Revealing the Origin of Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking in Fe-Chalcogenide Superconductor FeTe 1 - x Se x

We report that recently evidence has emerged in the topological superconductor Fe-chalcogenide FeTe 1-x Se x for time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB), the nature of which has strong implications on the Majorana zero modes (MZM) discovered in this system. It remains unclear however whether the TRSB resides in the topological surface state (TSS) or in the bulk, and whether it is due to an unconventional TRSB superconducting order parameter or an intertwined order. Here by performing in superconducting FeTe 1-x Se x crystals both surface-magneto-optic-Kerr effect (SMOKE) measurements using a Sagnac interferometer and bulk magnetic susceptibility measurements, we pinpoint the TRSB to the TSS, where we also detect a Dirac gap. Further, we observe surface TRSB in non-superconducting FeTe 1-x Se x of nominally identical composition, indicating that TRSB arises from an intertwined surface ferromagnetic (FM) order. The observed surface FM bears striking similarities to the two-dimensional (2D) FM found in 2D van der Waals crystals, and is highly sensitive to the exact chemical composition, thereby providing a means for optimizing the conditions for Majorana particles that are useful for robust quantum computing.

CsV 3 Sb 5 : A $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Topological Kagome Metal with a Superconducting Ground State

Recently discovered alongside its sister compounds KV 3 Sb 5 and RbV 3 Sb 5 , CsV 3 Sb 5 crystallizes with an ideal kagome network of vanadium and antimonene layers separated by alkali metal ions. This work presents the electronic properties of CsV 3 Sb 5 , demonstrating bulk superconductivity in single crystals with a T c = 2.5 K. The normal state electronic structure is studied via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density-functional theory, which categorize CsV 3 Sb 5 as a Z 2 topological metal. Multiple protected Dirac crossings are predicted in close proximity to the Fermi level (E F ), and signatures of normal state correlation effects are also suggested by a high-temperature charge density wavelike instability. Finally, the implications for the formation of unconventional superconductivity in this material are discussed.

Flux-Switching Machine Based All-Electric Power Train for Future Aircraft

This research investigates a flux-switching motor with superconducting and cryogenically cooled windings, aimed at achieving exceptionally high power densities. In addition to the motor’s topology and superconducting windings, it was found that power density could be further enhanced by incorporating superconducting shields on the rotor at the interpole locations. The resulting publications and patented technology outline the design process. A motor power density of 64 kW/kg—including housing materials—was achieved for a 1 MW design, surpassing the performance of existing motors. An electronic drive was also developed, achieving a power density of 47 kW/kg. This includes the mechanical structure of the drivetrain, for which a detailed CAD model was created, resulting in an overall drivetrain power density of 27 kW/kg.

Full superconducting gap in the candidate topological superconductor In 1-x Pb x Te for x = 0.2

High-pressure synthesis techniques have allowed for the growth of samples on the indium-rich side of (Pb,In)Te, which have increased superconducting transition temperatures compared to lead-rich compounds. Here, we present measurements of the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth Δλ(T) in the compound In 0.8 Pb 0.2 Te, which shows a bulk T c,onset of ~ 4.75 K. The results indicate fully gapped BCS-like behavior, ruling out odd-parity topologically nontrivial A 2u , pairing, however, odd-parity A 1u , pairing is still possible. Critical field values measured below 1 K and other superconducting parameters are also presented.

Synthesis of Narrow SnTe Nanowires Using Alloy Nanoparticles

Topological crystalline insulator tin telluride (SnTe) provides a rich playground to examine interactions of correlated electronic states, such as ferroelectricity, topological surface states, and superconductivity. The study of SnTe nanowires may lead to even richer physics owing to the one-dimensional (1D) confinement effect and an increased contribution from the topological surface states. Thus, for transport measurements, SnTe nanowires must be synthesized with reduced diameters and high crystalline quality to ensure 1D confinement and phase coherence of the topological surface electrons. Here, we report a facile growth method to produce narrow SnTe nanowires with a high yield using alloy nanoparticles as growth catalysts. The average diameter of the SnTe nanowires grown using alloy nanoparticles is 85 nm, nearly a factor of three reduction compared to the average diameter of 240 nm when using gold nanoparticles as growth catalysts. Transport measurements reveal the effect of the nanowire diameter on the residual resistance ratio and magnetoresistance. Particularly, the ferroelectric transition temperature for SnTe evolves systematically with the nanowire diameter. In situ cryogenic cooling of narrow SnTe nanowires in a transmission electron microscope directly reveals the cubic to rhombohedral structural transition, which is associated with the ferroelectric transition. Thus, these narrow SnTe nanowires represent a model system to study electronic states arising from 1D confinement, such as 1D topological superconductivity and potential multiband superconductivity.

Controllable superconducting to semiconducting phase transition in topological superconductor 2M-WS 2

The investigation of exotic properties in two-dimensional (2D) topological superconductors has garnered increasing attention in condensed matter physics, particularly for applications in topological qubits. Despite this interest, a reliable way of fabricating topological Josephson junctions (JJs) utilizing topological superconductors has yet to be demonstrated. Controllable structural phase transition presents a unique approach to achieving topological JJs in atomically thin 2D topological superconductors. In this work, we report the pioneering demonstration of a structural phase transition from the superconducting to the semiconducting phase in the 2D topological superconductor 2M-WS 2 . We reveal that the metastable 2M phase of WS 2 remains stable in ambient conditions but transitions to the 2H phase when subjected to temperatures above 150°C. We further locally induced the 2H phase within 2M-WS 2 nanolayers using laser irradiation. Notably, the 2H phase region exhibits a hexagonal shape, and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) uncovers an atomically sharp crystal structural transition between the 2H and 2M phase regions. Moreover, the 2M to 2H phase transition can be induced at the nanometer scale by a 200 keV electron beam. The electrical transport measurements further confirmed the superconductivity of the pristine 2M-WS 2 and the semiconducting behavior of the laser-irradiated 2M-WS 2 . Furthermore, our results establish a novel approach for controllable topological phase change in 2D topological superconductors, significantly impacting the development of atomically scaled planar topological JJs.

Majorana corner states on the dice lattice

Lattice geometry continues providing exotic topological phases in condensed matter physics. Exciting recent examples are the higher-order topological phases, manifesting via localized lower-dimensional boundary states. Moreover, flat electronic bands with a non-trivial topology arise in various lattices and can hold a finite superfluid density, bounded by the Chern number C . Here we consider attractive interaction in the dice lattice that hosts flat bands with C = ± 2 and show that the induced superconducting state exhibits a second-order topological phase with mixed singlet-triplet pairing. The second-order nature of the topological superconducting phase is revealed by the zero-energy Majorana bound states at the lattice corners. Hence, the topology of the normal state dictates the nature of the Majorana localization. These findings suggest that flat bands with a higher Chern number provide feasible platforms for inducing higher-order topological superconductivity.

Anomalous superconductivity in twisted MoTe 2 nanojunctions

Introducing superconductivity in topological materials can lead to innovative electronic phases and device functionalities. Here, we present a unique strategy for quantum engineering of superconducting junctions in moiré materials through direct, on-chip, and fully encapsulated 2D crystal growth. We achieve robust and designable superconductivity in Pd-metalized twisted bilayer molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe 2 ) and observe anomalous superconducting effects in high-quality junctions across ~20 moiré cells. Unexpectedly, the junction develops enhanced, instead of weakened, superconducting behaviors, exhibiting fluctuations to a higher critical magnetic field compared to its adjacent Pd 7 MoTe 2 superconductor. In addition, the critical current further exhibits a notable V-shaped minimum at zero magnetic field. These features are unexpected in conventional Josephson junctions and absent in junctions of natural bilayer MoTe 2 created using the same approach. We discuss implications of these observations, including the possible formation of mixed even- and odd-parity superconductivity at the moiré junctions. Our results also demonstrate a pathway to engineer and investigate superconductivity in fractional Chern insulators.

Twofold symmetry of proximity-induced superconductivity in Bi 2 Te 3 / Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + δ heterostructures revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy

We observe proximity-induced superconductivity in in situ prepared heterostructures constructed by topological insulator Bi 2 Te 3 thin films and high-temperature cuprate superconductors Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ . The superconducting gap maximum is about 7.6 meV on the surface of Bi 2 Te 3 thin films with a thickness of two quintuple layers, and the gap value decreases with an increase in the film thickness. Moreover, the quasiparticle interference data show clear evidence of a twofold symmetric superconducting gap with gap minima along one pair of the principal crystalline axes of Bi 2 Te 3 . This gap form is consistent with the Δ 4y notation of the topological superconductivity proposed in such systems. Our results provide fruitful information on the possible topological superconductivity induced by the proximity effect in high-temperature superconducting cuprates.

Disorder-induced topological phase transition in a driven Majorana chain

Here, we study a periodically driven one-dimensional Kitaev model in the presence of disorder. In the clean limit our model exhibits four topological phases corresponding to the existence or nonexistence of edge modes at zero and π quasienergy. When potential disorder is added, the system parameters get renormalized and the system may exhibit a topological phase transition. When starting from the Majorana π mode (MPM) phase, which hosts only edge Majoranas with quasienergy π, disorder induces a transition into a neighboring phase with both π and zero modes on the edges. We characterize the disordered system using (i) exact diagonalization, (ii) Arnoldi mapping onto an effective tight-binding chain, and (iii) topological entanglement entropy.

Superconducting properties and gap structure of the topological superconductor candidate Ti 3 Sb

Here, we present a study of the superconducting properties of the candidate topological superconductor Ti 3 Sb. Electrical transport measurements show zero resistance with a T c,onset of ≈ 5.9 K with a transition width ΔT c ≈ 0.6 K. The superconducting phase boundaries as derived from magnetotransport and magnetic susceptibility measurements agree well. We estimate an upper critical field B c2 (0) ≈ 4.5 T. A Ginzburg-Landau (GL) analysis yields values of the coherence length and penetration depth of ξ = 6.2 nm and λ = 340 nm, respectively, and a GL parameter κ ≈ 55, indicating extreme type-II behavior. Furthermore, we observe a step height in the specific heat $\frac{Δ C_e}{γ T_c}$ ≈ 1.61 ± 0.24 (with T c = 4.8 ± 0.4 K), a value larger than the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer value of 1.43, suggesting modest coupling. Measurements of the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth via the tunnel-diode oscillator technique down to ≈ 450 mK show a full superconducting gap, consistent with a conventional s-wave gap structure.

Large magnetoresistance and quantum oscillations observed in superconducting β -IrSn 4

Diverse quantum phenomena have been observed in TSn 4 transition metal (T) stannides, including superconductivity, nontrivial topology, and large magnetoresistance (MR) at low temperatures. Here, we report the experimental and theoretical investigation of tetragonal β-IrSn 4 (space group I 4 1 /acd) with the lattice parameters a = 6.362(3) Å and c = 22.723(0) Å. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity indicates that β-IrSn 4 is a good metal with Fermi-liquid behavior above the superconducting transition at T c ∼ 0.7 K. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate it is non-magnetic. However, positive transverse MR with linear field dependence is observed. At T= 2 K and Μ 0 H = 14 T, the MR reaches 700% without sign of saturation. Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations are observed from proximity detector oscillator measurements up to 60 T. We experimentally extract several frequencies, and through comparison to first-principles calculations, identify corresponding electronic bands. For H // c, two strong oscillations, F 1 ≈ 109 and F 2 ≈ 302 T, allow us to determine effective masses 0.266m 0 and 0.300m 0 (m 0 is the free-electron mass), respectively. The topology of these bands is discussed.

Supercurrent-induced topological phase transitions

We show that finite current in superconductors can induce topological phase transitions, as a result of the deformation of the quasiparticle spectrum by a finite center-of-mass (COM) momentum of the Cooper pairs. To show the wide applicability of this mechanism, we examine the topological properties of three prototypical systems: the Kitaev chain, s-wave superconductors, and d-wave superconductors. Here we introduce a finite COM momentum as an external field corresponding to the supercurrent and show that all the models exhibit current-induced topological phase transitions. We also discuss the possibility of observing the phase transitions in experiments and the relation to the other finite COM momentum pairing states.

Revealing a 3D Fermi Surface Pocket and Electron-Hole Tunneling in UTe 2 with Quantum Oscillations

Spin triplet superconductor UTe 2 is widely believed to host a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface, revealed by first-principles calculations, photoemission and quantum oscillation measurements. An outstanding question still remains as to the existence of a three-dimensional Fermi surface pocket, which is crucial for our understanding of the exotic superconducting and topological properties of UTe 2 . This 3D Fermi surface pocket appears in various theoretical models with different physics origins, but has not been unambiguously detected in experiment. Here, in this study, for the first time we provide concrete evidence for a relatively isotropic, small Fermi surface pocket of UTe 2 via quantum oscillation measurements. In addition, we observed high frequency quantum oscillations corresponding to electron-hole tunneling between adjacent electron and hole pockets. The coexistence of 2D and 3D Fermi surface pockets, as well as the breakdown orbits, provides a test bed for theoretical models and aid the realization of a unified understanding of superconducting state of UTe 2 from the first-principles approach.
