SCR theory and the local-moment model.

Effect of random antiferromagnetic exchange on the spin waves in a three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet

Neutron scattering is used to study spin waves in the three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet YTiO 3 , with spin-spin exchange disorder introduced via La substitution at the Y site. No significant changes are observed in the spin-wave dispersion up to a La concentration of 20%. However, a strong broadening of the spectrum is found, indicative of shortened spin-wave lifetimes. Density-functional theory calculations predict minimal changes in exchange constants as a result of average structural changes due to La substitution, in agreement with the data. The absence of significant changes in the spin-wave dispersion, the considerable lifetime effect, and the reduced ordered magnetic moment previously observed in the La-substituted system are qualitatively captured by an isotropic, nearest-neighbor, three-dimensional Furthermore, Heisenberg ferromagnet model with random antiferromagnetic exchange. We therefore establish Y 1-$x$ La $x$ TiO 3 as a model system for the study of antiferromagnetic spin-exchange disorder in a three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet.

Antiferromagnetic order in the layered magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 ⁢Se 4 probed by resonant soft x-ray scattering

The quasi-two-dimensional magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Se 4 , stabilized via nonequilibrium molecular beam epitaxy, is investigated by resonant soft x-ray scattering. Kiessig fringes are observed, confirming a high sample quality and a thin film thickness of 10 septuple layers (∼13 nm). An antiferromagnetic Bragg peak is observed at the structurally forbidden reflection, whose magnetic nature is validated by studying its temperature, energy, and polarization dependence. Through a detailed analysis, an A-type antiferromagetic order with in-plane moments is implied. This alternative spin structure in MnBi 2 Se 4 , in contrast to the Ising antiferromagnetic states in other magnetic topological insulators, might be relevant for hosting new topological states.

Lattice and magnetic structure in the van der Waals antiferromagnet VBr 3

Here, we report a comprehensive investigation of the lattice and magnetic structure in van der Waals antiferromagnet VBr 3 , characterized by a BiI 3 -type structure at room temperature. Neutron diffraction experiments were performed on both polycrystalline and single-crystalline VBr 3 samples, revealing clear magnetic Bragg peaks emerging below the Néel temperature of T N =26.5 K. These magnetic Bragg peaks can be indexed by k=(0, 0.5, 1) in hexagonal notation. Our refinement analysis suggests that the antiferromagnetic order in VBr 3 manifests as a zigzag structure. Moreover, we observed peak splitting for nuclear Bragg peaks in the HK plane below the structure transition temperature of T S =90.4 K, indicating the breaking of threefold symmetry within the ab plane.

Anomalous temperature-dependent magnetization in the nearly collinear antiferromagnet Y 2 Co 3

Y 2 Co 3 is a newly discovered antiferromagnetic (AFM) compound with distorted kagome layers. Here, previous investigations via bulk magnetization measurements suggested a complex non-collinear magnetic behavior, with magnetic moments primarily anti-aligned along the b axis and some canting towards the ac plane. In this study, we report the magnetic structure of Y 2 Co 3 to be an A-type AFM structure with ferromagnetic (FM) interactions within the distorted kagome plane and an inter-plane antiferromagnetic interaction, as determined by single crystal neutron diffraction. The magnetic moments align along the b axis, with minimal canting towards the c axis, at odds with the previous interpretation of bulk magnetization measurements. The magnetic moments on the two distinct Co sites are (0, -0.68, 0) μB and (0, 1.25, 0.07) μ B . We attribute the previously reported ”non-collinear” behavior to the considerable temperature dependence of itinerant AFM exchange interactions, induced by thermal contraction along the b axis. Additionally, our examination of lattice constants through pressure studies reveals compensating effects on FM and AFM interactions, resulting in negligible pressure dependence of T N .
