Spin-orbital order and excitons in magnetoresistive HoBi

The magnetism of the rocksalt fcc rare-earth monopnictide HoBi, a candidate topological material with extreme magnetoresistance, is investigated. From the Ho 3+ non-Kramers J=8 spin-orbital multiplet, the cubic crystal electric field yields six nearly degenerate low-energy levels. These constitute an anisotropic magnetic moment with a Jahn-Teller-like coupling to the lattice. In the cubic phase for T>T N =5.72(1)K, the paramagnetic neutron scattering is centered at k=($\frac{1}{2}$$\frac{1}{2}$$\frac{1}{2}$) and was fit to dominant antiferromagnetic interactions between Ho spins separated by {100} and ferromagnetic interactions between spins displaced by {$\frac{1}{2}$ $\frac{1}{2}$ 0}. For T < T N , a type-II AFM long-range order with k=($\frac{1}{2}$$\frac{1}{2}$$\frac{1}{2}$) develops along with a tetragonal lattice distortion. While neutron diffraction from a multidomain sample cannot unambiguously determine the spin orientation within a domain, the bulk magnetization, structural distortion, and our measurements of the magnetic excitations all show the easy axis coincides with the tetragonal axis. Finally, the weakly dispersive excitons for T < T N can be accounted for by a spin Hamiltonian that includes the crystal electric field and exchange interactions within the random phase approximation.

Evolution of magnetism, valence, and crystal lattice in EuCd 2 As 2 under pressure

EuCd 2 As 2 has been proposed to be one of the ideal platforms as an intrinsic topological magnetic system, potentially hosting a single pair of Weyl points when it is tuned into the ferromagnetic state with spins aligned out of plane by either external pressure or chemical doping. To investigate the possible realization of an ideal topological state, we have systematically investigated pressure control of the magnetic state, valence, and crystal structure using synchrotron-based time-domain Mössbauer spectroscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and powder x-ray diffraction. Our experimental results show that the magnetic configuration remains mostly in plane under pressure up to 42.8 GPa and pressure effectively enhances the magnetic ordering temperature. Meanwhile, Eu ions remain divalent when subjected to pressure up to 35.9 GPa, and the trigonal crystal lattice is maintained up to 34.6 GPa. Our work provides valuable experimental data to benchmark future theoretical studies in magnetic topological materials.

Topological enhancement of nonlinear transport in unconventional point-node semimetals

The topological singularity of the Bloch states close to the Fermi level significantly enhances nonlinear electric responses in topological semimetals. Here, we systematically characterize this enhancement for a large class of topological nodal-point fermions, including those with linear, linear-quadratic, and quadratic dispersions. Specifically, we determine the leading power-law dependence of the nonlinear response functions on the chemical potential μ defined relative to the nodal point. We identify two characteristics that qualitatively improve nonlinear transports compared to those of conventional Dirac and Weyl fermions. First, the type-II (overtilted) spectrum leads to the log μ enhancement of nonlinear response functions having zero scaling dimension with respect to μ, which is not seen in a type-I (moderately or not tilted) spectrum. Second, the anisotropic linear-quadratic dispersion increases the power of small-μ divergence for the nonlinear response tensors along the linearly dispersing direction. Furthermore, our work reveals new experimental signatures of unconventional nodal points in topological semimetals as well as provides a guiding principle for giant nonlinear electric responses.

g-factor engineering with InAsSb alloys toward zero band gap limit

Band gap is known as an effective parameter for tuning the Landé g factor in semiconductors and can be manipulated in a wide range through the bowing effect in ternary alloys. In this work, using the recently developed virtual substrate technique, high-quality InAsSb alloys throughout the whole Sb composition range are fabricated and a large g factor of g≈-90 at the minimum band gap of ~0.1 eV, which is almost twice that in bulk InSb, is found. Further analysis to the zero gap limit reveals a possible gigantic g factor of g≈-200 with a peculiar relativistic Zeeman effect that disperses as the square root of magnetic field. Such a g-factor enhancement toward the narrow gap limit cannot be quantitatively described by the conventional Roth formula, as the orbital interaction effect between the nearly triply degenerated bands becomes the dominant source for the Zeeman splitting. These results may provide insights into realizing large g factors and spin-polarized states in semiconductors and topological materials.

Disorder-induced topological phase transition in a driven Majorana chain

Here, we study a periodically driven one-dimensional Kitaev model in the presence of disorder. In the clean limit our model exhibits four topological phases corresponding to the existence or nonexistence of edge modes at zero and π quasienergy. When potential disorder is added, the system parameters get renormalized and the system may exhibit a topological phase transition. When starting from the Majorana π mode (MPM) phase, which hosts only edge Majoranas with quasienergy π, disorder induces a transition into a neighboring phase with both π and zero modes on the edges. We characterize the disordered system using (i) exact diagonalization, (ii) Arnoldi mapping onto an effective tight-binding chain, and (iii) topological entanglement entropy.

Universal model of Floquet operator Krylov space

It is shown that the stroboscopic time evolution under a Floquet unitary, in any spatial dimension, and of any Hermitian operator, can be mapped to an operator Krylov space, which is identical to that generated by the edge operator of the noninteracting Floquet transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) in one-spatial dimension, and with inhomogeneous Ising and transverse field couplings. The latter has four topological phases reflected by the absence (topologically trivial) or presence (topologically nontrivial) of edge modes at 0 and/or π quasienergies. It is shown that the Floquet dynamics share certain universal features characterized by how the Krylov parameters vary in the topological phase diagram of the Floquet TFIM with homogeneous couplings. Furthermore, these results are highlighted through examples, all chosen for numerical convenience to be in one spatial dimension: nonintegrable Floquet spin 1/2 chains and Floquet Z 3 clock model where the latter hosts period-tripled edge modes.

Lifetime of Almost Strong Edge-Mode Operators in One-Dimensional, Interacting, Symmetry Protected Topological Phases

Almost strong edge-mode operators arising at the boundaries of certain interacting one-dimensional symmetry protected topological phases with Z 2 symmetry have infinite temperature lifetimes that are nonperturbatively long in the integrability breaking terms, making them promising as bits for quantum information processing. We extract the lifetime of these edge-mode operators for small system sizes as well as in the thermodynamic limit. For the latter, a Lanczos scheme is employed to map the operator dynamics to a one-dimensional tight-binding model of a single particle in Krylov space. We suggest this model to be that of a spatially inhomogeneous Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with a hopping amplitude that increases away from the boundary, and a dimerization that decreases away from the boundary. We associate this dimerized or staggered structure with the existence of the almost strong mode. Thus, the short time dynamics of the almost strong mode is that of the edge mode of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, while the long time dynamics involves decay due to tunneling out of that mode, followed by chaotic operator spreading. Furthermore, we show that competing scattering processes can lead to interference effects that can significantly enhance the lifetime.

Obstruction and Interference in Low-Energy Models for Twisted Bilayer Graphene

The electronic bands of twisted bilayer graphene (TBLG) with a large-period moiré superlattice fracture to form narrow Bloch minibands that are spectrally isolated by forbidden energy gaps from remote dispersive bands. When these gaps are sufficiently large, one can study a band-projected Hamiltonian that correctly represents the dynamics within the minibands. This inevitably introduces nontrivial geometrical constraints that arise from the assumed form of the projection. Here we show that this choice has a profound consequence in a low-energy experimentally observable signature that therefore can be used to tightly constrain the analytic form of the appropriate low-energy theory. Additionally, we find that this can be accomplished by a careful analysis of the electron density produced by backscattering of Bloch waves from an impurity potential localized on the moiré superlattice scale. We provide numerical estimates of the effect that can guide experimental work to clearly discriminate between competing models for the low-energy band structure.

Topological Charge Pumping in Excitonic Insulators

Here, we show that in excitonic insulators with s-wave electron-hole pairing, an applied electric field (either pulsed or static) can induce a p-wave component to the order parameter, and further drive it to rotate in the s + ip plane, realizing a Thouless charge pump. In one dimension, each cycle of rotation pumps exactly two electrons across the sample. Higher dimensional systems can be viewed as a stack of one-dimensional chains in momentum space in which each chain crossing the Fermi surface contributes a channel of charge pumping. Physics beyond the adiabatic limit, including in particular dissipative effects is discussed.

Direct Measurement of Helicoid Surface States in RhSi Using Nonlinear Optics

Despite the fundamental nature of the edge state in topological physics, direct measurement of electronic and optical properties of the Fermi arcs of topological semimetals has posed a significant experimental challenge, as their response is often overwhelmed by the metallic bulk. However, laser-driven currents carried by surface and bulk states can propagate in different directions in nonsymmorphic crystals, allowing for the two components to be easily separated. Motivated by a recent theoretical prediction G. Chang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 166404 (2020), we have measured the linear and circular photogalvanic effect currents deriving from the Fermi arcs of the nonsymmorphic, chiral Weyl semimetal RhSi over the 0.45-1.1 eV incident photon energy range. Our data are in good agreement with the predicted spectral shape of the circular photogalvanic effect as a function of photon energy, although the direction of the surface photocurrent departed from the theoretical expectation over the energy range studied. In conclusion, surface currents arising from the linear photogalvanic effect were observed as well, with the unexpected result that only two of the six allowed tensor element were required to describe the measurements, suggesting an approximate emergent mirror symmetry inconsistent with the space group of the crystal.

Composite Fermi Liquid at Zero Magnetic Field in Twisted MoTe 2

Here, the pursuit of exotic phases of matter outside of the extreme conditions of a quantizing magnetic field is a long-standing quest of solid state physics. Recent experiments have observed spontaneous valley polarization and fractional Chern insulators in zero magnetic field in twisted bilayers of MoTe 2 , at partial filling of the topological valence band (ν =-2/3 and -3/5). We study the topological valence band at half filling, using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group calculations. We discover a composite Fermi liquid (CFL) phase even at zero magnetic field that covers a large portion of the phase diagram near twist angle ~3.6°. The CFL is a non-Fermi liquid phase with metallic behavior despite the absence of Landau quasiparticles. We discuss experimental implications including the competition between the CFL and a Fermi liquid, which can be tuned with a displacement field. The topological valence band has excellent quantum geometry over a wide range of twist angles and a small bandwidth that is, remarkably, reduced by interactions. These key properties stabilize the exotic zero field quantum Hall phases. Finally, we present an optical signature involving “extinguished” optical responses that detects Chern bands with ideal quantum geometry.

Extracting the Quantum Hall Conductance from a Single Bulk Wave Function

In this work, we propose a new formula that extracts the quantum Hall conductance from a single (2+1)⁢ D gapped wave function. The formula applies to general many-body systems that conserve particle number, and is based on the concept of modular flow, i.e., unitary dynamics generated from the entanglement structure of the wave function. The formula is shown to satisfy all formal properties of the Hall conductance: it is odd under time reversal and reflection, even under charge conjugation, universal and topologically rigid in the thermodynamic limit. Further evidence for relating the formula to the Hall conductance is obtained from conformal field theory arguments. Finally, we numerically check the formula by applying it to a noninteracting Chern band where excellent agreement is obtained.

Quantum Anomalous Hall Crystal at Fractional Filling of Moiré Superlattices

We predict the emergence of a state of matter with intertwined ferromagnetism, charge order, and topology in fractionally filled moiré superlattice bands. Remarkably, these quantum anomalous Hall crystals exhibit a quantized integer Hall conductance that is different than expected from the filling and Chern number of the band. Microscopic calculations show that this phase is robustly favored at half-filling (𝜈 =1/2) at larger twist angles of the twisted semiconductor bilayer 𝑡⁢MoTe 2 .

Quasiparticle Interference in Kitaev Quantum Spin Liquids

We study quasiparticle interference (QPI) in the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) for electrons tunneling into the QSL. The local tunneling conductance around a spin vacancy or localized vison reveals unique features associated with fractionalized Majorana fermions, chargons, and visons. In certain parameter regimes, the single-spinon density of states and momentum dispersion can both be directly extracted from the tunneling conductance. In conclusion, our results suggest that QPI is a promising tool for identifying the Kitaev QSL and its fractionalized excitations.

Photon energy and polarization-dependent electronic structure of Cr-doped Bi 2 Se 3

In this article, we report a comparative study of the electronic structure of Cr-doped and pristine Bi 2 Se 3 . Circular dichroism and photon-energy-dependent angle-resolved photoemission experiments were performed. Even though the surface states seen on the Cr-doped samples are gapped, they exhibit strong circular dichroism, for which we provide its origin in accordance with the nontrivial band structure of the bulk. We note the surface electronic structure measurements with linear and circular polarized light show signatures that the orbital composition of the surface states is changed with Cr doping. Our observations not only provide further spectroscopic information about topological materials, but also promotes an alternative experimental tool to control their spin-orbital texture.

Large anomalous Nernst and inverse spin-Hall effects in epitaxial thin films of kagome semimetal Mn 3 Ge

Synthesis of crystallographically well-defined thin films of topological materials is important for unraveling their mesoscale quantum properties and for device applications. Mn 3 Ge , an antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal with a chiral magnetic structure on a kagome lattice, is expected to have enhanced Berry curvature around Weyl nodes near the Fermi energy, leading to large anomalous Hall/Nernst effects and a large spin-Hall effect. Using magnetron sputtering, we have grown epitaxial thin films of hexagonal D 0 19 Mn 3 Ge that are flat and continuous. Large anomalous Nernst and inverse spin-Hall effects are observed in thermoelectric and spin-pumping devices. The anomalous Nernst signal in our Mn 3 Ge films is estimated to be 0.1 μV/K and is comparable to that in ferromagnetic Fe, despite Mn 3 Ge having a weak magnetization of ~ 3.5 m μ B / Mn at room temperature. In this work, the spin-mixing conductance is 90.5 nm – 2 at the Py / Mn 3 Ge interface, and the spin-Hall angle in Mn 3 Ge is estimated to be about eight times of that in Pt.

Thermomagnetic properties of Bi 2 Te 3 single crystal in the temperature range from 55 K to 380 K

Magnetothermoelectric transport provides an understanding of coupled electron-hole-phonon current in topological materials and has applications in energy conversion and cooling. In this paper, we study the Nernst coefficient, the magneto-Seebeck coefficient, and the magnetoresistance of single-crystalline Bi 2 Te 3 under external magnetic field in the range of –3T to 3T and in the temperature range of 55 K to 380 K. Moreau's relation is employed to justify both the overall trend of the Nernst coefficient and the temperature at which this coefficient changes sign. We observe a nonlinear relationship between the Nernst coefficient and the applied magnetic field in the temperature range of 55 K to 255 K. An increase in both the Nernst coefficient and the magneto-Seebeck coefficient is observed as the temperature is reduced which can be attributed to the increased mobility of the carriers at lower temperatures. First-principles density functional theory calculations were carried out to physically model the experimental data including electronic and transport properties. Simulation findings agreed with the experiments and provide a theoretical insight to justify the measurements.

Topological and nodal superconductor kagome magnesium triboride

Recently the kagome compounds have inspired enormous interest and made some great progress such as in the field of superconductivity and topology. Here we predict a different kagome magnesium triboride (Mg⁢B 3 ) superconductor with a calculated T c ~ 12.2K and T c ~ 15.4 K by external stress, the potentially highest among the reported diverse kagome-type superconductors. We reveal its various exotic physical properties including the van Hove singularity, flat-band, multiple Dirac points, and nontrivial topology. The system can be described by a two-band model with highly anisotropic superconducting gaps on Fermi surfaces. Its topological and nodal superconducting nature is unveiled by a recently developed symmetry indicators method. In conclusion, our results suggest that Mg⁢B 3 can be a new platform to study exotic physics in the kagome structure, and pave a way to seek for more superconductors and topological materials with XY 3 -type kagome lattice.
