X-ray sources in stellar winds

A model of a binary X-ray source immersed in a stellar wind from its companion star is considered. The geometry of the constant ionization and temperature contours in the model is discussed, and X-ray radiative transfer through the wind is described. The results are applied to make predictions about the presence and variability of iron K-shell fluorescence lines, to explain the light curve of Cen X-3 during a 'low' to 'high' state transition in July 1972, and to predict variability with orbital phase of resonance ultraviolet lines such as N V at 1238 and 1242 A from the binary system.

Mars - Photodesorption from mineral surfaces and its effects on atmospheric stability

Kinetic constraints are employed to identify the reactive chemisorbed complexes, to describe the mechanism of UV-accelerated desorption from Fe (+2) on mineral surfaces, and to estimate the photodesorption rate on Mars. In particular, it is proposed that gases such as O2, CO2, CO, H2O and N2 undergo an adsorption-desorption process at octahedrally coordinated Fe (+2) surface sites to produce seven-coordinate transition-state complexes. The ligand field stabilization energy acquired by these complexes lies between 16 and 18 kcal per mole. Published photocatalysis data are used to assess the role of photodesorption in Martian atmospheric chemistry and stability.

The epoch state navigation filter

The formulation of a recursive maximum likelihood navigation system employing reference position and velocity vectors as state variables is presented. Convenient forms of the required variational equations of motion are developed together with an explicit form of the associated state transition matrix needed to refer measurement data from the measurement time to the epoch time. Computational advantages accrue from this design in that the usual forward extrapolation of the covariance matrix of estimation errors can be avoided without incurring unacceptable system errors. Simulation data for earth orbiting satellites are provided to substantiate this assertion.

A triangular covariance factorization for sequential filtering algorithms

A method for propagating the square-root of the state error covariance matrix in lower triangular UDU form is described. This update method can be combined with the UDU transformation used by Bierman to obtain the equations of a square-root free triangular estimation algorithm. The method is compared with the state transition matrix time update algorithm on the basis of integration accuracy, computational efficiency and storage requirements.

Phased models for evaluating the performability of computing systems

A phase-by-phase modelling technique is introduced to evaluate a fault tolerant system's ability to execute different sets of computational tasks during different phases of the control process. Intraphase processes are allowed to differ from phase to phase. The probabilities of interphase state transitions are specified by interphase transition matrices. Based on constraints imposed on the intraphase and interphase transition probabilities, various iterative solution methods are developed for calculating system performability.

Sequential triangulation of orbital photography

The feasibility of structuring the satellite photogrammetric triangulation as an iterative Extended Kalman estimation algorithm is demonstrated. Comparative numerical results of the sequential against batch estimation algorithm are presented. Difficulty of accurately modeling of the attitude motion is overcome by utilizing the on-board angular rate measurements. Solutions of the differential equations and the evaluation of state transition matrix are carried out numerically.

Optimization of multiple flyby trajectories

A procedure has been developed which minimizes total delta-V (instantaneous velocity change) for a multiple flyby trajectory with constraints on flyby altitude and orientation. The solution is found by varying the locations of maneuver points between each flyby to minimize the delta-Vs at the maneuver points. Each trajectory segment connecting consecutive maneuver points is found by solving an N-body analog to Lambert's problem. Multiconic techniques are used for trajectory propagation and for computation of the state transition matrix. The constrained parameter optimization problem is converted to an unconstrained problem by means of penalty functions and then solved with a quasi-Newton algorithm utilizing analytic first derivatives. This procedure has been successfully applied to Galileo satellite tour trajectories.

A search for experiments to exploit the space shuttle environment, volume 1

A search for worthwhile experiments in pure and applied physics and chemistry which might take advantage of conditions achievable aboard the space shuttle is documented. Of particular interest were the very large pumping speeds at high or ultra high vacuum, the highly nonequilibrium composition of the ambient atmosphere, and the relative absence of gravitational effects. Ideas and suggestions were solicated in the course of visits to 31 research establishments in Western Europe, India, and Japan; conversations with over 90 scientists; and presentations at 3 international meetings. Intriguing possibilities emerged in the following arenas: (1) spectroscopy of the transition state in chemical reactions; (2) flame structure and analysis; (3) solid propellant combustion; (4) analysis of atmospheric composition; (5) turbulence effects on aerosol coagulation.

Detection of the 610 micron /492 GHz/ line of interstellar atomic carbon

The ground-state transition of neutral atomic carbon, 3P1-3P0, has been detected in the interstellar medium at the frequency of 492.162 GHz determined in the laboratory by Saykally and Evenson (1980). The observations were made from the NASA Kuiper Airborne Observatory using an InSb heterodyne bolometer receiver. The line was detected as strong emission from eight molecular clouds and apparently provides a widely useful probe of the interstellar medium.

A new method for optimizing multiple flyby trajectories

A new procedure has been developed which minimizes total impulsive Delta V for multiple flyby trajectories with constraints on flyby parameters and maneuver times. The method involves solving a bounds-constrained parameter optimization problem with a Newton algorithm utilizing analytic first and second derivatives. Each trajectory segment connecting consecutive maneuver points is found by first targeting from the preceding maneuver point to the parameters of the upcoming flyby and then propagating the resulting trajectory to the next maneuver point. Multi-conic techniques are used for trajectory propagation and for computation of the state transition matrix. This procedure has successfully optimized Galileo satellite tours containing up to 11 flybys.

A molecular beam investigation of the oxidation of CO on Pt/9/111/x/100//

The CO oxidation on Pt/9(111)x(100)/ was studied by molecular beam relaxation spectroscopy (MBRS). The reaction proceeded via the reaction of adsorbed CO and adsorbed oxygen. No evidence for direct reactive collisions between gaseous CO and adsorbed atomic oxygen was seen. The second order rate constant was measured by linearizing the reaction system to be 10 to the -7th exp/-(9700 kcal/mole)RT/ per sq cm s. The relatively low pre-exponential factor was explained by transition state theory on the basis of a high partition function for adsorbed carbon monoxide obtained previously from studies of CO desorption on this surface.

Line parameters of methane from 2385 to 3200/cm

A list of new methane line parameters for the 2385-3200 cm region included in the Air Force Geophysical Laboratory's compilation of molecular line parameters is presented. Line positions were determined by computer computations from Fourier transform spectrometer data using a Kitt Peak subroutine. With the exception of class IV lines, all line strengths were determined by the method of equivalent widths. Additional line strengths were measured from spectra taken at cold sample temperatures so that lower state transition energies could be determined experimentally. Observed line positions and strengths are given for 8076 absorptions with strengths greater than 3.3 x 10 to the -24 cm/molecule.

The ground state far infrared spectrum of NH3

The NH3 far infrared spectrum is particularly useful for the study of planetary composition and atmospheric dynamics. Studies of this spectrum were conducted by Dowling (1969), Helminger et al. (1971), and Urban et al. (1981). Sattler et al. (1981) have reported measurements of a few nu2 lines with tunable diode lasers. By using simple sum rules, these lines and accurate ground state inversion lines considered by Poynter and Kakar (1975) have been employed in the present investigation to deduce a few of the far infrared ground state transitions. An extensive set of high signal/noise, high resolution (0.0048 per cm) scans of the nu2 bands of NH3 from about 600 per cm through about 1300 per cm ait a series of low pressures have been made in order to accurately determine both the line positions and strengths. The obtained data provide line positions with an absolute accuracy of about 0.0001 per cm in the more favorable cases.

The operational states of the system are defined and the single-step state transition diagrams discussed. Graphical results, showing the impact of major system parameters on the reliability of the RSDIMU system, are presented and discussed.

The containment set approach to digital system tolerance of lightning-induced transient faults

A fault model and a system model are necessary to assess the tolerance or resilience of a digital system to lightning-induced transients. It is noted that these models are usually developed separately. A new approach is outlined here for this assessment problem which combines the fault and system models into an overall model. With this approach, referred to as the containment set approach, an assessment of the effects of lightning-induced transients can be made in terms of a state transition matrix. This matrix can be generated by means of fault injection experiments. In addition, certain nonredundancy-oriented design alternatives to the achievement of lightning-induced transient tolerance in digital systems are indicated by the containment set approach.

Hydrogen atom abstraction from aldehydes - OH + H2CO and O + H2CO

The essential features of the potential energy surfaces governing hydrogen abstraction from formaldehyde by oxygen atom and hydroxyl radical have been characterized with ab inito multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock (MCHF) and configuration interaction (CI) wave functions. The results are consistent with a very small activation energy for the OH + H2CO reaction, and an activation energy of a few kcal/mol for the O + H2CO reaction. In the transition state structure of both systems, the attacking oxygen atom is nearly collinear with the attacked CH bond.

Identification and properties of molecular systems of potential use in solar-pumped lasers

The concepts and computational tools of theortical chemistry are used to investigate molecular properties needed in direct solar-pumped lasers. Compounds of the type RR'CXY, with R and R' organic groups, and X and Y halide atoms were identified as likely candidates because of their highly enhanced absorption coefficients over compounds with a single halide atom. The use of a combination of vibrational excitation followed by electronic excitation to enhance quantum yields at certain wavelengths is indicated. A self-consistent eikonal approximation to state-to-state transitions was tested for CH3I and is useful for other problems involving electronic energy and charge transfer. An approach to calculate potential energy surfaces and transition dipoles was developed which is based on the generation of eigenstates of the nonrelativisitc Hamiltonian followed by incorporation of the spin-orbit coupling by configuration interaction.
