A U.S. Scientific Community Vision for Sustained Earth Observations of Greenhouse Gases to Support Local to Global Action

Managing carbon stocks in the land, ocean, and atmosphere under changing climate requires a globally‐integrated view of carbon cycle processes at local and regional scales. The growing Earth Observation (EO) record is the backbone of this multi‐scale system, providing local information with discrete coverage from surface measurements and regional information at global scale from satellites. Carbon flux information, anchored by inverse estimates from spaceborne Greenhouse Gas (GHG) concentrations, provides an important top‐down view of carbon emissions and sinks, but currently lacks global continuity at assessment and management scales (<100 km). Partial‐column data can help separate signals in the boundary layer from the overlying atmosphere, providing an opportunity to enhance surface sensitivity and bring flux resolution down from that of column‐integrated data (100–500 km). Based on a workshop held in September 2024, the carbon cycle community envisions a carbon observation system leveraging GHG partial columns in the lower and upper troposphere to weave together information across scales from surface and satellite EO data, and integration of top‐down/bottom‐up analyses to link process understanding to global assessment.

Automatic detection of methane emissions in multispectral satellite imagery using a vision transformer

Curbing methane emissions is among the most effective actions that can be taken to slow down global warming. However, monitoring emissions remains challenging, as detection methods have a limited quantification completeness due to trade-offs that have to be made between coverage, resolution and detection accuracy. Here we show that deep learning can overcome the trade-off in terms of spectral resolution that comes with multi-spectral satellite data, resulting in a methane detection tool with global coverage and high temporal and spatial resolution. We compare our detections with airborne methane measurement campaigns, which suggests that our method can detect methane point sources in Sentinel-2 data down to plumes of 0.01 km 2 , corresponding to 200 to 300 kg CH 4 /h -1 sources. Our model shows an order of magnitude improvement over the state-of-the-art, providing a significant step towards the automated, high resolution detection of methane emissions at a global scale, every few days.

A million persons, a million dreams: a vision for a national center of radiation epidemiology and biology

Epidemiologic studies of radiation-exposed populations form the basis for human safety standards. Furthermore, they also help shape public health policy and evidence-based health practices by identifying and quantifying health risks of exposure in defined populations. For more than a century, epidemiologists have studied the consequences of radiation exposures, yet the health effects of low levels delivered at a low-dose rate remain equivocal.

Driver Distraction Behavior Detection using a Vision Transformer Model based on Transfer Learning Strategy

Driver distraction behavior is one of the critical factors in traffic accidents. Thus, advanced driver state detection system has become the focus in the field of intelligent vehicle. However, in practical applications, insufficient samples of driving distraction behaviors bring great challenges to training a personalized behavior distraction detection model for a specific driver. To this end, a novel transformer model based on a transfer learning strategy is proposed in this paper to accurately recognize driver distraction behavior. Inspired by the effect of the transformer network in visual recognition, we firstly present a transformer behavior distraction detection system to identify the behavior categories that cause driver distraction. Then, for the specific driving dataset in practical application scenarios, the transfer learning strategy is introduced into the driver distraction detection model to further train the general transformer network. The effectiveness of the transformer based on the transfer learning strategy is validated compared with other traditional deep learning methods. The results show that the proposed detection method has better generalization ability and higher accuracy.

Advanced Synchrophasor-based Application for Potential Distributed Energy Resources Management: Key Technology, Challenge and Vision

With an increasing number of distributed energy resources (DERs) integrating into the power system, the power grid is becoming more complex and uncertain. Owing to most of DERs are through grid-connected converters to integrate into the power system, the intermittent nature and resource-depended characteristic of the DERs are challenging their monitoring and control. Conventional synchronized measurement devices (SMDs) may be difficult to provide qualified data for DERs management for its accuracy and reporting-rate limitation. The monitoring systems developed basing on SMDs may be insufficient for depicting detailed dynamic manifestations of power systems with a high proportion integration of DERs. This paper shares some advanced synchrophasor-based applications developed in FNET/GridEye, which have a broad prospect for assisting system operator on the control and integration of the DERs.

Generalized and Mechanistic PV Module Performance Prediction From Computer Vision and Machine Learning on Electroluminescence Images

Electroluminescence (EL) imaging of photovoltiac (PV) modules offers high-speed, high-resolution information about device performance, affording opportunities for greater insight and efficiency in module characterization across manufacturing, research and development, and power plant operations and management. Predicting module electrical properties from EL image features is a critical step toward these applications. In this article, we demonstrate quantification of both generalized and performance mechanism-specific EL image features, using pixel intensity-based and machine learning classification algorithms. From EL image features, we build predictive models for PV module power and series resistance, using time-series current-voltage (I-V) and EL data obtained stepwise on five brands of modules spanning three Si cell types through two accelerated exposures: damp heat (DH) (85°C/85% RH) and thermal cycling (TC) (IEC 61215). Overall, 195 pairs of EL images and I-V characteristics were analyzed, yielding 11700 individual PV cell images. A convolutional neural network was built to classify cells by the severity of busbar corrosion with high accuracy (95%). Generalized power predictive models estimated the maximum power of PV modules from EL images with high confidence and an adjusted-R 2 of 0.88, across all module brands and cell types in extended DH and TC exposures. Mechanistic degradation prediction was demonstrated by quantification of busbar corrosion in EL images of three module brands in DH, and subsequent modeling of series resistance using these mechanism-specific EL image features. For modules exhibiting busbar corrosion, we demonstrated series resistance predictive models with adjusted-R 2 of up to 0.73.

Vision Foundation Models in Remote Sensing: A survey

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have profoundly transformed the field of remote sensing (RS), revolutionizing data collection, processing, and analysis. Traditionally reliant on manual interpretation and task-specific models, RS research has been significantly enhanced by the advent of foundation models (FMs)—large-scale pretrained AI models capable of performing a wide array of tasks with unprecedented accuracy and efficiency. This article provides a comprehensive survey of FMs in the RS domain. We categorize these models based on their architectures, pretraining datasets, and methodologies. Through detailed performance comparisons, we highlight emerging trends and the significant advancements achieved by those FMs. Additionally, we discuss technical challenges, practical implications, and future research directions, addressing the need for high-quality data, computational resources, and improved model generalization. Our research also finds that pretraining methods, particularly self-supervised learning (SSL) techniques like contrastive learning (CL) and masked autoencoders (MAEs), remarkably enhance the performance and robustness of FMs. This survey aims to serve as a resource for researchers and practitioners by providing a panorama of advances and promising pathways for the continued development and application of FMs in RS.

A linear collider vision for the future of particle physics

In this paper we review the physics opportunities at linear e + e - colliders with a special focus on high centre-of-mass energies and beam polarisation, take a fresh look at the various accelerator technologies available or under development and, for the first time, discuss how a facility first equipped with a technology that is mature today could be upgraded with technologies of tomorrow to reach much higher energies and/or luminosities. In addition, we discuss detectors, alternative collider modes, as well as opportunities for beyond-collider experiments and R&D facilities as part of a linear collider facility (LCF). The material of this paper supports all plans for e + e - linear colliders and the additional opportunities they offer, independently of technology choice or proposed site, as well as R&D for advanced accelerator technologies. This joint perspective on the physics goals, early technologies and upgrade strategies has been developed by the LCVision team based on an initial discussion at LCWS2024 in Tokyo and a follow-up at the LCVision Community Event at CERN in January 2025. It heavily builds on decades of achievements of the global linear collider community, in particular in the context of CLIC and ILC.

A vision of immuno-oncology: the Siena think tank of the Italian Network for Tumor Biotherapy (NIBIT) foundation

The yearly Think Tank Meeting of the Italian Network for Tumor Biotherapy (NIBIT) Foundation, brings together in Siena, Tuscany (Italy), experts in immuno-oncology to review the learnings from current immunotherapy treatments, and to propose new pre-clinical and clinical investigations in selected research areas. While immunotherapies in non-small cell lung cancer and melanoma led to practice changing therapies, the same therapies had only modest benefit for patients with other malignancies, such as mesothelioma and glioblastoma. One way to improve on current immunotherapies is to alter the sequence of each combination agent. Matching the immunotherapy to the host’s immune response may thus improve the activity of the current treatments. A second approach is to combine current immunotherapies with novel agents targeting complementary mechanisms. Identifying the appropriate novel agents may require different approaches than the traditional laboratory-based discovery work. For example, artificial intelligence-based research may help focusing the search for innovative and most promising combination partners. Novel immunotherapies are needed in cancer patients with resistance to or relapse after current immunotherapeutic drugs. Such new treatments may include targeted agents or monoclonal antibodies to overcome the immune-suppressive tumor microenvironment. The mode of combining the novel treatments, including vaccines, needs to be matched to the patient’s immune status for achieving the maximum benefit. In this scenario, specific attention should be also paid nowadays to the immune intersection between COVID-19 and cancer.
